COVID-19
This is a great site to keep track of the outbreak: 91-DIVOC: An interactive visualization of the exponential spread of COVID-19.
This was written on May 4, 2017. Reading it will freak you out, so prophetic! The World Is Not Ready for the Next Pandemic. Must read.
This one deals with the dismal economic choices at global pandemic times like the one we are living through: The Four Rules of Pandemic Economics.
We need to get people money, or they will die. We need to get companies cash, or they will die. But if we don’t clear the way for health-care workers to treat the sick, or for scientists to treat the disease, people and companies are going to die, anyway. There is no such thing as a normal economy until we contain the virus. But if we can’t contain the virus quickly, we might not have anything normal to return to.
Well, this is true: The Coronavirus Is the World’s Only Superpower. There has been some weird shit we see every day in the chaotic debacle to fight the virus in the US. Like, out of left field, we hear how we are going to fight the war on drugs in the Caribbean or something…smh. It was all fun and games before with the economy roaring ahead…now it is body bags and apparently it is not going to magically disappear *^&$!
The day before, when more than a thousand Americans died of the disease, the President staged a bizarre photo opportunity with the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Secretary of Defense, and other national-security leaders, to announce an oddly timed opening of a major new front in America’s war on Mexican drug cartels. During the event, Trump extemporized about what he often calls his “big, beautiful” wall on the southern border and its “tremendous impact,” and announced that he would deploy various Navy and Coast Guard ships for the new drug-fighting mission. (He also bragged about his “No. 1” status on Facebook, accused the former Secretary of State John Kerry of violating the law by advising Iran, and lamented, yet again, that no one could have possibly foreseen the global pandemic that nearly every global-health leader had been warning about for years.) After this performance, I received a note from a former senior State Department official in the Trump Administration: “Seriously, WTF?? A new war on drugs? These people have so lost the plot it’s beyond parody.” Foreign Policy later reported that the whole thing had been just what it seemed to be: a political optics play by the President. “DoD was against it,” a former Trump Administration official told the magazine. “Didn’t matter to POTUS.”
Lets stay positive. Oh, wait…maybe that is not good to say that anymore, sad lol! “We Will Get through This”: A Physician and Venture Capitalist on Coronavirus. Very educational interview!
This is another chapter in the viral wars on the human race. We have had many attacks in past eons. Today, fortunately, we have the tools to better characterize them at the molecular level. In the future, we need to be earlier in becoming aware of their arrival, to prevent them from getting out of control. We have already eliminated some other viruses from the world, including smallpox and polio, which are virtually gone. We now have vaccines for influenza, though they could be better. Given the advances in medical knowledge and molecular biology, especially in the last decade, and with the full focus of the world on this one challenge — we will get through this.

MILES & POINTS
HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS: New: The CitiBusiness AAdvantage Platinum now offers 70k AA miles. There is an offer for the United Explorer card offering 60,000 miles. The IHG Rewards Club card offering 140k points too, highest ever. For a standard workhorse card I recommend the 60k Chase Sapphire Preferred card. For a standard premium card I recommend the 50k Chase Sapphire Reserve card. For a standard 2% cash back card I recommend the Citi Double Cash card. Available with my links. Lets move on!
Another nice job by Hyatt: Good News: Hyatt Is Extending Elite Status and Benefits for One Year. IHG Rewards came up with a much weaker policy by extending status requirements only but they will likely follow along too I think.
I see another IHG Rewards credit card offer for a no annual fee card offering 75k points. If you are allergic to annual fees maybe you go for this one? The one above offering 140k points has an annual fee of $89.
And now Delta extends Medallion Status, Club Memberships and more to support SkyMiles Members’ future travel. And United matches Delta as they always do. Your turn AA!
This post has a really good overview of the oneworld alliance and its latest member Royal Air Maroc airlines. If your AA miles are still alive after this viral period…maybe we ‘ll be all flying to Casablanca for free!
Remember the Daily Getaways promo where every blogger would just go on and on and on and on about the same deal that you needed to risk injury to your fingers to be able to manage to get one through of the few packages that were offered online in a very time limited period. But hey, it was always easy to serve this up along with a bunch of credit card affiliate links with it. So, let’s celebrate that these Daily Getaways GoAways have been postponed until sometime in the Fall…Hooray!
TRAVEL
This will shock you! TSA checkpoint travel numbers for 2020 and 2019.
United also pretty much just pulled the plug out of almost all flights out of the New York City area. AA used to fly 271 flights out of NYC, now they are down to just 13, wow.
You are not going anywhere so why don’t you Explore LiveCams!

