I want to single out one article that blew my mind. We go back to the blog’s roots and travel to the Intercontinental in Kabul, Afghanistan:
Inside the Taliban’s Luxury Hotel
PERSONAL FINANCE
I have been around the wealth management industry for a while and there have always been efforts to separate investors from their money by appealing to their greed and excitement. Lately you hear a lot about Private Equity PE. One of the justifications people salesmen directly implicated in promoting “alternative” investments like this is that they magically diversify your investment portfolio. Well, sorry to inform you but Private Equity Won’t Diversify Your Portfolio. Love the tagline of the article, right on!
Investing in such funds makes sense if you want more risk and illiquidity — and are willing to pay for it. [Perfect!, be careful out there!]
Market is having another correction. Which is what it always does. And the permabears always come out swinging…until they get buried again when the markets inevitably and eventually recover. Have you wondered though Why permabears seem right even when they’re wrong? Article takes a stab at it…It will help if the financial media did not glorify these “gurus” when they finally get something right while causing so many to lose so much sitting scared in the sidelines…
I saw the movie Dumb Money. About the crazy Gamestop stock mania and how regular folks beat the bad hedge fund guys shorting the stock. Or something like that. The movie will not win any awards, the acting is very uneven and they do stretch what happened. I spent most of the time watching the movie shaking my head how these people invested gambled all their money this way. Just a short time later we have The Enduring Lessons of “Dumb Money”. Class warfare makes for a juicy Hollywood tale, but almost three years after the GameStop trading drama, hedge fund titans still rule.
“Dumb Money’s” parting missive is that “Wall Street will never be able to ignore retail again.” But the power of the little guys, while dramatic, was fleeting. Nearly three years on, this final sentiment seems mere wishful thinking from Tinseltown, the land of dreams.
Great chart: The $109 Trillion Global Stock Market in One Chart.
CRYPTO/SAM BANKMAN-FRIED/FTX/SCAMS
Another podcast with author Zeke Faux about his new book Number Go Up: Inside Crypto’s Wild Rise and Staggering Fall. Always fun to listen to, some wild stuff in it.
There was an article out there that got a lot of play how 95% of NFTs are worthless. For the record, it has always been that way, don’t fall for clickbait headlines.
I am starting to feel really bad for these parents, I must admit. Inside Sam Bankman-Fried’s Family Bubble. At Stanford Law School, Joseph Bankman and Barbara Fried specialized in ethics and social fairness. Now that their son stands accused of one of the largest financial frauds in U.S. history, they’re scrambling for legal escape routes.
I asked whether she had ever felt compelled to ask her son if he’d done any of the things he’d been charged with. She replied no—she didn’t need to ask. Her son was incapable of dishonesty or stealing, she said. “Sam will never speak an untruth,” she went on. “It’s just not in him.” [Well, with four FTX executives pleading guilty and all most likely blaming Sam, it would not matter much at this point I think…]
AI
For some reason, I don’t know about you guys, I worry about this: What Open AI Really Wants. The young company sent shock waves around the world when it released ChatGPT. But that was just the start. The ultimate goal: Change everything. Yes. Everything.
GEOPOLITICS
When you think of countries not well governed, one of them should be Argentina! Actually, the way they can be so amazing in football (soccer for some) while continuing to self inflict pain in its citizens is just remarkable. Argentina’s macroeconomic situation is even worse up close.
Argentina’s economy is an airplane in flight where people are so busy proposing new engine designs that nobody has time to glance at the altimeter. Those Argentine airplane engines are often designed with Theranos-style engineering, and it’s hard for passengers (the general public) to distinguish between descending and crashing, especially in the near-zero-visibility offered by Argentine political airspace.
And just like that, Nagorno-Karabakh is finished with Azerbaijan winning and Armenians fleeing back to Armenia proper. A stunningly sudden end to a long, bloody conflict in the Caucasus. Kind of sad but if you look at a map you would wonder why this took so long…
ODDZ & ENDZ
This section is going to bounce all over today, let’s start with The Most Expensive Homes in Every US State.
I had fun with this site, Radiooooo.com. Pick a country, pick a decade and sit back and enjoy the tunes it serves you.
Amazing photography at the Nature Photography Competition.
This is very useful: Life Expectancy of Pets.
TRAVEL
Made it to the one listed for Seattle last month. It was great, not sure about top 15 though. Anyway, all these lists are always subjective: The 15 Best Sandwiches in America.

