Chika’s Story
Mitch Albom is a successful sports columnist and author in the Detroit area. He also runs a charity helping kids in an orphanage in Haiti. This is one of these stories for one of the orphan girls he helped. This is one of the saddest, gut wrenching, inspiring stories I have read. Oh, you will learn about DIPG too. Sorry you guys for depressing the hell out of you today, I just save the best for Sunday’s TBB post. I will make it up on the next link, trust me 🙂 We have a huge drug problem in this country, this is not news of course. And the heroin overdoses are now totally out of control. This is a devastating read on what heroin does. I mean, wrecks. The article starts with an episode during a Little League girls’ game and one player watching both parents being attended to by EMS workers…And everyone knew…These communities need help, not jails…Help the hero volunteers damn it!
At this stage of the American opioid epidemic, many addicts are collapsing in public—in gas stations, in restaurant bathrooms, in the aisles of big-box stores.
Examples of too many devastating overdose incidents follow. The unspeakable silent tragedies endured by family members. And the few heroes who never give up on doing all they can to save the sick.

Compared to other generations, millennials were 214% more likely to search for cosplay, such as people dressed up as characters from video games. They were also into “hentai” (190% more likely), “POV” (136%), “anime” (131%), and “emo” (128%). They weren’t into “long nipples” (75% less likely), and “dogging” (72%). [I am really really concerned about them Millennials lol]

George, Nothing to apologize for with the Addiction Story. As a recovering addict (37 years) and Clinical Director for a Drug Program (DAYTOP Village) we need to get more and more of the story out to people. Especially, in a time when our “President” wants to destroy health care and dismantle addiction services. Most addicts need MEDICAID to help pay for their treatment. I don’t want to live in a world where “I got mine, F*** the next person”. You do yourself and this blog honor by talking about a difficult topic. I coined that phase of “blogs that make me smile” about your blog, now I add “Blogs that have a conscience” to your blog. Thank you!
addiction treatment is expensive stuff. I think everyone is on the same thread of “lets get people the help they need” but if it means doubling everyones insurance pmts its gonna be a huge turnoff to most. Hell they cant get most young people to pay in right now. Not sure how it works if the price tag keeps going up at double digit inflation.
It starts by limiting Pharma’s control over the market. The opiod crisis is a classical example of how sponsoring the right docs can promote the use of oxycodone and opiods.
Stating in medical journals that there was very little risk to become addicted was morally wrong and NOT based on solid science. This type of marketing resulted in general acceptance of opiods in the medical community in the US. In other countries, government agencies had greater control over prescription guidelines and especially making sure that medical doctors can not be bought by pharma companies. In those countries you don’t see an opiod crisis.
I can only hope that Trump delivers on his promises related to the fentanyl and opiod crisis. Unfortunately I did not see anything in NIH’s budget dedicated to this crisis.
It’s sad to see many of the same marketing techniques applied in some South American countries.

I ‘ve lost my dear first cousin to drugs, he was more like my little brother, we grew up together, our families lived next door. 18 years gone by, still hurts as much as it did when I got that phone call. Still boggles the mind this happened to us. Goes to show you the pure devastation and distraction drugs can bring to anyone…I could go on but…need to schedule tomorrow’s post man.
@ Mileage Update: I think it is money well spent. Because the blowback can be more devastating due to crime and medical help. So, the other day, I was at Starbucks and I see manager calling 911 “it happened again”, here comes EMS, they break into bathroom and bring out on stretcher the guy you see at the corner with a sign asking for money for. Totally laid out, overdose I guess or just passed out. Off they go to hospital with sirens blazing…Who pays? I think we do. I could go on but…
@ABC: Great points on pharma and docs! I am not sure they give a shit about this problem, it was all campaign talk, like draining the swamp my ass. But they won’t pull a Duerte…I hope 🙂
I think that most people view addiction as a self created problem. Its really hard to convince ppl to have their insurance rates go up XX% because someone took illegal drugs or abused perscription drugs. Most are ok with chipping in something. In my experience few wanna really dig into the problem and shoulder the resources needed to dent/reduce drug addiction.
I am for single payer, universal heath care like every other developed country in the world. Medicare works great and is probably the one Government that does so. I have taken care of my mother, father, mother’s sister, my aunt and my first wife all deceased now, but had no issues with getting doctor’s care, bills, insurance payments, etc, without worrying about getting referrals
