Award Booking Sweet Spot: Florida using Avios. By Miles4More. That’s it, I am moving to Miami and focus on Avios π
The new blog at Saverocity looks fantastic. The American Travel Project. And very well written too. Welcome aboard and do not let anyone bully you π
As I was saying I am not terribly excited by the current credit card signing bonuses, here comes the United MileagePlus Explorer Visa card that comes with 50,000 United miles after $2k in spend in the first 3 months, another 5k United miles when you add an authorized user while applying, other goodies and no annual fee for the first year! I mean, what else do you want, this is like giving away free travel! If you carry balances on your credit cards please leave right NOW, this is not for you! More on the douche baggy practices about the selling of this credit card by your favorite bloggers in the Blog Buzz section below.

The Flight Deal is three years old, wow! It is one of the few places on the web TBB loves.
Summer Solstice in Alaska: Incredibly beautiful video. At The Adventure Blog.

The intricate and beautiful design inside Iran’s magnificent temples. At The Daily Mail. For some reason some of this reminds me college and trips I took. I miss college π
ODDZ & ENDZ
Excellent article on diversification (in investing). Love this quote in the end: “Just remember β diversifying is the easy part; rebalancing takes discipline.”
22 Of The Most Epic Product Fails in History. I had no idea Cosmopolitan had launched its own version of yogurt, WTF! And JooJoo lol.
I read an article recently about some financial advisers acting as travel concierges. Wait a minute, I have been doing that (with a few clients…you know the ones with the right mindset to succeed in this) for years! I always take the long term approach instead of maximizing short term profits becoming a pest on people pushing them the same stuff day in day out.
Speaking of pushing stuff day in and day out, if you never gave any money to a political candidate, don’t do it! Or give cash anonymously (I know, I know… no miles!). But if you do, prepare for an onslaught of emails (primarily) and even snail mail and phone calls. It is TOTALLY ridiculous and I have so regretted doing this. They are even more pushy than the blogs in the TBB Ignore list…imagine that!
BLOG BUZZ
Chase decided to play some more mind games to keep their legions of credit card salesmen in line. The bank let them have an affiliate credit card offer for the United Mileage Plus Explorer card and then a few hours later came up with an even better non affiliate offer for the same card. Personal Finance Digest wrote about it here: Chase screwed over its affiliate marketers yesterday
I mean what else can you say about what matters these days:
For you “miles/points” blogger who pushed the inferior offer and did not come back to let your readers know about the better offer…there are two explanations: 1) You are a douche bag 2) You are clueless and you should not be blogging about miles and points! The resident troll ingy (founder and current writer and brand face of Frugal Travel Guy the blog) thinks I am doing terrible things to the hobby. I say such practices are WRONG and am bringing attention to it because I like to think it is making a difference. I was a dreamer and appears I still am!
MilesAbound is a little angry (I totally understand by the way) in his Who doesnβt love a new month? Happy August! With some good advice on what to do in the beginning of the month before he annihilates what the selfish pumping bloggers do for the most ridiculous reasons to sell the Chase Sapphire credit card on the First Friday of each month for just 3x points. View from the Wing even won an award for pumping not only that card but the Citi card too in the same post! (one was not enough????) Hey readers DON’T SUPPORT THESE PUMPERS ANYMORE. START A REVOLUTION! HELL NO WE WON’T GO CLICK ON YOUR CREDIT CARD LINKS (too bad it does not rhyme but I tried lol)
Delta Points is giving away crap all week. Do people really enter to win Delta Points luggage tags and phone holders and T-shirts, seriously?
View from the Wing continues to get bizarre. I am not talking about the turn to mega credit card pumping ways. But some posts are so bizarre and so…out there I am starting to wonder…Like the post: “ThisΒ Is The One Flight I Fear Taking the Most β And You Should, Too”. Hey talk about a headline that hooks you!Β Instead, it was about the absolute terror feeling you get when you…may not be hydrated enough…the horror, the horror.
That mainstream big blog that is in Boarding Area, Travel Skills, all of a sudden became an authority on credit cards too! Pumped the inferior version of the UA card and this one I am afraid belongs in the second category outlined above. I got a binder full of experts…
Frugal Travel Guy (the blog) has this incredible filler content. They pay readers $25 to send in a few paragraphs for the “Reader Success” section, slap lipstick affiliate credit card links to the pig blog post and they sit back and work on more templates to sell more credit cards! Shaking my head. I can be pumping these for eternity and could insert the credit card mentions seven at a time but I bet you they will still pay $25 when they earn up to hundreds from each credit card their clueless readers click on.Β And then you have bloggers like Travel is Free doing this slick map/infographic thingie that maps all the IHG Rewards hotels in the world. Who would you rather support?
This is why TBB does NOT use templates!

