BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
Blogging is not easy. Especially with all the insanity going on around us. This “venture” employs no algorithms, no AI, no clickbait, no sponsors, no ads. And now no tariffs too.
Support what you value. Without such support it is not possible to continue to exist. Prevent enshittification and resist!
I moved the Liberation Day/Tariffs section below the Personal Finance section. And took “Liberation Day” out of it. And starting with next Friday’s post, depending on developments, it may not be back. Or, who the hell knows? This blog keeps evolving trying to make a credit card or coffee sale to keep the lights on lol.
NEW: Huge 100,000 point offer on the card all four of us in my household have and keep from my favorite bank – literally the offer of the year in my opinion, even better than the 75k Capital One Venture X!

Jason Zweig at the Wall Street Journal still brings it: Four Questions You Should Ask to Combat the Market Chaos.
U.S. stocks have averaged a return of 10.3% annually over the past century. In just two days, April 3 and 4, the S&P 500 lost 10.5%. Then, on April 9, it gained 9.5%—only to dive again the next day. Days have become years. [If anyone told you they predicted and profited from trading this, RUN away fast].
What do you own and why do you own it?
Why do you own stocks?
What has changed?
If you didn’t already own this asset, would you buy it at this price?
If you can’t answer the four questions, you have no business taking drastic actions.
Good explanation how tax rates work: Why Your Top Tax Rate Isn’t What You Actually Pay.
Very interesting juicy facts in the 2025 Global Debt Report. Can you be financially independent if you have debt? Ok, just dropped that to trigger some people lol. All I can say is having zero debt is liberating and no client ever regretted paying off their mortgage to be debt free. Also, every country in the world should get its act together to make sure its debt does not get out of control. Remember Greece. Don’t get me started about the long list of countries that have defaulted in the past and will continue to do so. Also, I can’t help myself, I am so glad Fed Chair Jerome Powell is still in his post keeping us intact #prayhestays.
TARIFFS
So many things happening every day so some of these may already be dated ok?
Excellent analysis: What the World Learned from Donald Trump’s Tariff Week. The danger behind the President’s posturing is that, by so emphatically insisting on America’s indispensability, he may be undermining it. The key two sentences of this article below. Imagine you are a company CEO and trying to make long term plans not knowing what tariffs will apply in 30 or 90 days or tomorrow at 11 am.
The White House’s theory seems to be that high tariffs will eventually incentivize manufacturers to relocate, say, auto plants and aluminum smelters to the U.S. But businesses need stability to make the kinds of major capital investments that building new factories in this country requires, not a climate defined by ninety-day pauses and abrupt reversals.
Fantastic podcast with Peter R. Orszag at The Ezra Klein show: Trump’s Tariffs, Market Panic and What Comes Next. Ok, I understand. Both of these guys are far deep in one side of the debate. It is still a great educational discussion trying to make sense of what the hell is going on out there. You can skip it. It is a free country. Well, kind of lately. Anyway, I think we can all agree on at least this one thing:
What markets hate is uncertainty
I am typing this paragraph on Wednesday morning. And I am so confused by all the messaging. Started with the US Treasury Secretary saying that there will be clarity soon and we won’t need to wait for 90 days. Over at the WSJ, they are talking about how the US administration intends to isolate the Chinese negotiating with every country that is now tarrifed at the very minimum 10%. Yeah, even the penguins over at remote islands no one had even heard of before. But wait, exemptions to not hurt Apple and our own obsession with all istuff we keep buying. Wait, new exemptions for the car manufacturers too. Maybe. Oh, and later this morning Trump signaled to Xi to call him up to make a deal. Wait, I thought the plan all along was to isolate China and pissing off our friends in Europe and even the Canadians is the way to go about this? WTF! By Thursday, now even Fed chair Powell is blamed. I mean, this is so exhausting and, oh wait, this was the plan all along and the art of the deal apparently smh. Enter a bunch of f words next smh. Sorry, I can’t help myself.
April 9 memo by Howard Marks: Nobody Knows (Yet Again). Which is actually one of my favorite expressions, the “Nobody Knows” part that is. Maybe Howard reads my blog? Ok, that was a joke.
There’s absolutely no place for certainty in the world of investing, and that’s particularly true at turning points and during upheavals.
I consider the tariff developments thus far to be what soccer fans call an “own goal” – a goal scored for the other side when a player accidentally puts the ball into his own team’s net. In this way, they’re highly analogous to Brexit, and we know how that turned out. Brexit cost the British mightily in terms of GDP, morale, and alliances, and it harmed their reputation for governance and stability. All of this damage was self-inflicted…Just a couple of months ago, the U.S. economy was performing well, the outlook was positive, the stock market was at an all-time high, and there was much talk about American exceptionalism. Now, if Trump’s tariffs are put into effect, the U.S. economy is likely to experience a recession sooner than otherwise would have been the case, higher inflation, and extensive dislocation. Even if the tariffs are reversed entirely, it’s unlikely the other nations will dismiss this incident and conclude that they have nothing to worry about in terms of relations with the U.S.
The Detroit Free Press business writer Susan Tompor called it perfectly imho in this article: US bond market, Brexit could foreshadow trouble for your 401(k).
Experts warn that more 401(k) pain could be ahead, thanks to market bears, bond vigilantes and what some financial experts call the “moron premium.” Never heard of it? The “moron premium” or “moron risk premium” is a term that hit the charts three years ago during a British budget crisis.

