Too funny… |
ON MY MIND
Holy mother of God! Sweet Jesus! A churning challenge in Frugal Travel Guy without any credit card affiliate links??? Did this really just happen? Am I hallucinating? Somebody please confirm in the comments that I am not going crazy:-)
Sometimes I wonder how many prewritten blog posts full of affiliate links have been queued up. Must be such a b*tch having to go back in and edit the posts to add Virgin Atlantic as a new Chase Ultimate Rewards partner. Life is tough.
In order to keep it all together I am finding myself I no longer spend much time on twitter, sorry folks! This blogging thing has become a monster. I can’t wait to escape to Norway next week. I have a series of posts queued up debuting my own affiliate links. I just typed this up to piss off the reader who keeps complaining I always make this joke. I do:-)

If you wanted yet another example how this hobby has gone to credit card hell pimping insanity, just see this blog post “Best Credit Cards for Soccer Moms“. Wow, what next? Best credit cards for the incarcerated (5x for cigarettes and booze)? Best credit cards for real pimps (10x at strip clubs). WTF!
I would like to challenge myself to go one post without mentioning affiliate links:-)

What are you complaining about with the Soccer Mom blog post? MommyPoints made a career pimping to that crowd.
Dia (The Deal Mommy) says
As someone who also “pimps to that crowd”, my problem with that post is that it clearly wasn’t written by someone with a family! (For one thing, no “Soccer Mom” I know wants to be called one.) The cards mentioned are ok, but miss some Two categories most families spend a LOT on: restaurants and drugstores (IE Walmart/Target) They don’t categorize as “grocery”, but often categorize as “drugstore” and will catch the bonus. I’m maxing out my Citi Thank You 5x unlimited for a year and using Chase Sapphire Pref. at restaurants for 2x.

The post was featured NOT for its advice, which, as you state, it is not that good! I featured it to show to what extent some bloggers will go to find another “angle” to make a blog post only to…you know what:-)

TBB, okay here is a burning question that I have…has to do with referral links. If you follow Dan’s Deals, he has a bunch of posts from time to time about deals for shoes and things on Amazon. Computers are another big one. He also has some groupon posts and kosher-ish things. Do any of these garner him commissions? (I tried to ask a while back but he censors his comments and, if you ask on his blog, you get a bunch of nonsense answers.)
Does anyone know if he is making money pushing any of these things?
Anonymous says
Even small-time bloggers are Amazon affiliates, and get a cut of any purchases you make when you go through their links. It was a big stink re: First2Board’s use of Amazon’s affiliate program, if I recall correctly.
In any case, deleting comments and nonsense responses are not very cool.
If you’d like to support the Sierra Club instead of your favorite blogger for your Amazon purchases, might I suggest http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/20142034-post111.html That was a discussion of what to do once the Hawaiian portal shut down.
Don’t know about non-Amazon.

Amazon pays roughly 6%. Just google amazon associates. I use it to support a large hiking forum. I encourage people to use ebates or fatwallet in the limited categories where they can get cash back, otherwise use the amazon link to support the site. BTW, don’t get me going on the Sierra Club. Very misguided advocacy stances. I’d say support bloggers who don’t push affiliate links in their posts. For example, here is FrequentMiler’s amazon link:

I am the last person to ask these questions bluecat! I have not taken the time to look into this murky area much at all as I am too busy trying to keep up with everything in my life AND try to produce a quality blog product here! If I was in it for the dough I would have focused on that solely you know;-)
I think certainly some are affiliate links and some are not at dansdeals. Some really tend to be pretty good deals, regardless of the commission paid! Of course this way PALES to comparison with a credit card app score!
Dan reads me here and sometimes he comments providing clarification. Dan?

Thanks, folks. I always sensed that he was pushing that stuff not out of the goodness of his heart. I would like to see disclosure there too but at least know I know that those are just “advertisements”. I should have known better!
TravelBlogger Buzz says
There is so much of that going on in the internet. No goodness of heart, it’s paying da bills:-) Thank God, for me at least, my other job pays the bills just fine…Just need to get this baby down in such a way that it does not take so much of my time. I am working on it…

For some reason replying isn’t working from my mobile so I’ll just post here. Dansdeals has had a lot of his comments on his site getting flagged as spam recently, so you may want to try again. http://forums.dansdeals.com/index.php?topic=27398.0
Being a reader there and an active forum poster, I know that Dan will always post the best deals whether it has an affiliate link or not. As it is his full time job, I and other readers feel perfectly fine clicking on his amazon links for deals that would have been posted anyways. You should know that most of the deals come from the forums so whatever is brought up on the site isn’t just posted to milk the readers.
Dan is also open about affiliate links for credit cards which he openly states that he would appreciate the support if you feel that he has helped you.
I personally find many of his credit card posts to be very informative and very well written. He does have posts written to get the affiliate $, but he tries his best to make his post as balanced and informative as possible. He will tell you all the bad things too. He was a blogger years before the affiliate links were around; the fact that they are around now just means that he can continue without finding himself a different job.
Also, he clearly marks his paid posts with a disclosure on top “Please note: This is a paid advertisement which is stickied as the top post, please scroll down for new posts.”
Overall, after getting to know him a bit, I think he is a good knowledgeable guy that would like his business to be helping people get the best deals.
