This blog started way back in 2012 focusing on my crazy hobby addiction of traveling with frequent flyer miles, hotel and bank points. It has since evolved to curated posts featuring the best web content along with my commentary.
This is a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it while it lasts.
BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
I posted every single weekday last week. Just to see what that did to blog traffic. Well, the stats are in and, shockingly, traffic was a tiny bit down. So, we are back to the Friday mega post. Great content I curate to keep you busy for the week ahead.
There has now been 44 days since this blog had a credit card sale!
On November 12 this blog completes 12 years of life. I am going to try to take a break at that time most likely.
And of course thank you for reading my blog. Especially to long time supporters, all nine of you. And thank you so much to reader FullMoon who left me this wonderful comment:
Hope you take heart in the fact that many out here appreciate what you do but don’t want more emails and don’t do youtube/Insta/TikTok/etc for the most part. Also, many of us have had the so-called one-per-lifetime cards :::cough::: and also might jump on some cards that aren’t referrals. That said, we think of you when we do apply for cards that are offered via your site…it’s just that it’s at a far slower pace than in a previous decade. We don’t get cards from view from the ka-ching or its backslapping ilk because we ain’t fools. You are speaking mostly to the choir, the cognoscenti as it were. The megablogs with the clickbait are hoping to reap conversions from the unknowing hordes who think TPG et al is an authority. They don’t link to you because they don’t want their readers to be as educated about these subjects as yours are; it will mean that their readers won’t fall for such stunts as applying for a card when there is a better offer available. A sucker is born every minute on some of those other blogs, but that doesn’t happen here. Your goal of educating/entertaining/inspiring us is working, and has been working all along. But unfortunately it’s not as lucrative as not having a conscience about the info you deliver. Thank you, George, for having a conscience.
PERSONAL FINANCE
Yesterday, there was another market high. I think this was the 48th market high this year. Or is it 49, it is hard keeping track!
This is the BEST article that has appeared on the subject in my blog in a very long time: 20 Rules for Markets and Investing. I agree with everything, bookmark it and read it in its entirety. And send it to the people you care about.
If you are worried about a stock market decline, maybe you should read this: Sticking With Stocks. And ask yourself these five questions:
1. How much money will you need from your portfolio over the next five years?
2. How much in new savings will you add to your portfolio in the years ahead?
3. How much of your wealth is invested in stocks?
4. How much could you potentially lose in a market crash?
5. How bad is the economy?
Look, there are always going to be people who bitch. About everything. And there will always be some very rich people and some very poor. I mean, you can try communism where almost everyone is poor while the very few at the top are laughing all the way to the (sanctioned) bank, looking at you Vladimir. Anyway, at the end of the day (how did this expression come about anyway?), what has taken place in the US is A Staggering Amount of Wealth Creation.
Today, Americans are worth more than $154 trillion (and yes this is netted out for debts). We’ve gained $100 trillion over the past 15 years. Since the first quarter of 2020, households have added $50 trillion in wealth.
But, more importantly: On a relative basis, the bottom 50% has seen the biggest wealth gains:
SCAMS/CRYPTO/AI/TECH
To satisfy the hunger for power, it looks like tech companies are bringing back nuclear plants around the US. And I see no one stopping them. I hope this does not come back to bite us all…
One of the most ridiculous characters in the whole crypto FTX saga has been the FTX executive Ryan Salame. Who basically would not just shut the phuck up online. A 19 year old kid who got his first job at FTX and then you would not believe what happened next. And got involved with a crypto policy advocate to become a supposedly Washington power couple. Maybe he will shut his mouth in prison for the next 7+ years but I doubt it, some humans’ asshole genes are strong. She may join him soon too. The Endless Downfall of a Crypto Power Couple (bypass paywall). From the New York Times.
He is apparently unable to stop talking about the company. He has posted hundreds of times on X since his sentencing, airing old grievances. At times, he has defended Mr. Bankman-Fried and attacked Ms. Ellison, who was the FTX founder’s on-and-off girlfriend. “If some crazy woman becomes obsessed with you and then destroys your company that’s 100% your fault?” he wrote this month.
Molly White with her latest newsletter update with all things crypto. Which I find a must read. She brings up the asshole Salame dude above and how he tried to postpone his reporting to prison date by claiming his face was bitten by his dog and then the same day he did an interview with Tucker Carlson without any signs of injury whatsoever. And the judge making fun of him that he can always use the prison’s medical facilities for his injuries lol.
Since I am in the wealth management industry I found this article about the guy helping Google’s Larry Page invest his billions fascinating. The secrets of Larry Page’s money man. Who is now trying to take the family office business to a different level powered by some tech of course. This has been tried before. The whole point of the family office is to keep a low profile. Don’t be surprised if this Wayne Osborne guy at some point is out of Page’s inner circle.
This blog is not going to blog itself. I rely on my readers helping it grow as I don’t have time to do any promotion/marketing. Which leaves the content clean of intrusive sponsoring posts and stupid ads and stuff like that.

