PERSONAL FINANCE
I have been around the wealth management industry for a long time and it never ceases to amaze me how awful people can be with their money. Wall Street keeps coming up with ways to separate gullible people from their money. Assets under management in leveraged ETFs jumped by 51%, to $134 billion, in the 12 months ending Jan. 31….Like this latest ETF product, the leveraged single-stock ETF product. I mean, when you see the word “leveraged” maybe that should be the first clue to avoid them? Billions Flowed Into New Leveraged ETFs Last Year. Now They’re in Free Fall. This is not investing, it is gambling. I guess it goes well with the latest meme stock/coin clusterphuck fest still going strong, when will people learn? Thanks to blog reader Sam for sending this in to TBB headquarters (my home office, not in the basement). Anyway, some sad quotes:
“I’ve been literally sick to my stomach,” wrote one user on a Reddit investing forum who said they bought 200 shares of a leveraged MicroStrategy fund for $200 each on the day the shares peaked in November. On Wednesday, the shares closed at $29.80.
Early investors watched the price of the funds rise by more than 10-fold from September to November, the period in which MicroStrategy shares also soared. The funds have crashed since, and while they are still up since inception, the average investor is down a lot. The two funds have saddled investors with an estimated $1.7 billion in losses since launching seven months ago, according to a Morningstar analysis that takes into account the timing of inflows.“It is like a thresher,” Ptak said. “Money goes in and it doesn’t come out.” [Added bold font for emphasis, as in sad lol]
Many years ago I lost a prospect who said that my investment process was too simple. He probably sent his money to a hedge fund with a sexy trading algorithm lol. I still shake my head about this. Can’t help everyone I guess: 6 Reasons to Avoid Hedge Funds.

This is a really good post that goes over the history of market crashes: Precedent in the unprecedented. And the post ends like this appropriately:
Over the past 70 years, we’ve endured wars, recessions, political turmoil, financial crises, health crises, humanitarian crises, 13 recessions and 11 bear markets. Still, over that timeframe, U.S. stocks have delivered ~8% average annual returns.
The drawdown we just had was the 39th since 1959. The S&P 500 has had only 2 negative years in the last 15 years (2018 and 2022). These two facts and the table below were found here.

Well, this guy has been in the news lately a little bit. So it was kind of refreshing to go back when he was normal. And meet his first ever wife: “I Was a Starter Wife”: Inside America’s Messiest Divorce. In the middle of her headline-grabbing divorce settlement from Elon Musk, Justine Musk reveals the truth about her marriage to the multimillionaire cofounder of PayPal, Tesla Motors, and SpaceX. ODDZ & ENDZ
Back on March 26, 2024 I posted a shocking story about a lawyer who abandoned his family and career to follow the voices in his head. I always wondered what happened to him. Well, I have great news! A Lawyer Whose Struggle With Psychosis Captivated WSJ Readers Returns Home.
Another story from the Wall Street Journal. Pretty uncommon to lead the Oddz & Endz Section with back to back articles from the WSJ. I was shocked to read this: The Last Decision by the World’s Leading Thinker on Decisions. Shortly before Daniel Kahneman died last March, he emailed friends a message: He was choosing to end his own life in Switzerland. Some are still struggling with his choice. Actually, I am still shocked by it. He chose to go while nowhere near the decline advanced age will likely bring. Which is pretty remarkable and brave imho. You guys remember Dr. Kevorkian? RIP to both.
His death raises profound questions: How did the world’s leading authority on decision-making make the ultimate decision? How closely did he follow his own precepts on how to make good choices? How does his decision fit into the growing debate over the downsides of extreme longevity? How much control do we, and should we, have over our own death? [Are we really free if we don’t make such a decision, assuming we are of a clear mind of course]

MILES & POINTS
Here we go:
Hurry! LAST CALL: Book Before The World Of Hyatt 2025 Award Category Changes March 25, 2025.
