Happy New Year George. I see you are getting that case of “Envy” somewhat under control and bashing others openly only one day per week. The therapist is working buddy. Glad you got some of it out of your system. But your readers appear to be tiring faster than you are recovering as they are leaving in droves. Here’s the latest Alexa figures for you at year end.
Congrats, yesterday your blog dropped to the 80,000th most popular in the US down from your best of 23,000 when people cared and were sympathetic to the issue, (2 full years ago:) and 60K last time I gave my report. OH by the way, no deflection needed with the toolbar comment you are about to add. I ran across a guy that had a blog with the ranking of 43K and he admitted his readership was only 200-400 per day “sans” toolbar. Gonna be tough George to monetize with a readership the size of a Junior Varsity choir, lousy links, worse payouts and readers that just don’t seem to be responding to your marketing huh buddy? I just don’t see how you, the Flounder of TBB, can devote all that time (3-6 hours per day) to about 100-200 readers after two plus years that aren’t even clicking on your links?
But thumbs up to the devotion to the remaining “angries”. Most have moved on and let the issue of commercialization go as I told you two + years ago. You were never going to change it.
Lower readership, fewer counters up to 5, (it’s only three now George), and the “Angries Forum” on FT is down to about 1-2 posts per day. The “Angry Ship” has left the building for over 99.9% of the hobbyists. But you do have a corner on the remaining market. I’ll give you that buddy.
And as for the readers getting paid $25 for an article, Good for them. Good for anybody that owns a blog, writes for a blog or contributes to a blog. At least they are getting paid for their efforts and based on the numbers, more people are seeing their work than you are. Your wage scale seems to be the bottom of the totem pole??? I wonder why!!!!! (exclamation points)
This comment is meant to be sarcastic only. I’d never “dish back” to somebody that has treated others so demeaningly over the years, assaulted his readers with continual tweets begging that they read his blog, pimped “payday loans” RoboForm and Amazon, while calling others out for cc links, and assaulted the eyeballs of his readers with ALL CAPS SCREAMING “CREDIT CARDS” every single day.

You do realize that by focusing on numbers instead of accurate content that you prove the points of your critics?
Your blog (ex-blog, semantics) is supposed to be an “expert” blog.
I question your credentials on being an expert if your blog is based more about selling than accuracy
My best friend is a travel agent. She speaks three languages, has lived and studied two years abroad, and has a Masters degree to back up her credentials as a travel expert.
As for “angries”? I call them passionate people that give a fuck about the world- people that believe travelling is about education and spreading peace. That they are people concerned about other people are getting duped; or worse, bad travellers that spread misinformation and intolerance. I.E. Becoming people that think the PHV is the center of Paris, and therefore France!
I’m angry too- because all I’m seeing are greedy people that see the world as nothing more than a tool. THAT should make one angry.
I read the blogs- I find them entertaining, but then again, I’m intelligent enough to do research (months of research, if necessary).
When one only views a reader as just a number, then one stops giving a shit altogether about quality and content. What a shame.
Oh, and Ingy- I find your postings to be highly degrading. Dripping in patronizing tone, as if we are all subpar humans lacking enough knowledge to understand the depth of your contempt for travel newbies.
I get the nuances in-between your attempts of mundane wit. And I am insulted by it.

Anyone who relies on alexa ranking looks like a complete fool considering how small the sample size is and how easy it is to manipulate.
Look @MIlevalue. Lol only 30 views for his latest post yet he’s 63000 alexa. Give me a break. I have sites with alexa 1 m+ pulling in 500 unique a day easy.
If Milevalue is at 63,000 does this mean TBB rates higher? From what the troll is saying TBB used to be at 23,000 and now it’s at 40,000 or whateveh. If TBB rates higher than Milevalue should I feel titanic? Or whateveh. I had a girlfriend named Alexia in middle school. Or at least I thought I did 🙂
Hey Buzz, can I offer some constructive criticism? You’ve done the hobby a great service calling attention to the money involved, what that does to content, and the worst practices of pushing inferior offers and failing to disclose conflicts. I think we’ve all benefited from that. So thank you!
I think this post is pretty funny, but uneven. You’re highlighting some posts that don’t seem wrong to me, and some of the snark seems off the mark. You lump together decent or at least inoffensive posts with the really bad posts, make it seem like all the posts and all the blogs are the same, and in a way kind of let the worst off the hook since they seem like the merely ok posts. Plus when the blogs that may be on your avoid list write something better than usual, more reader-focused than usual, you still snark at them you aren’t giving them the incentives to improve or at least put their readers first anymore the way you used to!

