Good to know...I have time to plan, thanks.

This made me laugh, thanks:

"My wife literally cried when we boarded our first flight home from Kauai. Can’t blame her-we were flying United."

Best of Web type post tomorrow, been a while!

Kauai anytime is great.

That said, January can be rainy, in which case you’ll want to stay on the west side of the island most of the time as it has more sun.
Plenty of great hiking, and there’s easily enough going on to fill a week. Is Breneke’s still going? Poipu Beach-saw a huge turtle who came ashore to sun for the afternoon there. Lifeguard roped it off so the tourists wouldn’t interrupt his sleep. Tide came in, woke him up and off he swam.

If the weather gives you a break, head up to Hanalei and beyond that to the end of the road and the trailhead of the Kalalau hiking trail. 11 miles of up and down-a mile an hour over 2 days is about average. We did it twice back in our early 40s but that was then.

My wife literally cried when we boarded our first flight home from Kauai. Can’t blame her-we were flying United.

Ok, that’s not fair. UA was pretty good back then. The lasagna was much better.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Been a very long day in my end...so I am late responding.

@ Nick: I think you liked it :)

@ David: I need to start looking at airfare. Still...not sure going to Kauai in January is a good idea, maybe you are smarter going the other way! Developing. Wife got #2 today too. We all had 2nd shots!

@ DML: Great catch on the chinese vaccine in Chile, I updated the post to point this out, thank you. I did not get to the WSJ today before posting...I usually do and I would have caught it.

@ ABC: Yep, it sure looks like it. No idea about Novavax...will need to look at this, not sure why/how this one just kind of fell off the map, at least here in the US.

@ Carl: I have had that worst map in the queue for a while and needed a third link...so it was either post it today or it was time to trash it. Barely made it on TBB :)

For the record, TBB does not support the new European Soccer League...this is why I never got into much club play...I prefer national teams where they play for the nation jersey instead of who pays the most money

Much good stuff! I liked the short stories a lot! And though I normally do not care for the list thing-ees, the 50 Hotel Hacks was fun.

Gotta say though, the map..., Route 66 doesn't even GO through Nevada, so whoever made that was a tad sloppy. I know it wasn't you and the rest of it is great anyhow!

Completely agree the Gum Wall is a lousy (and icky) attraction as far as I am concerned.

Israel vs Chile =>mRNA (Pfizer vaccine) versus China vaccine. One is amazing the other one doesn’t provide much protection after the first injections and could be a lot more effective.
The US could easily “win” vaccine diplomacy by distributing the 3 approved vaccines starting with North America in a month. BTW why isn’t Novavax’s available?

Good morning!

Thanks for all the interesting links. I certainly have been to many of the "worst" tourist sites on the list. I don't know how I missed the "ball of twine." I'll catch it next time I'm nearby.

The Guardian story of the experience in Chile seemed to have missed that the vaccine used is the one out of China with something like 16% effectiveness after one dose.

The WSJ story is behind the paywall but the headline gives the bottom line.

Good morning Buzz, thanks for the great post. The photos are amazing. I'm looking forward to a brief report on the Kauai Hyatt, looks very tempting.
My wife and I got the J&J two weeks ago, and so far no new springs loose...emphasis on "new"

"A lot of history is just gawking at how wrong, how blind, people can be. Disastrously wrong, embarrassingly blind. Millions of people, all at the same time."

A lot of people don't get this. There's a good chance you're blind about something right now. Which, incidentally, is a point raised about a Netflix documentary I like to recommend: "Behind the Curve", about flat-earthers.
