Let’s go on a shorter ride through all the Avios devaluation insanity and recent blog post frenzy, I ask for feedback on how to manage this baby and where to go from here and end with how I was touched by the photographs of fallen war photojournalists.

AVIOS INSANITY! ARE WE ALL DELUSIONAL OR WHAT?
I watched the craziness unfold late last night and there were even more blog posts about it all day Monday of course. It was hilarious to watch that SO many bloggers had to drop everything to just say something about this to ensure in their own mind and to their readers what experts they really are. Ok, that was a joke actually. Please allow me to laugh all over myself! Ok, let’s continue then. It also shows the complete schizophrenic behavior that this blogging can unleash to people. Look, devaluations are a fact of life. If you were planning a trip with Avios you may look into booking it just to protect yourself. If not, please go on with your life. It is not the end of the world. And these Iberian people can be really weird, especially running airlines lol. I think the best read was by DansDeals with Breathe Easy Folks, The Reports Of The Death Of British Airways Avios Have Been Greatly Exaggerated
LONG POSTS OR SHORT POSTS? IN LONG POSTS, WHAT SECTIONS DO YOU LIKE OR DISLIKE? I NEED FEEDBACK ON MY BLOG! NEXT STAGE IS WIDE OPEN
Do you like very long Buzz posts like this last masterpiece? British Airways Avios devaluation coming?, Wonsan North Korea, Baghdad Iraq, Sochi, best personal finance links, Pulitzer photos, Last True Hermit, Awesome Blog Buzz! with the five sections clearly marked: Miles/Points, Travel, Personal Finance, Oddz & Endz, Blog Buzz? They take a lot of time! And the formatting sometimes drives me mad in WordPress!
Or do you like shorter posts like this one with me unleashing my thoughts with no rhyme, all mixed up, just like Free Form radio? For the best free form radio in the galaxy by the way I listen to WCBN FM Ann Arbor, the student run radio station of the University of Michigan because it is awesome!
I think I am going to do my best to take this baby to early November and manage to complete 2 full years of an incredible ride. I will then pull an Online Travel Review like exit or get serious with it to justify the time I spend on it. I may add credit cards for my household, friends and family and devoted readers who keep emailing me and stick them in a tab and not pump, basically continue what I am doing. At the first sign of bullshit from the banks or “affiliate managers”, knowing myself, I will tell them to stick it and then exit gracefully the stage in a mega rant for the ages πΒ It is becoming clear to me that I just can not continue this frenetic TBB pace with so much going on in my life. This was started as a joke and it has become, well, kind of an obsession!Β To all who are using the Amazon link thank you so much. It is not the money, it is the realization of you going out of your way to thank me for the content you see here that has hopefully enhanced your quality for life in some way. And that’s the way it should be! But its’ not, hey life is not fair. We keep going!
I am not like One Mile at a Time who has already decided what to do before he posts some type of question to his readers. I am clearly wide open here! I needed this additional challenge in my life because I was getting a little bored with my real job. Or I need to find some extra jolt in it. I completely suck in marketing since birth so pumping credit cards like some of these guys is clearly not in the horizon. Don’t get me wrong, I feel very proud of my blog, this is my baby. I guess I am the luckiest guy in the world dealing with my two passions: personal finance and miles/points stuff. Can I continue to be an expert on both and do it to my high quality standards? I don’t know but it sure is so damn hard! I have never been accused of not working hard if I set my mind on doing something. Or maybe I need a life coach or something. Or a new therapist. Or I finally get a call from Greece that my mother had a health episode and this is it for TBB. And this will happen one day…
I guess I need to figure out what to do when I grow up…The therapist is right, it is good to let it all out π
Any feedback appreciated. If you are going to insult me, do it respectfully and colorfully. At the very minimum, please make some arguments backing up what you are saying!
The future is like a box of chocolates. And I can’t eat them, boo!

