And now we are entering the Blog Buzz territory…
Affiliate marketing is everywhere…. – Miles Abound Yes we thought you had retired the blog! The long intro about the comparison sites was, well, a little boring. Maybe I should not have said “will never change the way they blog”, perhaps not the best choice of words. I say lots of things on my blog and sometimes they are probably not the smartest things and I apologize if I do so. What I meant to say is that my intention is to keep doing what I am doing and stick the credit card in a separate tab and have loyal readers show their appreciation for my work. My blog is NOT a hobby blog! It is a blog about my hobby that I spend way too much time on it to be a hobby anymore. It ceased being a hobby after about 3 months into it when it became, well, an obsession actually! Dear amigo, you should know what it takes to blog daily. I have made a commitment in this thing, it has become part of my life, part of who I am. My priority is to stick to the mission of the blog and make the world a better place. If money comes along with it, great! I am not financially independent, I do have a mortgage and big tuition bills staring me at the face, some dinero could help but certainly not a necessity for happiness. But I just can’t do what you told me twice “to do it properly”, meaning rebrand and pump it to the newbies, just not my cup of tea. I am doing an experiment to see if in this online world there is room for responsible bloggers who have been around this quirky hobby for a very long time who CAN succeed. You called Frequent Miler an outlier. I think you are right. Can our space make room for more outliers and less pumpers? God knows we don’t need more pumpers “pumping doing it properly”. Or maybe I am insane. I like to set insane impossible goals, they keep me focused and out of things that could spell trouble lol. I have never hidden my lame attempts to monetize. I am still trying to find a way, it’s all about the journey for me and not the quick buck. As far as the advisory business not paying as much as before, I am sure you heard about the robo advisors and the coming fee compression. I like to stay ahead of the competition 🙂 I have never put the money FIRST. If I did I would have taken Rick’s advice to rebrand as the Wall Street guy who knows travel rewards credit cards and “do it properly”. I like my tiny practice, love my clients and don’t make nearly as much as those other “Experts”. I have never made a cold call in my life and I am proud of that. I have turned away more business than many colleagues I know combined (not an exaggeration!). I just like to do things my own way. Please judge me by my content. Or this could be a basis for a good book on “Blogging: How To Succeed the Quick Way or the Long Way. Or Fail” or some other stupid title like that. Dang…I can’t believe I just wrote all that. We can talk about this over a few beers in Phoenix, Ramsey is buying so I am in!
Delta Points is on part 2 of 5 on the grand mileage run to…, please sit down, Miami! I can’t wait for part 3…just kidding!
Do you know how to sell something? Learn from Mr. Money Mustache how to sell Betterment accounts, I hear they pay very well their affiliates! This is the blog that had those awful travel rewards credit card pump links folks! Of course mine is just the crappy static ones and people still give me grief. But I am not going to call you angry as I am an angry myself LOL. Actually I can’t stand the “angry” term as I am never really angry…just amused! Anyways, THIS is how you sell online folks and this is why I suck at it 🙂

“I have never made a cold call in my life and I am proud of that.”
Why is that something to be proud of? I see a few interesting traits in those who go the Fee Only route. One of them is the failure to differentiate selling from commission related conflicts of interest. They seem to think of it as lower, or dirty, or are just scared to pick up the phone so instead hide behind the name of Fee Only. Planners need to realize that it is OK to cold call and sell, doing so doesn’t make them an evil insurance salesman.
What’s more, you say you aren’t selling, but you are – simply that you are taking the indirect route. By actively putting yourself out there daily with social media, a website, and guest posts to back link you are selling hard every day – just because you aren’t picking up the phone doesn’t mean that isn’t the case.
As for the Moustache man, I thought you were OK with affiliate links? That post was lengthy (I didn’t read it, just rolled through it) and had a clear link in the form of a banner at the end. Why are you singling that out as a pumping post? This comment has nothing to do with the bigger picture, and yes I do think he is making good money from his readers, and he the ‘retired early’ thing really means he is making his living from the site, and working hard still.
But as the internet police, I thought that would fit into your approved list?
As for your own CC links. Honestly. I think you know you are compromising yourself by having inferior links available for a commission on your site. Maybe it would be better to cold call some clients? 🙂