Oh the world of templates. Came up with a good idea about it.

I love reading travel blogs. Almost of any kind really. Like taking a mental vacation. Daydreaming about here or there. Rudy Maxa, Rich Steves, Huffpo travel, almost anything really.
I discovered TBB a while ago but truly didn’t notice until Dia came out with the Vendoming post. I found a new friend (Dia) that day. And a kindred spirit- TBB. I don’t always agree with you, but I’m from Michigan so I get your nuances. LOL I live elsewhere now, though….
I always feel wanted and welcome reading Dia’s blog.
Anyhow. Everyone has their “line in the sand”, the one thing that annoys them. Me? It’s people that travel to Paris or elsewhere in France and don’t get it. And by it, I mean the people, culture, history, etc. That’s my pet peeve. If they don’t get Paris, then how am I supposed to trust them with their other posts? How do I know that the information they write is correct? How do I trust their opinion on hotels, etc. if they never venture out to eat breakfast from the PHV?
And Gary, despite his expertise, annoys me. My opinion, for what it’s worth. I feel as if he is more tourist than traveler. Nothing wrong with that. I’m both; sometimes both at the same time. Why not? It just seems as if his blog is written for experts but with a tourist point of view. It just seems…off. Meh. Whatever, right? He gets paid to travel and I don’t. However, I feel like he’s sitting on this throne, passing judgement on things he knows nothing about. And he doesn’t get Paris, either! Which really, really annoys me.
I like reading Plucky’s blog. For some reason, it doesn’t annoy me like the others. Even his kickstarter thing. Because it amused me that someone had the balls to do it. Also, why didn’t I think of it first? LOL I just see him as this kid, roaming the planet…sometimes getting into trouble for things he should know better about. Sometimes finding treasure in places I’d ignore. I think I like his blog because I don’t view him as an expert or this all-knowing traveler. I see him as this kid, going around places…In my head, he’s the guy that reads other people’s postcards and opens up their medicine cabinets, touches the marble statues that he’s not supposed to, peering around private doors… I guess he doesn’t annoy me because he’s just so enthusiastic about things. He knows he doesn’t know everything. I wish he’d explore more of the places he’s visiting. Eventually, he will get tired of the journey and focus on the destinations. It will happen. He’s too curious to be satisfied with only doing what he’s doing know in life.
I like Mommy Points too. I know, A LOT of links in her blog. But if one delves deeper, there’s a lot of content too. And I get the feeling that she really wants families to enjoy seeing the world together. It’s kind of like watching “Meet the Browns”- you’ve got to ignore the neon pants to get to the storyline.
Oh, TBB- I agree. That if someone crosses over from blogger to entrepreneur with their blogs…they have a responsibility to their readers to get it right. If you take take on that challenge, going from opinion to fact, then one does owe it to the reader to do the correct research and present it the best way possible to the reader.
I don’t understand this whole rude, crude, etc. comment from your frenemeny.
Yea, sometimes commentary is outrageous, but so? At least it’s thought provoking. I’ve learned much about the travel world I did not know about. I’ve discovered my personal limitations. I find that to be a good thing.
Please tell the Ingy chap that travel is about finding things in common- but it is also finding things that are different. There should be more opinions about traveling not less; especially on finding ways to travel for “free”. I’ve earned free hotel nights. I like the idea of free 1st class travel. But I certainly do not want 7 credit cards. I don’t want to run around town doing MS. I want something in-between. That’s hard to find. I don’t care to travel to the Maldives. A simple but clean hotel room is good. I don’t need free breakfast or room service. I just want to go places. And I want to be able to afford to go to the places that I want to travel and not wind up in debt. These are the kind of travel blogs that I try to find but are difficult to locate. I want to travel on my terms. Stay at the places I want to stay. I don’t want to change the hotel 4 times in one week because of mileage or points earning. I don’t want to be a puppet to travel – it’s a priviledge. It shouldn’t become a chore.
And I feel like people are mistaking SNARK for other adjectives, verbs, and nouns. Some people just don’t understand the definition of snark, I suppose.

