The Miles Professor, after uncovering better Chase credit card offers at the branch, continued her bank branch visiting and discovered that there are better offers inside Citibank branches! Hmm, interesting….I am starting to wonder if the banks are experimenting with different offers at the branches to get us to visit so they can cross sell us AND stop feeding the affiliate companies (not cheap!). Probably not…just wondering.

Mark 5/21 as the day MMS turned into another garbage CC whore
First he decided to put banner ads in his post with no disclosure (misleading disclosure, actually)
And now today, he’s officially doing TPG whoring tactics. Let’s count the ways he tries to emulate TPG:
1) Link to the credit card in the disclosure sentence before the post even starts (like TPG putting links in the question portion of his sunday reader questions)
2) Another link to the card within the first sentence of the post
3) No fewer than 4 links to the card in the post, including the banner ads (another TPG staple).
3) Putting in links to take you to his SPG Amex, CSP and “Hot Deals” tab, even though the post has nothing to do with those cards
4) “If you find this 8 to 10 part series helpful, please”….. ummm WTF?!?!?!?!
5) Passing off mostly canned, copied and spoonfed material as if you are some discoverer of these. All but a handful of his 18 bullets are just basic rules of the award chart, and the remaining 2-3 have been elaborated on extensively by MileValue, FlyerTalk. Of course he takes things that can be said in 2 sentences and makes it 2 paragraphs. No H/T’s anywhere in the post
If TPG wrote a post like this, you’d be tearing him a new one. Since it’s MMS, maybe you’ll “like his writing style”?
The logical next step in this transformation (as we’ve seen countless times before) is he’ll start censoring comments

I also wrote a 10 part series on American Airlines miles and there were no affiliate links in that.
Or, rather, I never put an affiliate link in the post because the 50K offer was much better than my affiliate link.
There was also a time when FTG was a great blogger.

Yes, Yes, rockattack or whatever you call yourself. I know that you don’t like me or the blog, but your dislike provides me more motivation to post, so don’t let it stop! I’m already thinking of what I can circle and arrow next!
1) There is nothing new with the disclosure in this post. It usually included an affiliate link it.
2 & 3) I’ve never understood why I shouldn’t link to a card which pays me a commission just because *you* don’t like it. It is the best available offer.
I make the point that you should NOT apply for the Lufthansa card if you’re new to miles and points and suggest alternative cards if you’re new to miles and points.
4) Yes, this will be a long series because there are quirks to the Lufthansa stop-over, routing, fees etc. I haven’t read about them elsewhere so thought it would make a good series. Of course, you already new that you don’t get your money or miles back if you cancel a Lufthansa reduced flight award?
You keep whining about original content, no? 🙂
5) As I pointed out to you in the comments, no one has written about low/no fees on Air New Zealand, low fees on Air China/Singapore airlines etc.
My post has screenshots of actual bookings with the actual price paid – information which I also haven’t seen elsewhere.
But don’t let the facts get in the way. 🙂

If we do, we expect you to say so up front and whether you get a commission or not. You used to do that but lately you have not. That’s ALL! We love original content sure but, come on, do we really need to work this to death? 8 8 part series is beyond ridiculous. Then again you have done this with your trip reports so we should not be surprised.

or something like that….This “I get a small income if you apply for a credit card from one of my links and I sure appreciate it” ridiculous disclosures some other bloggers have are, well, ridiculous.
AA award series vs LH award series are completely different animals imho. Would you be doing an 8 part LH award series if there was NO affiliate LH credit card link? I doubt it…And this is the effect of the affiliates…skewing content all the time:-)

—> Like you, I do delete sexually graphic comments directed at others. And I will add to the spam list (not delete) comments which have the characteristics of spam. Like a consistent pattern of using different usernames, threatening and insulting others, and being disruptive.

@TBB and MMS, Something that I have asked both of you before (er, I think) is a way to make sure that no one posts anonymously (or under multiple names). It’s obvious from MMS’s posts that his blogging platform can tie a name to an IP address (that’s how he knows when I post as “bluecat” versus “redcat”, or whatever).
Don’t the platforms have a way to enforce “one handle per IP address”? This does not shut down people with multiple devices, of course, and does not stop people from bashing BUT IT HAS A GOOD SIDE EFFECT. If you implement this, then your readers know who they are having a conversation with. If everyone posts as “anonymous”, it can become confusing…
I can force everyone to register and then verify their email address in order for them to comment, but that will penalize most folks.
I prefer to have a more open commenting system where anyone can comment. But it also lets in the disruptive comments, but they are amusing and cheaper than George’s therapist! 🙂
On the other hand, the current system works fine for me (I welcome feedback), and it is literally 4 or 5 commenters with the drama, obscenities, and disruptions.
But that’s what the spam list is for!

