MILES/POINTS
The Glossary. At Flyer Talk. Yeah, I know…slow weekend in the miles/points world.
There appears to be chatter about a possible devaluation of British Airways miles coming down the line. These short haul flights for just 4,500 Avios points were likely not sustainable so I would not be surprised. Bloggers will still sell the Chase BA Visa with the same vigor I am sure…More on this in the Blog buzz section below. Since it looks like you may need to burn some Avios, here is one post by Miles4More with British Airways Avios sweet spots (with links on top to other regions with their own sweet spots).
I recently applied for the United Mileage Explorer Visa card for myself after Mrs. TBB got hers and met the spend in a few hours after I sent her to the mall 🙂 Of course I went for the better offer that gives me $50 statement credit. In a nutshell, let me get this straight. Chase will give me a total of 57,000 United miles, 2 lounge passes, priority boarding, better award seat availability and pay me $50? I love America, what a country! For all the bloggers who push the affiliate inferior offer to their readers, this is what it is about (by FlyerTalker kokonutz):
The disgust level gets multiplied, however, when a business rips folks off while at the same time claiming to exist to HELP them.
Further, if a hotel frequency program took 10k more points for an award stay than they should have, I’d be outraged. Livid. Screaming chastity raped. Same thing if an airline charged me $50 extra on a ticket just because they thought I wasn’t paying careful enough attention. Ripping me off ‘just a little’ is still ripping me off.
I have booked a car for two days using the Avis First deal from the other day for the #westcoastdo in Phoenix in November. I should get a nice upgrade and roll into the Kimpton looking awesome. But what is more awesome is paying just $22 for taxes and fees #winning.
I am about to totally destroy my reputation and future marketability. Yes, it is true. Got Mrs. TBB a Spirit Airlines card omg! Bank of America approved her instantly with $15,000 credit line. Bonus is just 15,000 miles and need to charge something on it to keep miles alive and escape the amazingly ridiculous three month expiration policy. Spirit has lots of flights out of Detroit and it may come in handy. Actually, I am thinking to escape to Cancun sometime next year #planahead. Here is a really good article at Heels First Travel for traveling on Spirit Airlines.

The Strange and Curious Tale of the Last True Hermit. At GQ. A guy walks out into the woods where he spends nearly thirty years alone and was stealing food to survive. A fascinating story of a journalist who tries to get to know him. Long story which I found fascinating. In page 5, we get this passage:
But during our final visit, he was more reflective. Isn’t everybody, he said, seeking the same thing in life? Aren’t we all looking for contentment? He was never happy in his youth—not in high school, not with a job, not being around other people. Then he discovered his camp in the woods. “I found a place where I was content,” he said. His own perfect spot. The only place in the world he felt at peace.

Just a Reminder – When you go, so do your Skymiles – Delta Points [Another post without a credit card affiliate link. TBB impacting blogs every day. Not going to last, you watch. I wonder what Delta execs are thinking about this blog…encouraging readers to write in and complaint about stuff like that.]
What I find most reprehensible is running into mainstream personal finance blogs that feel they are enough of experts to recommend travel reward credit cards by mostly copying and pasting Chase and Barclays marketing text. The latest ones are : The Simple Dollar pumping the Chase Freedom card (and several others, could not resist) and Modest Money pumping the Carnival card…(yep, because you could not go any lower than this). Shaking my head. And here I am pimping my Amazon link. WTF!!!
Some time ago there was a startup that was going to come up with this magic product called Coin to store all your credit cards and gift cards on your phone. I remember lots of bloggers, always looking out for any content that is not blatant outright credit card pumping and/or content that could easily be used later on to pump more credit cards, (Dear Readers: I have loaded my Chase Ink Bold, Ink Plus, Sapphire Preferred, and on and on to oblivion…you get the idea) wrote about this and gladly sent this company $55 to pre-order it. Looks like many months later they are going to come up with something…you just need to hold on some more. Here is what I thought about this then and what I think about it now. What a pile of merde! I guess I will sit this one out and just see how it goes…
4 Ways to Earn Points and Save Cash on Back-to-School Shopping – Frugal Travel Guy [Post written by former editor. There goes another withdrawal in the TBB Bank. Hey FTG readers, you can use shopping portals, WOW! Not sure how a link to a Boarding Area got through. Of course the FTG Staff must be sorely disappointed only the Chase Freedom credit card was sold, so sad. Even pushed referral links to Shopkick and Plink, wonder if those go to Rick? Of course it is the personal responsibility of the readers to grab a magnifying glass to read the amazingly clear vague disclosures…business as usual at FTG. Even the bio is FTG quality, come on, you can do better than that! 1.5 million miles earned, really?]
The Best Credit Card Sign Up Bonuses With Under $1000 Spending Requirement – The Miles Professor [Never lose an opportunity to find a way to pump a card from Barclays Bank, especially after writing a decent post and trying to stay under the radar for a few more posts before that. It’s all about what pays well. Funny how a few non paying credit card links are thrown in the mix so it is not so obvious. See you again Barclay and Credit Karma links soon!
Lufthansa Miles & More Miles For The Economist Subscription – One Mile at a Time [I usually don’t even bother with these posts. But I was bored so I clicked on it to see if the blog had the audacity to push some credit cards along with just telling us how many Lufthansa miles you can get with an Economist subscription. I was not expecting any. And then I realized this blog has joined with View from the Wing to become two of the mega credit card pumping blogs in this space, especially this year! Not only the Lufthansa card was pumped but, sit down please, both of the Amex SPG cards were pumped. And it looks like Amex is back with all the Boarding Area blogs? Well, expect lots more Amex links. I am not a betting man. I only bet when I am 100% sure I will win. And I will take this bet anytime anywhere!
Can You Get the Bonus on the US Airways MasterCard Twice? – Milevalue [ This is a prime example of how you can sell a card harder than any living blogger. Barf!!!!!]

