As you know, I go back a very long time in the Flyertalk forums. If you were not aware….Flyertalk has a forum titled Community Buzz. In which we learn and sign up for meetups. They are almost always free and/or non profit! Some go back many years. I would like to alert you to two of them who are dear in my heart:
Brooklyn Reality Tour
Blog reader Dan (FT: dhammer53) has been doing this for so long, now going for Number 18. As in 18 straight years, wow! I attended in 2016 after wanting to do it for so long but never managing to schedule it as it is always in early to mid June and my kids usually get out of school at that time. I had a blast in 2016 and got to meet fellow Flyertalkers I knew virtually for so long.
Flyertalk is indeed a community of very generous and like minded folks and we love to help others. In this day and age of commercial blogs sold out to big corporations and placing credit card conversions always FIRST, it is so refreshing to be around people who are genuinely addicted to all things travel with miles and points without an ulterior motive to sell you anything at all.
Dan gets a bus (there is a fee for this equally shared) and shows you all around Brooklyn, you stop at great places to eat and spend the day with Flyertalkers, I mean, it’s pretty tough not to enjoy it. If you can combine it with a quick New York City weekend excursion, all the better! What I really liked was the commentary by a local and all the personal references about the neighborhoods, very educational and…touching!
Ann Arbor Art Fair DO
This is in my back yard put together by my friend Dave (FT: Bikeguy). This will be number 13, as in 13 years straight! This is more like a reunion of old friends now. In case you didn’t know, this is where most of the blogger Titans made their debut in speaking to a larger crowd. It fills up very fast now. It is always around the unique Art Fair festival when thousands of outsiders invade Ann Arbor and make parking a living hell ๐
Last year I had a party in my house on Friday night. I may do it again but I need to figure out how to do it and not piss off too many as it will likely be very much in demand.
In THIS post, I live blogged the speaker part of the DO in 2016.

Is the old A2DO crowd getting smaller with the loss of Ninja tricks?
I can guess 90% of Ariana’s talk.
TBBTheDude says
Actually DO crowd is getting larger!
This is no longer the “speaker will reveal tricks” DO anymore…too many bloggers lurking in the audience for that.
Her talk will be mostly on the travel to refugee camps in Europe I think.

Went for dinner with colleague next door, forgot the name of the place, Seasons or 22 something. Really good too…But more suited for a date. Puesto I think was perfect for our meetup!

I warned him not to mention those blogs, but he thought I was just kidding, haha.

After the first BA ones…when he mentioned TPG…THEN I thought he was playing me…and then when MMS followed up…I knew I had made a grave mistake to let them in ๐
Kidding….nice couple. Hope they see the light though in the blog front!

FlyerTalk has had a huge influence on my life. Not to mention, I’ve met some amazing lifelong friends through FlyerTalk. I guess that’s why I keep on contributing. The adaptation to social media and the blog world is a lot of fun… but, “old people” (I’m 46) like me still do like the message boards.

I agree with everything you said!
