QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Diversify!” – Me
MUST READ GEMS
Best thing I read last week:
The New Cool Thing: Being Human
By the way, this blog is still here by just one human.
PERSONAL FINANCE
Some things I am definitely in agreement with: Stick With What You Know.
The things we do know:
- Even those with considerable expertise cannot hope to forecast the unfolding consequences of geopolitical events.
- Predicting the first, second, and third-order financial market impact is even harder.
- Short-term volatility in markets is unlikely to have a predictable impact on long-run outcomes.
- High real returns for holding equities over the long term are compensation for bearing short‑term volatility.
- At some point in the future, equity markets will decline sharply because of some unforeseeable negative occurrence.
- Humans often hugely overweight high-profile and salient risks.
- Humans make poor decisions when emotions are heightened.
- Diversification is the best protection against an uncertainty.
Another one on Health Savings Accounts: HSA Tips. It lists all the basics and of course the triple tax advantages. And something to watch out for:
Per Publication 969, if your spouse is the designated beneficiary of your HSA, it will be treated as your spouse’s HSA after your death. If your spouse isn’t the designated beneficiary (e.g. your child is the beneficiary), the account stops being an HSA and the fair market value of the HSA becomes taxable to the beneficiary in the year in which you pass away. This is why tax free HSA dollars should ideally be spent before passing down an inheritance due to tax inefficiency.
Another gem from Jason Zweig at the Wall Street Journal: Your Investing Strategy Is Great, So Long as You Don’t Actually Trade Anything. Must read imho, be careful out there. Always remember:
The financial world is full of people and firms claiming that they have the secret, the magic key, the holy grail, that will enable you to beat the market. In theory, they’re often right: It isn’t that hard to outperform on paper. In practice, though, you can’t avoid the frictions of trading costs and taxes and inflation. Before you make any significant move in the market, always estimate what your net-net-net returns would be after paying those tolls. Chances are, the theory won’t stand up after it collides with real-world costs.
And hold back from making predictions about markets and geopolitics. Ponder this:
CRYPTO/TECH/SCAMS
There is a special place in hell for fraudster pastors. Well, not sure if it actually exists but it should. For this guy: The Georgia Pastor Accused of Defrauding the VA of Nearly $24 Million. The founder of House of Prayer held himself out as a prophet. Former members of the church say he used fundamentalist teachings to manipulate them. Your stomach may turn if you read this, you have been warned!
I have been an Android Samsung cell phone user since, well, for ever. And I try to pick up some tips here and there. I really like this YouTube channel: The Simple Dad. The first two tips in this instructional video are amazing, how to fill/sign PDF forms and scan documents. Sometimes I wonder if I should stop carrying my laptop with me.
More stomach turning smh: SEC Dismisses Fraud Case Against Crypto Billionaire Justin Sun.
AI
Just a few today to share with you…
Pros and Cons of Artificial Intelligence
Video documentary on YouTube: The Thinking Game. The inside story of the AI breakthrough that won a Nobel Prize. Must watch imho about DeepMind.

First! Glory and Honor on my birthday! Lots here to educate and enjoy for the weekend! Thanks, George! Hope the kitchen remodel is going well!
Happy birthday Carl. As we know any birthday after 60 feels like a gift. Enjoy your special day.
Thanks very much Vicky! It’s been a good day so far and looks to continue to be.
Thanks for the link! Interesting about the variations on the “grab and go” lounges springing up. I remember getting interested in lounges when I flew from London to Eugene Oregon … economy of course.
Hope everyone is safe!
Hi George! First of all, some health advice: do NOT catch the flu. It’s done a number on our household the past few weeks. The flu shots didn’t help this year, sigh.
I’m taking my son to an admitted students day tomorrow at a college a few hours away from home and I have several hours to kill so I figured I’d watch a movie but toward what you were saying: there just isn’t a lot I want to watch.
Regarding the “How couples met each other” graph: I feel like we’re failing our kids. They shouldn’t have to use dating apps.
Not sure if the cycle is same worldwide, but if you have the annual French Film Festival showing in your area at the moment there are some good movies there worth seeing.
George, It may be an illusional but it feels like 4.2 million is a magical number of points for you which you never seem to move below. Middle East activities have changed a lot as means for us we will stick to Asia Pacific and domestic for the rest of our travels in 2026. One day we will be able to look at our points spreadsheet and see a balance close to zero and pat ourselves on the back for a job well done.
Interesting about HSA’s.
The Cap1 card for 200K sounds great. I’ll have to look into their application rules.
@ Carl: Hey Carl, happy birthday one day late.
@ DML: Next addictions to conquer are Hyatt breakfasts and airline lounges. They appear to be very high on the too tough to quit list, like morning coffee lol.
@ Nick @ PFD: Trying not to get the flu, get better soon! Yeah, it’s been so long since I looked at my Fandago app to see what is playing in the theaters and I see absolutely nothing attractive. That chart I posted is just mind blowing. Just imagine the impact of AI on it, it may get a lot worse!
@ Vicky: You are right on that 4.2 Million number. If I retired tomorrow, it will be cut in half pronto. It is a combination of organic spend and now strategic cc churning, on much lower levels, sadly. AND, this is huge, just can’t find award availability lately too! At the same time, if I see balances go under 1 Million I have no doubt I am going to apply for more cards, whatever else I could get. I mean, I would go really low lol. Interesting watching how the Middle East Airlines are handling the war disruptions. As I said numerous times, we (and the world) needs to survive this US govt, only 1,049 days left omg!
@Christian: Thanks about Bali help, will see a little bit later this year what I would do. 200k, must be referring to the CO Spark Cash Plus card. If you need a link 🙂 It is $30k min spend in 3 months for the 200k pts. And you know what they say about CO apps, pray 🙂 I do have a link on the latest bank application rules here:

“There is a special place in hell for fraudster pastors.”
Aren’t ALL pastors (and priests and rabbis . . .) fraudsters?
Getting paid for teaching fairy tales to children and naive sheep is fraud in my book.
Well, I see your point and I am almost there. But I still think there are some pastors out there who at least try to do well for others.
1 card, 1 coffee month to date.
Why are we still here?
The end is near.