I am proud of it because I just can’t stand the direct selling route. Maybe it is because I have seen many “advisors” in my life skinning trusting consumers alive by being nice and doing the hard sell. The financial advisory industry is still full of them. No wonder we can’t be trusted in the marketplace when you hear of so many stories of scammers taking advantage of people. When I hear of cold calling the movie Boiler Room comes to mind, I can’t help it. Cold calling in my industry is a huge warning sign of scammers! Edward Jones sends its advisors to knock on doors. I am sure they also think it is okay, I find it highly disturbing. We will never be thought of as a profession if we deploy these direct selling tactics.
About my Merrill Lynch story now. Years ago when I was looking to escape the drudgery of yet another tax season I learned that ML was looking to hire people with CPA credentials and how they were all into financial planning. I thought great, I will talk to them. The guy stands me up for over half an hour, does not apologize and the first question he asked me was “How do you feel about cold calling?”. I walked out never to return…EVER 🙂
To recap: Yes we Fee Only financial planners abhor this direct selling because we associate it with awful experiences we have seen in our practices.
>>>>>>you say you aren’t selling, but you are – simply that you are taking the indirect route.
Yes, correct. I have no problem with that.
Re Moustache: I think Betterment is crap. That was a whole bunch of malarkey intended to SELL this baby hard. Or I am still pissed when he tried pumping the credit cards by hiring an “expert” pumping only cards that paid the site. Never understood that guy but I do admire what he has done with his site from a commercial point of view, wow! I think Personal Capital is better. This whole robo advisor scene is fascinating!
Regarding “my own CC links”. Look, read my disclosures on the Credit Card page. I am tired of stating that I have no control of the links because this is all they gave me, I have links to Mile Nerd’s best offers, this is for my loyal readers who have been asking me for over a year to add a credit card tab and newbies can always email me.
I will not cold call, EVER! I am bumping up my minimum annual fee & lowering my AUM fees across the board in 2015. I am aiming to lower my new client average from 1.4 to 1 per year. To have more time for TBB #insanity If Gary Leff can do it, why can’t I? LOL
See you and Phil this weekend, Ramsey is buying!
Matt says
I’m not trying to come off like a meanie, must just be my bedside manner.
However, you are still missing the point. Selling your service does not equate to scamming people. They are distinct things.
Look at it another way:
Is it wrong for a guy (or girl) to approach a girl at the office holiday party and say ‘hey what’s up?’ that is a cold call. It doesn’t mean that the guy is going to scam the girl, it is an opening line. Certainly some guys will be out there to take advantage and hope for a quick one night stand, or something even ‘worse’ – however many people have met and married from such an approach.
You are saying it is wrong to approach and say hi, but it is OK to stand around looking cool hoping the girl comes to you.
To think that standing around looking cool makes you a better husband down the road is fallacious.
As for the cards – you can’t argue that with me, I have the same links you do, but I give them all away 🙂
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I am not sure equating cold calling financial “services” with guys approaching girls at a holiday office party is very relevant. Let’s agree to disagree I guess.
You are in the blogs I like for a reason. I like you guys, you are the only type of meeting I attend these days.
I just checked my cc performance. Not a single card sold! Wow, I hope they all went to you or the others in my two approved lists 😉
Matt says
We can talk more on Sat, but I can tell you I know for sure that it is exactly the same thing. I have made thousands of cold calls and sold millions in services. It doesn’t mean I ever scammed anyone.
You won’t see revenue very quickly, reporting is slow, and it will pay less than you might imagine.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I am certain you never scammed anyone.
I know of many who have using these tactics. Maybe it is all a matter of perception and/or life experiences.
Thanks for the info on the cc’s. It’s a learning process for me. I was hoping it pays more than the Amazon link and that incredible media.net ad source (big fat zero for 5 days in a row, woohoo).

British Airways had a lap-belt extender for our infant, and the flight attendants cleared out the aisle for us (by offering the chance for others to move). When I asked US Airways on the return whether they had a lap-belt extender, I was told “that’s not our policy.” For this reason, I like British Airways’s customer service. Of course, in the end they’re all metal tubes with seats and people making sure we don’t die.

