Been to PV a few times, it’s a safe tourist city. Their economy relies on tourists. A lot of the doors have been closed because of bad press and bad economy. Tourists don’t want to come if there is bad press (for the most part) and it doesn’t help the local economy either. I’ve never had any issues, in fact it’s a lot safer than many parts of my own city in the US! As with anything, use common sense.

On a side note, taxi’s recommend restaurants and get commission for it (tourist trap). Langosta (Happy Lobster) is typically recommended by taxi drivers all the time. Just a word of caution.

Just wanted to mention something I read online. Supposedly hundreds of businesses have closed there due to extortion attempts from cartel members. The people can’t afford to pay the “protection” money and just close their doors.

Also had read that tourists are encouraged to not leave the tourist areas.

1. Did you see any evidence of closed businesses?
2. How about the restaurant on the hillside? Was that considered to be a tourist place?
