Breaking up is hard to do. Another sad story of breaking up with your favorite bank.
The Points Guy will be giving a TEDTalk about miles and points. My reaction and some of yours. I am still shaking my head, even TEDTalks has been devalued!
Really good analysis of the hotel landscape and how Priceline and Expedia are to blame for the latest consolidation wave. Sadly, it is not going to stop. i am guessing both Club Carlson and Hyatt will be merged out of existence as well this year. Warning: I have been wrong before!
Skrunda-1: Exploring A Soviet Ghost Town in the Forests of Latvia. The Bohemian Blog goes inside this town, good stuff. Sold for 240,000 euros in 2010 and bought back for 12,000, so sell low and buy lower Latvian style I guess ๐
Very educational post: Birth Control Methods for Women Who Travel.
The best ramen shops in America. You know I like ramen. The one in Ann Arbor is really good!
The view from the 3rd tallest building in Shenzhen. You can fast forward to the 2 minute mark, wow!
The most outrageous hotel amenities.ย In-room bartenders, running concierges, surf butlers, fairy grandmothers (no thanks!), and my favorite…a personal submarine!
Americans can’t help themselves from borrowing more on credit cards. Read it and weep! This is why I always felt selling credit cards to everyone without REAL cautions (as in: this hobby is NOT for the vast majority of you, go away!) is just awful practice because it is like giving crack to a crack addict. Full disclosure: I have never done crack! And I am not talking about burying a line such as “your credit is your most important asset” somewhere and then proceed to sell plastic in whorish ways non stop…Ok, I better stop now.
Amazing photos of men withdrawing cash in different countries. Must click. Which one is your favorite? #1 is in Russia, a little too much vodka!
And I leave you with this…

TPG giving a TED Talk is a real cause to reconsider the value of any other TED Talks you may have found impressive over the years. FYI, a friend of a friend worked at the TED Institute or whatever and apparently it’s hilariously incompetent, hierarchical, sexist etc. etc. Of course it would mean more coming from a gruntled employee, but nevertheless, as you would expect!
Nick @ Personal Finance Digest says
If you’ve never seen them, the Onion Ted Talks parodies are hilarious, as is David Cross’s “Shangy” skit from his new show.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I think I saw one of those TED Talks parodies, hilarious indeed!
Yeah, unbelievable…I lost all respect for this event!

Aside from the craziness that is TPG speaking at a TED conference… what on earth is TPG thinking? As if “the hobby” (hang on, I just barfed) needs any more exposure. Is he trying to run himself out of work? The Titans must be getting desperate.
Scott says
He’s thinking more exposure to the masses = more money. Titans can only exist if more newbies continue to enter the hobby.
projectx says
I get all of that, but does he not see the cause and effect of this? He’s already raking it in… the more that get into it the more likely that avenues will close, which means all the masses that he exposed to this won’t be able to get enough clicks to sustain his current revenue stream.
ABC says
It’s a business. If you’re focus on quarterly results you can’t worry too much about the next quarter. The Hobby can be gone in one year.
Kenny says
He doesn’t work for himself anymore. If Bankrate says go, he’s got to go.
Helmholtz says
If you’re going to kill the cow, you may as well squeeze its udders while you’re doing it.

Must be a slow day for the TPG site/crew. How many people really visit his site for economy reviews in the first place – and on Egyptair?? I have flown on those Egyptair planes, definitely not great in economy and not really a review-worthy ride.
ABC says
The Hobby is on life support for all but the Titans.

An old Titan once said:
“This is all about conversions”.
Rest means nothing.
These guys keep selling and aiming for conversions. Every freaking day. 24/7 365

TED talk is the usual hipster garbage, and ironic pic of ATM with creepy old White dude with Thai ‘Ladies’ or ‘Lady boys’.
Also screw the banks and go credit union.

TPG should include in his TED talk a thanks to Ingy, who took card churning onto Nightline. Then sold his blog a little while later.
