I am making an attempt to stay positive in Trump world. Maybe you should too. America will survive this. We hope. Our institutions are stronger than one man. Buckle up for four years of surprises…

Dazed and confused. Depressed. WTF just happened? I am just not talking about the election of Donald Trump to the US Presidency. Just writing that literally hurts! If you are a pollster, please consider changing careers. Anyways, illegal immigration will be taken care of as not many would be coming to the US now! I could go on but I will let you deal with this the best you can. If you can. If not, there is always Canada. I am not going anywhere. What, go to Greece? Are you insane?
To make the present situation even more depressing, we heard of the tragic news to yet another death of a high school student my daughter goes to. You need to understand that since the beginning of the school year it is the 3rd student death! One by suicide, one run over by a car in the same corner near school I drive by every single day and just two days ago a kid from an accidental fall at one of the main parking structures in downtown Ann Arbor. Apparently, he was playing along and doing a stupid dare. To hit home, he was my daughter’s good friend. She is devastated. How do you explain to a kid about this, the unfairness of life huh? I can tell she is really affected by it. And just because this did not suck enough….when they released the name of the student….my first thought was “Oh no, hope it is not Steve’s boy”. And yet it was as he had a super sad statement in his Facebook page along with the picture of his boy. Steve is a colleague of mine, he comes to my Panera store. How can a family cope and overcome this? Words do not begin to describe the feelings…compounded with the lunatic we elected to the White House. WTF is going on around here people!
Anyways, here are a few worthy things to read about in this Trump world. I am still distraught we managed to elect this con douche bag to the Presidency, wow. And here is hoping that he won’t be that bad. First signs are encouraging…
It’s Going To Be Okay – Must read by Wait But Why.
One Crucial Investing Question: Are Your Goals Different Now?. Great read. Don’t make any stupid timing moves!
How Bad Will Donald Trump Be? I am trying to make you feel better. It is a tall task. But I am hopeful and optimistic he won’t be as bad…
Could a Trump Presidency Lead to a Stock Market Bubble? Yeah, it could happen. Nobody knows anything, remember that always! I say stick to your investing plan, stay diversified and focus on what you can control. And vote damn it…almost 47% of voters did not vote. WTF!!!!
No miles & points stuff. Not like there is anything worthy going on lately…
Hug your kids. Often.

Nick @ Personal Finance Digest says
The polls actually weren’t too bad this year. They missed the popular vote by a couple of points which is in line with the historical average. The poll interpreters, on the other hand…
ABC says
Data generation is always easier than understanding the data. The popular vote is easier to predict than the electoral college. Just about every poll indicated that Hillary would win the electoral college. Even Nate silver gave HRC a 71% chance of winning. I wouldn’t say that 538’s model was successful.
Nick @ Personal Finance Digest says
Silver’s received plenty of flack from both the left and the right this year, but I think he did a good job all things considered. His model was successful in that it generated a respectable model based on the data fed into it. Silver had pointed out that state polls tend to be systemically biased (i.e. they tend to be wrong in the same direction) which is why his model had a much higher chance of Trump winning than some others (30-35%). A couple days before the election some writer from HuffPo even called out Silver and his model for being too favorable for Trump.
Also keep in mind that in 2012 the polls favored Romney by 4% vs. the final outcome. That could have just as easily been the result this year and it would have been a landslide for Hillary. Hindsight is always 20/20.
ABC says
Nate missed that Trump would win the republican nomination. Nate’s model gave HRC a 71% chance of winning the electoral college. You’ld be better off relying on a coin flip (50% chance). If your predictions are poorer than a coin flip, your model is not respectable. And if you don’t have the “right data”, no model will work.

