Another TBB post featuring the most eclectic links around the web such as 2023 stock market charts & cycles, the Hyperloop scam, the best pink sand beaches, how to get easy hotel elite status, we expose 403(b) plans, we go inside an online scam labor camp, someway somehow a client of JP Morgan turned a $50 Million portfolio to just $1.5 Million, an amazing story written by an abused child and how she recovered, fascinating stuff about the Kikkoman soy sauce bottles, always amazing photography, breath taking churches and of course the must read material in the quirky miles and points blogs blog space. Happy New Year and see you on Tuesday.

Welcome to my quirky original authentic blog. It all started back in 2012 focusing on my crazy hobby addiction of frequent flyer miles, hotel and bank points. It has since evolved to a curated weekly post of the best web content I find along with my commentary. Here to Educate primarily, sometimes Entertain and if I get to Inspire you, well, that is a bonus.
This blog publishes on Fridays. This is a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it white it lasts. I may post on a Tuesday going forward whenever I get to it. Update: Come back for at least the next few Tuesdays when I will be posting a collection of 2023 Annual Best of lists, something I have been doing over the years around Christmas/New Year’s holidays.

If you have a 403(b) retirement plan at work, you are most likely getting screwed: Investing for retirement — Why you might want to reconsider that 403(b). It is a great shame that these plans are handled this way for so long. There is a website 403bWise that keeps track of the abuses in this space and tries to improve them.
Fiduciary rules typically don’t apply to public school 403(b) plans, Otter says. School districts may contract with dozens of companies to offer retirement investments while refusing to provide employees with any guidance or advice, he says. That’s when insurance companies peddling expensive investments, including variable annuities and high-cost mutual funds, step in. “Guess who is emailing teachers? Guess who is going to the school districts and offering free lunch? It’s the high-cost companies doing this,” Otter explains.
You will soon start reading many articles about how you can get 529 Plan college fund accounts and turn them into tax-free Roth IRA accounts for the kids. Don’t believe the hype. There are many restrictions to get this done and it is very limited. Strings Attached. If little Johnny does not go to college…you can always switch the beneficiary to another family member until little Johnny comes to his senses. Some of the obstacles are:
- There’s a lifetime limit of $35,000 per beneficiary that can be transferred from a 529 to a Roth.
- The amount that can be transferred each year is limited to the amount that could otherwise be contributed directly to an IRA. In 2024, that will be $7,000, meaning that it would take five years to move the entire $35,000.
- In years when funds are moved from a 529 to a Roth, those funds will count toward the beneficiary’s IRA contribution limit. Suppose that parents transfer $4,000 from a 529 account to their child’s Roth IRA. Since the child’s overall IRA contributions are capped at $7,000, he or she could only contribute an additional $3,000 directly to an IRA that year.
- The beneficiary would need to have earned income that’s at least equal to the 529-to-Roth transfer amount, just like the requirement for a regular IRA contribution. The child doesn’t have any earned income? No transfer is allowed.
- To be sure parents use the new provision in the way it was intended—that is, truly for surplus funds—there are two additional restrictions. First, the 529 account must be at least 15 years old. Second, any funds contributed to the 529 within the most recent five years aren’t eligible to be transferred. Neither of these restrictions is a permanent obstacle, but they can slow transfers.
This New York Times gets inside one of these online scam operations. And it is harrowing to learn what they are doing to people: 7 Months Inside an Online Scam Labor Camp. I read recently that there were some raids in these places and many were arrested, which is of course great and about time.
I always thought this was so stupid and here we go: The Hyperloop was always a scam. It’s time to be honest about Musk’s vacuum tube to nowhere.
After reading this article, I had a lot of conflicting thoughts. I guess this will take the legal route and we will have to wait to see the outcome. But it takes special “skills” to “grow” a portfolio from $50 Million down to $1.5 Million, wow! JP Morgan Is in a Fight Over Its Client’s Lost $50 Million Fortune. You take an extreme risk tolerant person, you add dementia and bankers who are not fiduciaries looking to maximize fees for the bank (and their bonuses) and you get a tragic situation like this. Clients like this are addicted to risk and they will never be satisfied if you try to slow them down. Meaning, I don’t care how much money any potential client has, they will not become my client if they don’t listen to sensible advice. And please avoid investing in Master Limited Partnerships (MLPs). And this smh:
In some years, they paid more than $400,000 in interest on the JPMorgan loans and at times more than $250,000 in advisory fees to the bank and Chickasaw.

This is one of those special stories from The New Yorker that just stays with you. Deals with personal trauma inflicted on children, in the name of science. You add Nazis, bullying, orphans and wild young parents and, all I can say, it just blew my mind. Not a happy read, you have been warned: Behind a Locked Door. As a girl in Austria, Evy Mages was confined to a mysterious institution in Innsbruck. Decades later, she learned why.

- Woke is the most searched definition in Canada (7,200/month).

We are all aware of the Kikkoman Soy Sauce. And we all most likely had no idea about its unique bottle. The Kikkoman Soy Sauce Bottle Is Priceless. Special releases of the iconic soy sauce bottle can fetch hundreds of dollars online, especially among Americans, who have formed a deep relationship with the Japanese brand. I had no idea all these bottles are manufactured in a factory in Walworth, Wisconcin since 1973!

