Another TBB post featuring the most eclectic links around the web such as the memecoin insanity, the anti-social century, the best zoos, new elevated IHG card offers, some tax season related items, the super high cost of bad financial advice, the Wall Street stripper, protect your home from fires, amazing photography again, getting bumped, best winter festivals and of course always all of the most important developments in the crazy world of miles and points at the lower half of the post. Enjoy the weekend and file your tax returns early.

This blog started way back in 2012 focusing on my crazy hobby addiction of traveling with frequent flyer miles, hotel and bank points. It has since evolved to curated posts featuring the best web content along with my commentary.
This is a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it while it lasts.
BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
I renamed the “My Action And Whatever” section back to “My Action And Blog Buzzing”. This blog always evolves…
And it is evolving to posting once a week on Fridays again starting next week. To align my time better vs the rewards this blog brings me. It does bring me psychic rewards and this is why it is still here since 2012. I am just going to stop there and was going to interrupt you with a long promo from my sponsor. Oh wait, there has never been a sponsor here. Or ads. Ok, enjoy this post, you have no idea how long it took and I would rather not talk about it.
I may be posting from Boston this weekend on my Instagram and eventually YouTube.
PERSONAL FINANCE
The 2024 tax season is upon us and I just put together a three night trip to Boston starting…tomorrow. I needed to get away for just one last time to mentally prepare to go all in. This will be year #32 since I became a CPA, wow.
So, get prepared by reading this: Questions to ask, and answer, before you tackle your 1040.
And get ready to start seeing these new K-1 tax forms: The IRS Now Knows a Lot More About What You Sell.
Anyone who earned more than $5,000 in 2024 selling tickets, musical instruments or other goods and services online should expect to get a 1099-K tax form this month. Online platforms such as StubHub, Etsy and eBay previously only had to send these forms to users who earned more than $20,000 in most cases…The threshold was supposed to be dropped to $600 in 2021…Instead, the IRS chose to phase in the change, setting the $5,000 threshold for the 2024 tax year, $2,500 for 2025 and $600 for 2026.
I used to post comments in Wall Street Journal articles. But even there it has become such a giant pit full of people just so deep into politics that is disgusting. I continue to post less online and I just focus bringing my blog readers helpful content and let it be. Anyway, you may have some strong feelings about this but don’t blame the government for placing this burden, blame these assholes:
One taxpayer audited in 2020 had more than $400,000 of unreported income for four years of answering questions [on the online platform JustAnswer]…As part of the investigation, the agent identified four JustAnswer users who appear to have failed to report their JustAnswer compensation on their tax returns. One is suspected of having unreported income of more than $1.3 million earned from answering over 86,000 questions.

I read this and it hurt seeing how poser financial advisers can harm people permanently like this: The Worst Cost of Bad Financial Advice.
This family explained that ~20 years ago, they received a significant lump sum payment. They reached out to a financial professional (a stock broker, e.g. Merrill Lynch or Morgan Stanley) in their town and entrusted him with their new-found money. That advisor recommended a single “hot stock.” You probably know where this is going.
Anyway, they were so scarred that afterwards they “invested” all funds they had left in a bank account, just brutal. If you call yourself a financial advisor and place it all in a single stock, I mean, what can I say? It should be a felony imho. Didn’t these assholes ever see this diversification table once in their training? Wait, all the training was sales training, yikes (table found here).
SCAMS/CRYPTO/AI/TECH
Ok, this is not a scam or crypto or AI or tech. But since the Personal Finance section above got pretty full, I am sliding it into this section: The Wall Street Guy Who Moonlights as a Stripper. This was fun to read! I applaud people who work hard and this guy has been doing it for a while keeping it secret from his coworkers at his $300,000 a year Wall Street job, nice. Anyway, he just turned 40 and is single and admits dating is hard, I bet. Wish him all the best though.
No, I am not going into how the US President launched his own memecoin two days before he came into the office. Not to be outdone, his wife introduced her own memecoin a day later. This may get crazier, which is hard to imagine. Hold my beer, FartStrategy anyone? Need more insanity? Here we go: Detroit pastor launches meme coin at Trump’s inauguration. Beware of your FOMO and brace yourselves.
Oh, wait. Maybe don’t give them what they crave: The New Currency is Attention. Stop scrolling and for the love of God stop clicking!
With people spending less time socializing, they are spending more time looking at screens. According to Statista, the typical American now spends over 8.5 hours per day consuming digital media, which includes the internet, social media, and streaming services. More importantly, this number has increased by 1 hour and 40 minutes per day (on average) since the beginning of COVID.
When a tax preparer has clients who call him the “Magician”, you know: Tax Preparer Known as ‘the Magician’ Bilked I.R.S. Out of $145 Million.
Mr. Alvarez, and a gaggle of employees who understood what he was doing, forged everything from medical expenses to charitable contributions to rental income, residential energy credits and more, according to the indictment.
This blog is not going to blog itself. I rely on my readers helping it grow as I don’t have time to do any promotion/marketing. Which leaves the content clean of intrusive sponsoring posts and stupid ads and stuff like that.

