@Nick: Yeah, got stuck on that trip report landing in Tehran. 17 days hauling less than $150 in this blog just does not get me to…sit down and spend hours posting it. Yeah, felt so good to be traveling again!

@ Sam: That joke about Delta variant and AF had me rolling on the floor laughing, thanks! Things are moving along fast so I would guess that Europe trip is at 70%+. But then again, this virus can change things…hope we are not being so arrogant that it flatten us again come Fall! Great point on how far cc offers go these days….and all the pumping bloggers still sell them enthusiastically!

@ Kat: Welcome here. Oh yeah, miss the Fairmont card! I think you may have had the same suite in the Fairmont SF like me! I need to look at the one in Philippines, did not even know there was one there, thanks. I have 2 Hilton nights and also looking for a way to get the best bang out of them.

@Carl: Would love to find out one day what happened in that legal “incident” some years ago! Back now, FL was a great first post Covid trip involving airplanes and it was perfect to get some of that rustiness off. And now…need to catch up….missed that feeling too!

2. I booked a trip to Europe in the fall, though I put the odds on actually going at less than 50%. Current rules for many airlines allow 100% refunds, so why not? It’s fun to think we might really go, even if we’re shadow boxing.

Some have asked us if we’re concerned the delta variant. I tell them ‘not at all-we’re booked on Air France’.

3. All the bloggers are calling credit card sign-up bonuses the best ever. I measure these differently-how far can I go using the bonus miles?

For example, when Citi used to offer 75k bonuses, AA was charging 50k to go to Europe in business class, plus we got that free first class one way to Hawaii due to AA’s long gone stopover rules. Now with dynamic pricing, a 100k bonus may not cover a 110,000 mile award (and you can swim to Hawaii, pal). So the award won’t quite get you to Europe buy only, let’s say, to 400 miles this side of the England post.

I’m burning some free hotel nights next month in Asheville and if things come together I’ll be burning a bunch more in Tennessee in August. It’s good to be getting back to normal.
