While it's always comforting to believe that justice was served, the reality is that Ceausescu and his wife were convicted and speedily executed by his former henchmen, probably to prevent him from talking too much. Not that he didn't deserve that, of course. The reason why he was wooed by western leaders was Romania's stand in Europe. While still a socialist country, Romania was not a member of the pro-Soviet Warsaw Pact. That came handy during the Cold War.