ODDZ & ENDZ
This is probably the most important article today: The Anti-Social Century. Americans are now spending more time alone than ever. It’s changing our personalities, our politics, and even our relationship to reality.
The share of U.S. adults having dinner or drinks with friends on any given night has declined by more than 30 percent in the past 20 years.
…solo dining has increased by 29 percent in just the past two years.
Today, the typical American adult buys about three movie tickets a year—and watches almost 19 hours of television, the equivalent of roughly eight movies, on a weekly basis.
Americans spent even more time alone in 2023 than they did in 2021.
The typical person is awake for about 900 minutes a day. American kids and teenagers spend, on average, about 270 minutes on weekdays and 380 minutes on weekends gazing into their screens…
The share of boys and girls who say they meet up with friends almost daily outside school hours has declined by nearly 50 percent since the early 1990s, with the sharpest downturn occurring in the 2010s.
Ok, I stop, this is too depressing…Going to drop this here and move on.
Since the link above was just too much, how about one that is harmless? Ladies and gents, I present to you: websites from hell. My son who thinks my blog needs a new design years ago probably thinks my website should be on that list lol.
With all the fires going on out West, maybe this will help some people: Protect Your Home From Wildfire.
This section is called Oddz & Endz for a reason. Where else would you go from depressing loneliness stuff to websites from hell to how to protect your home from fires. And now, we go to jokes from astronauts lol: Incredible! We Asked These Astronauts What It’s Like To Be In Space.
By Barry Wilmore, thank you Sir:
“You never know true beauty until you see Earth from space, or true terror until you hear someone knocking on the space station door from outside. You look through the porthole and see an astronaut, but all your crew is inside and accounted for. You use the comm to ask who it is and he says he’s Ramirez returning from a repair mission, but Ramirez is sitting right next to you in the command module and he’s just as confused as you are. When you tell the guy this over the radio he starts banging on the door louder and harder, begging you to let him in, saying he’s the real Ramirez. Meanwhile, the Ramirez inside with you is pleading to keep the airlock shut. It really puts life on Earth into perspective.”

TRAVEL
The joys of bumping…used to happen so much more often in the past. Overbooked Flight? What You Can Do if an Airline Bumps You. Don’t let it get to that, volunteer first. Assuming you are flexible with your travel plans of course. I have a routine that I still do, because I can’t help myself. I get to the gate an hour before departure, walk smiling with my boarding pass handy after the gate agent gets there and is ready, say a warm hello and crack a joke like “Would you need any volunteers today? I am very flexible all day today and I don’t want to leave XXXX city”. Sometimes it is a firm No. So then you know. But sometimes it is not so she may take your information right then or you say something like “I will be sitting here if you need me, thank you”. And sit as near as you can so the gate agent can see you. And then wait to see what happens. Have an idea of your flying options and then don’t be shy asking for high $$$ compensation(depends on initial offer of course), a seat up front, meal vouchers and lounge pass, etc. Good luck!