Buzz, we’ve read it. We’re not dumb, we get what you are saying. All we are saying is that there is a bit of (I hate to use the word hypocrisy but I don’t know what else to call it) when you direct traffic to and profit from a site with inferior links. It’s not a big deal in the sense that I don’t think you are presenting it in the same way as the pumpers do. But, Matt is right about it impacting your credibility. Now when you call someone out they can easily point a finger right back at you. Those of us who know better can see the difference but if a newby is trying to educate themselves on this particular issue the nuance may be lost on them. I will move on, I think I’ve said enough on this topic.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I think lots has been said on the topic, I am getting tired of it too.
I was actually expecting a stronger pushback from you guys 🙂
I need to find a “compliant” way of highlighting the best offers. After 2 years of going at it at full speed here I guess I am getting tired of not earning anything. I either find a way to make this work or this goes to a once a week rant…you know, like a real hobby as my once a week soccer game obsession 🙂
TBB readers are not noobs!….Or Phil is right about “doing it properly”. I am in it for the journey and trying to figure out the meaning of life. Hope you like the blog content and keep me honest please!
bluecat says
I would like to use that link to throw TBB a bone but do not trust the way he has it. It’s too much work to figure out if link XXX on TBB’s creditcards link is a good offer or not. You expect people to go to MileNerd, look over that list, come back through you to creditcards.com, compare the lists, and double check if creditcards.com has the best offer? Too much work.
I understand that you use MileNerd because you can tell creditcards.com people that you have nothing to do with that site. I suggest you find someone else out to work with you and serve as your “filterer” so that (1) your readers will have pointers to the best offers and (2) you can claim you have nothing to do with the TBB-patsy site. (I’m sure you can arrange something under the table with someone…….)
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Yes it is too much work and that is why these are considered the “porsche” of cc links 🙂 Shows how many times they have been used, big fat ZERO times!
What are you looking for? Ask here or email me.

RE: “cold calls” and our hobby.
I tend to think that we in our hobby like anonymity. Actually, “like” is too weak a word…we REQUIRE it. Think about all the times we take pleasure in racking up points or MS’ing at the expense of some “big, bad corporate bank”. We think nothing of getting one up on them.
But if we had to do our hobby on a PERSONAL level—right to the face of our neighbor at the mom and pop store down the street—I’m sure 99% of us wouldn’t have the chutzpah to do it.
Same with cold calls: they require dealing with another human at a personal level. People who are not into the “relationship aspect” of sales will dread the one-on-one. They want it to be impersonal and anonymous. (Or course, the web not only offers anonymity, it allows you to “scale up” the selling process too.)
Bottom line: I see a parallel between our anonymous behavior in how we game the big banks and in the behavior of bloggers in “gaming” their anonymous readers.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Very interesting analogy…I agree…I think 🙂
bluecat says
Let me simplify: we feel ok about screwing some one or some company as long as we dont have to look them in the eye and be ashamed about our behavior.

I would view the credit card link similar to the amazon link. If your readers are already planning to buy a specific item at amazon then they can use the amazon link to support TBB. You are not saying that amazon always has the best prices on every single item. This is very different than highlighting a specific item for readers to buy at amazon thru your link.

Bingo, exactly!
I would love to take some of the clicks that go to the Titans. Speaking of them the BA Titanic duo is out in full force today!
VFTW: There was a post pimping every one as a “quick way to earn more miles” but mysteriously it vanished as of around noon. Hmmm, I wonder what happened. Massaging those links for “compliance” is a bitch! No wonder he totally missed the ANA award changes…even reader TJ had to let him know…hey TJ, is that you?
OMAAT: All of a sudden, he now wants to tell us the pros and the cons of the British Airways Visa. Coincidence? You can find the same exact offer on TBB cc page two!
MMS: OMG, the mother in law is BACK! Why? Discuss!
DP: “Pumping it properly” to the noobs

Matt-
I like your analogy of the guy meeting a gal at a holiday party. I was wondering: Would the answer change if the gal is married?
Seriously, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with cold calling and/or sales, though I wouldn’t do either as that’s not my DNA. I do think one has to find out the comp structure and know which decisions will change the comp of the sales person. It’s those decisions for which you can’t rely on the sales person’s advice because that advice may be tainted by their desire to make more money. They may not even be aware of their bias, but it’s there.
Fee only people do sell themselves, big time, but if the client is only prejudiced in that decision, not all the others that follow.
True story: I had dinner with a registered rep long ago and his broker/dealer carried two similar products in competition with each other. This rep wokred in a locale with a large contingent of retirees, and-get this-had his office on the second floor of a bank building since it made his cleints feel good to walk through a bank to go see him (the products he sold were not FDIC covered). I asked him which of two very similar products he recommended most and he said that after a lot of due diligence, and running of the numbers, he picked the one with the best YTR. I was innocent back then and, while I knew about IRR and ARR, I did not know YTR so I asked what it stood for.
Yield to Rep.
bluecat says
Of course! Anyone who has ever worked in sales knows that salesreps are the biggest gamers out there! They make us points geeks look like saints. Salesguys know all about the “YTR”, as well as when their accelerators kick in, what it takes to get their quarterly bonus points, how to get to President’s Club, etc.,etc!
ABC says
Salesfolks are masters at sandbagging.
All of a sudden there’s a fat bluebird coming out of nowhere, you beat your sales quota and collect a fat bonus.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
@ Sam: Never heard of YTR Yield to Rep, classic! Thanks for the comment!
I do not want to give the impression that Fee Only advisors are saints or they have no conflicts of interest. It’s just that they have much LESS conflicts of interest and, darn it, compensation is completely transparent and no games are being played. It’s a completely different mindset. Sales type guys who have never experienced the other side can not even comprehend it. I always refer out to fellow Fee Only advisors. I am not saying that commission advisors are all bad, no way. I just don’t want to take the risk of doing that and harming someone when that advisor has a mortgage payment due and…is looking at that super duper annuity that just landed on his desk 🙂
Before my awful experience with Merrill Lynch described somewhere else on this page, I signed up briefly to be a Registered Rep of a life insurance company that was offering load mutual funds and other “products”. My friend was there who was a tax accountant selling some IRAs to clients to save on taxes. He said come over and you can learn more about mutual funds as he knew I was interested. I go there and I am told I need to sell an IRA account with one of the “recommended” funds within 45 days. So…I sold one…to my wife (forgive me honey!) as I wanted to attend the first educational meeting by the guy sent down from the Home Office. I go there and this guy starts talking about, pretty slides and all, the compensation structure of this hot new annuity product and how if we sold X number of them we can get a FREE cruise to Jamaica. I ran away fast and did not speak to my friend for several years. He apologized years later after telling me he left when things got crazy (the beginning of the dot com crap, they were pressured to sell Putnam funds a lot). Yikes. Formative experiences for sure…
Anonymous says
you need to stop using the word titans. so annoying.