I may not like the man as a person, but I do like what I think he will do. I cannot retire because healthcare costs too much. My wife got a pension check and it through us into another tax bracket and we take home less then we did before. Something is wrong there. We cannot survive with free borders. Having worked mostly for large very successful companies most of my life, I am use to a business that gets things done in a hurry. I am hoping that will be a transferred to the government. What is wrong with asking others countries to pay their fair share for our support. Other countries tax our goods going to them greatly, why don’t we tax their incoming goods the same? I am hoping that our government will run more like a business and not so much like the free for all give away that we have seen over the past 100 years. I am actually hopefull. People were this scared when Regan took over and he did quite well for the country. I am going to Cuba on Dec. 27, I hope I can get back.
TBBTheDude says
I am giving him the benefit of the doubt for now. I really like how he is handling himself since his win. But that will likely prove to be wishful thinking not too long from now. I hope I am wrong!
I disagree with many of your points.
“Healthcare costs too much”. Oh yes it does. Compared to other countries, it is beyond ridiculous. Obamacare has its problems, no doubt about that. But I think it was the right thing to do and will certainly work in due time to lower costs if it is improved upon. Killing it will get us back to square one. I had several clients take advantage of it since its birth (no prior conditions, millenial kids with degrees and no job staying at home, etc.).
“We cannot survive with free borders”. What the heck does this mean? I think immigrants give more than they take. Yes, in isolated cases, that may not be true. But look around you…all the big tech companies in Silicon Valley were started by immigrants. We live in a globalized economy. Erasing walls and tariffs against other nations is a recipe for disaster imho.
” I am use to a business that gets things done in a hurry. I am hoping that will be a transferred to the government”.
Good luck with that. Government is not a business. If it was, we should all be getting dividends. I know how government works in Greece…believe me, that is not how you want things run over here. Everyone bitching about the government here…last I heard, govt work force has never been so much leaner. Obama killed a lot of govt jobs…that darn Socialist lol.
>>>>>>>>>What is wrong with asking others countries to pay their fair share for our support.
We make up so much of that in having leverage and much more….I am not sure we are all there for free…plus, it’s govt jobs and contracts on the line too!
>>>>>>>>> I am hoping that our government will run more like a business and not so much like the free for all give away that we have seen over the past 100 years.
Yet again, we have seen so much progress in our world in the past 100 years!
>>>>>>>>>> I am actually hopeful.
In a bizarre way, I am too. I hope Trump rises to the occasion and actually gets some things done. And actually do something to unite the country. He actually has the potential to accomplish a lot by not having all the political baggage. Then again, seeing the people he surrounds himself with, I am not that hopeful. But so far after winning he has done only good things. Which is shocking!

I think you are being intentionally vague here. No one is arguing about immigrants. They are arguing about illegal immigration. You cant simply walk across the border and decide you are an American. There are steps that are taken to become a citizen. There are plenty of people already in line and waiting to become citizens. Those that have done it legally and are waiting to be approved. Immigrants wanted, illegally no thanks.
ABC says
Who’s gonna pick your fruit? Ain’t enough H2Bs for all of that fruit. Or are you advocating that all of them should be made legal? How many legal immigrants are you willing to accept every year? 3M, 5M?
MileageUpdate says
Im advocating that having people illegally in the country is bad for the country. I cant believe your best argument could be “whos gonna pick your fruit”. Whatever level of immigration needs to be legal not illegally. Whats are number now? Around 1m a yr?
ABC says
I like your openness to massively increase legal immigration. A broader Cuban Adjustment Act for all citizens of the world. Often the “legal” immigration argument is code for a return to immigration laws before 1965.
MileageUpdate says
Im for immigrants and immigration. Just legally.

So sorry to hear about your daughter’s friend and classmates. Those are the things to really be upset over. Trump? Nah. This is just another election, life and the country will march on. No Prez is ever as quite as great as his supporters claim or as bad as his detractors say.
And I’m sure had there been cameras, video, the internet, etc. for the past 200 years we’d be shocked and appalled at some of the things past Presidents said in private or otherwise. Even some of the writings and statements we do have are quite disturbing to our 21st century minds. (Nope I didn’t vote for Trump and dont’ like him, but just trying to keep some perspective)
Now who will make Frequent Flyer Programs great again? That’s what I want to know! lol

I’m sorry for your daughter’s loss of her friend through such senseless actions. Tough lessons early.
Good luck helping her through.