This blog started with a focus on miles and points and travel. It has evolved since then. Everything below deals with the hobby of collecting frequent flyer miles and points and maximizing your travel experiences. If you are not interested, you can stop here, thank you.
MILES & POINTS
Here we go, buckle up:
We start with a must read article from the Wall Street Journal blog reader Sam sent in: These Frequent Fliers Are Done With Loyalty Programs. I like the tagline: Travelers looking for better value play the field after years with one airline. As you should! Other than true business trip road warriors and business owners with organic spend in the hundreds of thousands/millions, why are you even striving for elite airline status anymore? Last time I checked Delta sells 88% of its premium seats up front and you expect an upgrade, come on! The days when we could achieve high elite status dirt cheap and getting upgraded on every single flight (Thank you Northwest Airlines Platinum Status for years, miss you sooooo much!) are OVER. And why are you even giving clicks to blogs cheering mileage runs smh.
Those backing away say the high cost of maintaining status isn’t rewarded with the same quality of customer service as before, and that rewards are harder to come by.
For airlines, winning back these free agents might not be easy to do. “Airlines need to remember that their members are emotionally attached to their airline status,” says Ross-Smith, the loyalty company executive. “Messing with that emotional relationship comes at a cost to the airline. That cost may not be felt immediately, but it does down the road.”
Good basic overview of several award search travel tools: Trying to Use Your Miles? The Best Websites for Finding Award Availability.
Maybe you can qualify for one of these? Hotel Elite Status Made Easy: Status Matches, Fast Tracks, and Elite Credit Card Perks.
A good overview of the different lounge options in this airport: Adventures in Washington National Airport Lounge Hopping. I visited the new Sapphire Lounge in Boston recently and loved it, check out pics from my visit in Instagram.
And wow this is going to be huge: Two-Story Amex Centurion Lounge Opening at Boston Airport. Good: 20,000 square feet. Bad: Coming in 2027.
Bookmarking this for a little while: Which Banks Send Out Tax Form 1099? (Discussion Post for 2024 Tax Forms). Every year there are surprises. I wish Chase would post these online…
Most of these do not do much for me but good to be aware of them I guess: 7 Favorite Hyatt Award Redemption Spots. And when Hyatt kills/ devalues them, blogs would post more content bitching about it smh.
TRAVEL REWARDS CREDIT CARDS
I still don’t understand why anyone does not apply for this card. And how Capital One Bank has not substantially nerfed it yet. How to Get Airport Lounge Access for the Whole Family with 1 Credit Card. Here is the link to apply for it, you can be FIRST this month to help this blog, thank you! My wife does not have it yet. I am saving it for that one month no one applies for a credit card in my blog so she can save it lol. To reiterate, this blog ends when it does not sell a single credit card in a calendar month or the second credit card vendor kicks me to the curb for “low sales”, whichever comes first. Ok, let’s move on.
For the recently elevated World of Hyatt Chase personal and business cards, see the details HERE. If you want to help the blog, please check these offers from my favorite bank HERE.
More elevated offers finally from Chase.
170k CHASE IHG Rewards Premier
Suddenly Chase came out and increased this offer from 140k points. The minimum spend is $4k in the first three months. The annual fee is $99 (not waived in the first year). You get a free night (worth up to 40,000 points) on each card anniversary. Automatic Platinum elite status. Card earns 10x points on IHG properties, 5x on travel/dining/gas stations and 3x on everything else. Once you spend $20k in a calendar year, you earn a $100 statement credit AND 10,000 bonus points. You also get up to $50 United TravelBank cash each calendar year. You get the fourth reward night free on any stay of 4 or more nights. You can earn Diamond status if you spend $40k on the card each year (please don’t). Global Entry/TSA Precheck fee credited in case you haven’t done this yet with another card. No foreign transaction fees. 20% discount on points purchases. There is another offer floating around online to earn 5 free night certs worth only 40k points each, pass. If you regularly stay in IHG Properties (like Holiday Inns) this is a solid card to get and keep. Other than that, if you like to diversify, this is not a bad haul (I think the highest ever points offer has been 175k) and the card pretty much pays for itself. If you want to help the blog check these offers from my favorite bank HERE.
100k CHASE IHG One Rewards Traveler
Just elevated from 80k offer. This is the no annual fee IHG card. The minimum spend is $2k in the first three months. Card earns 5x on IHG properties, 3x on dining/phone/gas stations/select streaming/internet and 2x on everything else. You earn 10,000 bonus points after $10k spend. You can earn Gold status after $20k in spend. Fourth night free on award stays. 20% discount on points purchases. No foreign transaction fees. If you hate credit card annual fees and don’t mind staying in a Holiday Inn a few nights for free, maybe this is a better fit? If you want to help the blog check these offers from my favorite bank HERE.
For the record, Chase recently changed the offers for these two Marriott Bonvoy cards:
The Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase and Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card from Chase are introducing exciting limited-time offers for new cardmembers.