Sad to see the Intercontinental Hong Kong closing this month only to pour millions in renovations and come back again in 2022 as a Regent brand. I stayed in it a couple of times (for free of course, come on!) and I just LOVE the view from it!
PERSONAL FINANCE
Hopefully you have your jobs. But some of you may not and I am sure you will know someone affected. This site will help: 2020 Maximum Weekly Unemployment Benefits By State. Remember, you get what you get from your state plus an additional federal $600 per week amount from the Feds! Which covers self-employed and independent contractors too. All State Unemployment offices are just mega SLAMMED…so be patient. Got an email from the Michigan office that the best time to apply online is between 4 to 5 am #youhavebeenwarned.
Great personal finance article: Facts of Life. Yeah, nobody minds volatility when it is going up!
To earn handsome long-run returns, we must run the risk of severe short-term losses—and those losses occur with brutal regularity.
I think about the folks who took out large mortgages to buy apartments and houses, and then aimed to cover their borrowing costs with short-term rental income from customers of Airbnb, Vrbo and similar services. It might have looked like easy money (or somewhat easy, given the work involved in cleaning up after short-term tenants) and less risky than being the landlord of a single tenant, who might fail to pay the rent and prove difficult to evict. But as we’ve discovered, there was a serious risk—the risk that the entire world would hunker down at home and stop traveling.
Did the Florida Governor want to kill many of its residents by waiting so long to take social distancing measures? At Risk: The Geography of America’s Senior Population. Currently, 16% of Americans are age 65 or older. Florida is #2 at 20.5%. And which state is #1? You will never guess! Maine is #1 at 20.6%. See what you learn here in my blog? You are welcome!
ODDZ & ENDZ
I should add snopes.com in my Resources page one of these days when I get around to it. One of the most highly trusted sites online. Like TBB…cough! An Interview With Snopes.com About Fighting Coronavirus Lies. I should have added this in the Covid-19 section above but I wanted to spread things out a bit. He is a colorful guy. 🙂
How do you stop the horses from shitting?
Yeah. We’re not solving for that. We’re trying to figure out new ways to aggregate shit.

BLOG BUZZ
We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.
We have the first conversion this month, thanks to the reader who got the amazing Chase Sapphire Preferred card!
Ran a 9 mile PR on Sunday. If it was not for running I would have gained so much weight as staying home so much does not help and I certainly need to do better on that social distancing thing from my fridge!
Looks like the Frugal Travel Guy website may be dead, last post showing was on March 23, 2020. A sad ending to a sad sad blog…Good riddance!
I did not like the anti Chinese/pro conspiracy theory turn DansDeals took in its latest excellent news roundup post. I am very sad to see it, I am not linking to it so that will cost him a few diapers shopping Amazon clicks, so there! Maybe instead of blaming the Chinese he should be more angry about how awful our own preparedness was instead of taking the easy blame route? Like me, watch these:
WTF is wrong with these people?
Maybe be very angry with these clowns instead?
I doubt this doc will ever be invited back again, LOL.
All right, some virus humor so you can smile a little.

Buzz-
Thanks for another collection of interesting reading.
There an Osprey Cam on a nest in the next town over from Boulder.
https://www.bouldercounty.org/open-space/management/osprey-camera/
For about 15 years, the same two Ospreys have come to the nest at the end of March, had their fun and produced several eggs. The eggs become chicks, get bigger and during the summer, learn to fly and eventually leave. Lots of drama for the followers (000s) as sometimes the chicks die in late spring snow storms.
One year the camera went dead and there was no show for the rest of the season. Long summer for the faithful that year. Kind of a quarantine preview, if you will.
This site is really ripe for some affiliate links. I could see hotels tying-in with a ‘just like home’ theme, and airlines using images of the male osprey catching a fish each morning and everyone in the nest eating it still alive. Hey-I know that airline and my status was just extended until Trump leaves office.
Note to Ramses: OK, sport. It’s Monday morning. Give us the Dow at the close on Friday. You’re welcome to call a friend (or Cramer).

I did the Airbnb thing for about 3.5 years and it IS work, that is for sure. Made some nice change but glad I bailed on that last year and now have a nice person who takes good care of the place long-term. Less $$ during the busy times and more during the slow so it evens out.
There are a lot of people gonna lose their shirts on it though as that fellow points out!
Oh, and Bronze! For the Pacific Northwest!

I mainly go shopping at southeast Asian stores nowadays (Chines/Korean etc). >90% wear masks. And then I go by Walmart where only 10% have them.
Sad to say, you need a friend with connections in mainland China to hook you up with a mask.

If you think China doesn’t deserve blame in this fiasco, then you our more clueless than our rudderless government.
msmcmotown says
Dan: The WAPO piece you quote is an OPINION piece by a columnist, and not a hard news story. Furthermore, it is far more circumspect than is your jingoistic piece about the origin story. In fact, it largely debunks the bio-weapons leak theory that you continue to pose as a viable possibility. Even the neo-facist Tom Cotton has changed his tune on this.
Dan says
I didn’t post it as fact, i labeled it conspiracy theory. But nobody will tell you today that it’s ruled out as a possibility.
The point of these posts is to generate healthy debate among readers. There’s no reason it should be protected from discussion via boycott.
msmcmotown says
Actually, Ignatius does reporting, opinion pieces, and analysis pieces for the post, and often appears on cable news shows to offer opinions. The article referred to is more of an analysis than an opinion piece. There have been several other hard news stories in the Post, and the NYT, which detail how there simply is no evidence to support the bio-weapons conspiracy theory.
Dan says
There’s also no evidence that it came from the wet market or that bats were sold in the wet market that time of year. We have theories, but that’s all we have for now.
Point is, i don’t find the possibility outlandish, even if it is within the realm of conspiracy.
There’s a reason you don’t find WashPo analysis on whether the US actually carried out the 9/11 attacks…

Don’t forget about Judith Miller and the NY Times. That closed loop between her, Darth Vader and I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby enabled a war with Iraq. There’s a reason why you didn’t read about made up stories involving mobile weapon labs, Curveball and centrifuges in the Guardian.