My first suggestion is to quit reading so many blogs. There’s absolutely no reason to waste your time, for instance, reading each and every post from the usual suspects. Maybe a boilerplate rant tab encompassing a summary of the blogs you don’t read and why you don’t read them, and a daily pointer to that page/tab?
Second suggestion is to go FM, and just post a set number of days a week. Yes, blogging school teaches to post lots. But not necessary in your case.
Third suggestion is a card page/tab. I, as I’m sure others do, look at FT for the latest & greatest apps, then decide who (if anyone!) I should “tip” by using their link (as long as they have the best offer). I’d like to tip you, George (though I prefer to call you by your keyboard name “Buzz), because I’m entertained by your site and feel you do/have done a public service by educating folks about conversions.
Fourth, I’m a firm believer in down time. Today’s business world fails to recognize the value of a rested employee at their own peril (or loss of productivity/profit). Take a week off when you need it. Heck, take four if you need it! Let readers know when you’ll be back, and come back refreshed and happy. Maybe with interesting stories π
Good Luck, but please don’t go away unless you feel you absolutely have to.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
Interesting suggestion: “boilerplate rant tab encompassing a summary of the blogs you donβt read and why you donβt read them, and a daily pointer to that page/tab?”
I will never post more than once a day. I actually feel I should post when I have something to offer and just can not mail it in or make posts with pics of other in planes or hotels or bucketing myself etc.
Been thinking about the card/page tab. I feel I am cheating my readers by spending all the time on this subject and not on what the site really stands for…blog reviewing…Just got to find the harmony.
I definitely can use more down time, no doubt. The number one thing that bothers me about blogging is I have less time to earn and, most importantly, BURN my miles/points stash. And that really really hurts…
Thank you again.

My advice to you, George, is this:
If you enjoy β truly enjoy β writing TravelBloggerBuzz, then find the time to continue it in a way that fits into your schedule.
I do have an idea: why not involve your children in TravelBloggerBuzz where they find the cool photographs and other wholesome material; while you solely write about the continual state of miles, points, travel and financial weblogs? That may free up some of your time; teach your children some additional responsibility; further foster their wanting to travel β and they may have fun in the process…
…and β dare I say this β that could actually improve TravelBloggerBuzz?
You can involve your wife, too. This will allow you to post new βepisodesβ of this weblog without cutting into family time.
The idea just came to me; so take it with a grain of salt β but perhaps it will lead to an even better idea for you.
By the way, I thought of you when I saw this…
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
Yep, just got to fit it into my schedule better. Which can really vary you know. And then you get a flood of blog posts about, you know, the coming Avios devaluations lol.
Been trying to get son involved but he just shows no interest and he is too busy screwing around with his girlfriend. My daughter is obsessed with dance and other girly activities. Interesting suggestion about involving my wife who actually prefers to execute orders “use this card at the mall next!” than getting more involved. I will ask her just to see her reaction.
Yeah, tourism in Greece has been the only bright spot lately…
Thank you again.
Elenor says
” you solely write about the continual state of miles, points, travel and financial weblogs”
OMG! Poor George will have to off himself within a week of that! A steady diet of garbage will poison his brain!
I would suggest picking just TWO of your … less-than-optimal … blogs a week and skimming them to report on. You don’t need to cover the WHOLE internet, just a wee part of the part you’ve already established your bona fides in! Maybe a random number generator to pick two blogs a week for you to comment on — clear out your feedly list — and just keep a list of URLs for the generator to send you to!
Then you can continue finding the weird, wild, educational, and interesting stuff that draws me back here! I barely even skim the “bad blogs” report. Been here long enough, seen enough, to know that if I do decide to get another card, I’ll do a lot of careful research! And expand the money stuff, it’s useful!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Hmm, interesting feedback, thank you.
Two blog posts to hammer…but the competition will be so fierce lol.
Struggling with the personal finance material. I mean, it does not go along with the “Travel Blogger Buzz” theme at all…so just limiting to picking the very best I pump out from the other twitter account π
I think the “bad blogs” report fits in very well with the entertainment aspect of my blog….I have been told anyways, it sure is with me lol.
Thanks for the suggestions, I appreciate it.
P.S. No templates of any kind were used in the transmission of this comment!
William Charles says
I prefer the more structured posts. I’m not sure why you don’t have adsense on your site, but with the traffic numbers you’ve posted before you’d be raking in enough money to justify the time invested.
I know that you don’t like linking to pumping blogs, even if they do write a good post but it’d be good if you included the post title on your blog (that way they don’t get any SEO juice but your readers still get to read the useful content). If you’re not going to do that, just delete the blogs you dislike as there isn’t really a lot of point in following them.
Best of luck with whatever you decide to do. Do what makes you happy though, not what your readers want.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
Tried adsense, got banned because I suspect a few fans clickbombed me to show me their “love”.
Yeah, the Blog Buzz section can use some rethinking…But I can’t resist myself. Maybe I just like being anti commercial or it’s just too entertaining and I also want to catch any newbies to make them realize what they are dealing with because, well, they don’t know and no one is as insane as me making enemies instead of doing, well, interviews π
William Charles says
I’m sure somebody (or one of the companies) I work with has a contact with adsense. I’d be more than happy to put you in touch with somebody who might be able to get you unbanned.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Thanks for the offer.
I appealed it only to be told “you are out and our decision is final”. I have no doubt the same thing will happen again. We are talking peanuts anyway. So easy to click bomb. Screw google ads!