All Marriott Bonvoy Bold cardmembers can now redeem points for a statement credit to cover qualifying travel purchases made directly with airlines or at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy®, up to $750 total in redemptions per year. For instance, cardmembers can earn $100 with a redemption rate of 12,500 points.
Please help the small independent blogs like mine continue to exist by supporting them with your CREDIT CARD clicks, thank you!
The 75K CAPITAL ONE Venture X card has a minimum spend of $4k in the first three months. If you like simplicity and looking for one (premium) card, I highly recommend this card (and yes, I have it myself!). It has an annual fee of $395 but it comes with an easy $300 statement credit for travel booked on its own travel portal, essentially turning it into a $95 annual fee card. But wait, there is more! On each card anniversary you earn 10,000 points essentially making it FREE! Every dollar of spend earns 2 points and flights booked on the travel portal earn 5 points per dollar. You get access to Capital One and Plaza Premium airport lounges and a Priority Pass Select lounge membership and, this is important, you can add FOUR authorized users FOR FREE who can also have their own Priority Pass Select airline lounge membership and, this is BIG, they can bring in unlimited guests with their FREE Priority Pass card! MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
My wife also got the 70k miles for just one purchase with the Barclay Hawaiian Airlines credit card. So, 140k Hawaiian Airlines miles have been transferred to our Alaska Airlines accounts, that was quick and easy. I am just going to park these two cards in my sock drawer now lol.
Maybe I transfer wife’s 120k Amex Membership Rewards points to her Alaska Airlines miles account (via Hawaiian). I think I am going to save mine in Amex and maybe use them when I buy a Business Class ticket with points later on to get the 35% rebate from my Amex Business Platinum card benefit.
I got my daughter a printer from Dell and the final cost came to $198.62. I failed capturing the full $200 credit from my Amex Business Platinum card you guys. Oh wait, I got me some Amex Points coming because I got to Dell after I clicked within my Rakuten account #winning.
It looks like this is the year Citi finally comes out with the Strata Elite premium card. Expect it around mid year. Then again, this is Citi we are talking about. Also, Citi is supposed to come out with a mini elite type AA card. You know, similar to the United Quest type card with a mid $200’s annual fee. Looking forward to both having juicy welcome bonuses to make me go back to that bank #developing.
Looks like the new Hyatt Regency at the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi BKK Airport will be a World of Hyatt Category 2 property, opens February 1, 2025.
About a 20% devaluation, is this news any longer in this space? Qantas Frequent Flyer program changes: Increased award pricing, more options for booking airline partners & more. No pain for me personally for this one, I have 0 miles in this account, phew!
More staff leaving The Points Guy Inc., how many are left there?
Not a single blogger linked to my How I Burned 2,027,816 Miles & Points in 2024 post. And yet, I bet many clicked and linked to the Boarding Area blog with this headline: “Woman Caught Masturbating on Plane; Blames Her Medication”. Insert &%!*#…breathe, breathe, serenity now, serenity now. Taking the weekend off to…Boston, details below 🙂
The kitchen remodeling project is just not moving. All these contractors are too freaking busy!
Orthopedic doc said there is nothing wrong with my feet structurally. It appears my issues are all nerve related which I came to this conclusion on my own using YouTube videos smh. He ordered an EMG test and said it will likely confirm this. Well, it looks like my marathon days are behind me for sure. I am up to walking 2 miles every day now and doing my exercises and watching my eating praying one day I will wake up and my feet feel normal as before. Don’t go too hard on training. It is what it is.
FIRST AWARD BOOKING OF 2025 DETAILS
First award booking of 2025 is in the books. Leaving early tomorrow morning! Boston here we come, details for another travel hacking adventure for a 3 night getaway to refresh and get my mindset ready for the coming tax season.
Burned 30,000 Alaska Airlines miles for two RT tickets Detroit – Boston. Flying partner American Airlines with one connection both ways. I was initially targeting the next weekend but that was taken due to committing to a friend’s Chinese New Year party. So, at the last moment all I could find airfare wise was Spirit Airlines and both Delta and JetBlue prices were north of $500, nope. Searching on American Airlines website returned no availability (pathetic as always). And here comes Alaska Airlines to the rescue once again. In a few days notice at 15k each, boom! They do stick you with a $25 partner booking fee plus some taxes, total $72. Decent times and connections. I just hope American can manage without disruptions, pray for us lol.
In a true TBB hacking style, we are going to spend three nights in three different hotels, for Freeeeee. Can’t help myself, you know. Still working to get over the mental block paying to travel woohoo. So, here is how:
First night at the Fairmont Copley Plaza using my complimentary Lifetime Platinum night. Used one complimentary Suite upgrade cert to lock us into the One Bedroom Suite. We will use the $100 complimentary Dining certs at the main restaurant for sure. Looking forward to see how this property handles the Welcome amenity waiting for us.
We move on to the Hilton Boston Plaza. Using one Free Night cert that expires in April. Probably not the best property to burn one of these valuable Free Night certs but with tax season ahead of me I said screw it. Going to use the Hilton Honors Gold elite dining credits, after of course doing my best to sweet talk the front desk person to upgrade us into a suite. And maybe eat another $50 to use the quarterly $50 credit with my Amex Hilton Surpass card. The question is, will I be able to finally burn some of my $50 Hilton gift cards in this property? Anyone knows if this is easy to do in this hotel and if the restaurant is worth it? Or maybe I should just stop eating lol.
Final night we move to the Cat 4 Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor. I used my expiring Cat 1-4 Free Night cert. When you use a Free Night cert you can not also use a Confirmed Suite Upgrade cert, that always confuses me. Only room available has two queen beds, come on Hyatt. Anyway, it looks good and looking forward to a big breakfast. And then hopping on the hotel shuttle to the airport to the BOS Amex Centurion lounge to continue eating as we think about saving the Sapphire Lounge Priority Pass visits for another airport, likely LaGuardia later this year, we’ll see.
I have a $50 HYATT FIND Experiences credit I tried to use to book a walking tour in Boston but it just sold out, boo. I may book one walking tour using Viator I think.
Between lounges and eating at the hotels we will likely not spend much money elsewhere. But open to suggestions to must do/see things nearby, thank you.