Here we go again with another round of beatings from Bilt, getting used to it yet? Bilt Complicates Paying Rent Out Of Network. I made this comment in this video on YouTube from a vlogger who ripped Bilt a giant you know what.
There has never been a card without a signup bonus and crappy (and deteriorating) benefits than the Bilt card. With so much positive spin in the miles and points world. This is what happens when Bilt’s marketing budget goes towards celebrities phucking around with the CEO AND, this is important, pays bloggers and flies them to private island to wine and dine them. Kudos to them for taking Wells Fargo for a ride. It appears WF is not going along with it much longer so they are trying to “adjust” the business model before the sinking ship goes down.
Oh, I guess I am not going to be on the Bilt invite list ever lol.

I don’t post about bank bonuses in general in my blog, there are so many sites for them. But this one is very juicy. Always read the fine print, especially with Capital One Bank! Earn up to a $1,500 bonus. Open a new 360 Performance Savings account with promo code BONUS1500. Bonuses over $1,000 I pay attention to. But we don’t qualify, oh well.
TRAVEL REWARDS CREDIT CARDS
We are going to have several new elevated offers coming aboard, heads up. The one that really stands out and is alive right now is the new Chase IHG Business Premier card giving 200k IHG points. If I had not just gotten the 100k United Business card this is a type of offer that would get me back to IHG. More info on the offer below.
Heads up! Chase Sapphire Preferred 100K Bonus Launching Next Week In-Branch. When this happens, the 100k offer is coming eventually to the blogs, including mine. Hoping to score 10 sales in a month to keep this blog going you guys, we can doeeeeeeet.
Also expected to come are elevated offers for the United Explorer card going up to 80,000 United miles (and also increasing the annual fee to $150, boo) and the United Business card going up to 125,000 United miles (and also increasing the annual fee to $150 along with Amex like coupon-book credits, double boo). I recently got the United Business card for 100,000 miles and this pisses me off and hell yeah I am going to be bothering Chase reps non stop to get me the extra 50k miles. Because I am taking this personally lol.
If you are looking for American Airlines miles and you are short in cash, you can go for the Barclays Aviator Red World Elite MasterCard 70,000 Miles (No Minimum Spend Required). No affiliate links involved here. Good luck dealing with Barclays in general, they are kind of weird.
I can’t believe Cardless is still in business. This is the company that limits its customers to one card. Per lifetime. Ever, wtf! Anyway, cost controls have started, expect more: Cardless Discontinues Boston Celtics/New Orleans Pelicans Card W/ No Notice.
Since we are on a roll today about bad cards, here comes US Bank and Wyndham coming out with, please sit down to contain your “enthusiasm”, a debit card. LOL.
Here is a good article on The Atlantic: There Are Two Kinds of Credit Cards. Yet another way the poor are subsidizing the rich.
Credit-card balances stand at an all-time high of $1.2 trillion, up more than 7 percent year-on-year, and the share of borrowers who are late on their payments has reached its highest point since the aftermath of the Great Recession. Serious delinquency rates are climbing, particularly among consumers under the age of 40.
In the credit-card industry, the well-to-do are known as transactors. They pay off their balance in full every month, avoiding late fees and interest charges. They use credit cards as a convenient payment method, and as a way to earn travel points, cash back, airport-lounge vouchers, seat upgrades, and other goodies. Given how valuable these rewards are, transactors make money by spending money. “If you’re spending $100,000 a year, you’re getting maybe $1,500 back in terms of points or cash,” Aaron Klein of the Brookings Institution told me. “You’re not paying taxes on that. It’s worth closer to $2,500 or $3,000 a year in taxable income.”. Credit-card companies compete intensely for transactors’ business,… (That’s double the average worker’s weekly earnings.) [We are transactors here and love the attention and competition from the banks]
In contrast, the have-nots are known as revolvers. Revolvers are subprime borrowers who use credit cards as a payment tool and as a short-term loan, to cover surprise expenses and groceries the week before payday. Such customers tend to take out no-frills cards, without lavish cash-back rewards and travel points. They also tend to carry a balance from month to month, and sometimes from month to month to month to month. [First, do NOT be a revolver. Second, thank you to revolvers for making all this possible for us. But, truthfully, one day we will have an intervention from above to fix this hugely unfair situation on the ground and it is likely not coming with the current administration, despite all the noise for 10% capped interest rates. When this happens you will see 95%+ of bloggers/vloggers leave the industry to go sell something else other than bank travel rewards credit cards. I would probably still be here trying to sell a few of them to cover the costs of running this ship.]
