Some interesting thoughts by Morgan Housel: A Few Things I’m Pretty Sure About.
The internet is unique in the history of technology because there’s a list of things it improved (communication, access to information) but another list of things it likely made worse for almost everybody (political polarization, dopamine addiction from social media, less in-person interaction, lower attention spans, the spread of misinformation.)
There aren’t many examples throughout history of technology so universal with so many obvious downsides relative to what existed before it. But the wounds are so fresh that it’s not surprising many look at AI with the same fear.
This is more hope than prediction, but I wouldn’t be surprised if in 20 years we look back at this era of political nastiness as a generational bottom we grew out of.
PERSONAL FINANCE
One more for Health Savings Accounts: HSAs Are Expanding. Some Expect A Surge In New Accounts. Can they get even better? Yes.
You may be seeing some positive press about hedge funds, how they finally came back in 2025. Don’t fall for it, it is all BS. Because Hedge funds post rare banner year, but the S&P 500 index beat’em by nearly 400 basis points.
Hedge funds returned an average of 12.6% in 2025, the $5 trillion asset management elite’s best year since 2009, according to Hedge Fund Research data, cited by Bloomberg. In contrast, the S&P 500’s seventh best year since 2010 yielded 17.9% return, or 5.3 percentage points better than the average hedge fund. And, in all but three of the last 16 years*, hedge funds, which imply outperformance, failed to do just that.
Really good roundup of what happened in 2025: The 4 Defining Charts for Markets in 2025: Key Takeaways for Investors.
Among dozens of developments, four stood out in 2025:
- The US economy was resilient despite tariffs.
- Bitcoin and gold traveled different paths.
- International markets surged.
- Exchange-traded funds once again owned the year.
As for 2026, there are two to keep an eye on:
- Hyperscaler bonds tell a different story from their stocks.
- Public company buyouts are growing more common.

CRYPTO/TECH/SCAMS
This is the definition of a giant piece of shit: Georgia Advisor Pleads Guilty To Running A $380M Ponzi Scheme.
CORE Fund investors were told something different. They were promised “100% passive income” from tax liens, with returns as high as 22% annually. The fund claimed government protection and full collateralization. In reality, prosecutors say Drive Planning stopped investing money in the CORE Fund in late 2022, while continuing to solicit new funds…Federal authorities say Burkhalter spent about $2 million on a yacht. He put $2.1 million toward a luxury condo in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He spent roughly $800,000 on luxury vehicles, including a motorcoach and multiple high-end SUVs. Millions more went to private jet travel, jewelry, designer clothing and beauty treatments.
This is becoming a huge problem: How to Prevent Aging Parents and Relatives From Making Financial Mistakes. Getting family members to listen to you when you think they are headed down a dangerous financial path can be difficult. But there are preventive steps you can take.
Cybercrime against elders is skyrocketing. In 2024, the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Internet Crime Complaint Center received nearly 150,000 complaints of cyber-enabled fraud against people 60 or older, with almost $5 billion in losses, according to the agency’s annual report. The victims lost an average of $83,000.
AI
Out of all the CEOs involved in AI, I find Anthropic’s Dario Amodei the most down to earth, you know, normal human. He wrote a very long thoughtful post about AI and I think it is worth of your time. This is the essence of my blog, I share with you material that I find worthy enough to share with you. Because this is the blog mission and there is a reason ‘To Educate” is listed first. Oh, lost my train of thought, here is the article: The Adolescence of Technology. Confronting and Overcoming the Risks of Powerful AI.

Well *I’d* link to you if I were blogging…
Supposedly our five-year snow drought will be broken tomorrow. The household is psyched! And I’ll be smoking some NC-style BBQ in the snow.
Like Nick says, if I blogged I’d link to you, but for now the subscription to the coffee thing is the best I can do. Well, that, and commenting and reading here. Lucky me, I have to have a tree guy here today to do some major work on a couple trees (Italian Plums that have not been pruned in, um, a long time) and he does NOT take payment by check or cash, just credit card. Odd around here for a service guy but since I gotta spend, at least I’ll get points.
Our cold weather seems to have slackened but looking east I am glad I am not there. Brr! Daughter back east is not happy with the weather this last week and I do not blame her.
Travel… George, I got to say, getting harder and harder to think about and plan it. Gonna be 69 in March and trying to schedule around nephrologists and cardiologists and regular doctors and whatever else, well, it is getting tough. I think maybe this year if I am lucky, it is one road trip and one Italy trip, if I can pull that off. But the fun of trying to accumulate the points and miles is still there.
Thanks for all the good stuff here, as always it is quite appreciated. I hope all is well there and that the house renewal is getting done good and fast as possible. Check everything. I had a new shower stall put in a month ago and once I got to use it, the first time, I realized they had NOT made sure the drain was the lowest point in the shower pan. Negotiations are still ongoing but it is looking like it will be like that for a long time.
Anyhow, I write more than usual for some reason. Thanks as always!
Thanks for the great links! Glad you got such a nice shoutout … looks
like an interesting site …I’ve bookmarked it ….

Thank you to the regular commenters/supporters who take the time to comment here.
Amazingly, it appears no credit card sale was sold during the whole month of January! Unless it was a Capital One cc sale which will appear on March 5. Very sobering and deflating.
The media diet is continuing, need to reduce the time devoted to TBB. Because it is not paying for the kitchen remodeling lol.
Gotta head to the gym before I watch my hometown soccer team AEL Larissa go for the third win in a row. After a disastrous return to the Greek First Division in 2025 and now on the third coach this season things are finally looking up and we have moved up in the standings to avoid relegation back to the Second Division.
And then it is taxes again.
It’s phucking freezing here, this deep cold wave is not relenting!
Enjoy your weekend guys.
UPDATE: 11″ of snow yesterday! 4th biggest day of snow in Charlotte history and the biggest in 22 years!
Wow, this is more of what we got here in a while! Hope you handle it fine and keep the power on.
I would absolutely recommend Palacio Del Inka as a points stay. We did two nights there last October to acclimate to the elevation before doing the 4 day Inka trail hike. It is a converted Spanish palace, which itself was a “converted” (by force) Inka palace and the lower level famous stonework is all over the hotel. I have no idea why they say “The property is essentially a resort, with no nearby town to visit”. It is right in the center of Cusco, about a 10 minute walk from their town square. There are tons of good restaurants to try, Spanish churches and other classic Spanish buildings, Inka ruins and historical sites, etc. that are all walkable from the hotel (a bunch of the “free” walking tours start from that town square location). If your fitness is up for it, the Inka trail hike is truly an amazing experience. Taking the train to Machu Picchu is great too, as the site is beautiful, but walking the trail the Inka took and looking down from the Sun Gate down onto Machu Picchu is on another level.
Great feedback, thank you.