@DML: I agree with everything you said 🙂
@Sam: That camera is great, wow. Has Rams ever typed a future call here. On hindsight, everyone is a winner 🙂
@Carl: Agreed on Airbnb. I had another article showing how so many properties in London were already converted to long term leases which had a dramatic effect on lowering the rent amounts! And this is happening everywhere…Everything depends on how long it takes to get over this health and now economic crisis. I am hopeful…
@ABC: I think it is time for me to work on my connections in Asia to get us some masks 🙂
@Dan: You went all out on conspiracy and very anti Chinese stuff right off the bat. I just thought it was a bit much. We are used to your pro Jewish posts and come to expect them…It’s like me leading with a anti pro Orthodox “opinion” on how they don’t listen to all this social distancing stuff. Have you ever done any heavy anti Trump pieces at all like I do here? It’s like you are tailoring your posts so you do not alienate your readers 🙂 I don’t give a phuck about alienating anyone here because I don’t run a business and I actually enjoy beating up on the Trumpists 🙂 Not sure what to make of the WashPo/911 last line…
Love your Sunday news post but this one just left a sour taste for some reason, that’s all. Please no more conspiracy shit, we get enough online of this shit, we don’t need yet another one to add to the pile!
We are all stressed out trying to live with this viral reality.
May you enjoy lots of clicks. I did get the toilet paper from Amazon because I saw it the minute you posted it and was able to get it through! So yesterday was a good day as toilet paper and rice made into my house, YES!
@msmcmotown: I agree with you 🙂
I am going to miss you guys Wednesdays!

I’m a political centrist, so not sure why I would heavily bash Trump like you do. I voted 3P in 2016 as I couldn’t stomach either side. I’m not blind to the pros and cons of the left and right.
Listening to the beginning of this, it’s more aligned with my thinking, that we’re being led by fools on both sides and may G-d help us all get through this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wf0_nMaQ6tA
I did have plenty of Trump criticism, when I felt it was warranted, in the very same roundup in regards to his neutering of the mask recommendation, not taking steps to close our borders as other countries successfully have, not issuing a stay at home order, etc.
Seems like you didn’t get that far down because I mentioned a WashPo analysis piece and you went full blown #CancelCulture. Sad!
TBBTheDude says
Dude,
This was your main headline: “Shifting Origin Story, Billionaires Doing Good, Plague Of Wild Animals, Trapped Away From Home, Chicken Soup For The Soul+More”
Shifting…plague…Setting the tone:
First subheading: Obvious News Is Obvious: China Lied, People Died; But Does It Go Much Deeper Than That?
Oh boy…
“US intelligence has concluded that China lied about the number of COVID-19 cases and deaths that it had.” – Where was the phucking US intelligence to warn us that this phucking virus was serious and should not have been blown off…and this is the main reason so many died and so many people ARE DYING EVERY FREAKING DAY here huh? Stop falling for the “intelligence” to find someone to blame to deflect the obvious inexcusable insane phucking criminally awful way our government has handled this FIRST!
You then go on finding and linking to a whole bunch of articles from “well sourced” sources, seriously? The Hill, Hoover Institution, the NY Post and many others…come on man!
“Will countries hold China accountable?”
Will YOU hold our govt accountable? We had the first case here as they did in South Korea? What did China have to do with how WE responded huh? Please save us all the anti Chinese crap for another day when you withhold almost all criticism for our own govt, WTF!
Next subheading: China Made A Holocaust Comparison When Israel Closed Their Borders, Now China Has Closed Their Own Borders
I guess we are not going to find from you how our own govt has been lashing out against China…
I got far down and saw something about masks and I guess I missed the criticism for our own…if I could find it buried among non alarming context in that subheading.
I am a centrist too, I vote the lesser of the two evils. Not sure what 3P is but I did vote for Hillary because, well, Trump…I guess it is not going to just magically disappear.
I just thought the balance in your Sunday post was WAY one sided. That’s all.
Enjoy your week.
I despise the Chinese govt and their figures are probably low. I think it is the same here, sadly….I mean, how many tests have we done yet? But China gave us the genetic sequence of this virus in record time and shown us (of course very late!) what it takes to attack the problem (strick lockdown)….and here we have Governors still debating about it and a whole bunch of religious zealots still doing what God tells them to and hurting other human beings in the process…
Ok, I need to get back to my invoicing project, it was not a good quarter, ouch!
Dan says
Not going to refute point by point, but obvious things being obvious, the plague of wild animals was one of the 10 plagues in Egypt. It was taken by my readers on a lighter note (along with the comic included in that section), not setting the tone at all.
Passover is this week where we’ll recount those plagues in depth and it will be the first Seder we have ever had without family.

msmcmotown says
Dan: you don’t do yourself any favors by failing to more clearly specify which bad actors within China you take issue with. Instead, you consistently issue a blanket condemnation of “China,” as if all Chinese are a monolithic other in lockstep. Nothing wrong with criticizing specific actions taken by “leaders of the Chinese Communist Part in Wuhan”, or the “Central Committee under Xi “, or any specific leader or institution. But it’s not helpful to broadly make all of China, or America, or Jews, or Blacks, or Gypsies, complicit in actions or thoughts of specific leaders. I know that I would not want all Christians to be condemned for the actions taken by Jerry Falwell Jr and the religious institutions he leads.