Welcome to the internet, you must be new here!

No comments on the FartStrategy find?
Nick @ PFD says
I saw FartStrategy yesterday and spent a few minutes wondering whether it was real or a hoax. I have been telling myself for years now that the bubbles we’re seeing are ridiculous and unsustainable. It’s going to end in tears at some point but I’ve given up on thinking it’s anytime soon. Things are so crazy right now. It dwarfs the dotcom silliness by a good margin.
GeorgeTBB says
>>>>>>>>>>I saw FartStrategy yesterday and spent a few minutes wondering whether it was real or a hoax.
Same! After checking out its Twitter feed, it is a hoax. So well done though, it is brilliant exposing the insanity of it all.
Things can always get crazier. And no one can time them. I am not sure it dwarfs the dotcom insanity…yet. But with the President pimping his own memecoin and now an executive order on crypto reserve (lol) out…brace yourselves. Soemtimes I wonder how we got here smh.

Sorry, I meant to say just fraud, not necessarily crypto fraud. Though maybe it’s crypto fraud, idk.

Thanks for the link to the zoos. I was stunned that I’d actually been to three of them.
I remember the Melbourne zoo had a sign near their bison and said it was nearly
extinct. We had a good laugh at that!

The zoo link barely made the cut. Always surprised what blog readers comment on.
No delivery thus week yet by the US Mail folks. Went to Post Office and was told it is due to weather and delivery is resuming today. Slackers!
David says
Good morning Buzz,
Thank you for the posts lately, just got back from Vallarta and another relaxing stay at the Ziva.
Great beach for whale watching, as there are many in that bay. Frankly I don’t think it’s worth the points since the devaluation, but for us it is close and simple. The hotel had a couple rough days, but the new GM owned it and comped sufficiently.
Carl, hope you have a great time again in Italy, so many incredible small towns.
Another lost year for Vikes and Lions fans, sorry Buzz(sorry, sorry Buzz…for your Canadian followers). I watched the first 7-8 minutes of the Vikes in the sports bar at Ziva and decided the sunset was better value. The incessant gambling angle has almost cured me of pro sports. Is it me, or does half the country see that most of our “role models” are grifters?
Good luck with your health Buzz, best to the family and thanks again for all the great links!
Carl Pietrantonio says
Thanks for the good wishes, David! So far I am going to Florence, Naples & Palermo. Not sure where the next stop is. Don’t have a return ticket yet, either!
GeorgeTBB says
Thanks David for the kind words again.
Yeah, Zivas were nice but not sure they are worth it points wise any longer. Hiltons are catching up fast on Hyatt imho.
I think both Lions and Vikings had great years…until the playoffs started. Will see next year. I will not be shocked if one or both teams have a new QB.
Carl Pietrantonio says
Wow, George! There are a TON of good reading links this Friday! Thanks! Gonna take all weekend to check them out! Hope you have a good time in Boston!
GeorgeTBB says
No worries, no test will be administered. Will do my best to stick with Friday posts going forward.
I made a hint to Miles and Memories not linking, even the 2M burning post. And what do they do? Same shit, some average links including to OMAAT again. The Boarding Area ass kissing is unparalleled smh.