The statement about Lucky taking pics constantly on board is NOT unsupported!
The instances where OMAAT and VFTW wrote the two similar posts…it just jumped out at me as BOTH came out right after the other, seeing them right next to each other in Feedly not once but twice was just odd, that’s all.
I don’t see any improvement in the blogs in the Avoid list. Yeah both OMAAT and VFTW still come up with some decent stuff once in a while but the rest are just marketing factories. Even if I write positive I know fully well that it won’t last 🙂
Not sure of the next installment of TBB, it has been a very educational and fun ride, that’s for sure. I am making it up as I go along. Installments never end!

Here is the great thing. Although the facts are absolutely correct and in print RE the pimping on twitter, RoboForm, amazon links and payday loan ads, he will continue to call me delusional for stating the facts as he provides them on his site. No wonder the facts reveal a downward trend in readership. And when he reports his figures daily for income, if that is his BEST Year on the blog, he should start writing for others, It pays more. That’s if someone wants his copy and paste content, vulgarity and criticism of others??? And to suggest that I had something to do with his not being able to get links because I was somehow involved, is ridiculous. He screwed up his own future. He didn’t need any help with that one.

Please educate me on what Cretan wines are fabulous? I wasn’t so lucky in Cypress to find a good wine and switched to beer. Going to Heraklion in ’15 and could use a tip on what wine to look for. 🙂
I’m sure George is more knowledgeable than I am on the subject, but we have just been ordering the house red wine and have been happy with that. It is a light-bodied dry wine that goes as well with seafood as with meat. Our biggest problem is that we order a liter and it is more than half gone by the time the food comes.
I am no wine connoisseur, I buy mine at Trader Joes for under $10 per bottle 🙂
I have never been to Crete actually but my brother owned a snack bar at a beach Near Iraklion in the 90s.

Matt you have an Alexa ranking of 8K and the number is declining as you grow your conglomerate. FTG is currently around 12K and holding somewhat steady. It is all public knowledge. This place has gone from 23K to 80K. Blogs that grow have lower numbers as they grow. My point is made and proven. And the number of blogs that have the toolbar installed is as meaningless as the trashing of others George continues, with a readership so small, it is like a pimple on an elephant’s ass. Spin it however you want. Readers are tired of the constant bashing of others and hypocrisy of his criticism while he pimps away, and continues to demean others. Lets just agree to disagree and quit wasting time.

I think Alexa is a cute name. I wonder if the founder’s name was Alexa and if she was as cute as her name.
I love the commentary from the masses without any knowledge of the facts or figures. Maybe someday all the numbers will come out. I dare say you will all be amazed.
BTW it takes just a second a day to get the TBB laugh, but I make sure to get my laugh every single day.

You don’t understand how Alexa works.
It tracks via the toolbar in a readers browser. Regular readers have no interest in Alexa because they aren’t attempting to use it to gain revenue from their blog. The only people who install Alexa are Bloggers, or a very small niche of interested folk.
As such, the decrease in the Alexa score does mean that readership may be down – but only from the segment that is a blogger. It means nothing to overall readership data.
This site might have gone from 1000 pageviews per day to 50,000 and if in the process it lost 50% of bloggers and retained ‘real folk’ then the Alexa score would have dropped.
This is why no marketing partner actually cares about the magic 100K number.

Thanks Matt. I really could care less but love having fun with my buddy. The info from a blogger with a 43k ranking and the admission it meant 200-400 readers is really all I needed. It confirms the Flounder of TBB is followed by so few it really is just a nest for the last few angries. Further confirmed by the huge drop off in comments he is less of a factor ( in fact not a factor) in the space than I had originally thought. It restores my faith in the hobbyists for rejecting the trashing of others.

You still don’t get it….
If you got 200-400 bloggers reading your site you might well get a lower Alexa score, as you’d have 200-400 people with a toolbar installed it has no relevance.
If you are trying to figure it out, look at FTG- does it really have only 100 readers a day?