Txs for the mention, George! After all, I am the BA ROCKSTAR!
Also, u mentioning me saves my finger a bit so I can stop hitting refresh on my blog all day while flying around the US to go no where. I mean, if I didn’t refresh my own blog, there is no way my blog increases month after month! :giggles:

@ United1k: Historic day for you and TBB blog π
@ Kirsten: I separate my life as pre TBB and after TBB. Pre TBB used to be a lot more laid back…not anymore. And all that for a few Amazon clicks a day. If my therapist was not around I would have folded this baby months ago. Waiting to hear on how much I can expect per referral π
@TheSterlingTraveler: I have seen the future…and it is plastics, err, templates!
@ icicle: Wow, thanks for posting and the thoughtful comment! I agree with most of what you say. Here are some snarky comments on what you said:
I cover more the miles/points blogs than travel blogs. Travel blogs are A LOT MORE OUT THERE. It is really impossible to cover them all! I try to find a few good ones here and there but my focus is the miles/points blogs. Sadly, the miles/points travel blogs have veered down a path towards becoming credit card sales blogs. And it is much easier to sell them while focusing on luxury travel. It also goes to the head of the particular blogger who does this and gradually lose touch of the real world and its conditions that most of us live in! Dia is down to earth. Difficult to stay down to earth when your “:Top 10 credit card” posts bring in hundreds of thousands of dollars. Gary is beyond the phase of pissing me off by now. I can’ take another high end toilet pic from Plucky! Talk about them being in a bubble until they come down for…another Top 10 Chase credit card post or some other ridiculous way to sell more cards. Eeeek. Mommy Points seems more genuine, kids have a tendency to bring/prevent you from that bubble thing I guess. But, like I said, what annoys me is blogging in such a biased way to sell more credit cards. At least she had the guts to do posts on Spirit π Oh, I think Gary would take a picture of that medicine cabinet and post it online π I am waiting for resident troll to jump in calling me names when I am just being a little snarky as always. If I had a business making hundreds of thousands of dollars it would not bother me one bit if people made some fun of me…cost of doing business!!!! TBB is all about thought provoking and outrageous commentary π Don’t worry about ingy, talk about living in a bubble, in denial and complete lack of common sense. He is part of the entertainment. I was going to post the youtube video of him and Howie selling the Chase Ink cards but it was taken down! One day I will post the SPG sales job video (which is not as good). Another front to sell cards icicle, so many in this space is getting to be totally ridiculous. And THIS annoys ME π
You said something that just stuck with me: “I just want to go places”
Me too but I am too busy making snarky commentary about blogs that are all about: “I just want to sell credit cards pretending I am this travel expert doing it all for my friends and family”
Thank you again and welcome here.
@ Delta Points – NOT: Make sure you click on my tiny pics too so I can double my hits too! Tons of history in this museum I went and please make sure you pay with your Flex card because it is one of the few cards that pay me. I can’t shake my head again, I may injure myself. I would still not think about suing DP for that lol. Comment for a DP luggage tag! Which reminds me…I have many Fairmont luggage tags I could give away but don’t want to waste my readers’ time!
icicle says
I want to hug you so much right now.
LMAO (prolly forever too) about Gary and his picture taking skills.
Yea, out of all of them…he seems the most clueless. Ironic really. And very annoying.