Amazing photography from the 2024 Epson International Pano Awards, enjoy.
I bet you don’t know the history of cocaine. At first it was lauded as a wonder drug. Until the truth slowly came out, fascinating read. Cocaine: a cultural history, from medical wonder to illicit drug.
There was a movie fairly recently with some foodie snobs finally making a reservation at a very exclusive restaurant with a celebrated chef. Who goes on to kill them all while exposing their fakery and stuff like that, loved that movie and its name escapes me right now. Reading this article certainly reminded me of that movie: Can Your Stomach Handle a Meal at Alchemist? At the Copenhagen restaurant, diners are served raw jellyfish—and freeze-dried lamb brain served in a fake cranium—while videos about climate change swirl on the ceiling. Is it “gastronomic opera,” or sensory overload?
A meal at Alchemist costs at least eight hundred dollars a person, and the basic wine pairing brings the price to more than a thousand dollars. The most exclusive experience, called the Sommelier’s Table, goes for twenty-three hundred. [Pay with your Chase Sapphire Preferred card you guys]
…dishes like The Scream—a postcard-size reproduction of Edvard Munch’s canvas made out of kudzu starch and milk proteins, and flavored with saffron, Cointreau, licorice, and mandarin—and suitably disturbed by the caged chicken.
…served Danish Summer Kiss, a silicone replica of a human tongue, smeared with tomato-and-strawberry tartare and garlanded with flowers, he bit into it rather than giving it a French kiss, as the servers advise.

I have a dream. Visas everywhere are declared illegal. Yeah, right. Until that day that will never come in our lifetimes: Do I Need a Visa? If You’re a U.S. Citizen, You Do to Visit These Countries.
First question that popped in my head, I can’t help it, was “Can we use points to stay for free?”: Chef José Andrés Is Famous for Disaster Relief Kitchens and Michelin Stars. Now He’s Opening a Hotel.
How can this dog make it up there to bark at birds? Astonishing moment a dog is spotted at the top of 455ft Great PYRAMID of Giza after climbing up to bark at birds. I am so suspicious of scenes like this, there is so much fakery online and I wonder if this guy set this up somehow. And, dear God, don’t die for that killer (pun intended) Instagram shot!

The big news of the week was Alaska Airlines announcing a bunch of changes in the Mileage Plan for 2025. We are so used to devaluations lately and sold as enhancements so I was wary of this happening again. And I must say I was mostly pleasantly surprised about these changes. Some other bloggers agree with me: Alaska Mileage Plan updates: Earn status with award flights, credit cards, shopping portal spend & more (+ other changes). This airline always did things differently and it appears they are making an effort to differentiate this program from their competitors. Hopefully, the change in the momentum towards their own members spreads and I definitely don’t expect this to happen. And it looks like the Hawaiian Airlines credit cards run by Barclays will eventually become Alaska Airlines credit cards run by Bank of America. Both of these banks are so hard to deal with. Maybe grabbing one or both Hawaiian Airlines credit cards makes sense but I have a long trip coming up so I am not going to worry about it for now.
Good summary: Catching up on 2 weeks of big miles & points news.
Good reference: Airline Award Ticket Change and Cancellation Policies. Love it how we can mostly book awards now and cancel later without any fees whatsoever.