You do what you gotta do to maintain sanity, whether it is cutting down on blog length, or discontinuing altogether. We will hate it, but will understand. I don’t see why you can’t have a mix of long posts/rants and short ones, and why you can’t have some blog vacation time when you feel you need it. Maybe Ramsey will do some guest posts for you!
I do not have a problem with you going the affiliate link route, or monetizing the site in any way (as long as you’re honest about it, which I’m sure you will be–you’ve definitely established your credibility at this point).
Of course all of us readers will be devastated if you decide to fold, but do you think that you will be all right with giving up something that you have put so much time, and heart and soul into? What will replace this creative outlet?

I think I may do shorter posts in the future. I just do not want to be accused of mailing it in because it is not my style π
Waiting for the Saverocity dude to show me da money to join them but he said he is broke for getting Nick of Personal Finance Digest in the fold. And word is over in the Boarding Area advertising revenue may be way down so why bother be one of the 100 blogs? Determined to go it alone until…something happens and trying to find the harmony while at it π
Thank you again.

I truly look forward to reading all of your posts when I see them pop up on my Feedly. Every time I shop on Amazon, I click through your site, I know it doesn’t pay you enough, but I hope you get at least a free 6pack here or there.
I hope you keep on publishing. If it seems too much, maybe a weekly post would be enough? That will probably drive your traffic down, so short daily posts may need to stay. Honestly, I don’t know how you find to post these and keep up with theChive!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
Thanks for the six packs!
I do not anticipate folding this baby for good. But going out & just keeping it for a once week blog rant may be a solution if I can’t find the proper balance…It’s a work in progress indeed. And maybe the beauty of it all trying to figure it all out π
Thank you again.
Kumar says
Allow me to criticize you for a change, George. Hope you take it in the right spirit. This is how i would advice a friend. Well, i was just happy to see that this site is now just 9 short of 3k readers and you are talking of folding up, George. It is not even equivalent to euthanizing a growing kid. It is just plain killing. 2 years is not big in this space. One should be talking of growth and not of folding up at this stage. If you need a break, then it is fine. You can always take a break and come back. Or if you need more time between posts, you can do that. Have three posts weekly or something like that. I think you just need to adjust your lifestyle a bit in order to ensure that your baby survives. We all have adjusted ourselves well when we first became fathers and then adjusted again and again as they kept growing, as our parents grew older, as our wisdom grows, as we grow in our understanding so on and so forth. However, this baby seems to be an adopted child for which you are not ready to adjust yourself. That is not fair, George. You entertain so many people with this blog. And you want to stop all that? Look at Saverocity. They keep growing. I love Matt’s fighting spirit. He keeps growing by coming up with new ideas like Forum where he is actively participating and manages a blog, got a new kid and is able to take care of other activities as well. Even for me, doing full time job, managing my family, doing MSing, reading so many articles (useless or otherwise), doing certifications, investing, travelling, helping others etc takes most of my time. However, i still want to grow. There are so many other things that i havent ventured and i know i have the space within me to do that. One has to grow within the space within themselves and achieve more and more. Quitting is easy. Finding more space to grow is not. The choice is yours, George. I can continue on and on but hope you got my thought process. Looking forward to a happy ending.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
It would be much better if you told me “your blog sucks, give it up man” π
Yeah, I am not a quitter…It does keep me from MSing, and most importantly burning, so…it is a process trying to figure it all out. I come from a professional high touch personal background and transforming this into an online medium has been very illuminating indeed. Talk about growth…I learned so much in less than 2 years it has been eye opening! Yeah, we are all on a journey to try to figure it all out.
I can’t say that for my “Gasping for Air” soccer team last night when we were taken to the cleaners by Gulo-Gulo. It is supposed to be an over 40 league and these guys brought in a bunch of 20 year olds that made us gasp to death! Need to find a way to succeed there. But hey it keeps me fit π
Thank you again.