TBBTheDude says
>>>>>>>>There’s no question that this is a massive government failure.
Well, you buried this in a comment way down….But if you read the whole post you would hardly come out with that conclusion. Instead it was all…
Shifting Origin Story…Plague Of Wild Animals – Better click bait than Gary Leff!
US intelligence has concluded that China lied – If they could only conclude that it was the real thing and not just the flu
something that many of us suspected all along. – it is a Communist party afterall, come on!
Unfortunately most of the world relied on China’s data and didn’t prepare for what was coming <—————–LOL
Those markets still operate and they are breeding grounds for animal viruses. – Maybe they are farmer markets selling fresh organic produce? I read they banned the wild animal sales but I guess you are not going to go out of your way to find that link.
Conspiracy theorists have long said that the virus was engineered in Wuhan and/or a Chinese bio-security leak. – Come on man, I am starting to lose my respect for you.
Did China cover up an accidental leak of the novel coronavirus? – Did 911 really happen?
Had the pandemic been properly disclosed and contained, tens of thousands of lives as well as the world economy could have been saved – Are you sure about that? Man, our intelligence must suck then…so why would we believe what they conclude huh?
Based on cremation photos from Wuhan, it appears that tens of thousands died there alone. – Based on our lack of testing, it appears positive cases are severely under counted here and now there are reports of many pneumonia related deaths in Washington way before "one just made it from China". I am sure you will go out of your way to find THAT conspiracy related stuff on da Interne too?
The UK government is furious with China… – LOL…their own Prime Minister "I am not going to stop shaking heads" is now in the hospital…I mean…shm. Obviously, their own intelligence sucks too hey?
This is not China’s finest hour. Will countries hold China accountable? – ALL of the above in your FIRST subheading…Wow, just wow. I guess our finest hour must pale in comparison to China's so I understand the focus…
Lets all move on…we could be here all day.
Still a fan…please be more…fair?

Dan says
I don’t need to defend myself. I felt both options would be equally bad for our country. And I still feel the same way.
Trump is certainly to blame for the mess we’re in, but to say Biden would have been our savior, when he criticized Trump for taking early action to close our borders and has been mumbling incoherently on interviews, is laughable.
And then you have more morons in leadership positions:
https://twitter.com/BilldeBlasio/status/1234648718714036229
Bill says
Jill Stein is an absolute loon and Gary Johnson literally doesn’t understand how the economy works – stating he intended to cut taxes by 25% with no plan to replace that revenue for the government (Spoiler: that’s a recession). So which one was it? But tell me again how you don’t need to defend yourself against some internet comment section. See the cool thing about making ill-informed counterfactual claims is that you actually can never be proven wrong, much like framing conspiracy theories as “just asking questions.”
TBBTheDude says
I need to confess.
A long long time ago…I voted for Nader. Because I thought I was voting and making a statement. I still regret that vote to this day…It is one of the things I regret in my life.
I will never waste a vote ever again going forward.
No Dan…Hillary and Joe or even Pee Wee Herman would be better than this jackass psycho running the country now…COME ON!
And you want to talk incoherence, seriously? Compared to someone who calls himself a stable genius and who says he has a natural ability about, well, everything…I could go on for a very long time, COME ON! At least Joe is humble enough to realize he needs to listen to the experts and have better than judgment at all times than the phucking moron…
Can’t believe this statement: “I felt both options would be equally bad for our country.”
Dan says
I’ve watched several recent Biden interviews. TBH, he looks like someone going senile.
But either way, he ranted about xenophobia when Trump closed the borders to China.
Dr. Fauci said that move saved many lives. Are you not willing to give Trump credit for that? Would we be better off under Joe or were we doomed either way?
I’d say the latter, but that’s just my 2 cents.
TBBTheDude says
So, let me get something straight. You think Joe is going senile and Trump is not? We have had almost 4 years of this psycho and you think Joe is going senile….WTF man!
The ban, really? Again, not so simple. Stop eating the crap you are fed, Jeeeeesus!
https://www.factcheck.org/2020/03/the-facts-on-trumps-travel-restrictions/
Dan says
It would be quite sad if we all thought the same thing. Quite sad indeed. Would be ruinous actually.
I’ve seen the fact check and I’ve seen Biden’s tweet and timing. I disagree with their findings.
Embrace diversity of thought. It’s a very good thing.
ABC says
You can’t make that comparison (Biden vs Trump) because only one person is the president.
I can with great certainty say that Biden listens to the intelligence community. Trump does everything to discredit US intelligence. He seems to believe more in Putin’s word. My expectation is that Biden will put together a competent cabinet. In short Biden is less likely to make grave mistakes.
Fortunately de Blasio is not the governor of NY.
TBBTheDude says
I agree, for the record!

