Another TBB post featuring the most eclectic links around the web such as the business travel woes, the most remote bars, hideous celebrity crypto shilling, all the bank transfer partners, countries are opening and we have entered the acceptance phase of the pandemic, “technical” analysis in investing, a bizarre tale involving scammers starting a ballet school, all about boosters and tests, how it is tripping on psychedelic substances, why the Afghan army did not fight, farmland in the US and all the languages out there, book Hyatt properties now with your points, more on shutdowns and we catch up on some personal news. Thanks to the two monthly Paypal donors and the two readers who got the 100k Chase Sapphire Preferred card with my links (sadly, the 100k offer is dead unless you are visiting a Chase bank branch).

TRAVEL
The theme today may well just be that we are entering the acceptance phase of the pandemic…
As I just said: U.S. to Reopen Canada, Mexico Land Crossings for Vaccinated Travelers.
This is an excellent illustrated guide about how important business travel is for the airlines: Why airlines need business travel to return. Yes, some of it is coming back. No, a big part of it is likely never coming back so adjust accordingly and be prepared for higher airfare going forward…eventually.
Another site to keep track of the changes in the pandemic travel rules around the world: When Will International Travel Resume? A Country-by-Country Guide to Reopening Borders.
Beer in these places anyone? Planes, Trains and Yaks: Five of the World’s Most Remote Bars. An Irish pub at Mount Everest and a totally hipster type “bar” somewhere in Sweden just south of the Arctic circle, oh my!
PERSONAL FINANCE
I personally feel that investors using charts (or, technical “analysis” to make it sound more sophisticated) is a bunch of malarkey. But if it works for them, you know, it is a free country I guess. Anyway, this is pretty good “Reading Tea Leaves“.
The obvious question: If technical analysis doesn’t work, why do so many folks still use it? I think there are three key reasons.
First, we’re hardwired to search for patterns—an instinct we inherited from our hunter-gatherer ancestors—and technical analysis appeals to that instinct
Second, we hunger for a sense of control.
Third, for investments that don’t kick off a stream of income and never will—and hence there’s no way to calculate a fundamental value—technical analysis is all that’s left. Holders of stuff like bitcoin and gold are stuck looking at their charts and asking, “Is there any reason to imagine the price will rise, so I can unload this turkey at a profit to some greater fool?”
Sometimes, when I watch TV (which is very rarely these days), a washed up celebrity short of money will appear in an ad to pump some worthless shit. Or even current celebrities will do the same thing because I guess they just can’t say no to more money? It is beyond pathetic imho! And then we get another level of assholes that just could not say no to the latest mania with the juiciest promotion fees…crypto! This article’s headline captures my feelings towards this: Celebrity Crypto Shilling Is a Moral Disaster. Why are the regulators letting all this obvious scam non sense going on is beyond me.
Celebrities are lending their names and promotional talents to everything from NFTs to crypto exchanges to their own custom coin offerings. Together they are communicating something clear but terribly misleading: that cryptocurrencies, and the many shady areas of this gray-market economy, offer a path to sustainable riches. The truth is almost always the opposite. Scams are practically endemic in the crypto world. One recent report estimated losses in DeFi (or decentralized finance, a booming crypto subindustry) at $681 million in the first seven months of this year. That follows billions of dollars in crypto losses in recent years to criminal behavior—hacks, frauds, or “rug pulls,” in which crypto project leaders simply abscond with funds.
Just be careful out there, okay?
This is a bizarre tale full of weird people, “love”, God, Trump, guns, dead bodies, scams and, you know, “real” life: When Doug and Ashley Benefield Started a Ballet Company, It Wasn’t Supposed to End in Death. For a little while I feared my daughter would choose ballet for a career, phew!
The Charleston-based evangelicals had much in common: guns, God, Trump. What went wrong, only one of them could say.
COVID-19
Like I said, we are Entering the Acceptance Phase of the Pandemic. Countries slowly opening up, workers slowly returning to offices, business travel slowly increasing and more…
Another horrific illustration: The Pandemic in the US in 60 Seconds.
This is a great podcast answering questions from people in a simple non scientific manner: Boosters, Tests, and the Holidays: Your COVID Questions Answered.
But…what happens if the virus surprises us again?
ODDZ & ENDZ
The author goes on a psychedelic trip and writes about it, sorry no video. Out There and Back: My Psilocybin Journey into Forgiveness. Maybe this is what I need to take to help me stop blogging here you guys…
Welcome back to this series about psilocybin, my personal journey with plant medicine, and the future of mental health. Last week, I had my first journey with psilocybin and what follows is a detailed trip report.
The authors have been covering Afghanistan for decades. “Why the Afghans Did Not Fight”. Or, to be more precise, How American “help” turned the Afghan army into sitting ducks. Must read to understand what happened imho.
If you are into farms or just plain curious…what a visual! US County Farmland vs Total Land Area.

This section is about my hobby addiction of collecting frequent flyer miles and hotel points since the early 1990’s! Feel free to skip this section and parts of the next one if this is not for you.
Newbies: The big travel rewards credit card signup bonus offers are slowing down, the outlook for this hobby in 2022 does not look good IF the pandemic slows down…Maybe grab what you can get and ALWAYS remember that to WIN playing these games means you NEVER EVER pay a penny of interest to the banks, ALWAYS pay off the full balance on your credit cards.
I think this is a good review of each bank’s currency: Which bank offers the best transfer partners? Personally, I am good with United and Hyatt (and sometimes Southwest) with Chase Bank’s Ultimate Rewards points…Meanwhile, the shift is continuing to increase the annual fees while loading up the premium cards with all kinds of coupon “credits”: American Express Business Platinum New $695 Annual Fee, $400 Dell Credit & More.
If you have plans to book something on Hyatt maybe you should do it soon? Hyatt Peak/Off Peak Pricing (Book Now). The program is way too valuable and it will NOT get more valuable… #hint. Also, do this with AA too, you have been warned.

