Preikestolen, Norway….I am coming to get you baby! |
ON MY MIND
Ok, big news! I booked my trip to London on Virgin Atlantic and then burned 9k BA Avios points & $45 to Stavanger SVG Norway. Yes Preikestolen I am coming for you! It is a gift to myself for finishing yet another tax season, departing April 17th! This of course assumes I survive until then, help me God! Hope the weather is fine by then! I still need to book RT flights Detroit to NY JFK, 3 nights in Stavanger and 1 night at/near Heathrow. Any suggestions are very welcome!
Today is my last day as a Delta Platinum. I just received my Silver elite (always hated Medallion, it is not the Olympics!) packet. It is time to start kicking the Elite addiction. I am ready for free agency!
MILES/POINTS
Register your Delta account at Starwood for Crossover Rewards. I am linking the Starwood website to do this as I don’t trust Delta’s;-)
There is high anticipation with the Friday launch of First2Board. Rumors are running rampant that Mr. Pickles will be joining? There was a vote and the envelope was handed to the Academy and all us crazy miles addicts are anticipating the revelation of the decision. Plus, mega giveaways are coming too!
The Flyer Talk thread “What is the most useful frequent flyer blog” was closed by the moderator. And I was not responsible! I absolutely despise these North Korea like moves from above! Maybe I should spend more time in Milepoint:-) Speaking of North Korea, Dennis Rodman is visiting it now!
TRAVEL
Great article by USA Today “Will fares rise on American/US Airways? Bet on it!” Oh I so agree!
The Wisteria Flower Tunnel at Kawachi Fuji Garden. From Twisted Sifter. Looks very psychedelic to me!
Ten Days in Thailand. From Gadling. What a gorgeous video. Better to play at Vimeo!

Ran out of time…again!

Personally I would have gone to Norway in June-Aug period. Can be somewhat rainy and gray. Bring a lot of money. This is Switzerland deluxe. Visit Bergen, take Hurtigruten.

June 15 to August 15 is a blackout period for the Virgin Atlantic prize I won to London! I know I am taking a risk by going so early, I hope the weather does not mess me up!

Heathrow – Hilton T4 and Sofitel T5 are the only hotels connected to the airport. All others require the shuttle bus which is airport run and which visits all the hotels on a loop.
Cheapest option is probably one of the Holiday Inn’s on the Friends & Family rate.
If you are coming into London at all, you’ll get better quality options downtown. The T5 Sofitel is very nice but priced accordingly.

Thanks! Looks like I have several options to choose from. I am always looking for the best bang for my hotel points. Hilton points are obviously up front to burn now. This may be a good blog post for you to compare Heathrow overnight hotel options;-) If you have done such a post, please provide a link. Thanks again.

TPG: “If you already have the Sapphire Preferred or know about it’s benefits, you can skip this post. However, if you’re looking to get in on one of the best all-around travel rewards credit cards then feel free to read on.”
Love it!!
At least he SAYS “I’m going to regurgitate everything I’ve written about 20x before with the weak excuse that my 7% annual bonus – which was promised – posted exactly the way it was expected to. So if that’s not cool, ignore this post. But if it’s NEW TO YOU just like summer re-runs you’ve already seen, then please click my link. Cha-ching!”
Except he doesn’t even say THAT since, as always, there’s no disclosure.
TravelBlogger Buzz says
I JUST saw that headline in my Googe Reader & started shaking my head thinking exactly what you…were writing here:-)

Problem is, the Chase cards aren’t churnable. So if you’re not someone who can click his affiliate links, he doesn’t really care about creating content for you, so just skip the post

He does seem to be putting a boatload of spend on his Sapphire though – an annual dividend of 20K?! That is insane! Wonder how much his blogging gig is helping him clear if he can afford to put ~300K of spend on one card (in addition to his many other cards).
TravelBlogger Buzz says
If you knew, you would start your own blog and fill it up with affiliate links:-)

The fun part is how “THE POINTS GUY” has his friends reimburse him for meals so he can accrue all the points instead of letting them have their share of the points game. Unless that the line was just to make it look like he doesn’t really own all the spend on the card 😉

I am no fan of Mr.Pickles. I follow him on Twitter and on EVERY trip he takes, he complains to the hotel/airline about some minor issue and ends up getting complimentary stuff as a result. Not to mention the way in which he abused Costco’s return policies by buying hundreds of thousands worth of diamond rings and returning them. Over-entitled sleazeball.
PatMike says
Odd that you are “no fan” yet “follow him on Twitter”. You must feel that his “tweets”(note the pun) are valuable to you, therefore you must be a “fan”. Hmmmmm…
TravelBlogger Buzz says
He is one of a kind. Tends to fall in either camp “love him or hate him”. I am in the first camp. I may not agree with all he does but I sure find it entertaining and educational.

Garys stating to pick up the CC pimping pace too now. Sad to see
Today’s Chase Freedom post hyped it as “chase Freedom updates 2nd quarter bonus”, but only 1 small footnote in the post actually has to do with the title…. the rest of the post is just pimping Chase cards, including non-Freedom cards
That makes 3 of the last 4 days where we were bombarded with links from him
