Let’s go on a wild ride through some pretty good blog posts on ANA miles and Avios, learn more about Evolve Money, buying $500 gift cards with Amex cards, attempt to keep sane while trying to find low level Delta awards, pimp my own and Mile Nerd’s ebates links, take note of the bank reconsideration phone numbers, learn about hotel loyalty programs, and travel through some incredible nature and World War I photos and end with some funny stuff as always.
I apologize for not ignoring the resident blog troll. Please do so. And for Pete’s sake (can anyone tell me who the hell is Pete anyway!) do not post hundreds of comments in a blog you despise when you are retired, most would certainly not recommend it ๐
TBB Blog Mission: To Entertain. Educate. Inspire. In That Order
You can support TBB by clicking/forwarding any of our Referral Links and starting your online shopping at our Amazon affiliate link . Or click on the Amazon Banner on the right, thank YOU!
This is going to be pretty long, some pretty good stuff in the blogosphere when you clear through all the “click my link” pimping posts that never stop…
Travel is Free with a superb “Guide to ANA Miles“. And check out the comments for important info complementing the post. And only had one short blog post with the link to the Chase credit cards. Just ONE when others have gone totally on pimp mode with Chase Ink card selling. I want these talented bloggers who add value to my life and hobby to succeed damn it! If you haven’t noticed I have a special (non-angry) and strong distaste for businesses treating me like a number and selling me non stop…especially when they are not as well qualified! And let’s clear something up so it does not get asked over and over again in the comments. The name of the Travel is Free blogger is Drew. If you ask it again…I am banning you lol.
22 Things to Keep in Mind when Using Avios. By DansDeals. Fantastic post, I always learn something. Yeah, I realize DD has always been on the pumpy cc side but he redeems himself for posts like that and I let it slide…most of the time. But dude, how come you are not directing your readers to a portal for the gift cards from Staples, come on! Yellow card. Is that a Staples affiliate link? Anyone know how I can get one and add it to my Amazon link to double my own pimping ๐
Hack My Trip shared his FTU Presentation “Which Hotel Loyalty Program is Right for You”
Great review of Evolve Money by Doctor of Credit.
How to Buy $500 Visa gift cards online with Amex gift cards. By Frequent Miler. Why am I linking FM here when I assume everyone reads him? ๐
How to Book Low Level Delta Awards (without going crazy). By Milenomics. At first I thought the title was funny until I read the crazy part and smiled. For everyone wanting to achieve this, good luck and you may benefit from this post.
I saw Mile Nerd do it so here is my Ebates referral link that could earn you $5 and earn me up to $75 if just three of you sign up by 6/30/14 AND spend $25 shopping with this excellent portal in the first year after signup. If you like Mile Nerd (and you should) here is his referral link. This promo goes to 6/30/14 so hurrrrrryyyyyyyyyy ๐ย All profits from this amazingly lucrative promotion will most likely be spent on coffee and greek salads. Sorry for the intrusion. I need some income here to justify my new Ink Bold card ๐ย While at it, here are all the bank reconsideration numbers courtesy of Mile Nerd. Ask you favorite credit card salesman to post these numbers in each credit card post ๐
View from the Wing is vacationing in the Maldives (naturally) so the number of Chase pump posts has increased substantially. But that is not what bothered me the most. I thought posting pictures of a few couples (with faces concealed) playing with their phones was just wrong. I saved this blog entry in my Feedly to make a comment. I just did. Let’s move on. Update: Got this response on Twitter: @garyleff: Yep, got that! Many readers had a strong reaction, definitely made me question the post. And then I also noticed he is back with industry commentary so I may give him some time to repent ๐
I can not figure out Wallet Slot blog. We have a turn from credit card pumping only to be told about a certain way to get in lounges for free by asking others to allow you in. A reader promptly alerted me about the recent Lifehacker article promoting this. Shaking my head. In another post, it ends with “Please Tweet me the Number of Credit Cards that you have in your wallet @WalletSlot”.ย What????????????????
The founder of the Frugal Travel Guy continues to troll my site. In WordPress, it logs in how many posts each commenter has and ingy shows 343. This does not include how many times he has posted as Anonymous or other handles. Just stating a fact and it may help some other blogger there identify your biggest fans. Never leave an educational moment go to waste here at TBB. And be kind and gentle.
This just in. I saw this website in a very old thread in FlyerTalk. RewardFlyer. They claim they do award booking for you AFTER you apply for credit cards through them. Hmm, interesting. Somehow, you need to get the miles posted FIRST and redo the search, good luck as you may need it! It is 11.30 pm on Tuesday night and my eyes have been so assaulted by Ink credit card links the past two days so I leave it up to you. Curious if anyone has direct experience? I like that we finally see some innovation and competition in this murky space! I am NOT recommending the site, just to be clear. I just learned of it. Anyone?
Ok, one more as this is so amazingly inspiring I am just speecheless. Kevin Durant’s speech accepting the MVP Award.
Nature is one crazy mother fudger! Yes indeed!
This is a MUST read. ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE pictures from World War I. Yes, not II but I, wow! By The Atlantic. I had the most difficult time to pick one, you must check them out. You’re welcome, click on my link:-)
Europe According to the French:
Here is how it is flying with the Thunderbirds. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Fascinating account. And AMAZING VIDEO! I could make a separate post about this but I won’t. Now I am curious to find out in how many other blogs it shows up without linking back to me hehe.
Amateurs vs Professionals. I know many of you can do it all but as a bit of an expert (so they say) I smiled after reading this, so true so true ๐
Some trip reports just bore the hell out of me. I am sure mine bore you too ๐