I didn’t think an article about Elon Musk will shock me. But this one sure did, wow: The Tactics Elon Musk Uses to Manage His ‘Legion’ of Babies—and Their Mothers. The world’s richest man juggles more than a dozen children and ‘harem drama’ along with running his companies and advising Trump. He recently took a paternity test in a battle with one woman over money and privacy. I can’t believe this guy has fans, what is wrong with you? Warning: I suggest you sit down if you decide to read this and I highly suggest you keep breakable things away from you, you are welcome. Just a short excerpt, you have been warned!
Musk has had at least 14 children with four women… Multiple sources close to the tech entrepreneur said they believe the true number of Musk’s children is much higher than publicly known. Musk offered St. Clair $15 million and $100,000 a month in support in exchange for her silence about the child, whom they named Romulus. Similar agreements had been negotiated with other mothers of Musk’s children…Musk refers to his offspring as a “legion,” a reference to the ancient military units that could contain thousands of soldiers and were key to extending the reach of the Roman Empire…While she was pregnant, Musk had urged her to deliver the baby via caesarean section and told her he didn’t want the child to be circumcised. (Musk has posted on X that vaginal births limit brain size and that C-sections allow for larger brains.) [I had a really hard time controlling myself while reading this…I need to do better controlling myself lol]

The banks are coming with new and “refreshed” offers all the time recently. I think the Chase Sapphire Reserve annual fee is finally going from $550 to probably at least $695 later this year. And we may finally see Citi come out with a Strata premium card. At this rate, we may see the first Strata lounge open in…2030 lol.
This does not apply to most of us here. If you pay these fees you should not be reading this section. Judge tosses Biden-era CFPB rule capping credit card late fees.

Chase British Airways: 100,000 Point Bonus After $7,500 In Spend (Aer Lingus & Iberia) – Ok, when SUBs get to 100k it should get our attention. Better offers out there but some of you may find it ok to go for it, see the links HERE.
Cardless Avianca Cards – Increased 100,000 Mile Bonus – Ok, I looked at it because it is 100k. But, you know, it is offered by Cardless which allows you ONLY one card…EVER, wtf! So, unless you absolutely love Avianca, pass.
FNBO Launches MGM Rewards Iconic World Elite Mastercard – So much anticipation for the new MGM card only to fall disappointingly short. You don’t get much for a $249 annual fee unless you go to Las Vegas and stay in an MGM property to get a $200 statement credit. Signup Bonus SUB? 40k, pass.

MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
2025 travel plans are still in a kind of suspension mode. And I have this burning desire to get away. So, thinking to drive to see the caves in Mammoth Cave, Kentucky next weekend. Any tips?
I noticed an extra 10,000 Capital One miles in my account and my first thought was: “Oh oh, CO cut the referral bonus?”. And then I realized it was the annual 10,000 retention miles.
Got 70,000 AA miles back as son is no longer going to Bali. Not a shocking development, booking something to hold it and canceling with the miles being refunded without any fees is cool.
The highlights of the Manchester United vs Lyon in the Champions League quarterfinals had one of the craziest endings ever, wow!
My first race after my last marathon in Chicago back in 2023. We ran the 2025 University of Michigan Big House 5k again. Less than 15 minutes slower than my PR. I was aiming to keep it at less than double my PR time. So, big success. It is becoming obvious that the marathon days are behind me. And it sucks. It is what it is. Looking forward to get the bike out, if only spring will hurry up and get here.
My hometown Larissa in Greece is still glowing from the local soccer team AEL FC winning the 2nd Division soccer championship. There was a fiesta after the home game last week, which we won by the way 5-0. Here are the highlights and the five goals. After the game the team did a parade and rode a bus all the way to downtown. And guess what? It went through my old neighborhood and the home I grew up in. Here is a long video of the bus route, can you feel the joy of the fans? Some notes:
4.00 – 6.00 The park you see was not there when I was a child. It was an army barracks and closed off. We used to sneak in screwing around…
7.00 Welcome to my neighborhood where I roamed the streets. Oh, when we moved there in the mid 70s most of these houses did not exist. I love that Bread Factory store, yummy.
8.22 – 8.36 My home on the second floor of the BP gas station. My father and uncle opened the gas station in the mid 70s. My cousin runs it now and my nephew lives in my home (sold to them in 2019). From here on is a route I have taken way too many times to downtown.
10.30 That used to be the English school I went. Skipped class one too many times so when I got to the US I was completely lost lol.
11.12 That sweet shop is still there, so many calories consumed here. My dad used to bring boxes of sweet treats and it was wonderful.
I could go on and on…We Are Back!

