The World is About to Change Even Faster
I think we are all sensing it. Buckle up…How is what you do protected from them robots kicking you in the dirt huh?
The Wall Street Journal noted it took the landline telephone 75 years to hit 50 million users. Vala Afshar, the “chief digital evangelist” for Salesforce.com Inc., tweeted that it took airplanes 68 years, the automobile 62 years, light bulbs 46 years, and television 22 years to hit the same user milestones.
YouTube, Facebook and Twitter hit that 50-million user mark in four, three and two years, respectively.
Lots of other industries are being disrupted. Consider the combination of genomics and molecular biology, and what this might mean for longevity and the treatment of diseases. We are seeing it in materials science and architecture, in chemistry and energy storage, in fracking technology and the demise of coal. Big data and artificial intelligence are also changing the way the world works.
The man who went on a hike – and never stopped walking
What a story! It starts out like this in the paragraph below and, well, it was so darn interesting I read it all. What drives some people? We are all different my friends…
In his 61st year on this earth, the man who calls himself Nimblewill Nomad left home and walked a very long way through the mountains – about 10 million steps, he estimates, or 4,400 miles. Then, he took another, even longer walk. And then another one. And then another. Soon, he had given away almost all of his money and taken to walking almost year-round, roaming the post-industrial wilderness of North America in what he called “a desperate search for peace”.
Early, Awkward Video of Nirvana Playing in an Empty RadioShack
Wow. So weird watching Nirvana before they hit stardom playing in a…Radioshack of all places #mindblown. I always liked that band, you could feel the raw hurt…
Hanging coffins: China’s mysterious sky graveyards
The things you learn blogging. I could be spending my time learning about SEO, affiliate relationships, kissing the ass of “successful” bloggers and promoting the crap out of my blog. Well, I don’t. I spend time researching to bring you some entertaining, educational and sometimes inspiring stories. And stuff you will not read anywhere else. I try anyway. So, here is something I had never heard of!
10 creatures that can ruin your day at the beach
Since many of you will be spending time at the beach this summer, I want to protect you! If you get bit by or in contact with any of these creatures, this is what you should do! You are welcome!
Here is one of them: Jellyfish
All stings hurt; some can be deadly
The oceans contain thousands of types of jellyfish, ranging from one-millimeter specks to giants with tentacles more than 100 feet long. Stings are common: According to a 2008 National Science Foundation report, about 500,000 people are stung in the Chesapeake Bay every year and another 200,000 in Florida.
Avoid ’em: Keep an eye out for jellyfish in the water, and definitely don’t pick up that colorful, balloonlike thing on the sand — it could be a venomous jellyfish cousin called a Portuguese man-of-war. If you’re stung, rinse with seawater and remove spines with tweezers or the edge of a credit card. Contrary to that “Friends” episode, urinating on a jellyfish sting can make it worse.

Any tried autoslash lately? I used to love it but now it sucks, big time. Bigly.
TBBTheDude says
Not as strong as when it first started. But still worth it imho. I see it more as a time management tool these days, drop my res # in there and go focus on other things. Latest one is about 4-5 changes and $60 in savings. Like last time, most of these changes happened within a week…nada since then.
snoptro says
Doesn’t work that way anymore. See my reply to Sam.
:Sad
Sam says
Why?
snoptro says
It’s no longer automated. It now returns links to Priceline, and you have to manually rebook (and cancel old reservations?) each time it finds you a new lower price – found on Priceline, again.

“Lots of other industries are being disrupted. Consider the combination of genomics and molecular biology, and what this might mean for longevity and the treatment of diseases.”
Not true. The peak impact of molecular biology was in the 80s and 90s with biotech companies like Amgen and Genentech leading the way. Genomics has yet to have an impact on human health with the exception of a few rare diseases.
Google’s effort in the life science space has been a disaster so far. IBM’s effort had been poor as well. Life is more variable than a computer algorithm can tell. Stick to SEO! people renamed Big Data “precision medicine” for a good reason (to get another round of funding).

Thanks for the comment. Maybe, if they keep throwing money at it, they’ll show some progress in the near future?

Bunch of weekly summaries, news we all have heard of, some airfare deals we get directly from sources and just a whole bunch of crap…
