Delta Hikes Award Prices For Partner Flights – See The Difference…And Weep…Again!
I was not going to write about this but since it appears to be THE news in this space the past few days…I guess I am going to say something. Because, you know, I am an expert and all that crap. Look, I knew something was up when Delta announced the elite friendly change in the companion upgrades a day earlier. These assholes ALWAYS do that…right before they stick the knife deeper in our backs. Not my problem, I stopped flying them completely back in 2012 and, get this, I am STILL trying to burn my last Skymilesshit. Speaking of shit, you can read this from the archives: Should Delta Skymiles Be Reamed Skyshit same old story really.
I am going to keep it short for you. This is not a big deal by itself. We all know Skyshit is the worst “currency” out there (with AA giving it a good run for it nowadays). But…I should have a contest perhaps…can you guess how long before United matches this? And American? I mean, can you imagine American miles getting any worse than now? So, to summarize for you all, we have two distinct things going on here:
A. This hobby is ending right before our eyes. It’s a combination of factors. More like the perfect storm really. Economy doing well, less capacity, less legacy airlines, banks restricting churners, too many miles floating, elite qualifications now go only to the ones paying the big bucks (mileage runs? LOL) ,we have revenue based earning pretty much across the board, revenue based burning is continuing (wtf do yo think this is huh?), the super easy deals have been shut down and on and on. Why would you collect miles when you can get a 2% cash back card, save you all the aggravation and then just book a super low fare deal from the Flight Deal guys?
B. Bloggers in the miles and points space are in the BUSINESS of selling you a dream. To get you hooked to come back to their sites while you have visions of flying in a First Class flat bed, drinking Krug and eating caviar, even taking a shower before retreating to your suite in the sky. All the “secrets to help family and friends travel for free” is just a sales job on their readers to sell them more credit cards because there is a LOT of MONEY in selling plastic! So many assholes out there pretending to be experts while doing their best to trick their readers to click on their credit card ad.
A day does not go by without me finding some bozo out there with a new site doing the exact same thing to attract clicks. Do you think they will tell you that this hobby is past its prime and you should not get any travel rewards credit cards? Yeah…right! Oh, they may be bitching a little now but they will soon be back selling Amex Delta credit cards or the bank cards touting how you could transfer to Delta within a few days!
I could pretend it is not the end of the world and this is an amazing hobby at the height of its prime. But that would make me like all the other bloggers. Remember, I have no integrity lol. I need to stop earning and burn some of my stash before they become like Venezuelan currency. And seriously think about moving on to a new hobby…screw basket weaving, thinking about learning how to create electronic music (please don’t laugh, thanks).
Why You Should (Or Shouldn’t) Become a Point Geek
In the mainstream media, there is SO MUCH bullshit by writers who clearly have no clue about this quirky hobby. They think travel hacking is The Points Guy or something, WTF! We are talking completely clueless writers. Don’t get me started with writers discovering “expert” bloggers who managed to book a family trip to Orlando for free and they do articles on them (of course always with backlinks to their blogs where they sell credit cards to newbies passing horrifically bad advice as travel hacking secrets!).
So, when you see a writer who mostly gets it…it is completely shocking! This is one of these articles, enjoy it, especially you newbie. I like the conclusion so you get a feel for it…
For most people point collecting is hard to justify in terms of card fees and time spent. Like playing the market, lots of people end up losing, even if they think they are winning.
Life Rules
This is great, you should probably read the whole thing, I am just pasting here the rules only.
- We all want to be listened to
- Tell your story
- Life’s too short to do something you hate
- Life boils down to dreamers who act and dreamers who are afraid
- Not everybody can win and there is no scorecard
- He who speaks loudest first is oftentimes wrong
- Know when to quit
- Just because everybody else is jumping off the bridge, that does not mean you should
- Sex and cunning and flirting will move you up the corporate food chain
Passports To Countries That No Longer Exist
Just love this! Apparently, there is a guy named Tom Topol who is an avid collector, check out his fantastic site at Passport-Collector.com for more! Lame blogger question…which one is your favorite?

Tweet of the Day:
“If Trump wanted to shut down the airports in Syria, he didn’t have to fire Tomahawk missiles . He could have just sent Delta gate agents to run the ground ops.”

So so brutal.
I think we are the only ones up early on Sundays…Actually I slept in…I woke at 6.24 am, I am slacking!
Bikeguy says
AA miles are more useless than Delta, IMHO.

The fact that we are having this conversation while over in my Feedly I see more cheery posts at the Titan blogs (with exclamation marks and Emily always being so happy and Gary so excited getting his Amex Plat card in a wood case wow) is just…sad.
Mr.Nice says
Just new apps getting the wood case I’m guessing… or those running millions of OPM through their personal card. No box for my replacement card…

Good writing today, Buzz.

I don’t care. I’m on vacation!

Hmmm, not sure you can have two medals…need to wake up the TBB Medals Committee to table this topic and make a decision…

At this point, I feel like people have had many years lead time to do the math and figure out that there are better ways to make more money for travel than outdated methods like credit card churn or mileage running. Many, many years.
I do feel bad sometimes about people who got caught with hundreds of thousands of miles that are now worth very little. But for how many years have we been preaching that this is a currency that devalues? You can bring a horse to water but you can’t persuade him to take off the blinkers and headphones…

Delta mileage run? 🙂

Buzz… have to agree DL is satans pit re:mile usage, but I’ll put AA next. Their useless web site, inability to book partners online, WEEKS blacked out, not even standard avail… WTF?
Wife coming w me to Greece in 2 weeks. Took 30 min to look on AA, nothing, BA nothing, UA app ( yes their app, not the linked web portal that AA does) boom! 30+ Standard avail flights with one cxn…
Was able to get STD biz to Japan at Christmas on JL using AA, but took me another hour looking on BA and calling to book… what is this 1996?
Like you haven’t flown maybe 2-3 r/t since the borg ate NWA. Fondly remember those days… Delta is the worst and I still get Amex card apps weekly! Told the wife “NO” we’ll get the Hyatt card before a DL Amex!
Speaking of DL… twitter stories of ppl still trapped in ATL. What’s up w the meltdown? None of the “bloggers” are saying much…
Have a great weekend!

Best comment of the day. By far.
I hear you…
Chris says
The flight deal is great if you have complete flexibility in your flight dates. This is also true for award tickets as well. But I’ve been planning 6-11 months ahead usually and I’m able to get the award seats I need usually. AA and UA are really horrible at releasing award seats at the low level.

True…
I wish I can plan travel that far out…Wife is not helping. But too busy to sit down and do it myself….TBBing=entertaining and educating my audience…
I need to sign off and watch last night’s SNL taped show…