Well, the three Chase Southwest personal cards are no longer offering 85k Signup Bonus, they are down to just 50k again as usual. But there is one Southwest Business card that now offers 80k SUB. You can find them all here if you decide to apply to secure the coveted Southwest Companion Pass, still one of the best deals alive in this hobby. Earn a Southwest Companion Pass Through 2026 With Southwest Credit Cards.
I had an Alaska Airlines award reservation in December returning from the New York City area where we usually spend the holidays. Only 4,500 miles flying on partner American Airlines (as British Airways Avios now costs 12,000 miles lol). I needed to change it to a day earlier so I just booked me another one, same price. And I canceled the former award. Easy peasy. And I booked this way after following the instructions in THIS post and managed to get my AA # and Platinum Pro status (free until January 4. 2025 due to the AA-Hyatt Globalist recent promo) and got me a nice seat (and a free bag if I need it) #winning.
Son is flying for business to Singapore from Honolulu in Business class. Lucky guy, I missed this from my corporate days. Other than that, I don’t miss much else lol. He needs more elite qualifying miles to requalify as Alaska Airlines MVP Gold and I steered him that way. It was good that Singapore Airlines airfare was more than double than any other airline. He has ended up flying Korean Air one way and then JAL and Hawaiian on the return. I have advised him to triple check that his Alaska Airlines frequent flyer number is indeed in his reservations. He thinks I am being paranoid seeing that number in his reservation with the travel agency his company is using. So, let’s see if this works out. Is this going to be another “you should listen to your parents” lesson?
I have gardened all my reservations. All except the Air Canada Aeroplan award flying back to Detroit from Kuala Lumpur on Turkish Airlines business class, I will get to that shortly. My outbound ticket booked with Capital One miles have me flying on a Jet Blue marketed ticket on Jet Blue from Detroit to Boston and then flying Qatar Airways to Doha and on to Bangkok. I tried to see if I can get other miles than JetBlue and it was an ordeal actually and figured out that the best thing to do is stick with my JetBlue number. Oh well, it is what it is. Sometimes you need to sacrifice a few things flying for free. 🙂
We have a HOT new credit card offer for the Chase Sapphire Preferred offering 60,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points AND a $300 statement credit on travel through the Chase travel portal in the first year. The minimum spend is $4k in the first three months. No affiliate link yet, it is expected sometime very soon, maybe later today. You can always subscribe to BONUS OFFER NOTIFICATIONS. The annual fee is $95. The CSP earns 3x on dining and streaming services and online groceries, 2x on travel, 5x on travel booked in the Chase travel portal and 1x on everything else. Primary car rental insurance which is great. No foreign transaction fees. 10% anniversary bonus. $50 annual hotel credit. At the very least, you can cash out at 1 penny per point and get yourself $600. Or redeem your points booking travel in the Chase travel portal and each point is worth 1.25 cents. Meaning, 60k points is worth $750. Add the easy $300 travel statement credit and at the very minimum you get an easy $1,050 bang for the $95 annual fee. There is more when you add the points for the $4k minimum spend to trigger the Signup Bonus of course. And you can always do better when you transfer to airline and hotel partners with a bit more work of course. All four of us in my family have the Chase Sapphire Preferred card. It acts as our anchor Chase card, it is the card we keep and use and yes pay the annual $95 fee every year. With this card we can transfer Chase points out to airline/hotel partners, mostly Hyatt, United, Aeroplan and Southwest sometimes. We must have this card (or the Chase Sapphire Reserve or the Chase Ink Preferred) to be allowed to transfer points out to partners; this is why I call the CSP our Chase anchor card and it is a keeper.
The affiliate link from my favorite bank is now HERE. And this is my REFERRAL LINK, thank you.