A strong economy with a brutal cost-of-living crisis is a great economy for the credit-card industry, it turns out. The average balance carried over month-to-month has risen; interest rates have risen; and card issuers have pushed their APRs far beyond prime rates. As a result, the revenue credit-card firms make from interest payments has ballooned from $76 billion in 2020 to $170 billion in 2024, and rewards cards have gotten more rewarding. [Looking forward to bigger bonuses you guys and hopefully some relaxing on the bank restrictions, looking at you Chase at 5/24. I mean, how about 10/24 hey?]
Just added two new BEST EVER offer cards from Amex Marriott Bonvoy. I am not a fan of anything Bonvoy and I don’t want to make this section even more sales-y that it already is, so I am going to drop below my links and then if you want to get more information about the offers check out this link: American Express Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Cards 185,000 Points Signup Bonus & Bevy 155,000 Points Bonus.

More elevated offers finally from Chase:

You also can earn one $100 statement credit and 10k points after you spend $20k on the card. You can earn IHG Diamond status after you spend $40k on the card (please don’t). You can even earn another free night cert (up to 40k points) after you spend $60k on the card. Fourth night free in award stays. 20% discount on points purchases. No foreign transaction fees. Of course you get the usual TSA PreCheck, or NEXUS reimbursement as statement credits. Available from my favorite bank HERE.
100k CHASE United Business (NEW Bonus Coming Soon!)
Note: I applied for this card last week and is now in my hands at last.
And just like that, the welcome offer for this card went up to 100k from 75k. The annual fee is $99 and and the minimum spend is $5k in the first three months. The card earns 2x on United, gas stations, restaurants, office supplies, local transit and commuting. And 1x on everything else. If you buy 7 United tickets with it, you will get a $100 United flight credit at card anniversary. You get two United club passes every year. If you have a personal United card as well, you get a 5,000 mile “better together” bonus. 25% discount on United in flight purchases. Expanded award availability. Ability to earn Premier Qualifying Points (PQP). Free checked bag for credit card holder and one companion on the same reservation. Priority boarding. No foreign transaction fees. Can be a good fit for travelers flying on United a lot. Available from my favorite bank HERE.
We have two NEW great Amex Hilton cards elevated welcome offers:
70k AND Free Night Hilton Honors American Express Card
This is the basic Hilton entry level No Annual Fee card. The signing bonus is 70,000 Hilton Honors points AND a Free Night Award, which matches the BEST EVER welcome offer. The minimum spend is only $2k in the first six months. You also get Silver elite status which includes benefits like a 20% points bonus on stays, free bottled water, the 5th night free on reward stays, and elite rollover nights. The earning structure on the card is: 7x on Hilton purchases, 5x on restaurants, groceries and gas stations and 3x on everything else. These Hilton Free Night certs can be used in ANY property anytime which makes them much more valuable than all other hotel free night certs by far. No foreign transaction fees. If you spend $20k on the card you get upgraded to Hilton Honors Gold elite status. If you like Hiltons and abhor paying annual fees this card could work for you.