I guess that day is near by. Your blog is definitely original and rich in content and i have benefited from its contents and the way they are written.
Kumar says
I am amazed by Travel is Free Drew. Other than not pimping cards, note that he doesn’t have a full time job (from his website) and mentions that he is content with what he gets from the blog. And his sharing of ideas are nothing short of brilliance. He is giving so much to the flyers in terms of content and he is content with his income sources (pun intended). This guy has earned my full respect and I am sure he will not do anything just for clicks or money. Keep it up, Drew. You are truly one of a kind. And he doesn’t continue to brag in his blog that no one clicks his links:) I didn’t mean anyone specifically:) This time my iPhone keypad is just not listening to my mind:)

George, It is with great humility and purpose I accept your nomination as “Resident Troll” of TablodBloggerBuzz. I promise to faithfully execute my duties of “keeping it real without whining” and reminding all that slamming and demeaning others serves no positive purpose and has obviously shown no effect on changing the way bloggers conduct their own blog business.
I will continue to call for personal accountability when engaging in credit card activity and Freedom of Choice of who links to use without interference or coercion by outside forces that deem to know whats best, yet practice so many of the same activities that they “call out” in their efforts.
It is with great honor I accept and agree to take on this appointment so help me Blue Ink
And as I accept this great honor and challenge, I will repeat for today’s eyeballs:
Are you obsessed with me George? Did you actually go back and figure how many times I commented? You need to be spending more time taking care of your clients George. They are your fiduciary duty.
My numbers of comments are:
less than the number of times you whine about how tough blogging is
less than the number of times you threaten to get links and show us how it all should be done
less than the number of times you criticize others while being a long way from, perfect yourself
less than the times you pimp that Amazon link.
Far less than the number of times your readers comment with outstanding content like, First, Second, Third
And lastly, less than the number of times you talk about quitting but never do.
Talk about regurgitating content. You do it almost every single day.
Why not do us a favor and try something new like just complimenting the good work people do and ignoring the bad? If you look for the positive, youโll find it everywhere.
William Charles says
“Are you obsessed with me George? Did you actually go back and figure how many times I commented?”
It shows up in the comments dashboard. He even told you that in the post.
Kryton says
Lol Ingy, you would love it if we ignored the bad right? Bad bloggers like you were? I feel pity for you. You obviously spend hours of your time here trolling George, yet pretend that this is “seconds out of the day”.
Get a life, stop trolling, If you were a good blogger and supported good blogging practices, you wouldn’t have had the need to come and defend yourself or the shitty blogs including FTG.
You say George has no impact on how others blog? Are you ignoring Saverocity and FrequentMiler who are awesome bloggers and have taken criticisms well and made positive improvements in how they blog?
Kumar says
Looking from a pure reader perspective, I think George is doing an excellent job overall in the travel blogging place. I can’t think of any other person who could criticize constructively with tons of original humour. I love reading this blog just for that. If George stops his humour lined criticisms, the entire travel blog world will lose. I have nothing against anyone personally but this site is healthy for the entire travel community and has to survive long, in my opinion.

