Somewhere in Portugal. Biggest wave ever. Found on Twisted Sifter. I am in awe everytime I look at this! |
ON MY MIND
The World Cup qualifying game USA vs Costa Rica in a ferocious snowstorm was just an amazing site to see. I can not believe the game was played to the end! Heroic win 1-0 for USA. Earlier yesterday, Bosnia handed Greece a punishing loss 3-1. I was planning to be in Brazil for the World Cup in 2014. I am not so sure now…
Looks like Mrs. TBB has accepted a job offer and joining one of the Big Three car companies. And she is still getting paid from her former employer until mid June. #winning This will delay the introduction of the best affiliate links lol.
Some of the giveaways fellow bloggers do are a bit ridiculous. I only enter a contest if it will make a meaningful difference in my life. And of course only if it requires no talent whatsovever! And it is almost always a one-time entry. Daraius, I am sorry I will let someone else win that packet of incense 🙂
I appreciate all the comments and do try to get to all of them. But sometimes I may not due to time constraints. But of course I do read every single one!
MILES/POINTS
Daraius come on! Your Million Mile Secrets Friday interviews were supposed to be of “where renowned mile and point gurus share their insights”. Mark of The Travel Playbook is a nice kid who tries hard but he has a lot to learn about this game! Hey Mark, you may want to get a different credit card of the month as the Virgin America card application link (!!!!) is dead! Mark, you are welcome for the additional hits:-)
Delta is driving me insane. It is not bad enough that they now take away Skymiles from widows and children afte burying their loved ones, they shamefully attempt to spin this positively! Unbelievable. At this USA Today piece Delta’s spokesman says “We are the only airline whose miles do not expire, so our customers have the ability to enjoy using miles without the risk of ever losing them,” she said.”We are proud to have that policy, because it affects every SkyMiles member. In order to offer this unique benefit, some other, lesser-used policies were examined and determined not to have as much value to our members.”
I never liked the term travel hacking.
TRAVEL
The Travel Writing Advice You Don’t Want to Hear. From Alexis Grant. Well, it is no secret really. You are not going to make a living in this, not many are Jason Steeles types:-) So you can hammer trip reports all you want, noone is paying you anything decent. Or, light bulb moment, you can morph into a renowned miles/points guru, dispense advice veterans have known since the 90s and push the s**t out of them affiliate links. Then you pay a small fee for original content while you enjoy your massage in a first class lounge somewhere while your staff back in your high end apartment….keeps pushing them links:-) Rinse and repeat.
40 Mesmerizing Pics of Glistening City Lights. From Francesco Mugnai. Wow!
ODDZ & ENDZ
This lady escaped North Korea and gave this TED Talk. Wow! This is very powerful.

ROFL! Thanks for the subtle hint, George. I never liked the term travel hacking either. But it seems to be one that people used. There was a time before credit cards and their links became so popular…

Your blog is better than the title of it! Chase was right:-) I think the sooner you change it the better off you will looking down the road. If you keep it you may never have a chance for a “Welcome New York Times” readers type of post;-)
Just a constructive suggestion Scott. And yes that was not as subtle as I thought:-)
Amol (@PointsToPointB) says
Is it odd that I don’t like the term hacking either? 😛
TravelBlogger Buzz says
I think Scott should poll his readers about this issue:-)
Anonymous says
If you let us know about that poll, I know how that poll will go.

It’s ironic that one highlight of TBB is actually getting up in the (UK) morning and reading all the comments on the previous days post. Some real gems, usually!
You should pull the email subscriptions, because anyone who gets TBB that way is missing most of the fun!
TravelBlogger Buzz says
I think you are right but I am biased. Thanks for reading!

That wave was probably photographed in or around Nazaré, Portugal. I have been there and it is stunning…the offshore topography underwater focuses the wave action there like almost no where else on Earth. Even in the “low” season, it is stunning. 😉
TravelBlogger Buzz says
Yes I am pretty sure it is Nazare!

The reason there are a ton of stupid “leave a comment to enter” giveaway is the same as for the stupid “enter 1 in comment below and see what happens” or “today is blah, what do you think about blahblah” posts on Facebook – the “engagement” score. FB has its own algorithms to determine how popular your post (and page) is and how often it should stick it into the news feed. Advertisers are looking for comments on any given blog. Unfortunately, it encourages quantity rather than quality, hence the bombardment of this stuff from everywhere. Can’t really blame the bloggers either – they are not coming up with these silly rules.
TravelBlogger Buzz says
Yes, you are right. I will never fall for this for a drink coupon or amenity kit type prizes:-)

Hey, did you know that Hertz NeverLost GPS has a feature where one can search and navigate to the nearest CVS with like 2 touches of the screen? And then to the next one…and the next…and the next….then wash, rinse, repeat the enxt day? I am in heaven… 🙂
Dima says
I remember trying to Use the NeverLost a couple of years ago – it was probably the most frustrating experience of my life and we dubbed it “NeverWorks”. Glad to see it is improving.
TravelBlogger Buzz says
That’s neat. I can see that being featured as a benefit in advertisements about renting at Hertz lol
Blakes Takes says
Dima – oh, its still pretty bad, but it is easier than my craptastic BlackBerry navigator from 2003 😮
