BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
This is truly a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it while it lasts.
In case you missed it earlier this week, I did publish my annual post: How I Burned 1,893,248 Miles and Points in 2025.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“ Whenever a king sees that his people are about to revolt, he starts a war…” – Napoleon
MUST READ GEMS
Best thing I read last week: Index Funds Aren’t Boring. You’re Just Addicted to Feeling Smart.
Read the whole thing. If you don’t have the time, here are the key takeaways:
- Index funds aren’t boring; they’re a recipe for predictable growth with a high probability for success.
- The more complex your investments, the more chances there are that something can go wrong.
- A basic index fund can often outperform most hedge funds, private equity funds, and active managers.
I agree with every word and this post captures how I manage clients’ money and my own. I leave the excitement for my travels instead…

Good sensible advice again from Jason Zweig at his WSJ “The Intelligent Investor” column: How to Trade the War: Avoid Gimmicky Strategies and Overheated Assets. Investors have to fight the urge to make big moves as the war in Iran rattles markets. Investors have to fight the urge to make big moves as the war in Iran rattles markets.
The assets most likely to benefit during wartime are already expensive. If you didn’t buy an umbrella while the sun was shining, that protection will cost you dearly now.
Before this war is over, it’s likely to generate a lot more surprises—positive and negative. Even if you don’t feel nervous now, unexpected setbacks in the war could later make you vulnerable to a fear-based marketing message.
Big, sudden portfolio changes are like that: easy to put in place and hard to reverse. Whatever you do if this war worsens, you should avoid doing anything that can’t be easily and cheaply undone.
This is a good reminder that it is not a one way street to the promised land in investing: A Short History of Stock Market Pullbacks.
Here’s my unscientific definition for stock market downturns:
-5% = pullback
-10% = healthy correction
-15% = correction
-20% = bear market
-30% = collapse
-40% = crash
-50% = crisis

CRYPTO/TECH/SCAMS
Anyone can pretend to be anything they want online. Not sure who said it but I do remember the “on the internet, no one knows you are a dog” meme. Anyway, another piece of shit who was not what gullible people who fell for his shit believed: FINRA-Suspended Broker ‘K Money’ Pleads Guilty to Social Media Fraud.
…he reinvented himself as a successful trader on Facebook, calling himself “K$” or “K Money,” and touting his (false) bona fides as a “Wall Street veteran,” a “luminary,” and a “beacon of knowledge,”…Thom offered subscriptions for trading lessons and daily trade suggestions, managing a Facebook group called the “K$ Trading Group.”Thom used the remaining funds for dining at restaurants, travel, luxury goods, cash withdrawals and transfers to other accounts (the expenses included $6,026 for Airbnb and $5,883 for an all-business-class airline flight between New Jersey and Paris). [Wonder what miles he earned lol].
AI
We are all wondering about AI, Bubbles, and Markets these days.
Instead of trying to guess when the AI—or any other—bubble might burst, investors should take the view that the market could drop at any time. Then structure your portfolio accordingly. First, make sure you’re diversified at the asset class level, with enough stowed in short-term bonds or cash to carry you through a multi-year market downturn. Then go one level deeper, auditing your stock holdings for individual stocks or funds overly exposed to any one corner of the market. And if you’re in a private fund—especially a private credit fund—I’d identify the nearest exit.
Disturbing, what are we even doing? Sorry, Mom. You’re Chatting With an A.I. Agent, Not Your Son. Silicon Valley’s young coders are getting creative with this new technology. They also worry they’re not spending enough time with it.
Mr. Laverty has about four or five agents — he lost count — controlling parts of his life. They all answer to one “god agent” that manages updates. The agents have access to his social media accounts, to tell him what’s trending and draft posts for him; they code for him; and they have access to his banking information. His space-gray MacBook is always open and connected to Wi-Fi so he can run his agents around the clock. “If I’m not doing this, then how am I going to attain like a level of success compared to the other people around me?” he said. [WTF repeatedly]
The article has some other quotes by others that just made shake my head so much it almost separated from my neck…I would not be a proud parent if these were my kids, hello?
This will not shock you since you have been reading my blog: Share of web articles written by AI or humans. Sit back, click play and watch the horror (after ChatGPT was introduced in 2022). Every word in this blog is by one human.