BusinessFirst to Europe: Best Deal with United Miles? – Just Another Points Traveler [This blog is turning biased towards credit cards driving the content that is painful to watch. To all bloggers pushing the United Mileage Explorer Visa that pays you: If you really want to help your readers stop mentioning it and save them $50. You lose lot of credibility when you mention both and even more of it (hint!) when you serve your affiliate links more than once while you passingly mention how to save $50 getting the card. Of course there are other bloggers out there who conveniently forgot how to include the link for the better offer, how douche baggy is that! And then there are other “experts” who still had no clue because, well, they just don’t get around much these days, why would you take advice from them when there are so many others who know what they are talking about and blog responsibly? TBB in a lonely crusade. Sometimes I imagine all the money I could have made in this space and feel a little slutty myself 🙂 ]
Can You Get a Free Checked Bag on United Award Flights? – Million Mile Secrets [Please reread what I wrote just above. And this is folks how you sell credit cards to unsuspecting reader victims! You pepper your post with many affiliate links for the card after a “reader” conveniently asked a dumb question and you mention in passing about the superior offer to save your readers $50 and you have the audacity to state “This is NOT my link but I’ll always tell you about the best deal!” This makes me angry. People feel offended when readers call readers pimps. Posts like this exist to justify such names? I think so. Get your autograph at Chicago you victims!
How Many Credit Cards Should You Apply for and How Often? – Million Mile Bullshit [Sunday morning and my eyes are bleeding from these back to back posts. Gets info wrong too but never get the credit card links wrong! And conveniently forgot to mention the superior United Mileage Explorer Visa card because, you know, this site will always tell you the best deal. Yomamainlaw!]
Finally, some good news! Note by Delta Points informing readers that he is on vacation and will have limited access to the blog and e-mail. Thank you Lord!
Isn’t it amazing how all questions asked by The Points Guy are like layups to sell more credit cards? Funny how my two biggest fans Ingy (Frugal Travel Guy founder) and Delta Points call me an Amazon link pimp LOL!
How To Use Points At Disney World – One Mile at a Time [How to use 8 different credit cards that pay me, thank you very much. Disney World??? LOL!]
Blog Feedback: Additional Contributors – One Mile at a Time [Does anyone have any doubt that the decision has been made already to bring on a few more additional contributors? Time to hone in on those credit card selling skills even more! The funniest part of the post was this: “I don’t want to turn this into a free-for-all with a huge pool of staff writers, nor do I want to have ghost writers using my name and a template.” LOL Just do it, don’t get caught and brush up on them credit card selling skills dude, you’ve been at it all year!]
This Travel Skills dude has a post basically listing all types of news from last week (many do it now, so lame…when you have nothing to say just do a post with links pointing to your other posts, yawn!). Right in the middle of it, we get this jewel: Are you in the market for a new credit card? Looking for a fat points or mileage bonus to sweeten your balance? Then check out our BEST CREDIT CARDS FOR BUSINESS TRAVELERS and scoop up the deals! [Bold font are links of course] Fat bonus? Scoop up the deals? Like you sure would know what they are if they hit you in the face! Oh Lord, got me a binder full of miles experts around me, spare meeeeeee!]
As this was going to be published, all hell broke loose after The Free-quent Flyer on twitter noticed something amiss with the Iberia award chart for AA flights. Then Miles4More tracked down the actual award chart and is sure not pretty. Since BA owns Iberia, there is a good chance they may follow through as both airlines are using Avios. As these experts were trying to get to the bottom of it, @saianel let View from the Wing know to see if he knew anything since he has contacts in the industry. And guess what? View from the Wing gets a hold of it and stops blogging about something else and editing some Chase links and bangs out an alarming post about the imminent BA Avios devaluation enhancing its status as a true expert as nobody gives a flying phuck about some HT’ed twitter handle. And then all hell broke loose. Milevalue copies View from the Wing and thanks him on Twitter. Milevalue had the most ridiculous misleading alarming headline! Many others then jumped in thinking that View from the Wing broke it. TOTAL insanity! Lesson: If you discover something, keep it and post it yourself! Or pass it to me and I will let you be FIRST in the comments hehe. What’s most insane of all is I could be looking at burning about 300k Avios myself and here I am laboring away at this blog…And the night got even worse when I learned that Burger King is looking to buy Tim Hortons, imagine that!
I am tired. Look at the size of this post. I can’t be doing this to me anymore…Something has to give, I am no Superman. And no Amazon orders at all on Saturday. I will have a post on Tuesday asking for feedback (and no, not going to be a motherinlaw-ish type survey).

