ON MY MIND
One month to go until D Day!
It looks like I am picking up a new Mercedes next weekend! No, it wasn’t due to affiliate links lol. What if I told you I am getting a new Mercedes AND I get paid $200 for it AND I only pay for the gas? This is the advantage of living in a big research university town like Ann Arbor. University of Michigan received a grant by the Department of Transportation to test some new technology in cars equipped with it. I volunteered and was chosen for it. One 2 hr training session and then 30 minutes visit to the test site each month so technicians can download some data (while I use the free wifi and drink the free coffee in the building lounge). I will post a pic when I pick it up. Well, I picked Mercedes and I should get it but they have not confirmed it yet. I hope I do not end up with a Buick!
No burning of miles and points lately, I have several targets I need to finish up but no time!
MILES/POINTS
I would like to have Million Mile Secrets add these questions to the Friday interviews he does:
“Would you start your blog if adding lucrative credit card affiliate links was not an option?”
“So, you got into this a year ago. Why do you think we need yet another blog in this space?”
“What is it about all you guys in the Midwest who are into this hobby, don’t you have better things to do, mostly in the winter?”. Come on Daraius, spice these up, they are getting to be so repetitive!
I should have a prize to see who can predict when this new blogger will add credit card affiliate links. Or maybe when I add them:-) I will take the bet that I will add them much later than this blogger! And welcome Andy and Becki to this crazy time sucking blogging hobby!

FLYER TALK BEST OF
There has been some good discussion lately in the “What is the most useful frequent flyer blog?”. Canarsie posted this below (#1925) and I thought it was so excellent I would like to share it with you:
I agree — there is nothing wrong with that. [making money blogging – And I agree!]
The spirit of giving between members of FlyerTalk is very much alive and well today. You can still get great advice for free. All you have to do is ask. The difference is that the membership of FlyerTalk has experienced exponential growth since those “good old days.” More people are interested in finding out how to earn and redeem miles and points — and thus, more people are capitalizing on that interest by devoting themselves full-time to what they enjoy doing: traveling, writing and dispensing that advice. However, those people — such as “bloggers” — do need to earn a living. It is one thing to pop onto FlyerTalk for a few minutes to assist a fellow member with no strings attached; but it is another thing to devote to something full time and not expect to be compensated in some manner. I would suspect that back in the “good old days”, it would have been far more difficult to eke out a career devoted to miles and points — simply because there were far fewer people interested in it. Also, frequent travel loyalty programs have become far more complex — and that is not even including credit cards. People arguably need assistance more than ever. Let us not confuse the spirit of FlyerTalk with a growing industry which has a potential customer base with a demand being fulfilled by those who choose to devote themselves to supply it full-time — and let us not confuse those who want to earn an honest living “blogging” in the miles and points industry with those who may seem to be deceitful with their editorial content. In both cases, they can be mutually exclusive — and clouding up the differentiation serves little beneficial purpose. |

Although a good post by Canarsie, it is mind boggling how much pro bloggers the mods in FT are. You can attack another poster and it will go unnoticed, but say anything about a blogger and some mod will be quick to jump to the “cause”. I am glad I am able to post this info that a lot of folks probably know but never posted there because it would inevitably get pruned by the mod-mafia.

Maybe this explains why they are awfully touch towards me lately;-)

Great (and not so great) minds think alike. Right before I read your post about Andy and Becki, I had commented on Daraius’ blog that I thought he should be a little more selective in his “interview” series. It’s nice when newbies join the Fraternity, but I’m really not that interested in what they have to say until they become experts. And that takes time.
That said, it’s probably a better topic than a typical rehash of a credit card offer!

I am not sure he is very selective, he offered me an interview spot right after I started my blog:-)