130k AND Free Night Hilton Honors Surpass American Express Card
I have this card because Hilton is my #2 hotel program (and closing in to #1 Hyatt). The annual fee is $150 but you can get up to $200 per year ($50 per quarter) credits if you stay in Hiltons or buy a $50 Hilton gift card online (temporarily out of stock). It also gives me Hilton Gold Elite status which is great, especially overseas where you get more upgrades and free breakfast (you get a daily food & beverage credit on US stays). Signing Bonus is 130,000 Hilton Honors points AND a Free Night Award cert, which matches the BEST EVER welcome offer. The minimum spend is a surprisingly low $3k in the first six months. These Hilton free night certs can be used in ANY property anytime which makes them much more valuable than all other hotel free night certs by far. You can earn a second Free Night Award cert after you spend $15k on the card every year. Earning is also very good with 12x on Hilton purchases, 6x on restaurants, groceries and gas stations, 4x on online retail purchases and 3x on everything else. You can upgrade to Diamond elite status if you spend $40k on the card. No foreign transaction fees.
Another elevated offer from Capital One:
75k CAPITAL ONE Venture Rewards PLUS $250 Travel Credit
The annual fee is $95 and the minimum spend required is $4,000 in three months. Capital One cards usually earn a simple flat 2 points on every dollar. This card earns 5x on hotels and car rentals booked on its own travel portal. No foreign transaction fees. Get $120 credit towards Global Entry or TSA Precheck. Complimentary Hertz Five Star elite status. Most importantly, you can transfer the 75,000 points out to airline and hotel partners. Or just erase travel charged on the card for $750. And then of course you get the $250 travel credit. Basically, $1,000 of travel for $95. Very tempting indeed. For diversifying purposes as well if you have enough miles and points elsewhere as it is always nice to use this card to pay for a trip and then use Capital One miles to erase the charges. Capital One can be, well, finicky in approvals. If you are denied, you can not call to ask them to reconsider, it is all done by algorithms so, good luck! Finally, YES, you can have both the Venture X and the Venture Rewards cards.
Frankly, if you only go for one Capital One card it should be the Venture X, see below, no brainer. Oh, by the way, only the Venture X card gets you into Capital One lounges for free.
Please help the small independent blogs like mine continue to exist by supporting them with your CREDIT CARD clicks, thank you!

MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
Did you get a paper check from Amex? American Express Reimbursement Checks Sent Out For ‘Technical Error’. I got one for $9.85. I deposited into my bank account, thanks for the sandwich Amex.
I transferred 130k Amex Memberships Rewards points from my account to Hawaiian Airlines. And then when they landed there I transferred them to my Alaska Airlines account. I bet you there are a LOT of transfers taking the exact same route and I have no doubt that this will end soon. Or restricted in a major way. And I hate paying the Amex fee so much that it is one of my top ten pet peeves playing around in this space. I left 100k Amex MR points back and I am wondering if I should just transfer them too. Good job to everyone who jumped at the recent Amex to Hawaiian transfer bonus. I don’t like to look back, it is what it is.
I am almost done with client tax returns. I continue the multi year streak not extending a single tax return. Stress level is way down, thanks for sticking with me. Who knows, if you stick with me and prevent my second credit card vendor kicking me to the curb for “low sales” I may even hit anniversary year #13 here wow.
Is it just me? Or are the latest movies in the theaters just bad all around? I saw Novocaine recently. It was all right.
Working on hitting the minimum spend for the 100k United Business card right now. And I also managed to hit a targeted promo on the United Gateway card to earn 2 miles on $5k spend. While hitting this card for yet another targeted spend to earn 3x on gas station, grocery stores and restaurants. While I continue to hit daughter’s Discover card to earn 5x on restaurants this quarter as I let her spend the rewards accumulating there. She is planning to hit an Alaska Airlines elite match promo just like her brother did. I guess this is an advantage of working in a large company being targeted by airlines.
I have not done much on travel booking stuff, the picture for the rest of 2025 is still very unclear. I guess we are going back to New York/New Jersey in June for my brother in law’s retirement party which he managed to set it up to occur on my birthday!
I hit a weight low last week last seen in my 20’s! It is now at a point that my belts don’t fit. I guess this is a good problem to have. Lots of walking still, some light jogging here and there. Going back to the weight room as that persistent elbow issue is still there and I just have to cope with it I guess. The human body is weird after you cross the 55 year old age mark I guess.