I don’t understand what you mean by “penalize”. There is no penalty whatsoever, except for one additional step of responding to an email.
But on reflection, I don’t think your readers really have much a discussion amongst themselves. Mostly, it is with you. So there is no strong need to know who you are conversing with (unlike on flyertalk, for example).
Stop the MMS bashing! I have been critical of his interviews in the past, but I like Dariaus and his wife. I like his site. He works hard and is honest. yes, he has made a couple of mistakes, but he is a good person trying to make a living. D, Thank you for all you do!!. You have help me personally many times in the last year. I appreciate you and your site. Eh. I have nothing personal against any blogger except one that I treated me like a complete asshole in person, twice. And it wasn’t Daraius, so he’s safe. 🙂 Like TBB, it’s the sometimes shady way affiliate links are presented around the blogging world, and especially the inundation of links with no redeeming content to match in many posts that get on my nerves.
In MMS’ case, the LH series will prove useful. I didn’t learn anything so far, but then I’m the guy who reads anything and everything. I’ve been all over LH rules before, so we’ll see if Daraius can provide any nuggets I missed.
What I wonder is how sustainable affiliate marketing in this way will be. We know bloggers have to keep the numbers up and ideally increase that. At some point without enough new products there just can’t be that many new or repeat customers. The whole thing seems like a bubble that will some day (still quite a way off) burst.
I grabbed the LH card. Why? Because I’m kind of running out of options, and Barclays specifically pulls TransUnion for me. Every other mileage/point affinity card from other banks pulls Experian (Well, CapOne pulls at 3 of course) so there was no real risk to my next 4-5 card churn this summer. Plus I’m hoping to discover I can churn the LH card. I cannot churn US Airways cards from Barclays because I’ve had over a dozen personal and business ones. They won’t give me any more!
So who, pray tell, is “not safe”? 😉
I think George has done a valuable service in highlighting transparency in regards to referral links. Shame on MileValue for not including the US Airways anniversary-bonus card today, for example. But those guys are a lost cause.
I think we need to make a distinction between “blog posts that provide information” and “blog posts that are advertisements.”
The former category (call it Category 1) includes notifying readers about new tricks and new deals. Today’s post above about the fuel tank arrow on cars is a good example. The Miles Professor’s post is a good example. FMiler’s “One card to rule them all” is the archetype. The MilesMomma post someone noted a few days ago ($395 for seven nights at mediocre properties at TripAlertz) would be an example of this, except that the deal stunk and she didn’t disclose her affiliate link.
Within this category are the new, cutting-edge tricks (Category 1a), and the ho-hum information that everyone knows (Category 1b). No one should get credit, for example, for posting the information that American has elite “soft landings.” American Airlines itself emailed that out. Category 1b also includes just reprinting corporate press releases:
posts about new Marriott breakfast benefits for elites and breakfast at Hyatt House are providing information but also giving free face time for brands.
Somewhere in between 1a and 1b are trip reports.
Then there are posts that seem to convey information, but are largely advertisements (Category 2). To a certain extent, all “points and miles” blogs do this: you’re selling an “insider” lifestyle to the time-constrained masses too busy to wade through the forums. But come now. Gary’s post today about the Ink Bold v. Ink Plus falls in this category. The insipid “People ask me which cards to get” post is in this category. The FTG “churn challenges” are ads to get you to click for credit cards.
A blog that has a healthy dose of Category 1a, with less Category 1b and less Category 2 will get my eyeballs and referral links.
Sure, this niche/hobby is full of people we might term “not-medically-recommended feminine hygiene products,” as seen in the little Pointshound brouhaha. The Sheraton FTU points-grabbing and getting excited over the Emirates shower make me roll my eyes. But I forgive people to the extent that they contribute information rather than advertisements.
So coming back to today’s obvious “satisfy Barclaycard masters” posts, I see where Daraius is coming from in providing information beyond “look at the Miles & More chart, duh.” I don’t really see why information on fuel surcharges and routing has to be eight posts long, except to add advertisements for Barclaycard.

Very scientific but let’s cut to the chase: EVERYONE is pushing credit cards as their primary content with very few exceptions. FM is the (good) outlier, and an example of your category 1A. milevalue is also 1A-“ish”, although he is getting more infomercial-like every week. I used to love MMS…now down to “like”.
The rest are getting absolutely nauseating with all of the pushing.

