The Lazy Traveler describes a really bad experience after he missed a flight in Brazil. Don’t let this happen to you! An excerpt:
There are safeguards that you must put in place when you travel.
- Set up notifications with the airline you’re flying on (but be aware that they don’t always work).
- Check your existing reservations on a regular basis, but especially three days and 10 hours prior to departure.
- Always check in online when you have this option.
- Avoid booking round trips unless you have to — there is more than one reason for that.
- Print out your itinerary even though you don’t need it for the airport check-in. Print it anyway.
And if you have still managed to screw up, remember this.
- Never presume that nothing can be done just because the official rules say so.
- HUCA, HUCA, HUCA.
- Always be friendly and polite, no matter what. Ask a CSR what he/she would do; make her root for you.
- Never take it seriously when an agent tells you that nothing can be done. Always ask for a supervisor if you feel you aren’t getting anywhere, but never be a dick about it.
- HUCA and try another supervisor if the first one was unhelpful.
- If you’re getting nowhere despite a good-faith effort, just give up and move on with your life.

Breaking: Every Monday night I play soccer with my team “Gasping For Air” in an over 40 league. Final game of the season, it came down to it to see who is the champion. We went down by one and then we stormed back to score three goals against “The Subs”. I scored two of them. Back to back championships. One of the pure joys of life!

Pumped to be be golden
In light of TBB’s golden performance, I am ceding my position — anyone that old that can run around a cow pasture kicking a ball is golden! 😉
Perhaps the only hidden “gem” in the PointsBreak list is the Crowne Plaza in MGA. Not my go-to hotel there but I have stayed often over the last 15 years and been a regular patron of the bar (surprise!) even when not a guest of the hotel.
In fact I was just there in February to complete whatever was the IHG spring promo, They are undergoing a major remodel and the lobby was a mess but that work should be done. If you plan to stay there, ask for a remodeled lake view/high floor room. The reservation office is VERY responsive to direct requests — read the responses to reviews on the IHG site and Google will be your friend.

RE the IHG pointbreaks list: I’m seeing a new phenomena. There are some hotels I want on the list (in Europe) but when I select for my dates, they are not available. You can then click on Available dates for that hotel and you might see 1 in 3 days are open (if you are lucky).
Is this a new devaluation, or did I not notice it before?

@PedroNY: We finished 6-2. One of our losses was to this same team. We got lucky this time, they have a SUPERB player and he was missing. Whenever he plays, we lose. Whenever he is missing, we win. Yeah, he is THAT good. Not sure if we have another championship ahead as our best player signed up to play voleyball on Monday nights to play with his wife. Yeah, huge letdown. I mean, picking coed volleyball compared to the king of sports!
@Karma is a bitch: I have not watched any of the games in that series. I just wished the Detroit Pistons could steal one. Oh well, there is always next year. It will be interesting to see how GS responds without Stephen.