Hilarious to see how Schlappig, Leff etc have become such total whores. Enjoy the money boys! The banks definitely won once again. Much smarter than the rest of the street. I don’t even think they are allowed to comment on other blogs now, Leff has to actually keep his annoying mouth shut for fear of losing his precious links. He does look like Gollum a bit though….

WTF? Check out VFTW now. Who is Ken? 12 comments in a row. Catch them before they are gone. Talk about angry. And spray tan? What is the deal with that?
Erik says
Wow… just looked at it. Ken should chill and just add the following entry to his HOSTS file:
0.0.0.0 viewfromthewing.boardingarea.com
If my technie memory is correct, that will guarantee that he never sees Gary’s blog again (at least on a Windows PC)
smittytabb says
Ken comments deleted. Now that I think of it, guy with the spray tan sort of looks like Ken as in Barbie and Ken.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I read them. Wow! I wonder who it was and what GL did to him. Now THAT is the definition of angry, not us around here 🙂
Erik says
Besides the pending BA Avios apocalypse rumor (which will really upset me if true!), the truly bad one (if it materializes) is BK taking over Tim Hortons. I get that they are trying to escape US taxes, but didn’t Wendy’s already try and fail with the dual store concept? If memory serves correct, BK has been owned by various private equity groups over the years who have been focused more on balance sheets rather than creating a better restaurant experience. I think that approach has actually weakened BK’s market position. When was the last time you heard about anything earth-shattering or trend-creating at BK? It would be a shame if they started ruining Tim Hortons.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I have not been inside a BK since the 90s! I like Tim Hortons a lot but not as much as Panera! PE groups can mess up things really bad, they are only in it for da money 🙂

The best piece I’ve read about why Iraq isn’t like it was, to say the least, was this article at the Washington Post.
Select quote:
Back in 2003, I was naive and I didn’t have a response to a friend offering the Wolfowitz line of thinking that if we installed a democracy in the Middle East, other countries might follow its lead. I’m hopefully less naive now.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Looks good, I bookmarked it. Don’t get me started on the GWB’s policies now 🙂
DiffPaul says
Well, to be honest, they were Cheney’s policies. Blame GWB for being the world’s stupidest sock puppet, but put the policy blame right where it belongs, please.
One problem is that Americans don’t seem to like protests, however right the protesters may be. People against the Iraq War were right. People against Vietnam were right. Civil Rights protesters were/are right. Women’s suffrage, etc.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
World was safer with Sadam and Qaddafi and Mubarak keeping order 🙂 That was a joke but, oh man, if you look what’s happening there not sure it is off the mark, yikes!
Jeanne says
Thanks for the mention! Good luck on Spirit; we’re all counting on you.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Counting on me to hack Spirit? I’ll do my best 🙂
Andy Shuman @ Lazy Travelers says
Not fair! I thought, I was the #1 Spirit propagandist in the blogosphere. Now there is a competition, too? Is there even one tiny micro-mini-niche I could monopolize and rest on my laurels? 🙂
On a more serious note, I’m surprised to learn that Spirit is better than I thought. If there was anything I THOUGHT I knew, it’s that Spirit didn’t have interline agreements with other airlines. So I presumed, when things go wrong, you’re SOL! Why are there so many complaints to this effect if it ain’t so? Hmm…
TravelBloggerBuzz says
So….who is right regarding the interline agreements? 🙂
Andy Shuman @ Lazy Travelers says
We’ll know soon enough. I have a short, 1-hour layover at FLL on the way to Cancun. If Spirit is true to its reputation and gets there late, we’ll see if I get screwed. Yep, making a guinea pig out of myself is my favorite pastime. 🙂
TravelBloggerBuzz says
You should have Plan B just in case 🙂
KennyB says
Thanks for the link George! I wish we could try Spirit out, but SAT-HOU-FLL on WN just to get a Spirit flight doesn’t sound like much fun, especially since WN had added Caribbean destinations.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I understand. I was shocked how many direct flights Spirit has out of Detroit!