Kalimera George,
You must do what makes you happy and what changes can you do that will make you happy to continue your blog. You my friend are a breath of fresh air in the stagnant atmosphere of the mainstream bloggers. Get tabs to click on and without pimping you can perhaps monetize the blog a little. I would use your links without hesitation. Maybe have some of your readers contribute guest posts, trip reviews, etc. You can make it work.

The common man says
The DiffPaul guy makes a lot of sense IMO. Found myself agreeing with everything he said (and had wanted to write feedback pretty much along the same lines).
Please do not push yourself to post every day or couple of days like the big blogs…I think you have a somewhat different niche and there is plenty of action in the comments to keep everyone entertained, so posting a couple/few times a week should work fine, I think. We want to make sure this doesnt become a burden for you as it gives a bunch of us a whole lot of pleasure (and entertainment).
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
TBB is primarily about entertainment, hope that never changes π
Chris says
Get some like-minded people to help write for your blog. I don’t mean ghost writing, but just have multiple contributors (like they do very well on Hack my Trip). Then you could spend more time with your family and write maybe one or to of your own posts per week.
And yeah, you really need to find a way to make money. I hope you can find a way to make the credit card thing work so we can use your links. We’d be making a statement by using your links!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
If this was primarily about making money it would not be pissing off so much the big time mainstream bloggers π
Having “multiple contributors” will, in my opinion, dilute the TBB brand π And I am such a control freak I would have a hard time dealing with them lol. I think Ramsey with his FA stories would fit in for a post #hint
F/A Ramsey says
Thanks for the #hint Buzz, I would be happy if you just posted pictures and Gif’s. But You know I love reading your blog, but your family comes first………..As for F/A stories, I have a million of them stored somewhere in my ganja clouded brain, just have to remember them. Stories of sex at 39,000 feet, things people do and say to get moved up to F/C or for free miles, extreme strange behavior on board, Celebrity encounters, wacky layovers and things behind the scene you do not know about when you fly. Suggestion: do a hybrid where you post the miles/points and travel/pictures sections on a regular basis and the other sections on a rotating basis? Maybe it also has a side benefit of making you appear less angry? (On the other hand, possibly it could give you more time to develop a full-on rant, LOL).
Seriously, I would recommend that you emulate the approach of Frequent Miler. He doesn’t always post every day, but when he does it is usually good content that I find relevant. He has links to various resources and “how-tos”, as well as affiliate links that allow me to drop a tip in the bucket when I have a need.
What I enjoy about TBB: 1) your summary of the current topics generating “chatter” in the miles/points blogosphere. Occasionally you highlight an interesting story that I’ve missed. 2) the interesting travel photos and some of the non-miles/points blogs that you have mentioned. More than one of your suggestions has made it into my Feedly. 3) of course, the commentary/critiques of the miles/points bloggers that frequently generate some interesting comments which are fun to read. 4) your humor/sarcasm. Those 4 points keep TBB solidly on my “must read” list.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
Very interesting suggestion on the hybrid. This Blog Buzz section today is shaping up to make me…extremely angry. My therapist says to let it all out but the anger does not subside. It does temporarily until it shoots up again. Case in point Lucky using Disney to go on an incredibly cc sale spree, eeeeeek.
I think Frequent Miler posts every day (maybe take a day off in the weekends I think). And he never places affiliate links in the body of the posts which I find it amazingly honorable by itself. He is certainly an outlier. But let’s watch what happens if advertising revenue becomes less in Boarding Area, it appears all the advertising revenue is under pressure in the whole industry.
Thanks for telling me the 4 things you enjoy, very helpful. The humor/sarcasm is organic, no preservatives π
Thank you again.