@TBB, are you looking at the name INGY or the IP address? You should be able to click the IP address link and view all comments made from that address. I think you will win the Amazon affiliate contest this month, I’m only at $2.99 so far ๐
Kumar says
There seem to be good contest on the amazon links I guess now that FQF has also added to his website. Come on bloggers you need to come up some other ideas rather than just relying on amazon. How much can I spend on amazon with so many favorite bloggers competing for a click? That beats the purpose of frugal collection of points.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Always open to ideas and feedback. ANY feedback.
Kumar says
Paypal subscriptions from willing participants or some other mile earning monthly subscriptions??. I also see that frequent miler has tied up with some companies like Amex to add a captcha whenever a person posts a comment – may be this is bringing revenue. You may try this with amazon, staples??. May be you should ask those sites that you name under Blogs I love and Blogs I like to pay you something whenever someone clicks it from your website??:) – just thinking out loud. Or write a ebook? Hah, short of ideas – i dont own a blog:(
William Charles says
You could do eBay as well, the affiliate program anybody can join. Tell people about eBay bucks (a lot of people still don’t seem to use it) and you’re providing a little reader value as well!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Thanks a lot for the feedback.
I may joke around about the money guys but let’s face it. I am not hurting for money at all. And I really don’t think about money off TBB, if I did I would have gone the cc route by now (even for my wife’s apps alone!)l. I am focusing on delivering a quality product, having a good time doing it and improving my dear hobby and changing the world. It’s all about the mission: Entertainment. Education. Inspiration ๐ The rest will take care of themselves.
I am not doing subscriptions, it feels like begging to me. I am not a full timer, this blogging thing does not put food in my family’s table. There is no money in the captcha commenting system I don’t think. Staples & eBay seem more trouble than they are worth. Amazon brings in enough to cover my small costs for now.
I get to deal with two things I am passionate for, all goals are on track, I am healthy (especially after losing 20 lbs!), have a beautiful family and more readers than just “friends and family”. I am grateful for everything.
I hope to meet as many of you as possible down in Charlotte.

Hey Boss, Just checking in after my first day on the job. A really calm day here on the tabloid. The only individual that got criticized was me and as RT, I’m used to it. Its part of the job description.
And don’t worry about my compensation yet and the Defined Benefit plan you may need to put me it. I gotta get clearance from IB and make sure I’m not violating the non compete you kjnow.
So just one quick question tonight. I just want to make sure I’ve got your position on the banks nailed down.
Are we “Angry” at them for offering credit cards to the general public where some people are obviously not capable of handling the responsibility and don’t have the personal accountability.
OR
Are we “Grateful” that the banks put out such great offers so all of us in the hobby can travel so cheaply using the sign up bonuses?
New on the job and just want to make sure I’ve got your position right boss ๐
PS Timecard 6 minutes to write the acceptance of your nomination this morning. Two minutes check in this afternoon (nothing of substance to report and six minutes this evening reporting in. Fourteen minutes on the clock boss. Some of your readers sure can exaggerate on time it takes to do the job.
See ya tomorrow.

So I imagine you’ve seen the OMAT spectacle by now. I actually don’t mind this, think it’s kind of brilliant actually.
But I thought comment #8 by DBest is priceless, “Having just used one of your affiliate links I think Iโve already donated to the blog, but will chip in $5 if you dress like that MileValue kid during the flight โ flip flops, shorts, hoodie, etc.”
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Yep, I saw it as a reader alerted me to the Kickstarter angle.
The marketing of it is indeed brilliant. The thing is:
1) If he burned miles (assuming it was available) it would be an obscene amount. He would get shit for it.
2) If he paid for it (which undoubtedly he can easily do) he would get shit for it.
So, he gets others to pay for it and market all the angles to death. So, thumbs up for thinking about it.
But I more identified with comment # 165 ๐
You are all a bunch of nitwits. Contributing to a useless cause like this. How about giving money to people who really need it. Fucking excess driven twats.