Voting 3rd party is also the safest thing to say you did, from a business perspective. If he says he voted for Trump, he gets hate from the Dems—if he says he voted for Clinton, bigger hate from Repubs.
Clearly, the savvy business/blog owner tries to appear to be neutral these days. Why piss someone off or have him go nuts on you? (We’ve seen what happens in the comments section on this blog in the comments…)
Josh says
Dan, I read the linked post and I thought it was great. You are entitled to your opinion and I was able to set that part aside and appreciate how much work you put in. It really made my day and I loved some of the videos, so thank you.
The third party “wasted vote” hate is ridiculous. No one’s single vote matters in a presidential election. The Electoral College lets most of us vote for whoever we want with absolutely zero repercussions. In most states, the winner is declared a minute after the polls close. Who cares how I vote if I lived in California, Massachusetts, Illinois or New York? The Democrat is always going to win the Presidential vote anyway. Same for Mississippi, Kansas, Alabama, etc. The Republican will always win, so who cares? Vote for who you want to vote for, always.
TBBTheDude says
Not in Michigan…PA, WI, FL, OH too.
No, the Democrat is not always going to win the Presidential vote.
I am of the camp that says you must vote for the lesser of the two evils. And voting for a 3P candidate is a giant waste and a copeout. And many voted for one of them (like Dan) and here is where we are at…
Josh says
Right, but you are proving my point. If you live in a swing state, then your vote “counts” but if you don’t and live in the majority of states, it doesn’t matter. The Democrats could nominate a cardboard box and that box would still win the states I listed above. Same for the Republicans and the deep red states. If you live in Ohio or Florida, great, but most of us do not.
TBBTheDude says
Well, maybe stick with it so your state does not become a swing state? 🙂
Josh says
Ha, don’t worry. In my state, it is so solidly one party that neither party really tries. My state is firmly a cardboard box state. If one party gets 35%, it’s a big deal.
Dan says
Thanks Josh, glad you enjoyed!
It was the first time I voted 3P (to the commenter above, Evan McMullin) and I don’t regret it. I found both candidates to be reprehensible and didn’t think either was fit to be president. That’s still the case today.
If you someone felt there was a lesser of 2 evils, then by all means, opt for that. I didn’t feel smart enough to know who that would be.
TBBTheDude says
Amazing…smh. Even after what we are going through, seriously?
This social media driven trolling pound it pound it pound it repeatedly shit works. I guess Hillary’s emails, Benghazi, the missing server and other shit got to you… and you fell for it. It appears enough fell for it and this is where we are at…remember, it was just one from China…I could go on
Dan says
Nah. She was a shape shifter, willing to say anything to the crowd she was talking to in order to get their vote.
I found it tough to vote for someone that didn’t stand for anything and was willing say whatever it took to get elected.
If you didn’t, good for you. It’s a big free country George, everyone can vote as they see fit and shouldn’t be subject to ridicule for doing so.

So you used your vote to write-in Evan McMillin? Bullshit.
Andy Shuman says
George, I am anything BUT a conspiracy theorist, and I do consider myself a centrist-leaning liberal. But claiming that China (NOT Chinese people, god forbid!) is NOT responsible for this crisis AND the most serious world outbreaks in the last 60 years doesn’t make any sense. I don’t share Dan’s and WaPo’s theories, but China DID lie repeatedly; their wet markets are and for decades have been a major worldwide hazard, and to top it f****** up they’ve reopened them yet again like nothing happened! Seriously, mind-boggling to me.
Anon says
I agree with Andy. For me, the Chinese government is responsible for allowing this mess to start (food markets or more sinister theories).
The Chinese people are also responsible for continuing to eat anything and everything that moves: you can’t defend the practices that result in the harvesting of endangered species.
And Trump is responsible for ignoring all the scientific advice and focusing instead on the politics. Blood on his hands.
Dan says
Agree with Andy and Anon. Well said.
The question of whether it was from the wet market (likely) or a lab accident (unlikely, but surely not outside the realm of possibility) is a moot point. China (the country, as if that has to be said) needs to be held responsible.
And the Trump administration will be held responsible for its blunders and denials as well. November is around the corner.
Happy Passover Andy!
Andy Shuman says
Thank you and same to you Dan!
TBBTheDude says
Andy, Anon (come on add a name!) and Dan:
The “wet market” topic is a lot deeper than what we can discuss in a comment. And certainly pounding on it while letting others off the hook by not preparing us is really sad. My whole point was that Dan was WAY anti China than how our own government prepared us. PERIOD!!!
I will have a really educational article on Friday. I am not posting on Wednesday because not many click on my links like Dan’s. I certainly do not have any pro Trump fans clicking on my links LOL.
China DID lie repeatedly—–Dude, we have the US President lie in pretty much every other word out of his mouth!
Were we held responsible for swine flu? AIDS? That fucking monkey that caused Ebola…who was responsible for that? Shit happens…and so are viruses. We should have been prepared. When your doc client’s wife cries how scared she is when he works non stop with PPE supplies that are totally inadequate…I can sense her disgust towards the lack of leadership and non-preparedness in our own govt…not about a wet market that supposedly this whole thing started. Or maybe it was a Chinese lab. Or, as the Chinese are not going to take that conspiracy social media driven trolling shit lying down…instead, they are now claiming it was a US military led “accidental” release to bring them down…I did not see Dan find and post that conspiracy link 🙂
The questions is: How will the blogsphere deal with these unimaginable changes. Looks like Frugal Travel Guy ran out of gas, RIP FTG.
The Masked Poster says
Hey, Andy, you haven’t posted anything on your blog since Dec.11; have you also retired?
Andy Shuman says
I thought I did but no. 🙂 Back soon.

