We blog about Hyatt Globalist mania, business travel demise, the huge generational wealth gap, best tax moves in December, we travel to so many places again (Siberia, Armenia, Tunisia, Italy, Dresden, Slovenia), the absolute best Covid-19 coverage, then we get into McRibs, donuts, bank robberies, sounds to help you sleep, redwoods, gangster movies and lot more to keep you busy through the weekend. Keep the faith folks, we will get out of this…hopefully in one piece lol.

If you are not at least a bit concerned about taking the vaccine you are probably not human. Hotels are trying hard to get us all back to traveling and staying with them. Many have extended elite statuses for all of 2021 and made it easier to achieve higher elite status. Along with extending the expiration of free award night certificates, discounts on redeemed awards along with lot of (mostly uninspiring) promotions. Hyatt does have some juicier promos and then boom: Wow! Hyatt slashes 2021 elite status requirements & extends lucrative promos. You can actually reach Globalist elite status sometime between January 1 and end of February 2021 as the elite night requirements are now half of what they used to be. Add in the double elite level night promo for the first two months of the year along with free nights from the Chase World of Hyatt credit cards and…oh boy, I am even tempted to do this!
Then again, would you be staying at Hyatt hotels enough to get all the Globalist benefits? This is one question only YOU can answer. Personally, maybe not most of 2021 but maybe I can target some mega trips in 2022 staying at some nice Hyatts as Globalist status will be good until February 2023! I need to research this more…This is an addiction, I am warning all the newbies 🙂 Having said all that, if this does not get travelers to travel and increase occupancy…I don’t know what will. And of course the Globalist elite benefits will undoubtedly devalue if indeed this makes members go for it as your esteemed blogger is thinking about it. Or maybe I am just hooked playing this game you guys like you lol. #Developing
More ideas: Ludicrously easy path to Hyatt Globalist status (top-tier status for 2 years!). In this crazy hobby you will ALWAYS find hobbyists justifying doing crazy shit and/or spending $ they would have never spent for just those special moments when you redeem points and feel oh so special lol.

Your American Airlines AAdvantage account has a tab for “Promotions”. Check it because AA dropped a gift for each member. Two out of the five accounts I handle got 100 miles each and everything else was way too underwhelming…what a waste of time.

Update: Another Wall Street Journal article with lots of info nuggets that go along with some of the themes I have been pounding here: Airline Cards Lose Luster as Coronavirus Persists. The cards have for years helped attract big-spending customers, but their perks are less compelling in a global pandemic.
…travel purchases were down about 70% on Visa Inc. cards in the last quarter compared with a year ago. Travel and entertainment purchases were down 69% on American Express Co. cards.
At Visa, the largest U.S. card network, credit card spending volume was down about 9% and debit volume was up 20% in its most recent quarter.
Airline-card solicitations that were emailed or mailed in the third quarter had an average sign-up bonus of 50,037 miles or points, up 53% from the prior quarter.
I have been reading The Middle Seat column in the Wall Street Journal for years. The latest one The Covid Pandemic Could Cut Business Travel by 36%—Permanently was very alarming. Since you probably can not access the article due to the WSJ paywall, I am going to summarize the key points here:
…a look at data suggests between 19% and 36% of all air trips are likely to be lost [to remind you, Bill Gates estimated 50% recently. These are estimates and nobody really knows what will happen. But it is likely going to be major damage because…]
The top 10% to 15% of customers at global carriers typically account for about 40% of revenue. Overall, Bank of America estimates business trips contributed $334 billion to the entire travel industry’s $1.1 trillion in revenue last year.
Airlines like American, Delta and United in the U.S. and foreign carriers like Lufthansa, British Airways and Singapore are built around business travelers.
Faced with a loss of business travel, big airlines will no doubt try to raise ticket prices for leisure passengers to make up for reduced revenue. But that may be difficult. Low-cost carriers represent about 20% of U.S. airline capacity and can force airlines to match low prices. A lot of leisure travel is discretionary and if it gets too expensive, not as many people will go. Mr. Baldanza says that means big airlines will have to cut costs to stay profitable. [Yikes…]