Somewhere in Miami beach, TPG is kicking himself (and probably his “director of operations”) for not coming up with this idea first.
adam says
There’s a reason both Lucky and TPG will be using Florida as their residence this year: no income tax.
Grant says
This route will start Jan 15, 2015 and go from LHR-AUH. Prices are around 12,000+ GBP or 2.3 million Etihad miles and 184 GBP.
Raffles says
That makes no sense price wise. A standard F ticket to London is only 5 per cent of that mileage but at least 50 per cent of the price quoted.
Tara says
Well he has balls, I’ll give him that. Can’t say his supporters have brains. Seriously, 6 people have donated $500 towards an excessively luxurious 7.5 hour flight flight which isn’t even being taken to get to a destination? What’s next, a fundraiser to buy Paris Hilton a new pair of Manolo Blahniks?
I can see supporting someone who needs a flight to get home to their dying grandmother or something like that. I wish I could get those people with too much money to support conservation projects.

More than one Erik says
Interesting, the Erik @ 8:22pm is not the same Erik that posted earlier in the day at 8:28am (me). I think people are being a little hard on Ben. I mean, one of the primary focus points of his blog is reviewing first class travel. I think it is safe to assume that some portion of his audience (or page views from search engines) are people who can actually afford to fly these products. If his readership decides to contribute to his trip to get content in return (and it better be the mother of all trip reports ๐ ), so be it. For the record, I will not be contributing. Whining that the money should instead be donated to just smacks a little bit of jealousy. People waste money on all kinds of things – Las Vegas is the perfect example. The contributors would have likely spent the money on something else and it is false to assume that they redirected 100% of the funds away from poor starving kids. Perhaps what Ben can do, if he succeeds, is donate the Etihad miles to a charity that could use them for travel – maybe “Doctors Without Borders”? BTW, if Etihad were smart, someone in their marketing department would anonymously donate to KIckstarter – it would be the perfect viral marketing vehicle. Seriously, if Ben pulls it off, that trip report will be broadcast all over the blogosphere and perhaps even get picked up by the mainstream media. If your heart is really bleeding, why not start a Kickstarter campaign for a charity to match the same amount of money that Ben requested? Issue a challenge to all blog readers to donate if they feel offended by OMAAT’s campaign and see who wins.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
You make a lot of great points. This thing has dominated the blogosphere today and if I had time I will make it a separate blog post. But I don’t think I can pull it off. The kid is smart, no doubt.
I will have more to say on this in tomorrow’s TBB Buzz post. I think it will be entertaining. I am more disturbed by GL’s blog post with such a mean headline.
Your point about Etihad is fantastic, I was thinking the same thing!
TWA44 says
@Tara – loved your comment – I just find the whole idea of traveling that way appalling and so unnecessary.

I am debating which kickstarter is more ridiculous. The guy who raised something like $1,000 to do some burrito research or potentially raising 25k to take a single flight.
Raffles says
I was going to have a go at Ben but I read his post and, to be honest, he is approaching it with the right spirit.
I am less happy that he pretends this is a huge amount of cash for him, when in reality it is 2 weeks income at a guess. If he admitted that, of course, he would be in trouble .
ABC says
If he first would have raised $25k for a good cause, I wouldn’t have found this to be among the sadest moment in this blog space. Perhaps a new way of “giving back to the community” in the wrong direction!
I have never attended a “DO” and when I see behavior like this i wonder if “they (OMAAT supporters of this effort)” are outliers or a major part of this community.
It's me says
I think they are more like a groupie then anything else. It’s is just so phony and cheesy and immature. I think Delta Points jumped on so he can increase traffic to his site.
Ramsey says
@Raffles, don’t let his fake humility fool you. What kind of person would go public with this kind of selfishness. Give the money he raises to some people living under a bridge and eating out of dumpsters. I’m more upset with the idiots who gave him any dough like william charles aka doctor of credit, comments on everybody’s site to publicize his own.
TravelBloggerBuzz says