@bluecat -> Sure anonymous is not the ideal way to deal with this but you should not try to impart censorship/monitoring ideas here. You can go to flyertalk or other places which do that kind of stuff.
Anytime people take short cuts to make money in life, they will get called out and not respected by society. That is plain and simple problem with MMS and several other bloggers. Innovation and hard work even without success will trump whatever several bloggers are doing especially those that opened up in the last 2-3 years. You do realize 90% of us longtime FTers thought it would be a douchy move to take advantage of free information from the forums and try to sell it correct? And we are not repenting or regretting. It is not jealousy, it is contempt and disdain. Trying to paint everyone with a broad brush like angries or jealous is a failed attempt at circumventing the crux of the problem.
Yah I know no one is going to stop them. But don’t try to call others who are genuinely frustrated with the scene as angries or jealous. Remember this line from The Social Network

Does make you wonder who did the research/writing.
I think with blog proliferation, a lot of the bloggers are just not generating enough revenue. That, and there is basically not enough market penetration as the frequent flyer world is generally not THAT big outside of Flyertalk. They know all the bloggers now and there is enough information out there about which ones are good (maybe 2 or 3 at the most) and which ones are regurgitating CC advertisements masked as blog posts. I would say “angries” are actually the majority group, most don’t waste their time participating in comments etc though. And FT mods have a tight leash on commenting against blogs for some reason.
With not getting enough repeat customers due to increasing awareness about this whole model, and the pressure from the affiliates, we are seeing good bloggers pimping more and more CCc in an act of desperation to hopefully penetrate the newbie market. That is a continuous cycle which explains why everyone is doing it more and more.
Hopefully the madness stops and we go back to actual content. Market is not sustainable and no one has any form of competitive advantage at the moment.

I used to like MMS. Not because he was an interesting writer – he’s a pretty awful writer and writes mindbogglingly needless filler posts (oh, that’s what a gift card rack at Lowe’s looks like? I was wondering)
I liked him because in the world of bloggers, he seemed like an outlier – a genuinely nice guy who just loved blogging about travel and wanted to help people. Even when he posted affiliate links, I never got the feeling that it was all about the $$$ and everything else (like content, credibility etc.) were background noise
I don’t get that feeling anymore.
I expect TPG to link to lots of credit cards that have nothing to do with a post
I expect MileValue to do it
I expect Lucky and MommyPoints to do it (these 2 are fairly recent developments)

Having just gone and read the MMS post, I like it. OK, a few links at the top, but the rest of it is link free and clearly took some time to put together.
And yes, whilst it is a way to persuade you to get the card, that is OK in this case. He is saying ‘get this card and here are some cool things you can do’. I can live with that.
Of course you can rationalize that. Just another wannabe …..
There are 10s of thousands of frequent flyers who despise these growing shilling. Labeling them angries and continuing to be a credit card pimp is just another milestone ..you will be there someday too, all the while not realizing that people are not jealous or angry. They are just fed up with assholes.

I think forcing readers to do something extra automatically makes some NOT bother. And some are really picky about privacy issues. So it is better to just let it all go. There is beauty in free form commenting. It can get ugly sometimes but the benefits of doing it this way vastly out number the negatives!

I hear you about the sustainability of the whole affiliate marketing thing. I don’t know. The US market is really strange; none of this crap goes on in other countries. I hear you about the mine FT —> Blogs angle. I get it. But there is a value in doing that as most people are lazy and prefer blog posts clearly all laid out! That is a fact. I do not believe that sites like FT and MP are the future. Blogs are the future. I believe Randy had posted a table clearly showing the phenomenal growth in blogs (Boarding Area, etc.) At least, give MMS some credit for actually doing some research AND packaging it well (maybe too well lol). Some other bloggers just take stuff and copy it in a very lazy carpet bagging way…don’t get me started:-)

The BIG bucks are in the newbie market since the market is so VAST.
I think you may be right about the gamers market may be getting saturated. Way too many blogs now getting into it (not yours truly so far!). The whole field has a “bubble” feel to it. I just wish some bloggers who went at it full time don’t blow the money and then find themselves in the job market needing to get back into what they were doing before and having lost so many former skills.

The economics FOR affiliate links are, in a simple word, devastating! It says A LOT about people who have resisted them!
But…damnit, they are still devastating. And only a few have managed to add them AND maintain integrity and content quality. I would like to be one of them but at my pace I may qualify for an AARP membership before that happens lol.

Disclosures are just a feel good propaganda tool. The real problem is the excessive advertisement. But at least some are adhering to some decent practices when it comes to ads.
Certainly an entertaining late evening read.
What was interesting about MMS post was all the ‘new’ information it contained on LH. I’ve found over the years that you have to read new information a couple of times before it sinks in. I have no intention of getting the LH Barclay card, but if I did, and had travel planned, I’d have found the MMS posting very interesting.
TPG did his BA Avios thread. Darius has his Southwest Companion Pass thread. Both really helped me out, as I was a new to each of those programs. So if you can see through the CC links, the LH posting is brilliant.

Would such a post ever be made if there was no LH 50k offer? I think this is the key question!
But who would WANT to read a big series on using Miles & More miles if there wasn’t a credit card to get you those miles? That’s why I think this is possibly the wrong target.

I think the number of angries are dwarfed by the number of non angries who actually click on them links! And the non angries market is vast. The non angries who stick with it for a while (most do not) and then start to “get it”…they become angries and join us:-)