Gary’s click-bating, over dramatic “headlines” annoy me more than everyone’s requisite linkie filled posts.
Perhaps, it’s because Gary’s blog used to regularly provide informed and useful content?
Maybe every now and then he still does. Shame I’ll miss it because I refuse to support his current editorial/marketing policy by continuing to click and view his posts.
Feels good to “Just Say No”!
p.s. Reclaiming those few minutes of my life previously spent reading those rehashed summaries Gary now passes off as content is like find the new 10X everywhere card! π

I believe MilesAbound uses profanity and vulgarity, which, according to Rick is tearing the hobby apart, so George, you’re a coward for linking to him without a condemnation. Supposedly educated people don’t need to resort to vulgarity!
Out of an old curiosity, and occasioned by Rick’s comments yesterday, I peeked over to see that, yup, FTG is still promoting an inferior offer to their readers In their famous defense, “things move fast in this hobby,” and that there’s a better offer available has only been known since the day they put up that post. What’s taking $50 out of every reader/conversion’s pocket, anyway? Messrs. Kohlberg, Kravis, and Roberts gotta eat too, you know.
And not to step in on Brother Steve’s gig, but it appears that Brother Howie (in comments at the post linked above) provides his readers incorrect information. According to this post TBB rightly applauded, once can sign up for another card 24 months after getting the bonus. Shocking!
Still, today’s Worst Person in the World is the vulgarian MilesAbound because he called Gary Leff a whore. MilesAbound, the proper term is “sex worker.”
TravelBloggerBuzz says
“you are tearing me apart Lisa” Lol
It is “personal responsibility”! I hear they will refund the $50 to all who apply for credit cards at the Newbie credit card bangthemDO in Charlotte. Yeah right. I am the guy who is tearing the hobby apart. Even Milevalue (many hours later) corrected the UA link to include the better offer. Of course you never know who was responsible for yet another gem at FTG as it is signed by “FTG Staff”. Might as well be “KKR Template”.
It’s all about “Your credit is our most important asset”…
I am getting angry so I will go to lunch now π
Thanks.
Saw your message & had to approve it. I think Akismet caught it due to the links. Sorry about that.
Nick @ Personal Finance Digest says
There’s a newbie DO in charlotte? When’s that one?
TravelBloggerBuzz says
It’s the Frugal Travel Guy newbie signup Credit Card DO. Thought it was Charlotte but I may have the city wrong. By the way, the inferior UA offer is still up in their site. And then they wonder why people get angry and think of FTG as a giant joke.
On a different note, just learned that FT’s The Gate is joining Boarding Area. Looks like the KKR guys are cleaning house…meaning: no credit card revenues no need for you. Brian, u here, care to comment?

I try not to be TOO hard on the credit card bloggers for trying to make money. They are, after all, a business. Gary does way more good than harm and, frankly, deserves a pass when he throws in a stupid Chase credit card posts once in awhile (I’ve criticized him when he’s thrown in 3 or 4 in a day or two, though!). Before criticizing a blogger for doing something to make money, think about whether you’d criticize another business for a similar tactic. Like I criticize restaurants for marking up booze prices to ridiculous margins (like $6 for a draft beer) but only when they try to hide the price. If they give me a drinks menu that tells me what the damage is, they’re just trying to make a buck and stay in business.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Well, I have a blog that reviews blogs. I can not avoid blogging about things that really annoy me.
Regarding being a business: I would like all these blogs to come out and say that they ARE a business! Instead, they are all being written as they are all these friendly guys who happen to be experts in all things travel/miles/points/creditcards/upgrades/mileageruns/Vendoming/firstclass/flatbeds/luxurytoilets/Maldives and they are just blogging for FREE. I mean, take a look at FTG. Friendly folks who just want to help you travel for FREE right? DansDeals pumps a lot but the dude never hid that he is out to make money and feed his family. So…that bugs me:-) The thing is monetizing/profit maximizing activities take so much time there is no way in hell you can stay as an expert! So the advice in these blogs tends to be inferior to other blogs I recommend who know their craft much more than these blogs who gravitate more and more what really maximizes the $$$ profits: Credit Cards. But you knew that. I bet you the vast majority of their readers have no clue and they are not going to be told about it. Instead, they will be told “we sure appreciate if you use our links that pay us a small referral credit/commission/blah blah.
At the end of the day, it is a free country and we all do what we want.
Chris says
Yes DD pumps a lot but he doesn’t have to be a scumbag and pump crappier stuff.
dhammer53 says
I miss the days when the bloggers put out 1 article a day.
I come from the ‘less is better school’. If you blog multiple times a day, I’m less inclined to read the blog. Travel bloggers, please take note.
As for clicking on cc links, I’m more inclined to do my clicking on blogs that I enjoy reading, and blogs that have opened my eyes to a specific idea.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I have learned that cranking out more “content” helps traffic. Traffic helps ads rates and, of course, the more traffic the higher the probability of having more readers (which includes newbies who find your blog through google searches=goldmine) click on what really matters as far as money goes: credit card app links π
Sam says
Buzz-
Here’s what I do when I get a political phone call: I write down the date, time, person and organization calling, and of course which candidate. I then ask the caller to kindly have me removed from all of the candidate’s calling lists. I tell the caller that if I receive another call from anyone supporting the candidate, I will vote for the candidate’s opponent, noting that this would not be losing a vote but would actually be a net change of -2 votes, having gone from +1 to -1. Needless to say, the next call for that candidate results in a very disappointed volunteer.
Another approach on the same topic are calls regarding issues rather than a candidate. These often start with the caller saying something like “I am calling today about an important issue impacting our country’s future”. I respond by saying I think the most important issue impacting our country’s future is the invasion of our peaceful homes by intrusive telephone calls. Some callers answer with “what does that have to do with franking.”, but the more alert ones apologize for the interruption.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Great advice, thanks. I do not pick up the phone, I have caller ID π I am more pissed off on the emails! They pass your email address to so many others that they are all spamming me asking for money, it’s nauseating!

