BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
I added a Warren Buffett section since the old guy was in the news a lot recently. I briefly thought to add a Sports section and then I changed my mind. No more tariffs section, just one graph:

More money to shelter from taxes next year: IRS unveils new HSA limits for 2026. Here’s what investors need to know.
Starting in 2026, the new HSA contribution limit will be $4,400 for self-only health coverage, the IRS announced Thursday. That’s up from $4,300 in 2025, based on inflation adjustments. Meanwhile, the new limit for savers with family coverage will jump to $8,750, up from $8,550 in 2025, according to the update.
Some interesting findings from the 2025 Estate Planning Report:
83% of Americans recognize the importance of estate planning—yet only 31% have a will. [If you do not have a will, STOP and go get one done NOW]
Estate planning is no longer just about people—62% of Americans believe pets should be treated with the same level of importance as humans in estate plans. [Belief is one thing, action is another]
A growing number of Americans are choosing non-family members as their executors, trustees, and guardians. [Interesting finding, not seeing it either. Please make it as simple as possible for the family person you will likely choose for such important roles]
Continuing on beating up on the push lately to shove alternative funds and more private types of investments to regular individual investors, here is another article on the subject: Suffering in Private. Don’t fall for the pitches, private funds suck in all areas below:
Performance
Illiquidity
Fees
Risk
Taxes
And you should probably be careful out there when even Edwards Jones can not resist the calling to help more clients make more money selling these smh: Edward Jones joins the crowd to sell more alternative investments.
Advisors sell and recommend alternative investments typically as vehicles that are not tied or correlated to the broad stock market, as well as a way to mitigate risk. Such investments, which include private equity funds, nontraded business development companies, and nontraded real estate investment trusts, also carry more risk and are designed for wealthier investors who can better stand those risks. [ I place the word “sell” in bold font for emphasis. Because the only way these advisors salesmen do this is because they can make a lot more money.]
WARREN BUFFETT
He is finally going to retire at the young age of 94. Actually not exactly, he just graduates from CEO to Chairman of his firm Berkshire Hathaway. He has been the CEO for 60 years. Which is just mind boggling. Of course, he now needs to ease into retirement lol. With so much money he never crossed that line that so many other billionaires in recent times did. On the contrary. Humility is in such short supply these days indeed. Warren again took questions from investors for over 4 hours in the annual shareholder meeting. There is press media content about the meeting and what he said again all over the web. Among the many things he said, I clipped the below and sent to my clients:
For a bunch of quotes: Wit and Wisdom from Warren Buffett. All are great, my few favorite ones:
“Everyone has setbacks, it’s part of life. You certainly have a setback when you die.”
“Patience is not a constant asset or liability. You don’t want to be patient when the time comes to act.”
“If you are in something in which you are going to lose you should quit.”
“I was born in 1930 and things got much more attractive over the next two years and I didn’t do anything about it. That was the opportunity of a lifetime and I blew it by worrying about the kid in the next crib.”
“Look around to see what interests you. I wouldn’t try to be someone else.”
I get asked often about real estate. And, you know, Warren answered it perfectly: Real estate is so much harder than stocks.
SCAMS/CRYPTO/AI/TECH
As a student of history, never forget that one MacGregor dude who managed to fool so many to invest in and emigrate to a country that did not exist. Yeah, really. The Poyais Scam: A Nation Thad Never Was. What is wild is that he escaped to France where he tried to pull off the same scam when he was finally arrested. And tried. And was acquitted, crazy.
In 1822 and 1823, two ships—the Honduras Packet and the Kennersley Castle—set sail for Poyais with around 250 settlers aboard. What they found when they arrived was not a thriving colony, but uninhabited, mosquito-infested jungle. There was no infrastructure, no government, and no sign of any settlement whatsoever. Stranded in a foreign land with no resources, the colonists quickly succumbed to disease, starvation, and exposure…By the time the survivors were rescued and taken to British Honduras (modern Belize), over 180 had died. Fewer than 50 ever returned to Britain.
Rest in peace hell Credit Suisse, the final chapter: Credit Suisse to pay $511 million for helping U.S. taxpayers hide over $4 billion overseas. The company was absorbed by UBS, you have been warned.
One of the most obnoxious assholes in the crypto space (there are so many) got what he deserved: Celsius’s Mashinsky, Former Crypto High-Roller, Gets 12-Year Prison Sentence. Of course appeals are coming and he too may get a pardon before he sees a prison cell. This is the guy who was bad mouthing banks and urging gullible people that his company was safer smh.
A pseudobank that touted returns of as much as 18.6% on customers’ crypto deposits, Celsius was one of the first big crypto companies to topple into bankruptcy after a downturn in the digital-currency markets began in the spring of 2022…Federal prosecutors had sought a sentence of at least 20 years for Mashinsky, who attracted customers—many of them ordinary investors—by urging them to “unbank” themselves and park their savings at Celsius during frequent appearances on social media…Mashinsky ultimately made $48 million in profits by selling his CEL tokens, and spent the money on personal luxuries, including the upkeep of his Manhattan penthouse and vacation home in the Hamptons, as well as the purchase of a third home in Texas, prosecutors said.