RUNNING
What an awesome podcast with Lazarus Lake, the old dude who created the insane Barkley Marathons. Lazarus Lake on Endurance, Uncertainty, and Reaching One’s Potential. Very inspiring, even if you absolutely have no running genes inside you.
Last weekend I manage to walk/run 14 miles and 12. 2 miles each day. I am now tapering and barring another freak injury I intend to line up in the 2023 Chicago Marathon on October 8, wish me luck. At this point, every mile after 13.1 miles is going to be a bonus.
BUZZING
A section where I go on and on about some stuff that happens in my life and anything else that just does not fit in another section above
This is just amazing to watch: A camera recorded from start to finish how a bird built its nest and had its chicks.
I think we have the NBA Champions for the next three years! Milwaukee to acquire Damian Lillard from Portland in blockbuster three-team trade. Giannis and Lillard, wow!
We live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Our small town is not as small as it used to be, it is still growing fast. If you drive around you will see so much construction going on. And now there is even talk of a Sports Illustrated Resort coming, say what? Sports Illustrated Resorts eyeing Ann Arbor for hotel and conference center. I had never even heard of such resort before. Not sure if this is going to come to fruition but still, wow.
This blog started with a focus on miles and points and travel. It has evolved since then. Everything below deals with the hobby of collecting frequent flyer miles and points. If you are not interested, you can stop here, thank you.
MILES & POINTS NEWS/PROMOS/MY ACTION
I burned another 100,000 World of Hyatt points for four nights at the same Hyatt Regency Resort in Huntington Beach, CA for the 2024 Future Proof conference. I have also made another five night reservations at a few Category 1 Hyatts near me at 3,500 World of Hyatt points per night as I again aim to requalify for World of Hyatt Globalist elite status at 60 nights. I should be at 35 after the next Hyatt Visa statement closes, 4 nights in Chicago, 5 nights in Phuket, 5 nights in Bangkok and 5 nights in Cat 1 Hyatts near me at 3,500 points per night will get me to 54 so I need another six #developing. I do have reservations for 5 nights at the London City East Hyatt Place for next year but I think I am going to cancel this one because I just can not see me running the London Marathon at that time.

Many people tend to be shy in applying for business credit cards. And lately all the big Singup Bonuses appear on business and not personal cards for some reason. Blog businesses that act as bank sales representatives will say anything to get you to apply for plastic using their own affiliate links. Which means they will blog about ways to make you feel much more comfortable in getting over your hangup applying for business cards. In my household we all have businesses by the way #hint. Anyway, here is a post that is designed to make you feel more at ease stepping up to apply for business instead of personal credit cards: You Might Be Eligible for Business Credit Cards & Not Know It.

When mainstream publications post articles like this, you know that this hobby has made it to the mainstream: Why Capital One’s Venture Credit Cards Are Some of the Best Options for Frequent Travelers. Actually, I agree! With airlines keep devaluing their miles and just continuing to make it more complicated to use the miles you have earned, keeping it simple with Capital One cards, especially the personal Venture X, makes a lot more sense! Each dollar charged on the cards earns 2 points, period, no more mental calculations trying to squeeze every point, keeping it simple can be beautiful.
And another one: Capital One Venture X vs Venture X Business: Which is Right for You? There are some differences, the biggest imho being that the Business Venture X minimum spend to earn the 150,000 points is , gulp, $30,000 in the first three months instead of only $4,000 for the personal Venture X card. Please support the blog by getting your credit cards HERE, AFTER you decide this makes sense for you of course.
Good moves for Alaska Airlines and JetBlue to poach some Delta elites I guess:
Delta elite members can receive a status match with Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan
What is remarkable about this is that both airlines require you to get their airline credit cards to match you. Which makes the Frequent Flyer thingie just ridiculous…
This is the credit card none of us will ever be approved of lol: The Billionaire Card Gives You Access to Money Can’t Buy Perks and Events [well, it better!]
ADVANCED
This is like a slow torturous death: Avios redemptions on Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines devalued with no notice.
Funny how bloggers who make a lot of money selling Delta credit cards are so excited about how Delta may soften the recent blow with the elite announcement making it impossible for the non paying road warrior type to requalify for elite status and limiting entries to Delta lounges. Meanwhile, Delta is pushing the knife in to the bone, ouch.