First! Haha! Haven’t said that for a while. LOTS of good stuff this time. Congrats on the ticket to Bangkok! I’ll be dipping in and out of this all weekend. Lots to read, though I already saw that one article about the cartel Olympics. Crazy stuff, right? Thanks as always, George! I truly appreciate the blog!
The blog is indeed appreciated!
My guess that the Sapphire Reserve refresh would work out, at least for
this year, seems right. The 1.5x points boost on a cross country flight
and the 2.0x points on an Edit hotel made a very big difference.
I’ve been glued to screens keeping up with the Iran thing for a solid month now. For about the last three weeks I’ve been feeling exactly like I did in February 2020, wondering why people aren’t freaking out about the energy / supply chain / inflation disaster that’s slowly unfolding due to events halfway around the world.
It feels like something changed today and people are starting to be concerned but I don’t think we’ve hit the appropriate level of alarm yet. That said, the U.S. will be in a pretty good position given that we export energy and make most of our own fertilizer. But good luck to the folks in poor countries.
Forbes 30 under 30 is a cursed list, lmao.
My son read “Project Hail Mary” and saw the movie; he loved both. Haven’t seen it yet myself, we’ll see.
My wife read a comment somewhere about with the Iran war going so horribly, Trump may have to distract the country by releasing the Epstein files.
Great article about index funds.
@ Carl: Yeah, that cartel Olympics story is so wild. I can see why Pena is excited about it, acting that main character could be Oscar material. Then again, with the Atlantic writer in the mix, maybe the movie can be from his perspective with Pena acting the writer character. But undoubtedly that con guy, wow, playing the long game and almost pulling it off. If he channeled all this talent to good deeds huh? I also wondered if his mom was in on it or maybe he fooled her too. Or probably she is not his mom lol.
@ DML: I am starting to think we all can be blinded from our deep inherent biases in this space. Like, for me, I never liked Bilt. And hard for me to switch from “can’t get any decent value out of DL Skymiles and Marriott Bonvoy programs”.
@ NickPFD: Hopefully something changed. There is a reason the phucking morons in charge do shit in the weekends! Mr. Market is our best hope the world gets out of this jam. Then again, these morons double down, it is getting repulsing to watch. And super unhealthy. I recommend you get unglued from the TV watching Iran war stuff. I do recommend AlJazeera which is actually a really good news organization. And just avoid all the US based news outlets. Yeah, I agree we will be fine and the world is suffering and will despair if this shit is still going on longer. At some point this too shall pass. I used to kid that Trump will kill us all. This is no longer a joke we must find a way to survive this guy.
I did not read that Hail Mary book. I am a sucker for everything science fiction. But I thought the movie was not well made and purely acted, especially for everyone around Ryan Gosling.
@ Christian: Thanks for the laugh, love it, so right on:
:…with the Iran war going so horribly, Trump may have to distract the country by releasing the Epstein files.”
My 2025 1.9 million miles and points burned has not been linked by any other blog. And yet, they can’t stop linking to the View From The Wing blog which in the past 24 hours has these in headlines of blog posts (don’t see the full headline in milesfeed.com). Something is rotten in this space, maybe call them out?

Trump asked NATO to send ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. Every. single. ally. refused. Trump called them “cowards” and said NATO has a “very bad future”. He then announced that the United States doesn’t actually need the Strait of Hormuz. He then said countries that do need it should police it themselves. He then told China to police it. He then sent 5,000 Marines toward it.
This sequence of statements was delivered, as far as the public record shows, by the same person, using the same mouth, within roughly 24 hours. The allies are cowards for not helping with the thing he doesn’t need, which is why he’s sending Marines to die for it, unless the countries that do need it do it themselves, which they won’t, because they’re cowards.
Trump told reporters the strait could be opened with a “simple military maneuver” that is “relatively safe” but requires “a lot of help”. Help. From the cowards. Who he doesn’t need. For the strait. That he also doesn’t need.
Good morning Buzz,
Good luck today, as I’m assuming you’ll be watching the games today, especially Vols/Wolverines.
The Tucson boys put on quite a show in the 2nd half last night. Speaking of Tucson, I got to the airport two hours early this morning for a flight to Vegas. Exactly one person in line for TSA Precheck…that was me. In the regular line…two people. The desert gets a hard time, bit it does have its perks.
Enjoyed the article on the Cartel Olympics. I have to agree all that extra work that could have gone towards a good cause. The grift is seemingly everywhere these days, disheartening. Thank goodness we have sports gambling to take our mind off these things…haha
I do not spend much time on the internet apart from work so I imagine most people have seen the sign sweeping the country, I had to chuckle…
“Are we great yet, cause I just feel embarrassed”
It’s true, I don’t get out much.
Thanks for the great post as always, enjoy the game.
UofM looked like an NBA team beating Vols, wow. Going to be an epic game with Arizona!
That Duke-UConn game was epic, that freshman’s last second shot will live on in NCAA history…like that Laetner turnaround shot.
I have a few amazing articles abt gambling coming up in next post. Amazing as in…this is not going to turn out well.
Also, epic World Cup qualification games on tap
The nerfing of Citi to Preferred and the imminent Hyatt deval is really troubling. Not sure where hotel opportunities will lay in the future. Am globalist with Hyatt am started looking elsewhere but value is just not there. It’s like an airline world where every program looks like Delta. One has to think becoming a free agent and using points via portal would be the way ahead?
It’s a new reality on the ground Peteco. Harder to earn due to bank restrictions, so much harder to burn since everything is full, devaluations galore. We are all evolving dealing with a hobby that is just not as valuable as it used to be. Let’s face it, we have been spoiled. And still addicted. But we are nearing the point I think to go all cash back and going to free agent mode burning our points in portals booking what is best. Yeah it sure sucks. But it is what it is. I blame so many bloggers and sooooo many YouTubers who discovered banks pay them to sell plastic and suddenly all got the urge to show others how to travel for free smh. If they move on…I will likely still be here trying to sell a few cards at best lol.
Anyway, Bolivia imploded. Then again, wtf is wrong with Italy, wow. It would be really something to see Iran-Iraq in the WC. Of course not going to happen but what if…
Tomorrow’s blog post will be one of my very best.
Another month passed failing to hit both cc and coffee targets. Incredibly deflating you guys…
Not seeing me doing this much longer. Focusing on $ will take away from focusing on content quality and I have a problem with that. So, enjoy while this lasts.
Meanwhile:

I beg you Delta