Going to see caves! Ah. South West Virginia has a bunch of interesting caves. We were hooked on cave trips for a while. We visited one in Australia. I got a picture of a pet bat (!) on my son’s shoulder.
Thanks for the links!
Totally agree on paying off debt!
Man! Good collection of stuff to read. Saving this for Easter as basically *everything* will be closed here (Bologna). Thanks, George!
School was good but draining. Each day once done I felt like my brain had been wrung out and left to dry. Today’s the first day I have not taken a nap afterward! Done with school for this trip though. I went to a school also in Florence and I liked that one better and am thinking of returning sometime to do more school.
Good on the running thing but please take care of the feet!
Bats make me feel creepy, sorry/not sorry.
Hey Buzz,
Thanks for another great post for the weekend.
Great to hear you will start taking it easier on your feet.
Definitely looking forward to watching the Larissa videos. Speaking of football, how about the Gunners? Not many, if any saw that coming versus Los Blancos.
Funny you mentioned the huge Cap One offer. I received an offer from them yesterday for 400,000 points after 300k spend in 6 months. There’s the 1M offer you were curious to see.
I spoke to Amex a couple weeks ago and they gave me very generous spending offers on 9 cards, which I will meet in about 6 weeks. The bonus haul will be 850k points. Guess I’ll have to hang onto the coupon cards for another year…
I just applied for the United biz card with your link and of course it went pending. I’ll keep you posted as always.
Thanks again Buzz and have a great weekend.
If you’re in the mood for caves you can stop by Indiana Caverns, just south of my ancestral homeland of Corydon, IN which is more or less on your way down to Mammoth Cave. It’s pretty cool. I was going to recommend you stop at the famous Butt Drugs while you’re in Corydon but apparently they closed. Thankfully their commercials are still available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oYYdF0zcuSI
Besides Butt Drugs, Corydon’s claim to fame is being the home of actor James Best, who played the sheriff on “Dukes of Hazzard”.
If you want a slightly more convenient nature-themed state park, Falls of the Ohio would be a nice pit stop. And if you stop there, you should probably stop at Schimpff’s Confectionery, about a mile away in Jeffersonville.
If you’re headed to Kentucky, do a search for The Bourbon Trail and see about taking a tour or two at some of the distilleries. It’s usually free and surprisingly fun. Mammoth caves is pretty enjoyable as well.
Nice beach list. I’ll be at the one in Nusa Penida next month but don’t think I’ll be climbing down. Tripadvisor reviews say the climb is pretty gruesome. Interesting as well that one of the beaches listed is a hotel.

Since each day feels like a month and each month feels like a decade, there’s no compelling reason to wait until we officially reach day one hundred of the new administration to assess their first 100 days in office. As Dana Milbank explains in WaPo (Gift Article): Trump is wrapping up 100 days of historic failure. He hasn’t gotten many bills signed. He hasn’t ended the wars he promised to end. He plunged the markets and created instability in the global economy. He’s offended our closest allies and dramatically decreased international tourism to the US. He’s been great for China and provided solace to Russia. He’s been losing court cases. His approval rating is dropping. But, in fairness, this is a presidency that seems determined to be judged not only by traditional measures of political success, but also by the amount of damage it can do. So it’s worth noting that, as Milbank points out, “Trump, whose 100th day in office is April 30, has achieved one thing that is truly remarkable: He has introduced a level of chaos and destruction so high that historians are hard-pressed to find its equal in our history. He has upended global structures that kept the peace for generations. He has aligned America with the world’s despots. He has slashed the federal workforce and impaired the government’s ability to collect taxes, administer Social Security and fund medical research, among many other things. He has abused his power in startling ways, using the government for personal vengeance and retribution against perceived opponents, harassing law firms, universities and the free press with an authoritarian flourish. He has shattered the guardrails that limit executive power, ignoring laws, eliminating inspectors general and other mechanisms for accountability and oversight. He has displayed gratuitous cruelty in the treatment of migrants and government workers alike. He has used the government to undertake breathtaking schemes of self-enrichment. And he has left a large number of his countrymen angry and frightened.”