If you are interested in the fight between Southwest Airlines and “activist” investor Elliott Investment Management, here is what is going on: I Don’t Understand This Plan, but Elliott’s Showdown with Southwest’s Board Now Has a Date. The answer is simple really, Elliott does not give a phuck about seeing Southwest succeed in the long term. Only for a quick buck.
Went to an Indian wedding over the weekend. They do weddings differently. You know they are different when they apologize for not managing to secure the elephant transportation in time so the groom had to settle riding a horse instead.
It has been a while since I went to see a movie. Nothing excites me looking at the current showings, sad.
One of our best Detroit Lions players, Aidan Hutchinson from the University of Michigan, had a devastating injury in the last game. Lost for the season and likely his so promising career is not going to be what he dreamed of. And he is one of the nicest guys too. My daughter knows him and she was telling me how Aidan’s girlfriend (mutual friend) told her she was watching that game and….you just never want to be in this position ever. I am glad I did not let my kid play football, so violent. But also hard not to watch, especially when the Detroit Lions are so good after so many years of complete humiliations! Super Bowl or Bust, do it for Aidan!
Some of you asked for a pic with my beard, here it is, be gentle. Also, this is why my YouTube channel has 34 subscribers, I think it’s my face woohoo.
Speaking of YouTube, there is a huge YT community of creators who I guarantee you when the banks stop paying sales commissions to sell their credit cards they will all vanish pronto! How can I compete with such production expertly selling the Capital One Venture X card like this guy who has almost 79,000 subscribers? If you watch the video and you do not have this card, you know, you can get it HERE and support my face plastic surgery woohoo. And you can be first in 44 days…can’t believe this is happening! Just had an idea hit me. I post after each credit card sale, hmmm.

I was thinking you earn the Hyatt points by riding a Peloton for 20 minutes in a Hyatt gym?

Happy Friday to all! I guess only three or four more posts before George takes a hiatus? Enjoy TBB while you can, folks!
PSA: Lots of places in Western NC are open for business and almost all the major roads (I-40 near TN being the big exception) have been reopened. Tourism is way, way down and October is one of the months they rely on to pay the bills. If you’re in the area, consider a visit to the NC mountains.

Full Moon is right!
The links today are particularly good. I didn’t want to wait to read them.
GeorgeTBB says
Of course FullMoon is right 🙂 But I am tired, it takes hours to bring this blog to you guys. Even record coffees sold does not really cover the full costs and have to pay to bring it to you, after 12 years and going 44 days without a single credit card sale, well, I get the message loud and clear.
Will my second card vendor ax me before November 12? This is what is down to…
Already thinking how to use my extra hours. I think I will hire a personal trainer. And go for foot massages because it is the only way my feet feel better these days. Or maybe I even get a Peloton lol.
I am going to dedicated half of all cc sales proceeds to a North Carolina tourism board organization, hurry!
Time for physical therapy, again. Paying and not really seeing any improvement, it’s nuts.
Carl Pietrantonio says
Writing from my hotel room I gotta leave shortly so saving all these great links to read later and over the weekend. Not a good trip, just took off to use up expiring FNCs. Feh, but still nice to get away from the house and all the distractions there. Health finally getting to the point to start to plan some good travel for next year (with fingers crossed). But I think everything long term out has to no longer be non-refundable, just in case. Sigh!
I echo Full Monn’s words even though I cannot write that well. Your posts are always the best and I do appreciate them. Whatever you do, I hope you do not completely disappear from our midst!
Have a great weekend!
Christian says
I have to say that even if it’s only dozens of people who are faithful readers that you’re still making a difference to them, which is more than the vast majority of people (myself included) can say. That may be cold comfort but I’d give a lot to be able to genuinely make that claim. Anyway, thanks.
GeorgeTBB says
@ Carl and Christian: Thank you, you guys are in the group of nine.
I have the domain for many years, full disclosure.
But I am tired. I have been doing this for 12 years!
Day 45 for the streak from hell.
I will try to post next Friday.
GeorgeTBB says
And the day continues losing another email subscriber. That hurts, every single time. Just too many pain points and way too many hours spent here, it just blows.
Will get to November 12.
Vicky says
Another that votes in agreement with Full Moon. Better to be playing to a select audience who enjoys your links to articles with a side dose of miles than the mindless masses who feast on the click bait. Take a break, enjoy your trip to Asia and come back and entertain your loyal followers with interesting articles to read.
GeorgeTBB says
Thank you. That is the plan right now. My fear is when the habit is broken…it will not come back, I know myself. This is why an occasional coffee or credit card or amazingly delightful comment like Fullmoon’s kept this baby going for so long.
Meanwhile, I see the Frequent Miler team now going for the 1 million mile SAS bonus. Hey, it is content! I am not going to link to that crap, why endure this ordeal my god!
Meanwhile, son really liked Korean Business Class HNL-ICN, he is continuing to SIN. Staying at the Westin, he told me “sorry, you do not like Marriott Bonvoy but it is the best location”. I am going to let him slide lol. Let’s see when the Alaska miles will post…
Hit another weight low for the year today. By just 0.6 lbs but hey, I’ll take it.
Gotta run, well nope, walk. With my toes down, basically, I need to establish a whole new way of walking and standing with my toes touching the ground. Numbing is way down, maybe finally seeing progress I think.
This is my baby here, it is my escape dealing with the world and stuff like that.
Holy crap, I should not have looked, portfolio is way up for clients and me wow!
Behave everyone and enjoy the weekend.
Nick @ PFD says
“My fear is when the habit is broken…it will not come back”
True in my experience.
ABC says
FM’s audience no idea how quickly they’ll burn 1M Eurobonus points. In the spirit of skypesos, redeeming on SAS business class is very, very expensive.
Don’t do this just for the points.
GeorgeTBB says
The fear is real.
Yeah, I agree on the 1 million SAS promo. Must be nice for FM to pay full time salaries to so many employees. And me here can’t even spare a single credit card sale in so long!