I am kind of bored with the miles game lately. I am just working on a few spending promos, one with wife’s Southwest card for a 30% bonus and another one with son’s World of Hyatt card for another free night. At this time, I have 4 Hyatt free nights, 2 Hilton free nights and 1 free Accor/Fairmont free night. I also closed a few cards to make this a bit more manageable. Bye bye Amex Hilton Business card and wife’s Chase Ink Cash card (I gave up on her going to Office Depot to buy gift cards of the places she shops). Few weeks ago I finally killed the CNB card…that was a great ride as I still have AA gift cards!
If someone has an idea for a super low way to knock out about 12 Hyatt nights in January or February from the comfort of my home (or even a short drive from Ann Arbor, Michigan) please let me know. I checked out some of these new Work from Hyatt day rates and they were even higher than regular nights, boo!

Another great post-I’ll be linking and reading all weekend.
Buried in the Don’t Mess with Taxes link is another link to a DMWT 2013 post on zero rate capital gains for folks with low taxable income. With no Required Minimum Distributions in 2020, many could use this to get a tax-free bump in their basis to fair market value. Or better yet, re-buy the stock using funds already in your Roth IRA and never pay taxes. Mandatory on this one: Get your tax advisor to ok this one for you, and blame her or him, not me (nor Buzz, though he’ll likely be pardoned by then).
I too am bored with the game. Racking up even bigger balances for airline awards seems silly when I haven’t even been on a bus since February. Called for a take-out pizza last night, and the recording said they were closed until Friday out of “..an abundance of caution”. My wife said “Oh, we can get a pizza for dinner tomorrow”. Yeah, right.
Back to the game, I ran the numbers and getting a lowest-priced Delta award for US to Europe in Business Class saves you about 1.5 cents per Skymile used. And that’s if you can find a lowest-priced DL award. No value assigned for long layovers on sub-optimal itinerary, orphaned miles, time spent reading Flyertalk, Reddit and blogs, trips to buy gift cards, trips to Walmart to cash them out, gas, tires, divorce, on and on. 1.5 cents per Skymile if all that stuff is free. As B.B. King sang, the thrill is gone.
The website said there will be 23 million people ahead of me for the vaccine. Oh, please, go right ahead and I’ll wait a bit. Getting the vaccine will be a lot easier than getting Springsteen tickets. And I bet the nurses won’t be singing Prove It All Night.
My comments have become much longer. Don’t worry, Ingy-No extra charge.
A lot of that WW2 damage is still there in central Dresden. At first I thought the buildings were dirty. No, that’s smoke damage from the bombs 70 years ago. Dresden’s pretty cool-scenic river, great museums for a medium city, lovely opera house. Great sausages too, though likely not gluten-free.
Have a great weekend, Buzz.

I keep seeing the all the blogs push the Hyatt Globalist promotion as basically a no-brainer and I nearly talked myself into it before recognizing reality is actually the no-brainer (at least for me). Having thought a lot about this, I would genuinely be interested in others thoughts here, both for their specific scenario and mine:
In my case to get Globalist I would need to book 12 nights: 12 * 2 + 5 for holding the credit card = 29; then assume I figure out something for the remaining 1 night. But I’m just using the cost of the 12 nights for my thought exercise. I actually could do the essentially ideal scenario of booking the nights at a Cat. 1 property, thus 45k points after the promotional rebate. To even be more generous the hotel I would be booking is eligible for the new hotel promo for 500 bonus points a night, so I would earn 6,000 points bringing my net down to 39k cost.
On top of that, hitting the 30 nights would yield me a Cat. 1-4 certificate for the milestone reward. I could talk myself into calling that a wash with needing the one additional night; but for my purposes I’ll continue to be generous and lop that off the top of my cost – let’s say 10k points so now we’re down to a net of 29k cost.
I’ll use 1.5 cents per point as a valuation based on that I would need to transfer over from Chase UR and I could otherwise pay myself back at that rate, so grand total cost = $435. Now, would I get $435 in value out of Hyatt Globalist till February 2023? Maybe? But is maybe good enough to pre pay for stuff I don’t know I’ll get to enjoy?
Personally, eating the food of a new city is huge part of my travel so hotel eggs benedict and lounge snacks just aren’t moving the needle that much for me. And upgrades are nice, but again who is traveling to sit in the hotel room?
Talk me off the ledge, or back onto the ledge here.
TBBTheDude says
Your rationale is very similar to mine. I am going back and forth…leaning towards it though because hopefully the Athens Marathon in November 2020 will be held and targeting to camp out at the Presidential suite in that new Grand Hyatt…assuming it is still open. And then we have 2022…
Also, I was never a Globalist so I need to finally achieve this for my career lol.
I understand if you go either way though 🙂

