Here is another post with five Best of Web links I have found worthy to share with you all dealing with a CSF leak and how it can change your life, the Afghanistan Biden betrayal, the lab leak theory behind the origins of the pandemic virus and a rare interview with the Wuhan bat lady scientist, the very long history about the amazing mRNA vaccines and the 2021 Budapest International Photo Awards. Enjoy the weekend reading and see you next week!

A spinal fluid leak derailed my life of travel and food, but taught me to find beauty in the small things
This is the story of Jodi Ettenberg, the founder of the Legal Nomads blog. And how her life changed after a lumbar puncture. In her own eloquent words. You will learn a lot about CSF leaks and other medical stuff and also learn how to be grateful. I am proud to be one of her Patreon supporters because having Jodi improves our world. Support people and causes that make our world better before they quit!
CSF surrounds the brain and spinal cord, and is contained by a connective tissue membrane called the dura mater. A hole or tear in the dura, such as one caused by a lumbar puncture, allows the CSF that cushions those organs to escape. If the hole does not heal, it can lead to a myriad of painful symptoms when a patient is upright, among them the positional head pain that I experienced.
Meet the scientist at the center of the covid lab leak controversy
Must read imho! This is the BEST article by far on the lab leak theory. I have been consistent in what I believe: that Covid-19 probably rose naturally, most likely from bats and we may not find out exactly how for a very long time (if ever). There is a hideous racist and anti China government angle in keeping the lab leak theory alive. The Chinese government certainly has issues and with some actions definitely helped in keeping the lab leak theory alive.
You make up your own mind, read it all please before you go off on me, okay? 🙂
Last thing I want to say: Thanks to all these scientists for doing this work!
Shi Zhengli has spent years at the Wuhan Institute of Virology researching coronaviruses that live in bats. Her work has come under fire as the world tries to understand where covid-19 came from.
The Betrayal
I have been accused for being pro Democrat and pro Biden. So, I am including this article here which is profoundly anti Biden for balance lol.
The debacle in how we left Afghanistan is all on Biden. And it is sad…And the efforts by many outside the government to save so many loyal friends left behind are heroic!
America’s chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan added moral injury to military failure. But a group of soldiers, veterans, and ordinary citizens came together to try to save Afghan lives and salvage some American honor.
Halting Progress and Happy Accidents: How mRNA Vaccines Were Made
Amazing! The vaccines have been a long time coming. Looking back we may find out we got pretty lucky…Hope this becomes a lesson for the next pandemic #developing
Thank you science!
The stunning Covid vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna drew upon long-buried discoveries made in the hopes of ending past epidemics.
2021 Budapest International Photo Awards
These are amazing…
And I leave you with this amazing photograph found HERE.

1, Thank you, T!
2. I read that Betrayal thing a couple days ago and it makes me so very sad and angry both. We let down thousands of allies in Vietnam and now again here. Whether anyone was for or against the war, it should be that the government kept its promises. Who knows how many people there will be or have been killed because they helped us and we did nothing for them? It’s so wrong!
3. Thanks for that vaccine story, too. It just goes to show how some progress takes time until all the pieces come together.
Much appreciated, all of this!

I read the MIT/technologyreview Shi/Covid article. One of the challenges of being a “journalist” and embed yourselves with the a group is that you may feel sympathetic to the members. And Jane Qui, being based in Beijing, can NOT continue to live in China and write a critical piece. Still, the piece is worth reading. And Shi should be expressing herself.
I’m struck by Shi’s naivete. +5M have died from Sars-CoV2 and she’s still out chasing bats in caves 1000 miles away from Wuhan as if nothing has happened. Why actively test the lableak/spill hypothesis by catching more bat poop and bring it back to Wuhan? Leave it in the caves! We know it’s a risk. Take lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi didn’t attack us. Land development brought us to THEM (ticks).
Our only real defense was the vaccine. The only information we need is the spike protein sequence.
“She welcomes a broader societal debate about searching for new viruses in the wild and tampering with their genomes in the lab”. That has and will not happen in totalitarian China. And nobody is forcing her to put the world’s population at risk. Scientists just need to stop sometimes. All scientific questions do not have to be answered. Her lab can do research on something else. Ethics!

Thanks for taking the time to comment, really helps keep this “enterprise” going…
ABC, we disagree on this one. And it really doesn’ t matter in the big picture, it is what it is.

Greetings from the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Pedregal – funded in part from the Amex Hilton Biz from your links, if that gives you any solace.
A breezy 75 degrees sure beats the frozen Midwest right now.

Thanks.
Getting ready my “69 reasons I love the Amex Hilton Biz” card so I can have my first conversion this month….woohoo!

A room goes for 400k-700k/night….. How did you book it?

My links are special 😉

Standard rooms are 120k a night – I used 360k Hilton points and a free night cert. Checking in on the Hilton Calendar view every day for a couple of weeks and I found time that worked for me.
Got a nice upgrade to a junior suite. Who knows if it’s because of Diamond status, special occasion or combination of both.

woo hoo!
I just got the GM card without first checking to see if you had it in your links. Mea culpa.
TBBTheDude says
Had to check…I don’t have the links for it so you are not banned 🙂
It is offered by Goldman Sachs…you never hear much about it….I hope they succeed with it and start competing with the other banks for our benefit!
Nick @ PFD says
Uncapped 4% on all spending, though of course that 4% has to go toward a GM car. But there’s no limit to the amount you can put on a car either.
ABC says
What was your CL? Can you cycle the CL?
Nick @ PFD says
Don’t know about cycling and won’t be finding out… CL was kinda mediocre.