DUDE! DO NOT MOVE TO MIAMI! I live in FLL area. We consider the Dade/Broward border to be entering another country and should require passports. It’s a different world, and the traffic is HORRIBLE. Broward or Palm Beach way to go and you can get to MIA quick if you avoid rush hour (even quicker when they extend the Express Variable Pay lanes into Broward, construction just started).
Plus you have FLL airport too cheapest airport in the country woo hoo! (You can pay for flights you do know that miles blogger addicts right? Kidding!)
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I reconsidered my move as soon as I found that Parker has killed the warm nuts on AA flights. You can have all the cookies, they are not healthy π
Nick @ Personal Finance Digest says
Not only is the traffic horrible in Miami, but the drivers are horrible too. It’s a volatile mix of senior citizens and poorly-trained foreign drivers. I love visiting there but I think I would go nuts if I lived there.
And yeah, it really is like a foreign country. My foreign-born wife says she kind of feels at home there.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Will be in NYC over the weekend visiting wife’s family. Every time I go there I can’t wait to leave to come to my serene house in Michigan and look at the woods in my back yard and enjoy my three car garage π
Brian Cohen says
That is my home town you are talking about there, George.
You do not find me disparaging Greece, do you? Of course not! Do you know why?!?…
…because I have never been there β yet.
I must correct that anomaly one day. Visit Greece. There. I just added that to my list.
Then again, I enjoy the woods out back at my home too, George β so I am with you on that one. I can do that for hours…
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I am very surprised you have not been to Greece!
I can disparage Greece 24/7, the place is schizophrenic! The only poor country full of rich people (just less than there were, but still…)

Steve says
Looks like Gary is whining about the US News and World Airline rankings, because they had the audacity to rank airlines largely around how the vast majority of people use frequent flier miles and not around how Gary uses them
He cites as one example that they rate the quality of Alaska Airlines and not the quality of partners you can redeem Alaska miles on like Emirates. What he doesn’t mention is that 85% of all Mileage Plan redemptions are on Alaska and probably around 1% are on Emirates
Jetblue and Southwest at the top – no surprise. Those would likely be the overwhelming favorites if you talk a poll of best frequent flier programs
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I saw that on Feedly and didn’t even bother checking it out…I can only take so much!
SteveSucks says
Hey schmuck-boy! You enjoying those Southwest redemptions are ya?

Here is my snarky take on the BA sketch drawings http://boardingarea.com/our-bloggers/ Wandering A looks 12 years old. Miles Professor looks like a tired soccer mom. Delta Points looks fat. Mommy Points looks hot. Brian from The Gate looks very handsome. FammiVolare looks like a Hit Man. Jeffsetter outta sue. Extra Pack O’ Nuts looks Black. Gleff looks just adorable.

I think Wandering A’s double chin (in the sketch) can start a blog of its own. It would probably still have better content than much of BA.