Phew!! I think this week’s edition wins for the most articles I wanna read right now! Too much good stuff! No, not too much, just gonna take a couple days to digest. Thanks very much as always and take care of those legs and all. Injuries are sometimes just very time-consuming to get past.
You are very right about the points thing not being exciting right now. I finally got offered (Yes!! Offered!) the Amex Biz Plat! But…. 15k spend in 90 days? When I can’t go anywhere I want to (or just won’t go) plus the $595? Nah.
Been hitting the Amazon Prime card like mad since I got that lovely promotion of at least 4 points per dollar on everything. Xmas has been easy to buy with points! Best usage? No, but enjoyable and right now, anything enjoyable is good. There’s been a lot of tough stuff to deal with lately and anything to lighten the load is good. Not to mention that earlier this year, getting shot down on Apps 3 out of 4 times made me realize it might be time to just sit back and work the cards I have!
As @Bill seems to say, the whole question of a mattress run seems iffy. I’ve never been one to care that much other than my room be clean and there be hot water. When I go somewhere, I want to be OUT of the room except as needed. But yet, 3 “Free Nights” are gonna expire end of January if I do not make myself go *somewhere*.
The vaccines cannot get out fast enough for me because I will get one first chance I get!
Thanks as always for the fantastic blog posting! High point of my email week!

@CP, you haven’t been hitting that AZMN card hard enough. TBB only made 20 cents yesterday. As a Japanese lady told me during a business meeting in Tokyo, that’s penis (she meant to say peanuts). I realized why most foreign companies have an agency representing them in JP.

The extra 4 points in on spend ANYWHERE. Sadly, that doesn’t help TBB, just me. But it gives me something to chase instead of new credit card bonuses for a while because I was getting tired of being denied on card apps earlier this year.

Thanks for another great post Buzz. Still waiting for the Delphi pics, how long can this go on?
The Hyatt offers are very tempting, but seeing as most hospitals will be full in January…tough to justify, not to mention the fact that simply being out and about only serves to recirculate the virus.
I have to agree with Carl, exceptional amount of great articles for this weekend.
Have a great weekend and my best to the family Buzz!

With all the sparks (I won’t say buzz) from Hyatt today, I’d like to put in a good word for Hilton. I’m a gold member and had 2 award nights booked in Waikiki last week – had to cancel them when I started quarantine at my main location (Covid test results arrived late). By the time I got to call them, it was after the 3pm cutoff, but they didn’t charge me anything and refunded my points.
TBBTheDude says
That is great. My family is really still fond of Hiltons…But those days in the Big Island Waikoloa village spending 100k HH points for 5 or 6 days are long gone 🙂 That property remains special because it was the first time my son managed to swim across the pool with no floaties…he was so proud of himself he did it all alone…we all remember that moment! Thanks….Amex 🙂