Saw the news about your daughter’s friend in your last post and didn’t comment because the words just did not come. But I must chime in to say I am so sorry to hear of such a senseless loss and that I hope his family and yours will deal with it as well as is possible. Very hard road for all; my sincerest condolences.
When I think of my kids and what I hope for them, having and using good judgement is very high on the list. A friend of mine, when reading to her children, used to replace phrases like “There was once a beautiful princess” with “There was once a kind princess” to underline that kindness trumps beauty. [Oh, boy, that came out before I realized the irony!] What we all need going forward is kindness and good judgement. May they combine to make the future brighter than many of us now fear.
TBBTheDude says
Wow, your note is so wonderful. Really took the “using good judgement” message home to her again today.

I’m so happy the terrible woman is not gonna chase me from the tv screen anymore.
Will never see her again! What a day. If she goes to prison, it would be so amazing.
Afraid it’s not gonna happen 🙁
TBBTheDude says
I never understood why she deserved feelings like that. Never. Then again, it explains why she lost…she could never relate well in campaign mode. I thought she was much more qualified to run the country like the dude we now have to deal with for four years. I wish him (and us) the best.

Feel your shock and grief. Really a shame about those kids. Haven’t felt this nauseous, and scared, over election results since Tricky Dick in 1968. But I think this con artist takes the title from tricky Dick.

Just dont be a moper. So much drama. What most that are on the left are not remembering how hysterical those on the right were when Obama won. Now the left has its turn to be hysterical. Too many people are scared and afraid because their candidate lost. Dont live in fear, you are still required to take care of your own house and your individual interactions with others. The rest you cant control. You gotta suck it up and live.
ABC says
No drama here “Trump was endorsed by the KKK’s official newspaper. And after his victory became official Wednesday morning, former KKK Imperial Wizard David Duke tweeted: “This is one of the most exciting nights of my life. Make no mistake about it, our people have played a HUGE role in electing Trump!””
Maybe they are scared about the forces released.
MileageUpdate says
you can be scared about a lot of stuff. Terrorism, dying young, fear of people with a different skin color. Its just my experience to not live your life being afraid/scared of things. You can certainly choose to live anyway you’d like. Just kinda of shocked at how fearful/scared/afraid so many people are in their daily lives
Ramsey ..... says
@ABC, what is your point? There are about 8 people in the KKK nowadays.
MileageUpdate says
but but but Nazis.
TBBTheDude says
>>>>>>>>What most that are on the left are not remembering how hysterical those on the right were when Obama won.
The drama is induced based on the vote expectations. What happened with Trump is something that is equivalent to the shock of Greece winning the Euro Championship in 2004. NOBODY expected them to make it out of the first round. Same with the Donald… #wow
>>>>>>>>>>>>Too many people are scared and afraid because their candidate lost.
Well, based on what this dude has said while campaigning…I find it to be a perfectly normal reaction.
>>>>>>>>>>>>Dont live in fear, you are still required to take care of your own house and your individual interactions with others. The rest you cant control. You gotta suck it up and live.
Agreed. Like I said above, hope the guy proves me wrong. He does not have the political baggage and that is a big plus to unite us.

When sitting in Bahamas airport office where everybody was black, their TV was loud and it was CNN. Clinton just triggered something about deplorables. Remind you I cut TV out more than 10 years ago as I cut out noise from my life as much as I can. Now they started talking about how Trump supporters think that blacks are less smart than whites and lazy. I was sitting in the office surrounded by all these black Bahamians and felt the worst in ages. It confirmed how evil Clinton is. As we travel, we get to know the world and respect all cultures and want to maintain peace. This lady triggered the worst war that keeps going on without ending. This gang of Bush and Clinton created ISIS. She lost against Obama yet she comes back. You flush it, it creeps back. What an ugly woman that rolls her eyes. There is no bigger evil than evil of war, which is evil of Clinton 😉