In the 90s SNL had a skit about Lebanon promoting tourism to the country. There was someone in front of a bombed out building with explosions in the background and speaking to the camera “Come to Beirut, where every days is the Fourth of July”. I never forgot it.
I watch the Greek press, I subscribe to Greek TV channels with Dish Network. And I gotta tell you, what my eyes are seeing of the destruction is shocking. And it takes a lot to shock me. Not seeing such scenes make it to CNN.
Same old.
GeorgeTBB says
The streak from hell is now 47 days!
Clarification about that: Capital One cards get credited once every, well, there is no pattern. They just show up suddenly and can be for credit cards sales months in the past, it is weird. I had a reader emailed me he got the CO Venture X recently, maybe this one will show up in March 2025 lol.
I was going to watch my hometown soccer team play yesterday but they switched the game to this morning and it starts right on when I start a client meeting, phuck!
I think what is contributing to the streak from hell is the lack of any BIGLY cc SUBonuses in the past month or so.
I am thinking when I get kicked out from the 2nd cc vendor due to low sales I turn this to a miles and points rant blog again and just use personal referrals and just take no prisoners. You know, like the good old days. And all the non miles stuff goes into a Substack newsletter every Friday. Or something like that…
You see all the dedicated people at the gym at 6 am, bunch of winners. But not in blogging lol.
Oh, one more thing. Sunday night weekly blog traffic stats was one of the all time low. Very uplifting smh.
On the positive side, Korean Air business class miles for the first leg of son’s flight HNL-ICN posted just fine….waiting for the second leg ICN-SIN, that will get him to about 38k Alaska Airlines miles, just short of requalifying for MVPGold (takes 40k).
Have a great week!
GeorgeTBB says
Day 48!
I have been showing the Extraordinary Travel Festival info next month in Bangkok and I have not gotten a singe signup with my discount code. Boy, do I feel like a loser!
Watched Saturday Night last night. What an awful movie, a huge disservice to the SNL franchise, wow.
Taking Mrs out to a fancy restaurant for her birthday tonight.
I feel YTubers are desperate trying to sell plastic lately. Or anything they can find. I sense some quitting soon #cough
GeorgeTBB says
The streak from hell is OVER, it took only 48 days! The blog stays alive as I have stated that if a whole calendar month goes without a single cc sale it automatically spells instant death.
Thank you to the reader who got a Chase Ink Business Unlimited card. Going to grab us more of them Ink cards after we return from Asia in December #hint
Bigly post coming on Friday.
Record # of coffees sold still do not account for even 2/3 of a single cc sale like the one above #hint Perverted economics, that is why there are SO many “experts” existing to pump plastic online. The lack of bigly SUBs lately now got them to really go low, like pumping Disney Visas and the “new” CO Savor card with, please sit down, a higher $250 SUB, up from $200 LOL.
Anyway, this is my baby here. I have amazing links on Friday. One involves a nightmarish incident online (nope, it is not a stupid clickbait link, it is truly inspiring). Another one has a blogger retiring after 17 years proclaiming the end of the blogging era…oh oh. And other educational/entertaining/inspiring stuff.
It took 48 days to just not be greeted with a fat $0 checking my cc conversion page, just wow!
Had a fancy dinner last night with birthday girl. It was great. When the bill came though, we are both like, ok, it was nice but not that nice 🙂 The frugality dna is still strong lol.
