Drew says he thinks the “most important point” is that the companions don’t earn miles on companion tickets. That isn’t the case for the first two programs mentioned. Alaska and US Airways both award miles for the primary traveler and companion. He also uses a trip to Alaska as one way to maximize value of US Airways companion tickets and says they are valid for economy or business class trips. The verbiage on the certificate says that it’s for round trip coach trips in the US48 and Canada… I suppose it is possible that trips to Alaska and in first class are possible, but I highly doubt it. (I actually just received my most recent cert so maybe I will try and ticket an F ticket to ANC.)

One other thing not explained about the Alaska companion fare is that while Alaska’s network isn’t huge, the companion fare does allow trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Mexico. Also, while only one “roundtrip” is allowed, you can do multiple open-jaws and stopovers to create something like: DTW-HNL, HNL-DEN, OMA-SEA, GEG-DTW: http://imgur.com/fsKGVBJ

(That may not be the most practical itinerary for most people, but you get the picture as to the level of flexibility that can be achieved.)
