Today I am going to share with you another batch of 101 additional advices about life from Kevin Kelly, how USA optimists can unite to fight the pessimists, sadly a big new way to get rich that will most likely lead to ruin many young men instead, a fascinating article titled “Cloud Under The Sea” that will educate us all about an industry we know nothing about and owe so much to as we all use the internet all the time and we end with a fascinating story about Terrance the octopus who comes home and gives birth to fifty little ones and you won’t believe what happened next. The regular longer post returns on Friday featuring the usual mix of eclectic curated links along with my commentary, thank you for reading my blog.

Back with another short Tuesday post. I will see you all Friday with the usual longer post.
Tuesday posts are intended to be short by design and to act like a little escape in your busy lives because, you know, I even have no idea what will show up here. But make no mistake, there will be something to educate and/or entertain you and sometimes inspire you.
101 Additional Advices
And just when you thought Kevin Kelly would run out of things to say, here he is with another 101 tips about life and stuff like that. I picked some to excerpt below:
Try to define yourself by what you love and embrace, rather than what you hate and refuse.
You owe everyone a second chance, but not a third.
Most arguments are not really about the argument, so most arguments can’t be won by arguing.
Changing your mind about important things is not a consequence of stupidity, but a sign of intelligence.
You have no obligation to like everyone, and you are free to intensely dislike a person. But you owe everyone—even those you dislike—basic respect.
Doing good is its own reward. When you do good, people will question your motive, and any good you accomplish will soon be forgotten. Do good anyway.
Avoid making any kind of important decision when you are either hungry, angry, lonely, or tired (HALT). Just halt when you are HALT.
The highest form of wealth is deciding you have enough.
When you are right, you are learning nothing.
Humility is mostly about being very honest about how much you owe to luck.
Five Things To Be Optimistic About in America Today
Sometimes I feel like I am alone fighting an inexplicable and persistent pessimistic streak lately. This article will remind us all that so much is way better these days! Enough doom and gloom, let’s allow ourselves a moment of happiness.
Crime is going way down
We’re making progress against climate change
The US economy is growing pretty fast
Younger generations are doing better than their parents
Wage inequality is falling
The Big New Way to Get Rich
This is something I wanted to lay out but the author did such a better job. Something needs to be done about this…Want to make a fortune? Target bored young men who want to make a fortune.
The level at which gambling has become normalized in the United States in recent years is stunning. Americans legally bet a record $119.84 billion on sports in 2023, up from $93 billion in 2022. [Yikes]
Younger men see their friends playing in crypto or betting on sports, and they want to join in. Many of them have income they’re not doing more productive things with, especially in the wake of a pandemic that has a lot of consumers who were once trying to save up thinking, “Eh, screw it.” Maybe 40 years ago a 28-year-old had a mortgage and a family to support. Now he doesn’t have those responsibilities and can direct disposable income toward whichever stock he just saw recommended on Reddit or a bet on whether the next pitch in a baseball game will be a ball or a strike.
Many young people are being exposed to gambling for the first time. and a wide variety of products are being marketed aggressively to them. All the advertising dollars that have been spent on sports-betting platforms and crypto exchanges, for example, have amplified the exposure effect. The other part of the story is that many of these people haven’t gambled before: Unlike a 60-year-old who’s been there, done that, they haven’t internalized the downsides.
Casinos, sportsbooks, and trading platforms want to make money off bettors, and the way to do that is to get them to play more, not less. While many young men will eventually move on from their betting habits, not all of them will — and the company’s hope is to turn them into clients for life.
The Cloud Under The Sea
Amazing article about something we have no idea about as we all use the Internet. Thanks to a small group of boats and people aboard who go repair broken cables buried in the oceans. We should be grateful to them and hope we can get more into this industry as most of them are getting too old to do this work. It is long and so worth it imho.
The world is in the midst of a cable boom, with multiple new transoceanic lines announced every year. But there is growing concern that the industry responsible for maintaining these cables is running perilously lean. There are 77 cable ships in the world, according to data supplied by SubTel Forum, but most are focused on the more profitable work of laying new systems. Only 22 are designated for repair, and it’s an aging and eclectic fleet. Often, maintenance is their second act. Some, like Alcatel’s Ile de Molene, are converted tugs. Others, like Global Marine’s Wave Sentinel, were once ferries. Global Marine recently told Data Centre Dynamics that it’s trying to extend the life of its ships to 40 years, citing a lack of money. One out of 4 repair ships have already passed that milestone. The design life for bulk carriers and oil tankers, by contrast, is 20 years.
The Joys and Challenges of Caring for Terrance the Octopus
Young kid is infatuated with the octopus. Family decides to bring one home. And then…you won’t believe what happened next when the octopus gave birth to 60 hatchlings!
This blog started with a focus on miles and points and travel. It has evolved since then. All the miles & points sections return on Friday, along with the other gems you have become accustomed to.