As far as the blog goes, analytics helps you decide which content is better. Which posts get the most shares, links, comments, views, etc… Then keep doing that.
As for what you do when you grow up, again, it would be interesting to know how much it’s grown in the last year. And then think about how you can grow more, who can expand your audience too. Because if it’s monetization, and without large credit cards, you need a super sized audience.
And as far as the Avios thing. Wow.
Wow!!!!
That’s what’s wrong with blogs, iterative journalism. Copy and paste what he wrote and then add another exclamation and/or detail. Embarrassing. Absolutely no changes and no one double checked. BA didn’t say anything about a deval, there was no reason to believe they would change.
Gary seemed to say that it’s Iberia’s fault when google cache says nothing has changed. And MV typically falsely predicting the future at least owned up to it and said my-bad.
Keeping you busy I guess.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I really appreciate the feedback. Thanks for taking the time.
I have not visited my google analytics page in many months. I get lost in there. I can certainly use a Google Analytics for Dummies lesson!
Monetization without credit cards is becoming an exercise in futility, this is becoming apparent every day. If I was doing this full time maybe I had a shot. Thank God the day job pays very well so no rush from me. Trying to manage it all and keep enjoying this. I certainly do not want to put money first because, well, it then becomes a real job and I labored enough in the corporate world for 7 years and hit my limit.
Yeah, the Avios thing was just an incredible example of the crap overflowing this quirky space. Wow indeed! I have more to day about in the Blog Buzz section tonight. Many may seem I am angry and I would not disagree with such assessment π
Busy is a state of mind when it is your passion π
Thank you again.

Ramsey, never thought I would see Sivaji Ganesan in your avatar! You continue to amaze! Whats the story behind the avatar if I may ask?
Ramsey says
Common Man, thank you for giving me an update on my Gravatar. I had no idea who he is or where I found the picture. But I liked the picture. Now I have to google Sivaji G.
Ramsey says
Apparently it is from the Movie, Karnan. Karnan is a 1964 Indian Tamil mythological epic film produced and directed by B. R. Panthulu. It features Sivaji Ganesan as the eponymous character, while N. T. Rama Rao, S. A. Asokan, R. Muthuraman, Devika, Savithri and M. V.
The common man says
Epic is indeed the right word! I never fail to be (pleasantly) surprised by the TBB Comments section!

You had better check our good friend Miles Professor’s recent post. She went above and beyond her usual uselessness today.
She recommends a certain card to pay for a deal and the concludes with this little gem “although there isn’t enough time to sign up for this card to pay for the deal.” Ok great thanks glad you didn’t forget the affiliate link!
Does she actually have real followers or do people just subscribe to see what ridiculousness she will post next?
Want to play guess the card she’s spamming? This would actually make for a really good blog series (but if you use the idea I will call my legal council to claim 10% of your Amazon rev).
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Wow…missed that one because I never expected the Arrival card to be thrown in there at the end!

Wow, you’re seriously obsessed with TMP! Maybe I’m missing something, but I can’t find the post.
In other news, Gary with his new shiny Amex links posts that two cards are about to expire even though there’s still 2 weeks for the Delta card. Care to “guess the card” which link he put front and center the United card? I’ll give you a hint… it’s not the one with $50.

This may be late to the party, but I always enjoy your links to ACTUAL travel blogs. If not for you I may not have ever experienced Yomadic (my favorite traveler), Twisted Sifter, or Matador Network, just to name a few.
I love when you juxtapose these actual travel bloggers to the “travel bloggers” that just post about Lufthansa first class (lucky), complaints about the TSA (you know who), and bullshit marketing and templates (there’s a few).
Seriously, how many of the visitors to these blogs actually give a shit about these issues?
Keep doing what your doing. Even when I don’t agree I still walk away entertained and usually glad that I have experienced another opinion.
Thank you for everything, if not for what you have done here I may have given up on points, miles, and “travel hacking” a long time ago.

I really appreciate you reading my feedback. Thanks for taking the time. Random thoughts:
Keep TBB! I’m not worried about this one, you can’t quit if you want to.
Post as often as you want, without any pressure to keep a set schedule or format.
Get Barclays links, put them on ‘support TBB’ page, don’t talk about them. People who want to support you will.
I can’t get my Amazon link to work, so I bought some stuff for Shaun’s birthday through yours.
Joining a network could make the tech side easier and give you a few extra adsense dollars.

Last! The benefit of which is that I can crib from others!! The comments from Erik and Sequoia are spot on.
George–is your issue too much time or too little money?

Too much time is issue #1. Working on it. Killed about 200 blogs already. Will kill the bulk of the Blog Buzz section as they just keep coming, will reserve special treatment on the ones that made me REALLY bang my head on the wall the hardest π
The no money is okay. When I ponder about the time spent on this and associate with the money that comes with it sure assures me I must be insane. But the non monetary rewards and the (false?) feeling of making a difference and doing a little to improve this space makes up for it.
Thank you.
