Is Anyone Actually Saving Money by Travel Hacking? Some great observations here. A big part of this game for me is the thrill of the hunt and scoring! As life has evolved, it has also evolved from a focus on saving money to the maximization of life experiences minimizing actual travel costs while not hurting the experience quality too much. No doubt having a higher net worth and no debt allows you freedom to do whatever you want. It allows you to do things and FU (not the card) stuff hehe.

The Mai Tais author lost my sympathy/interest months ago when she got into a back-and-forth about being rude on an airplane. I don’t remember the details, but she didn’t come out of it looking like the adult in the situation.

United’s flight to Houston from Chicago had a mega delay. Had to get a different plane, then pilot started blaming weather.
Currently in route. Phones busy. Twitter team looks at own Flight Status that has WRONG information. I told them to look at Flight Aware like me 🙂

All ended well. His next flight was also delayed enough to make it! He never sprinted as fast before in his life. Spending the week at friend’s timeshare, he had to pay for some of it. If he had listened to me, it would have been freeeeeeeeeeeee!

The generally unspoken truth about travel hacking is that the richer you are, the more you save. The effort to reward ratio if you are low on cash is weaker.
For example, our Dubai holiday at Easter would have cost £25,000 had we not got the flights and suites on points. Here’s the thing – I could have paid that, and may well do so this October if Jumeirah does not open the reward nights I want. Knock off the taxes I paid and the cash equivalent of the Amex points used for the hotel and I genuinely saved £17,000.
Even if you did the same itinerary as me but would usually have flown Y and stayed off-beach for 80% less money, your cash saving is minimal and probably even negative, albeit you flew in more comfort and got a far better hotel.
But… do you have a house in the Hamptons yet?
The mathematical truth is: greater theoretical spend => greater imaginary savings.
It’s hard to save 50p on a pound compared to half of a Million.
That’s the truth about the world.

I read recently that over 1,000 businesses in Puerto Vallarta have closed in the last year or so. The cartel thugs come and demand extortion money, and the people just say that’s it, and close up shop.