Great you are able to run again!
The new Capital One lounge at Dulles is going to make such a difference locally.
Thanks for the private equity link. I presumed that there are higher fees for non transparent funds placement so it will be interesting to see how this holds up when interest rates are actually positive in real terms.
David says
Good morning Buzz,
Fascinating post today. Any idea how many points for a free night at the Intercontinental Kabul?
some amazing photos in the links today.
Good luck with your training, and have a great weekend.
Nick @ PFD says
I got a PE pitch via LinkedIn from someone connected with my alumni association. I’m pretty sure I’d be the dumb money for that venture. No thanks!
I feel less bad for SBF’s mom after seeing those comments, she sounds like an enabling-a-spoiled-child type.
Have a great weekend and good luck with the training!
GeorgeTBB says
@ DML: I need to get inside one of them Capital One lounges. I am half walking half jogging at this point, my aim is to beat the bus in Chicago. Not holding up well, PE speaking that is.
@ David: Thanks again. I think that was you with the coffees, for some reason I can not log in to the Buy Me a Coffee site now, weird. The characters in the Intercontinental story blew me away, like the Taliban dude wishing to be up in the mountains fighting, he is so bored lol.
@ NIck PFD: I am getting some really weird pitches myself in Linkedin lately too. SBF’s parents meant well, no doubt. But at some point, you know, money and power and they just would not even imagine their little Sammy kid would go that far. Anyway, I think they are sticking with their story right now, what else are they going to do? Take it all the way, he did not mean it, he was sick with so many drugs, he relied on the other execs, blah blah blah…and keep praying for a miracle.
Christian says
When you make Globalist make sure to list your AA frequent flyer number in your account to get free AA miles. It’s 1 mile per dollar spent with Hyatt but beats nothing if you spend any money at Hyatts.
GeorgeTBB says
I am Globalist now and I have earned 26 AA miles from Hyatt stays year to date…I am a “big”spender 🙂
Nick @PFD says
Michael Lewis is apparently a SBF defender. Sad!
GeorgeTBB says
I think this guy was going to write a mega glowing book about Sam…and then, again, he gets lucky and boom, the bottom falls out of FTX and then he gets to rewrite the ending lmao. Amazing lucky streak wow. You bet Sam’s lawyers got an advance copy of it and they are all going all in to change the mind of one juror that this guy is evidently too clueless to run a lemonade stand!
I wish this was televised…
And then you have the mega phucking asshole Elon Musk insulting the Ukrainians…I am down to barely posting on Twitter anymore and I would rather walk everywhere than buy a phucking Tesla. I wish he gets on the rocket to Mars that I am sure it is coming one of these years this century…on a one way ticket.
On other depressing news, just once card conversion last month, in the past 2 out of 3 months this blog did not even cover its costs. And Monday traffic report showed the lowest in the past year. Obviously, this is not working. I guess writing about diarrhea and posting pics of naked people does the trick…I will miss you guys, getting closer to the end, what a ride.
Nick @ PFD says
Some good commentary on the SBF trial. I can’t believe this guy is enough of a sociopath / narcissist / whatever to even take this thing to trial.
https://twitter.com/JohnReedStark/status/1708836671813239215
GeorgeTBB says
That was good and I mostly agree.
But I can see defense playing the 60 Minutes segment with Michael Lewis saying SBF did not commit fraud…and, u know, with so many lined up tobsave their own skin this may convince that one juror? Long shot at this point but worth it for them I think.
Lawyers around this are getting super rich!
David says
Did you get your coffee?
Regarding the ridiculous SBF fiasco, I can’t tell you how many people I know personally that did a complete about face once they started making “real money”. Sad.
How’s the healing coming along?
GeorgeTBB says
Yeah, the SBF is one of a kind…
Did 4 miles walk/jog yesterday, I take a few days off to let the feet calm down but this morning I decided to walk 3 miles, bad idea! I am thinking to just take all these days off, line up on Sunday and take it a mile at a time (no pun intended) and see if I can beat the bus picking up the suffering ones way at the back…I should not be out there and I am okay not finishing…Will take a few months to let the feet calm down and get serious on that diet thingie to lose some weight…pounding with so many lbs is definitely contributing to the issues.
Decided to not drive, Amtrak all the way, about $250 for two, not bad at all.
In other news, the only way my blog can be salvaged is if Taylor Swift posts she reads TBB 🙂
ABC says
“ Turning the base up too high blows out your Speaker”.
No sympathy for SBF’s parents. “ SBF’s dad told his son he didn’t ‘know what to say’ — and looped in SBF’s mom — after finding he’d be paid $200,000 instead of $1 million by FTX, “ A tax lawyer isn’t this naive.
And what’s up with Michael Lewis and SBF?? His book “is a full-out defense of SBF. He spends more time questioning the intentions of the BANKRUPTCY LAWYER John Ray, than he does SBF. ”
GeorgeTBB says
On thatt one email, I don’t know, we are missing the context. What if they had agreed on a $1 Mil salary beforehand? Just amazed how FTX was run wow.
Totally agree on Michael Lewis. The guy fell for SBF 100% and if it was not for the implosion his book would have become a laughingstock. But he gets more sales because the implosion happened with all the publicity…but how do you rewrite it when it was going to be a full blown love fest for SBF? He can’t…so disappointed at him. And after I speak my mind on Friday I am sure he would unfriend me on Twitter, sorry X I mean.
Meanwhile, MacCarthy applied for a job at TBB but he was rejected lol. And a weirdo ex wife of Musk is suing him to save her kids…we are living in a simulation smh.
Last cc conversion took place on September 3 here…wonder which blog we are going to see it quits next!
Nick @PFD says
I just realized a friend of mine is running the same marathon you are! Good luck to all.
SBF update:

GeorgeTBB says
What if SBF marries Caroline Ellison in prison?
Also, out of a mega run of investing in absolute shit…that Anthropic one may actually work out, just amazing.