I think Raffles is on it…the whole fake pretending thing that this is a lot of cash for him. COME ON!
ingy says
Hey Boss. Well the Wine-O-Meter really went on tilt when Ben came up with a pretty clever idea.
Sure seems funny to me that people with obvious disposable income are being chastised for doing what they want with “obvious disposable income” It is gonna be a vicious couple days here boss. Slamming and stabbing at fellow hobbyist who, of their own free will, decided to help Ben with as you call it a brilliant marketing idea.
But hey: Winners are gonna laugh and tell jokes and losers are gonna piss and moan I say. Have fun in Charlotte boss. Sorry I can’t go,. but I had an opposing view ๐
3 minutes boss
Matt says
When you say ‘winners’ are going to laugh and losers are going to ‘piss and moan’ you are referring to the game of selfishly pocketing money at the expense of people you claim to be your audience VS trying to do right by them. The people who seek to do right don’t pocket the money, therefore are ‘losers who piss and moan’ to you.
You aren’t coming to CLT because you act in an overly unpredictable manner, and are bullying and condescending in the interactions I have seen. Other guests have expressed a desire to cancel tickets if you attend because of this, and I don’t want to have to monitor your performance in person as I will be too busy keeping things flowing smoothly to babysit you.
It has nothing to do with an opposing view. I love a debate, it is really about you personally.
ingy says
Funny thing Matt, in seven years of blogging nobody EVER complained about being taken advantage of. We taught them all well how to bump the bonus and people have a lot more personal self respect than you give them credit for. If a blogger offers less than the best deal it is their choice to continue or not or to use their links and read their blog.
Oh come on Matt cut the bullshit. Why not just try to be honest for a change? You want to be the Big Dog and you will be regardless if I’m there or not. I was hoping to catch up with MM and maybe learn a thing or to. You know as well as I do that I am no threat to you and your program. Hell I’m a 63 year old man that has been in this space for years without incident. I did love your attempted threat of removing me physically.
When people can’t stand being called out for suggesting different opinions, it signals fear to many. You became a nobody to me when you cancelled my ticket. And your event became a seminar of the angries. But I hope you all have fun.
Matt from Saverocity says
In seven years of blogging nobody knew better, now buzz sheds the light on your habits and you hate it.

I saw FTG posted an attaboy for Ben’s money raising on FT. Being the big hitter he is, I imagine he put his money where his posts are and tossed at least a grand to the kid.
Steve says
I have no problem with Lucky trying to get a free flight on Etihad, but for the love of god his faux-innocent “I don’t expect to get it, but just for kicks” post was nauseating.
He should’ve just left it at he wants to fly that product, has a large following and will see if that following is large and dedicated enough to fund his trip.
“I know this will totally not happen. But a few people talked about it and i figured it would be funny. But I know it’s not going to happen anyways. I mean it would be crazy if it did, but I know it won’t. I’m just doing this for comedic purposes. But yeah, I know that no one would waste their money funding this. That’s crazy. No one is required to do this, but here’s the link. But I’m not expecting it”
Steve says
Since TPG has neither creativity nor shame, I doubt he’ll have any qualms about trying to copy what Lucky did and being far more shameless about it. Or just buy the ticket himself since he can’t help but brag about his wealth on his blog.
Did you know he’s 6’7″?
james says
He has a dog, too?

Credit Card Salesman Gary is harsher on AA for tweets about Ben’s Kickstart than he was about AA cutting off Explorer Awards and stopovers.
I’ll bet $10 Ben and Gary hatched Ben’s adventure and there’s more to this than has been revealed.
Still waiting for FTG’s report on his contribution to Ben beyond moral support.
Steve says
It was a dick post, and just to clarify what you wrote, it wasn’t even AA who tweeted it
It was someone who works for AA tweeting from her private account – an account she makes clear on her twitter home page is her views only and not the views of AA
And it’s not even like her views are that crazy. You would think based on Gary’s reaction that she was supporting the North Korean regime or something. Her view was entirely valid and perfectly in line with the majority of people who expressed their opinion on the matter
Apparently, taking pictures of other people vacationing or lounging on a plane isn’t enough
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I think you both nailed it. Other than hatching it together.

Woke up to a tempest on twitter about the AA spokesperson’s tweet about Lucky’s ridiculousness. Absurd. Although there are some real issues about expressing personal (vs. job-related) viewpoints that are worth discussing.