TravelBloggerBuzz says
Oh man…I want to rewind back to 2020.
Oh wait, that means FTG was still posting, shit!
ABC says
You can probably buy that domain name for a few shekels. Sadly Ingy lost his blogging gigs at FTG and PointChaser around the same time. You should let him post here biweekly. How much time do you think MMS has left?
Sam says
The real suckers in the sale of the Frugal Travel Guy were the buyers. The only assets it had were the existing readers (with no moat, a factor I bet Dan knows), and Ingy’s spunky, daily hunt for an edge.
ABC says
They probably made good money the first few years. And now they’ll write it off as a $1M loss. Unless they are hibernating until thing go back to “normal” (makes no sense since they could just recycle old stories like MMS and TPG).
Among all the “dead” blogs, this one still has some brand recognition.
Dan says
I’d wager they took a loss on it.
These zombie blogs seem poorly managed and rudderless when the founder leaves.
TBBTheDude says
I doubt Internet Brands lost on the transaction. They did have a nice ride…riding cc conversions for a while after they bought it. And it’s not like they really invested much in it after the acquisition.
You should have taken the offer to sell man 🙂 I wonder how many blogs had a chance to sell big and they did not take it…I know I didn’t LOL.
I still can not believe you placed Hillary and Donald in the same pot…even after all the completely insane shit we have been suffering through with him…you will like my Friday post…or maybe not #warning:)
I haven’t had any resumes from TPG staffers yet, you? 🙂
Dan says
I am not a Trump fan, but your TDS is showing. The economy was doing great until this hit, some of our best quarters ever of late and that’s the same for most companies.
Trump’s response to Covid has been poor, though he made some good moves that I’m not convinced others would have made.
Your insistence that everyone agree with your outlook and your disbelief when they don’t is beyond absurd. As i said above, you need to embrace diversity of thought.
Anon says
“Economy doing great”….sure, with all that deficit spending, who’s not doing great? Each family in the USA could be “doing great” if we could borrow like mad and just pass our debts to the next generation.
George is generally good at promoting diversity of thought, the opposite of which is censorship. (He has done that a couple of times, but only with the extremely obnoxious.) Probably less than you, Dan, when someone mentions a shopping portal on your site! LOL
The main reason he keeps picking on you is that he likes all the comments. 🙂
Dan says
Have debt ratios changed over the past 2 decades?
Either way, there’s no reason to go off the rails when someone is a Trump or Hillary fan or doesn’t like either
Too many people won’t speak to their families because they can’t tolerate others not thinking like them.
It’s unhealthy.
Anon says
Debt per capita in the USA up 18% since Trump’s inauguration.
Anyways, the Republican party I once identified with was about shrinking the deficit, not growing it.
I keep a strict budget and the government should too.
TBBTheDude says
The economy was doing great….especially for all of us in the upper income tax brackets!
>>>>>>Trump’s response to Covid has been poor…
I think it has been colossally disastrous…to put it very mildly. And yes I do not understand how others can not even comprehend something so blatantly obvious. How far have we all gone down the pit omg! I expected that from guys like Rams or Ingy…but not you! And that saddens me man.
Regarding diversity of thought: Hmm, okay. I even offered to some MU dude to write a post about his support of gun ideology…still waiting.
You went bat shit crazy (pun intended) on the Chinese while giving our own administration a mostly free pass with praises about how “they shut the flights” from China down a lot more praise than it was warranted. I thought this was a bit much so as the certified blog buzz editor I called you out for it.
Je suis TBBuzzzzzzzz
You did not respond to my TPG related pointy questions…how long do you think they can go on like this?
@Anon: I do 🙂
Dan says
I’d say the response is a 3/10 so far. You can say it’s a 1, that’s fine, no reason to think less of your fellow over that.
I gave him an F on the DDF poll, where the grades are amazingly all over the place: https://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=114792.0
That’s not to say he’s done nothing right.
Do you not applaud Trump in hindsight over the China closure? Do you think Biden or Clinton would have done that or would they have shied away from such measures over fears of being labeled xenophobic?
I called Trump out for plenty and I’m sure there will be more, but if you’re just going to point out the good or just assume everything he does is bad, that’s the sign of a fool.
As for TPG, Layoffs are coming, without a doubt. But the business will survive just fine and will rebound. I wouldn’t pretend to know when that will be though.
I was surprised you didn’t do a deeper dive into the BI article or give it its own post. I’d say they’re very lucky that BI hid the article behind a paywall or else it very likely would have gone viral with potential devastating consequences.
TBBTheDude says
US and South Korea had the first Covid-19 case on the same day, January 20.
Since then:

Dan: the response is a 3/10 so far.
Come on man!
You say I say it is 1. Wrong! I say it is a FLAT 0!
You can call it TDS…Whateveh.
I was going to do a separate post about the BI TPG article with my commentary…but I ran out of time….I AM trying hard to spend less time here…it is insane for me to keep blogging here after all these years…you make more in a day than I do a whole year I am sure….Soooo, I thought it was unecessary and I am fine with my decision.