TRAVEL
We travel back in time. To Bulgaria. Where more of the former Communists in charge for decades managed to somehow come up in front leading their countries out of the shit. Okay, whatever. The Closing of the Bulgarian Frontier. Author made it out to the US and went back and…you won’t believe what happened next! Anyway, the writing quality is superb:
It was the end of 2010, and I had decided to move back to my native Bulgaria. I’d spent more than a decade in the United States, getting an education and putting a life together, and had never imagined I’d be retracing my steps eastward someday, like a criminal revisiting a crime scene. Some people considered you a failure if you came back; they said you lacked ambition and inner resources to stick it out. If you were lucky enough to get away, why throw your luck to the dogs? Wasn’t it better to settle down in a “normal” place, where buses ran on time and you didn’t need to bribe every traffic cop who pulled you over? It was perfectly fine to visit your relatives for a week over Christmas or to sprawl during the summer on the beaches of the Black Sea, splurging hard-earned cash to make the neighbors envious, but to return home for good, unforced by circumstances, bordered on madness. It was irrational, irresponsible, and possibly suicidal. The imp of the perverse. You never looked over your shoulder, lest you turn into a pillar of salt.

How do you spend almost 50 years in jail for a crime you did not commit? Shouldn’t that be a crime? Glynn Simmons declared innocent after serving 48 years in prison – believed to be the longest of any exoneree. He is eligible for only $175,000 compensation smh.

Is there any other card more overrated than Bilt? The card has never had a true Signup Bonus which is what we in this hobby are really into. So, why is this way overrated card getting so much press in the miles and points blogs? Well, it is marketing. It has poured its marketing budget to reaching out to blogs in this space and, you know, wine and dine them in exclusive trips to resort islands and stuff like that. So when the company announces a devaluation that will make even Delta blush by going that far, Bilt Making Changes to Loyalty Program, the bloggers just can not get themselves in the right frame of mind to call this devaluation what it is, simply horrific. Even over at Frequent Miler we get this about the changes, “difficult to judge“. Seriously?
I guess your blogger was not one of the “best 11 minds in loyalty” to be invited to ultra exclusive Moskito Island courtesy of Bilt’s marketing department. Not that I would have accepted the invite, I mean, how can you write a TRULY objective review of a company’s products when they wine and dine you in places like Moskito Island! One more thing and we move on…A reader got this card with my referral link and I am still waiting for the points to post smh.

I’ve found that almost every program has a donation thing for soldiers and other good folks. Just have to actually call to donate them. Bit of an effort but better than letting them just fade out.
LOTS of good stuff here as always! Thanks ever so much! Have a great weekend and a Happy New Year to you and all your family!

Well, just used your referral link for a business cash Ink…. went pending. Not holding my breath but fingers crossed!
D’you think I should just wait to hear from them or call sooner? Never have done that before but have read of people who have done so.
GeorgeTBB says
I used to call minutes after it went pending. I have lightened up as the years went by. I now wait a few days at least. It appears Chase is really backed up so they won’t get to your app for several days. If this is your first one and all is good on your end you will likely get approved next week. With the holidays and all, maybe wait and call on Tuesday or Wednesday to seal the deal.
And thanks!

I find Bilt to be quite rewarding as I pay my in-laws assisted living rent with the card. The Bilt loyalty program has never been it’s strong suit for me personally. Making nothing even less valuable is not exactly a loss. The ability to earn points for rent that can be transferred to partners including the only(?) card to transfer to AA is quite nice. Rent day promotions can be lucrative as well. I didn’t receive an island getaway invitation either but, I’ll take a minimum 8000 points a month for zero cost. For me, the hype or rather the reality is legit.
GeorgeTBB says
There are always exceptions, I was talking about this card just being a niche product getting WAY too much hype for a card without a SUB. Most do not pay rent and the earning structure is blah. Glad it works for you but for the average potential credit card holder out there…why would you even bother when everyone and their dog can get a no annual fee Chase Ink card that can net you 100k…Anyway, I don’t get it. But I can assure you this card would have never seen so much hype if Bilts’ marketing dollars were not going to wine and dine the bloggers. Who keep saying that they don’t get paid by Bilt but NO ONE comes out and flatly discloses they got wined and dined at Moskito Island! And wtf happened that photo with all the bloggers at Moskito Island, looks like it has vanished from the internet, I wanted to add it to my post.
This space is so phucking conflicted is unbelievable.

I hadn’t realized that getting Ink cards was so easy. I may have to see for my wife since she’s 3/24.
Happy New Year man. Thanks for keeping it kicking for another year.
GeorgeTBB says
Yeah, looks like Jamie Dimon will not retire until every one and their dog gets a Chase product in their hands/wallets/browsers/apps! It is kind of crazy actually.
Thanks, Happy New Year to you too. I can’t believe I am still here actually. The few clicks here and there make me go on believing one day I will be discovered lol.
GeorgeTBB says
Chase is just ridiculous at this point you guys.
Fully expected to get the “Review” thingie but wife was approved for a Chase Ink Business Unlimited card. She got a Chase Ink Business Cash card two months ago and that one went to review and we had to shuffle some credit if I remember correctly and got only a $5k credit limit. So I fully expected to fight for this one as well but nope, here is $6k credit limit. Wow!
Some manager wants to hit bonus numbers it appears.
Go for it guys, thanks for applying with my links. Seeing data points around the web, it is a free for all it appears. Maybe this 90k promo ends 12/31?
Christian says
Got a Chase Ink approval for P2 through your link. I’d do one for me but I’d need to know more about churning the cards or getting duplicates before doing so since I’m nowhere near as bright as Dan and already have the ones I want. If anyone has some insight I may give it a shot anyway