TravelBloggerBuzz says
This Ken posted about 12 comments…straight!
Definitely has a Gary thing, wow! Calling him names and just challenging him to respond. Made ingy look like a model citizen. Not sure we need here. What turned me off the most was lack of grammar and typos 🙂
But some of GL’s posts this year do make me go WTF!
Mark (@palmerlaw) says
Ha! “Thanks” George! 🙂
Already debating the best way to bring ’em along for 2 trips already booked post-thedaymylifechangedforever. My SWA w CP for wife + extra ticket = row of 3 for us? Guess it’s time to shift back from cash back to miles of MS.
I can already see the look on the face of the business traveler just breaking open his WSJ or FT as we settle in across the aisle from him with two in tow…. that, “wait… you not continuing on to coach?… oh, boy.”
TravelBloggerBuzz says
That look would be priceless indeed! Good luck man, you ‘ll need it 😉
No seriously, it will be a hell of a trip! 🙂
Kumar says
With all the drama that i was witnessing yesterday on the twitter and in the blogging world about the avios which clearly showed the ruthless greediness of one so called big blogger and with other respectable experienced ones behaving as if the world is coming to end (with one even talking of redeeming miles to magazines), the only solace in the mess was the article by Dan who approached the entire drama in a sensible way. I understand the severity of the issue if it were to materialise but this kind of approach by bloggers themselves is uncalled for. They were just creating so much of chaos in the blogging space and were running from pillar to post even when something didnt happen. This is also irresponsible blogging IMHO. (I dont care about the biggie but these really good bloggers should give it a thought).
I also feel that it would be better if the number of posts on avios overall reduces as it has gone above normal recently as a whole as that is the best program out there for local travel. However the irony is that every chase blogger has to write something about it to keep their wallets and chase happy while good bloggers try to bring value to their readers by coming up with more valuable redemptions for avios thus creating a flood of posts. May be all this will end only when the actual devaluation happens. Heck. This miles blogging space is difficult to manage many times 🙁
Dan says
Thanks Kumar, the aggregate clickbait headlines just got to me, hence the post, http://www.dansdeals.com/archives/50288
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Milevalue’s headline “Massive Avios Devaluation” or something like that…
What gets me is that so many HT/linked to GL who had no clue as he was busy looking at Ken and/or bucketing in some luxury hotel 🙂

Not all the news is bad about BA…check out the new couch-style business class seat that could be their new Club World. If you need a textbook example of how credit card pimping can lead to irrational things being said in the name of clicks, from OMAT:
“Delta SkyMiles are becoming more valuable in my opinion
As a relative matter, I’ve found that Delta SkyMiles have become more valuable over the past couple of years”
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Magically, just in time after Amex got back in bed with the BA blogs…
Steve says
“Delta Points have been getting more valuable over the past few years”
– said no non-affiliate pusher, ever
You would think the way they hump the 160K VX award availability as a testament to skypesos that it was the greatest thing since the Chase Ink 60K offer (HURRY!!!! ACT FAST!!! LAST CHANCE!!!)
This is where honest bloggers would tell you that this is 50K more than the superior CX J which you can get with Dividend Miles. And where they would tell you “oh by the way you probably will need to spend $400 on positioning flights to LAX”
But that’s just things that honest bloggers would tell you.

I signed up for the Spirit card a month back, and let me tell you…. couple that with the Club Carlson card and you have one bad ass MS’ing duo. I’m out of MIA, so with the nice Latin presence of Clubby C it makes perfect sense. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to use for a recent Jamaica trip because the fare was $9 (sold!) while the closed-in reward booking fee was $15.
It’s a great day when the short haul 4,500 mile BA redemptions look like a bad value, damn I love Spirit.
I suggest you invest in a couple of these if you are going to be doing a lot of Spiriting. They are quite roomy and technically a personal item so you avoid the carry-on or checked bag fees.