I have enough material for two posts…By the time Friday rolls around, I should have three. I miss posting on Wednesdays but with just once cc conversion this month it appears a luxury at this point….
Did I say missing Wednesday posts? Oh, I did…
Latest Covid-19 numbers:
USA 400,549 cases and 12.857 deaths
S. Korea: 10,304 cases and 200 deaths
Both countries had the first case on Jan 20.
Dan: “Trump’s response to Covid has been poor” and rates it 3/10. As numbers diverge horrifically let’s see if that 3 rating goes…up? smh
Josh says
I am sure we all miss Wednesday posts.
Dan says
Yup, totally fair to compare the US not to Europe, but to a country where everyone has to wear a mask (CDC blunder, not Trump blunder), that has already faced previous recent outbreaks, and where they track cell phones and send out regional amber alerts of the exact locations where someone who tested positive has been.
Could be in our future, but it will be challenged in the courts.
https://amp.theatlantic.com/amp/article/609577/
The US response has been poor as has most countries in the west, but I’m amazed that that statement sets you off. You also haven’t responded about what you originally thought about the China ban or whether other politicians would have done that.
DiaperDan says
TBB, as you are in charge of blogger buzz on the internet, where is Drew? Where is the Rapid Travel Chai?
ABC says
Yes, please compare to the largest democratic country in Europe, Germany.
They developed the WHO approved test. Much lower death rates. Meanwhile the CDC developed a faulty test. Idiotic. Yes, the CDC needs to be reorganized. I put a lot of blame on the CDC. But guess what, it’s reflective of Trumps leadership style. Nobody dares speaking up because they are afraid of losing their job. And that’s why the head of CDC, Robert R. Redfield has been remarkably quiet. Fauci is 79 so I don’t think he gives a f. at this point.
Ultimately the buck stops with Trump. And because of this, public health responses should be run in an apolitical manner outside the traditional governmental structure.
TBBTheDude says
What, it is not fair, seriously???
Ok, so we have as of now:
USA 404,156 cases with 12,988 dead
Spain 146,690 cases with 14,555 dead
Italy 135,586 cases with 17,127 dead (waiting on today’s numbers)
Germany 019,329 cases with 2,096 dead
France 109,069 cases with 10,328 dead
Greece 1,884 cases with 83 dead
I am going to spare pasting here again all the inane Trump statements about the flu that just did not magically disappear and how everything was under control and how the 15 cases were going to zero, okay?
At what point does your 3 out of 10 rating go down I wonder? At 1 million cases? 25,000 dead?
“The US response has been poor as has most countries in the west”…No dude, our response has been so phucking disastrous is SHOCKING! And we are not at the peak yet! But please you are free to come back here and lower your rating to 2 out of 10 LOL.
On the minor issue that takes away from the main issue (how unprepared we were…which is the MAIN issue) about the ban and Biden again, here are the facts:
https://www.factcheck.org/2020/04/trump-biden-spin-china-travel-restrictions/
It concludes: “That contradicts the narratives of both Trump and Biden.”
I have already queued up that Atlantic article for Friday.
Drew works in IT at Red Ventures (which owns The Points Guy) last I heard.
RTC does a lot of video/podcasts in travel related groups online.
TBBTheDude says
Germany should be 109,329 cases my bad