Ok, shoot down my Globalist aspirations:
Current cardholder: 5 elite nights
Will spend $15k for the free night which will give me another 6 elite nights (2 per $5k)
Need 19 more elite nights.
Do 10 nights at Category 1 at 5k pts per night for 50,000 points. Will get rebated 25% of the 50k points, so 12,500. Final cost 37,500.
I doubt any of the Category 1 properties in SE Michigan are newer properties to get 500 points per night but is there a way to check?
I may go there to work during the day to get out of the house. With mask. Maybe take breakfast to go 🙂 But not sleeping there…it is the air you know…
Holes? I do plan to stay at Hyatts later in 2021 and am going to sure make epic plans for 2022 to Globalize myself to the max lol.
Not a blogger says
Sounds legit. How much spend are you willing to do? I’m planning on getting globalist purely from MS. $60K of spend would cost me about $420, and for that I get globalist + 2 free nights + 60,000 points. Not a bad haul.
TBBTheDude says
The $15k of spend I plan to do is…organic. Likely shift/prepay some business expenses. I guess I could accelerate it but I think the Simon Mall gc to Kroger option is dead or mostly dead? May take a little while to get there but…I am not going anywhere before June anyway 🙂
420…coincidence? 🙂
Not a blogger says
When is your Hyatt card’s anniversary date? Are you going to be able to get the double free night this year? If so, that’ll be $30k of spending instead of $15K.
TBBTheDude says
I was going to focus on it starting early thinking that the Hyatt change in how it handles the free night was now, as in 2020/2021….Not 2021/22. So my card anniversary is September so no rush for me to knock off $15k early in the year as the Free Night cert is effective 12 months from when the 15k is completed. I am also assuming I am not going anywhere before June, so no rush. I just need to do the 10 nights in a HP Category 1 in Jan/Feb. I have 5 booked already in a local HP and easily I can burn another 25k for another 5 nights (25% of these points to be rebated of course).
I may even go for another 15k between Sept-Dec 2021 for a 2nd free night then…I guess that is some time away. At this rate I am getting concerned the time involved to book all these one nighters you guys…I may have to call in for help 🙂
and I am not even thinking about any milestone north of 30…yet.

The soccer schedule is absolutely packed. The best players will be worn by the time EC starts. There was no time to rest in the late summer after the season ended. And CL and EL followed the regular season. And now you have a compact spring schedule. And WC 2022 qualifiers were added March-Sept 2021.
We can’t expect to see the best players in the 2020 European Championship next summer. Maybe there will be a few surprise teams making it to the WC. Greece may get a draw against Spain? I will be cheering for Iceland in the WC!

Yeah, you are right. Super packed…but maybe the virus contributes to spacing them out a bit 🙂
I am definitely not making any plans to visit Qatar to see Greece in the World Cup in 2022. Spain and Sweden in the group…ouch.
Iceland may have had its best run, no one is sneaking up on them any more…

Greece will probably have negative interest rates before making it to the WC. Remember that Greek/PIGS drama a decade ago? Blame the Germans!

Thanks for $3.12 with Amazon yesterday. Still looking for a second credit card conversion this month…WTF!
This Friday’s post will be EPIC! I need to move on and find another hobby…this is so downright demoralizing when I see so few clicks…I think prisoners make more per hour smh.
Another day, another day closer to the vaccines and away from clinically insane Trump…

$1.54 yesterday off Amazon.
Maybe I should stop checking every morning. And kill my credit card affiliate links for good, nobody is buying!
To aspiring new bloggers: STAY THE FUCK AWAY, find something else to do with your time!
Enjoy tomorrow’s post, it is shaping up to be EPIC. Going to go out on top #winning

Are there no cushy Amazon bounties you can push in the US?
For eg, in the UK Amazon is giving people £60 off their next £200 order if they sign up for Amazon Business for free. This is not exactly a hard sell yet Amazon pays me £25 per person.

I should probably take a look but I always have so many to read articles in the queue…
My priorities need to be readjusted 🙂
EPIC post tomorrow…going to go out with a bang. On top. In my own delusional mind lol.

Is AMZN crushing it in the UK as well?
How are brick and mortar retail stores doing? Will Oxford street be the same?