HOT CREDIT CARD OFFERS:
75k CHASE Ink Business Cash, 75k CAPITAL ONE Venture X, 200k CHASE IHG Business Premier, 75k CHASE Ink Business Unlimited, 100k CHASE United Business, 150k AMEX Business Platinum, 200k CAPITAL ONE Spark Cash Plus, 150k CAPITAL ONE Venture X Business, $1,000 Cash Back CHASE Ink Business Premier, 75k CAPITAL ONE Venture Rewards AND $250 Travel Credit, 90k CHASE Ink Business Preferred, 60k Chase Sapphire Preferred, 80k CHASE Southwest Performance Business, 15k AMEX Blue Business Plus and many more!

The imaginary editor did not catch a mistake before the email with the post went out to blog list subscribers. The capped interest rate mentioned has been corrected to 10%, not 100%. We apologize for this error, it’s not like we traded Luka 🙂
Ooopsie, found another error. The new Chase United Business card coming soon will be at 125k United miles, not 150k as stated in the blog post originally that went to email list subscribers.
Going to have to discipline the TBB staffer responsible for this, must be a slacker!
You should double the pay for your current editor and get somebody twice as good.
Hey Buzz,
Where did you get a sandwich for $9.85? Was that the suggested tip?
Congrats on the weight loss! That’s terrific. Good way to lessen the strain on the body.
Interesting insight as to why credit card rewards are increasing …
Thanks, as always, for the great links.
I’ll second the congrats on the weight loss and offer this in case it helps anybody: my wife got curious about blood sugar monitors (she doesn’t have type 2 diabetes but my dad does and he’s talked our ears off about blood sugar monitors) and decided to get one. For those who don’t know, they’re a little patch you stick on your arm and it sends a measurement to your phone every 15 minutes. Long story short, she’s lost 10 pounds in a month or two by trying to keep her blood sugar from spiking.
As far as the belt thing goes, I have been using belts that have Velcro for decades. Infinite adjustment plus never have had to take them off when I would have to go through the Xray machine.
As per usual, lots of good stuff here for which I thank you. Done with school here and it went pretty good and off to Naples Sunday. Likely raining too, dangit. The recent floods around this area did NOT affect Florence hardly at all which is good, but other towns in the region got flooded and it is always sad to see.
Hope the feet are doing OK!
Hey Buzz,
Thanks for the great post, lots to catch up on this weekend, and lots of Hyatt booking to do at the last minute.
Good luck on finding the new editor btw.
The new IHG 200k and upcoming United biz cards look interesting for a year, I’ll keep you posted as always.
The Leicester victory several years ago was a great treat. Looking forward to perusing that article.
Good for you regarding your health, keep up the good work young fella!
Thank you Nick for your comment regarding the monitor.
Carl, have a great time! Have you spent time in Lucca?
Best to the family Buzz and enjoy the dance!
Yes, I’ve been to Lucca a couple times and was once there for the big comics festival event. That was awesome! Off to Napoli Sunday from Firenze!
We have kept Hilton as our #2 program but think come 2026 it may become our primary as with SLH it has a way better range of properties than Hyatt. You have probably already featured this one but we re considering staying at Cape Fahn, Koh Samui. However much better to book direct vs via Hilton as way cheaper and better inclusive items and plus I prefer to keep money in my pocket vs earning more points. Of course we wouldn’t be saying that if we had sufficient points 80k a night. https://www.capefahnhotel.com/offers/
Carl, we also use velcro belts. And I will even confess these days I am partial to grandma jeans with elastic waist. David, if you find anything re Lucca please share as it has been on our list forever.
Will respond tomorrow Saturday.
Just wanted to add this link for Carl. My client was just in Bologna and I can’t believe he did not go drive these as he is a car guy. Waiting to feature Carl driving a Lamborghini in the next TBB post 🙂