BLOG BUZZ
We are now entering BLOG BUZZ, a section for advanced hobbyists and veterans of this fast imploding hobby and also a section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life because it helps me feel better about myself.
The big news in this hobby was how a particular bank with a name abbreviated in just four letters went all out on closing cardholder accounts that were opened by a particularly greedy salesman employee. More here: AmEx Shutdowns: New Details and What I’d Do. And more on how to get your money out from that particular bank…
Sometimes I feel like a travel agent for my family. We were set to send my wife and daughter to Honolulu over Thanksgiving but it looks like my son needs to be in Las Vegas and Denver and then from there may start again business travel with first trip going back to New York City. Maybe he can salvage keeping his AAdvantage Pro elite status, very long shot. He could by putting $15k spend on the AAdvantage Platinum Mastercard but we are just not going there, not worth it. I managed to find him a cheap one way non stop Honolulu to Las Vegas flight booked with just 14,799 Southwest points. $25 early bird checkin will be reimbursed by his Amex Platinum. Then I told him to book Spirit to Denver for $22.40, about $60 all-in! He is okay with Spirit, he flew them back in college. We are not elitists around here you guys lol. We need to have a family meeting to talk about Christmas plans…
I have 4,690,402 miles/points in the bank and I have redeemed 767,767 miles/points year to date. I think I am doing fine and it is time to taper… 🙂 I need to figure out 2022 travel goals, I wish all countries were open…
Big weekend with the Detroit Half Marathon on Sunday. I ran 10 miles yesterday and I am supposed to rest today and tomorrow and then, my biggest test yet, I am supposed to run another 8 miles on Saturday, all in preparation for the full marathon in Athens Greece next month. So, on tap for 21.1 miles this weekend, help me God! I am so behind in training and I am going for it…praying to avoid injury. Now if only the 100k Chase Sapphire Preferred card would sponsor me lol.

George I’d suggest you read William O’Neil “how to make money in stocks” before you dish on technical analysis, it’s a tried and true system
TBBTheDude says
Let’s just say we can disagree on “tried and true”. But hey, if it works for you…
DML says
Good morning!
Too much to read right now. Thanks!
TBBTheDude says
Thursday posts are designed to keep you busy through the weekend…
bob says
hello from athens, good thing you aren’t here today it is absolutely pouring!!!!
Went to the stadium where the marathon finishes yesterday, cool place. hope you get to make it there!
TBBTheDude says
yeah, I am seeing some of the pictures, wow. Stay safe ok?
I hope I get to make it too…it is a long shot as of now. I mean, to finish in that stadium that is.
PedroNY says
Thanks for blogging, about to hit another anniversary, keep it up, thank you.
Abe, I hope you are just joking, “technical analysis” is a sham, it has been debunked too many times at this point.
Cheers,
PedroNY

Thanks for reading all these years. One day my blog is going to be discovered and bought for millions of dollars and I am going to share them with my long time readers…and you are on that list.
Ok, nice to dream sometimes lol.
Carl Pietrantonio says
What DML said. Wow! Too much good stuff here today! Thanks as always! Be careful on the training, though I know you need to be ready for Athens. My lady friend is working through some painful PT to get back to running and it is grueling so just make sure to pay attention to whatever your body tells you! I wish you the very best on all of this.
As far as travel, well, this year it was road trips. I am hoping though to get back to international next year. I miss that!
TBBTheDude says
Listening to my body….I am getting better at that. One more injury and I think this is it for running for me…so I am being careful and not push too hard.
We are all ready for the pandemic to end!
flyernick says
That Afghanistan analysis was really disheartening! It’s hard to argue against the original reason for going there, but we really should have been out of there at least 10 years ago.
All the Amex drama almost makes me glad I’ve been in their popup jail basically since it began.
TBBTheDude says
Agreed on Afghanistan.
Your Amex line made me kind of laugh…nervously that is….what a screwed up situation we find ourselves in with Amex 🙂
Nick @ PFD says
This is the best thing I’ve read on the Southwest mess:
https://www.epsilontheory.com/when-narrative-takes-flight/
I haven’t opened a new Amex account in years. Probably a good thing…
TBBTheDude says
Added to the queue, thanks.
If you don’t have an account…you can not get shut down 🙂
Runninggirl52 says
Good luck on Sunday!! I have had 1 too many injuries so I run vicariously through you!
TBBTheDude says
The past year has been a lot more PT sessions dealing with injuries myself but it appears I am stabilizing…if I can get through the next month I would be ecstatic!
Thank you.

I am seeing fancy pics from bloggers being wined and dined in a luxury island next to Necker named Mosquito Island. Assuming all paid for by Bilt. Expect glorious posts soon about the company…
For the record, TBB was not invited. Second, I absolutely hate mosquitos, it is genetics, my mother said her kids have sweet blood or something.
Y’all behave and someone stop the rain, Jeeeeesus!
Bill says
I have been curious who was paying for that trip since it www pretty clear it wasn’t the bloggers.
Thanks for always keeping it real.
TBBFan says
Rumor is that TBB will get the readers who get the most cards with his links to Mosquito Island, wow!
TBBTheDude says
Well, with just 2 100k CSP cards sold this month…it may take a while to get to that level so please be the start of this, thanks!
