The insanely slow road to building a blog (and why most people give up) by The Next Web. HT to Personal Finance Digest. Wow, does this strike a chord or what!
I managed to book our trip to Dallas from NYC over the holidays. Going there on Southwest (after transferring enough points from Chase Ultimate Rewards), Mrs. TBB returning to NYC by wiping out son’s Delta Skyshit account and me paying $96.60 on United to Detroit via Houston which will probably be wiped out by Arrival points (found it with ITA Matrix). Avios were non existent during this week. AA and UA miles had no saver levels, I thought I was looking at Skymiles lol! I now need to book a hotel and I am leaning toward the Fairmont which is pretty cheap at only $140 per night and we may save our two free nights for another Fairmont property. Or split the nights in two with the Fairmont and either the Westin Galleria at 10k SPG points per night or the Grand Hyatt DFW at 12k Gold Passport points per night. So many variables come into play, the cash rates, the fact I have a lot more SPG points than Hyatt, the suite upgrade possibilities (guaranteed at Fairmont), have an early flight out of DFW so the Hyatt would be more convenient for at least the final night, the Westin is inside a mall, etc etc. I have time to settle on it. Any feedback on the hotels above please let me know.
I am now at 932,544 miles/points burned in 2015…so getting a second year in a row burning more than 1 million is a virtual certainty at this point. #highfive

Son is off to college…less than 3 miles down the street at the University of Michigan. We moved him into his West Quad dorm room. And we ate for free at the cafeteria (which is ridiculous after what we paid for tuition/housing/meal plan/fees/wow). So I may pump some more before the Winter UofM bill comes due all right? ๐

First! I like these morning posts.

Why Dallas for Christmas?
Eric says
The Dallas Fairmont is nice, but what you want to do should dictate where you want to do. I can say that the Dallas Fairmont is close to a lot of Dallas’ best food if you’re into that.

I schedule the posts to be published at 6.30 am. But that feature is more of a miss than a hit with WordPress as I frequently get a “Missed schedule” note…why?
Visiting Dallas to see wife’s high school friend who visited us last year so it is payback time. And why not? Kids will be skiing in New Jersey and it is time to get away from them for a change lol.
Great feedback on the Fairmont! Definitely leaning towards it Not that it means much but the Grand Hyatt DFW is rated #1 hotel of all Dallas hotels at Trip Advisor and its pics look awesome. But with not much Chase UR points coming down in the new Chase Bank reality…I think I will save them.

Hey George, any particular reason why you chose 6:30am? I thought it was better to have posts go up after 4pm USA time to be near the top of the Feedly when people get home from work.
I had the same problem with missed scheduled posts, then I got the plug in – WP Missed Schedule and everything works perfectly now! There have been times that I have over a month’s scheduled posts queued up when I am off on an adventure! I try to be as unplugged as possible and live in nature when bird watching. But no one ever notices I am gone since a post still appears every day! But I don’t think you could get away with it to that extent as your whole blog is more current-event based whereas I can always post bird profiles and destination stuff that isn’t time sensitive.

I went with 6.30 am after asking around on Twitter one late night two weeks ago. It appeared that was the best based on the feedback. And it gives me a short window to add any late breaking night news too!
WP Missed Schedule sounds good. Not sure why WP can’t get that thing straight and we need yet another plugin!

I live in the DFW area. Will you rent a car? What are you coming to do? There’s not much to do near the airport. It’s just suburbs so I wouldn’t stay at the Hyatt unless you were going to spend most of your time in Ft Worth / Stockyards area. The GH is by far the closest to that stuff.
I had a CLE at the Westin Galleria recently. Standard Westin. I liked it. The Galleria is great if your into shopping. If not, then it’s just a big mall with an ice rink. It’s pretty during the holidays. lots of places to eat. My favorite is the cafe in Nordstrom. It’s pretty far north of Downtown and besides shopping there’s not much to do in the area. Traffic can be a b#*~h too.
I stayed at the Fairmont when I took the bar. I really enjoyed it. It was quite and room service was great. Of course I was only 25 at the time and it was the late ’90’s. I stayed there because the location is convenient to Dallas proper. If you’re coming to sightsee Dallas this is by far the best location. However I would still recommend seeing the stockyards in FW.
Good luck!

I may rent a car for a day. Sightseeing, eating, hanging out mostly. Fairmont sounds better and better, thank you!

Strike a chord…that’s what you are reminded of. I think.

Sorry for me to correct…I know English is not your native tongue and you are an excellent writer that’s fun to read…
Especially I regret it because it was the day you write about cutting the cord to your son…I know that feeling all too well…

Here in PDX one of the local rags put out an issue of wine pairings – but not meal or dessert pairings – marijuana pairings. Definitely Portlandia material.
Happy Labor Day Weekend, all! I’m staying home but my son is flying in, so I am most content. Now he went to the other UM – University of Miami!

Buzz, great pic of your kid with the proud parents.
Here’s the next challenge, and let us first clarify it is the gift card aspect of the $200 travel incidentals etc. that seems to be having the issues ? But the latest reddit thing you linked to say some other legit expenses aren’t posting either.
The challenge is, how else could you best get that $200 back ?
Great post about that Did you try it, those dang noobs, sometimes don’t you just want to take them out behind the shed and give them a good whooping ?

But I hear what you are saying and I fully support you in that.

So the Amex 200$ incidental credit is working as it should? Only the ‘workaround’ is not?
Than say that please.

Hey, what do you think this is, MMS? ๐
Mike says
Oh Anon 3 spots up that was me.
MMS, let’s see, no can’t guess it but probably on blogs you hate, and thank you for those lists. Wait, million mile secrets ? ? ?
I do see why you rate travel is free so highly, that guy is super smart in terms of his ability to organize, analyze, and present large amounts of information.
I saw another great article, maybe you linked to it, about the different levels of forums, all the way up to top secret where people were trading there new discoveries and so forth. It was enlightening for me. So I get where you are coming from.
Very well then, carry on.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I don’t hate anyone, anything, never. I just ignore and yes MMS is on the Ignore list.