Broke in Jersey says
Been reading you are a financial planner. Here’s my story. Two medical collections and crappy credit score of around 590. What financial planner advice do you give to your clients regarding your secured credit card links from your affiliate links? Is there one in particular you like or gets lots of approvals? Which one would you recommend for me? Yea, I know you get a commission and that’s ok with me.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I must admit I know NOTHING about secured credit card links. Actually, I just clicked them on my site for the FIRST time and did not like what I saw. I guess they all come with annual fees which would probably make sense.
Does any other reader know and give an impartial educational answer?
I would probably focus on working and replenishing nest eggs and maybe try to get a gas or retail store card and use it responsibly to slowly build the credit score back up? This is a wild guess. I am not going to pretend I know the answer, I am definitely NOT an expert on secured credit cards!
Whatever you end up doing, you must use the card every month AND PAY THE FULL BALANCE EVERY MONTH. You do that for 6 months to a year and the score will go up by A LOT!
Thanks for the comment.
TWA44 says
Hey. Buzz, I think Broke in Jersey just might be Ramsey….
I was going to point this out but Matt already did. Saverocity has the same links as Buzz. We are not giving him a hard time because he too emphasizes that his links may not be the best. George calls out bloggers with bad affiliate practices. Including his own links (and modeling a way to do it right) is not hypocrisy.I think George has provided enough warning about the quality of his links.
You don’t want to use them? Don’t. You want to click ’em to help ol’ George when there’s a card he’s got that want, go for it. When I apply for new cards I figure out the best links for my needs and then I see if any of the bloggers I like have it. It is not that much work and I figure they have given me lots of helpful info or they wouldn’t be my favs. So I am willing to devote a little bit of time to spreading my love (and affiliate revenue) around.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
But no Avatar 🙂
I went through my links today. Surprisingly, many of the cards everyone is pumping are the same exact ones offered with my links. And yes there are a bunch of crappy ones (Carnival visa anyone, oh god please NO!) that you are all smart enough not to bother!
>>>>>>>>>>When I apply for new cards I figure out the best links for my needs and then I see if any of the bloggers I like have it. Kenny says
A funny thing happened when I lost my affiliate links. I went through the links on my site to make sure they actually were the best. And sure enough, my Arrival link wasn’t as good as the available one with 0% intro rate. Of course no one playing this game should carry a balance or pay interest, but given the fragile state of MS gigs I’d want to have a 0% card in my toolbox at all times in case liquidation takes much longer than expected. I had put an offer on my site that wasn’t the best offer. Not because I cared about the $100 or so I might have ‘earned’, but because the very presence of affiliate links made me lazy.
TJ says
I actually applied for two Arrivals through your link. if you had recommended the 0% card instead, I would have been wary of your advice….even for MS you shouldn’t have more outstanding balance than you can pay with cash.
Kenny says
Thanks, TJ! I agree on having that cushion and I don’t recommend actually using the 0%, but I would still say the 0% offer is the best offer out there. If something goes wrong with someone’s MS streams and any other expensive thing happens (health, accident, etc.), having access to a short-term 0% loan is better than not having access to one.