flyernick says
So many comments. It’s almost as good as a Wednesday post. But sorry, Dan, your back and forth isn’t as entertaining as Ingy’s.
For the record:
I give Trump a 1 on Covid response, but I can tolerate someone else giving a 3. I think the China flight ban was appropriate and don’t actually remember reading much against it and factcheck.org backs me up on that. But most of the credit for containment within the US goes to the state governor’s who’ve had the courage to act. Trump can’t do anything but blame others (Obama) about his/our own unpreparedness, when Trump has had 3 years and taken only counterproductive actions like disbanding the pandemic response team and underfunding CDC. Now in reaction mode, Trump is leading from the rear and poorly: a) Jared’s “The stockpile is ours, not yours” comment. b)Trump losing it when questioned by the reporter about his own HHS’s report summarizing hospitals’ frustrations. Looking for someone to blame/discredity/fire who dared print facts. The WHO is now his latest scapegoat. c) continued narcissism and lies “I’m number one on facebook”, “my briefings [about a national emergency/catastrophe] have the best ratings”.
I’m proud to admit I voted 3rd party once in my life — John Anderson in 1980, a choice I stand behind.
Dan says
Trump’s denials were no doubt horrific. No way to justify them.
But i have medical friends who were equally in denial of what was coming and that boggled my mind. I cancelled a CX flight from JFK-YVR in early February due to covid and they thought i was nuts.
I’m hesitant to blame the myriad CDC screwups on Trump and that’s why he gets a 3 (so far, that can change) and not a 1. Do you honestly think those don’t happen under another administration?
flyernick says
Dan wrote, “Do you honestly think those don’t happen under another administration?” and farther above, “Would we be better off under Joe or were we doomed either way?”
And I agree with “doomed either way”, yes, partially because of our culture (see above comparisons with S. Korea), some degree of “doom”/spread was going to happen. But what I don’t see from Trump is any leadership. Another example: A couple weeks back when the (NBC?) reporter asked Trump what he’d say to the people who were afraid. Man! I thought that was the most obvious softball question to a politician ever — just really providing an opportunity for whatever speech making they wanted. But instead of running with that, apparently because the question mentioned “fear”, Trump instead attacked the reporter.
Dan says
Agree with all of that.
Brenton says
And imagine where we’d be without Fauci.
TBBTheDude says
>>>>>>>>Do you honestly think those don’t happen under another administration?
NO, not THAT amazingly bad!!!
The only experts up there in these horrific campaign rallies, sorry, I meant to say press conferences are Birx and Fauci…the rest are a bunch of bozos. You should take a look how the Greek government handled it and you will be amazed (and shocked, I was). Prime Minister took early action, only spoke to the nation once, he has a Yale educated Health Ministry guy give a report at 6 pm daily with another Health Ministry guy…cold hard facts, humble, humility and EXPERT ADVICE….And, please sit down, the Greeks (notorious for NOT following laws and rules with a rebellious streak…you know, like the Italians lol) actually LISTENED! Amazing what difference actual LEADERSHIP skills can do huh?
The phucking moron is surrounded by yes men who all compete to shovel praise on him…it is just a totally inane incompetent shit show.
You have young kids. How do you like them looking up and seeing this guy as President man? It is just super sad…and it was fun and games as the economy and Dow Jones hummed along just fine. Now it has turned upside down, blood is on his hands and…
never mind. But please come back when you feel your rating has changed lol.
I miss Ingy the most Flyernick…Let’s try this: I think he may not have sold so soon 🙂 —waiting—hoping—-hecomesback
HalfTruthDan says
What I really don’t like about Dan’s blogsite is the half truths. Lately he has been posting a bunch of Amazon wipes and sanitizers and soaps that people are looking for these days and he has this little teaser on everything: “These items have been sold out due to Coronavirus.” (the implication is that these items are useful in the fight against the virus otherwise why even mention it? … And, besides, how the hell does he know why it’s sold out?)
So a person wrote a message and called him out on it:
Leslie —
baby/flushable wipes are not effective disinfectants, especially in disinfecting coronavirus. Please be clear with your readers. Thank you.
REPLYApril 8, 2020 12:06 pm
Dan
Who implied or would think otherwise?
Typical Dan.
Dan says
Are you serious man? What rock are you living under?
Everyone knows that you can’t find essentials on store shelves due to coronavirus effects, whether they are hoarding, supply chain disruptions, etc.
Amazon has said explicitly that due to coronavirus there are massive shortages, shipping delays, and that they are delaying non-essentials by a month to try to get essentials to people. They have also paused all 3rd paty non-essential fulfillment and have paused their own shipping services.
Or do you think you can’t find TP and wipes on store shelves or Amazon for a month now because of some other unrelated reason?
HalfTruthDan says
Nice attempt at a dodge. Why don’t you re-read my post, think about it a bit, and then answer the pertinent point??
Dan says
All I see is poor reading comprehension, sorry.
Do you also think that toilet paper will prevent coronavirus just because coronavirus has caused TP shortages?
Dan says
George, I see you bought toilet paper from a DD link, that said it has been sold out due to coronavirus:
https://travelbloggerbuzz.com/91-divoc-pandemic-economics-elite-status-extensions-the-new-commute/#comment-418100
I hope you know that in fact, toilet paper won’t stop the spread of coronavirus!

Sam says
Dan-
So you’re saying toilet paper won’t wipe out the virus?
Dan says
Try wrapping several layers of TP and baby wipes around your head.
HalfTruthIsBadAsALie says
Poor you: so full of bluster and retort that you can’t see what wrong things you do. You want to defend and fight. Why not try to be more a more understanding man?
The example that you missed: one of your readers pointed out that you are promoting Amazon products that *seem* to be good to fight the virus and that you actually insinuate as such (“they have been sold out DUE TO the virus”). But the reader says that they don’t actually help because they are not anti-bacterial. This is just one post of many that you have been pushing that are sort of virus related, but not really useful.
Rather than change your “sales tactic” or add a disclaimer, you push back on your reader. Why not spend the time to understand the point being made, instead of being the “smart guy” and answering like you are blameless.

3. I’ve been thinking about President Trump touting hydroxychloroquine, the decades-old drug used for malaria, but untested for Covid19. Maybe we should try some other treatments used in the past.
For example, how about bloodletting?
https://www.artofmanliness.com/articles/the-potential-benefits-of-bloodletting-yes-bloodletting/
We could do a pretty quick test here. Just take 400 or so patients on ventilators, draw a pint or two of blood from each one, then compare the outcomes to a similar sized group with no blood drawn.
And how come no one mentions pig urine? A half gallon in the morning, then again in the evening, might be just the trick.