Can you imagine if Obama or Biden came out with their own meme coins? I guess not. Anyway, as expected: 58 crypto wallets have made millions on Trump’s meme coin. 764,000 have lost money, data shows.

MILES & POINTS
Here we go…
Is it just me who thinks that SAS did not get as big of a RP bang as it expected on its recent one million mile promo? Anyway, months later we get this published: They became millionaires – in frequent flyer points.
Deals are opening up, maybe we should thank tariffs? 5 Ways to Fly to Europe Under 40K Points Roundtrip This Year.
The latest Hilton Honors promotion to register earns 1,000 bonus points per stay, not night. How pathetic is that smh…
The latest IHG One Rewards promotion to register at least gives you a choice to earn 2k points every 2 nights or 8k points every 4 nights. Better but…where are all the juicy hotel promotions of the past?
Well, if you are going to shop online, at least pick up a few miles: United, American, Alaska Shopping Portal Bonuses.
We have The Standard Hotels joining World of Hyatt this month, nice. Several are in Thailand. Please let us know how they are if you stay in them.
Some practical realities revolving around Alaska Airlines: Sweet Spots and Realistic Award Redemptions.
I have been around this hobby for a very long time. And I still learn new things. I am kind of embarrassed to admit I did not know this: How to move Hilton points from one person to another.
TRAVEL REWARDS CREDIT CARDS
NEW: Huge 100,000 point offer on the card all four of us in my household have and keep from my favorite bank – literally the offer of the year in my opinion, even better than the 75k Capital One Venture X! (ENDING at 9 am on 5/15/2025)
TAKE ME TO THIS OFFER
A few words to any new readers who may be discovering this addictive hobby. What do we do? Well, we basically earn mega miles/points from banks willing to give us their credit cards and a huge signup bonus. Only if we promise to do the minimum spend required to earn it. Sometimes the credit card may involve an annual fee. Which is okay IF the signup bonus haul is way bigger. For example, the link above that earns 100k points can be worth $1,250 of travel if booked on the Chase bank travel portal. For an annual fee of $95. This is like buying a stock and guaranteeing a capital gain of 12.5 times, come on!
Of course, yes, your life will get complicated a little bit. You will need to apply for the card, get approved, wait for the card to arrive in the mail, set up your online bank account, start using the card and making sure you DO the minimum spend required to earn the 100k points, then pay off the monthly statements EVERY time (this is not negotiable), get that orgasmic feeling of seeing the 100k points hit your account (savor this feeling, it can be addictive, you have been warned lol) and then either cash them for $1,000, or spend them for travel worth up to $1,250 on the bank’s travel portal (each point used in the bank travel portal is worth 1.25 cents with this card) or transfer them to one of the bank’s airline and hotel transfer partners to possibly make them worth more than 1.25 cents per point (many of us transfer them out to stay for free at Hyatt hotels).
I don’t know why most people out there have big mental hangups about this, I don’t get it. If the minimum spend is too much, stop, this is not for you. If all of the above gives you big headaches, stop, this is not for you. If you don’t have a decent cash emergency fund, stop, this is not for you. If you carry credit card debt, stop immediately and don’t even read this section of my blog until you pay off all credit card debt. If you somehow do not enjoy travel deals, fine, pay full fare and enjoy it. If you hate travel, well, fine but you can still cash out $1,000 for $95, come on.
I wrote this years ago, it is still a good guide: So You Want To Travel For Free Like Me? Are You Sure?
I have a decent page for recommendations if you wanted to get deeper in this space: TBB MILES AND POINTS RESOURCES.
An updated resource: Credit Card Application Rules For Each Bank, All in One Place. I added this page to my resource page linked just above.
Here is a guide how not to pay for checked bags by having a credit card.
Check the direct links if you have these cards: Chase Q2 cobranded card spending offers: Earn 5x or 7x on groceries, gas & restaurants.
This, if true, pretty much solidifies the era of higher annual fees coupled with an increasingly annoying collection of coupon book benefits. Because, as Amex has shown in its stellar financial results, it works. We may not like it but, dollar wise, it works, sad. Chase Sapphire Reserve Revamp Coming Soon? $795 Fee & New Benefits.
I never really got into this Instacart thing. But if you do maybe this is relevant: Chase Adds New Instacart Benefits on Eligible Co-Brand and Ink Business Cards.
This is good for newbies: A checklist for cancelling credit cards.
Many good credit card offers have ended recently or are ending within the next week. Hopefully this is in anticipation of bigly offers for the spring and summer. Gotta love the US banks competing for us.
Capital One recently announced an expiration date for this card offer:
75k CAPITAL ONE Venture Rewards PLUS $250 Travel Credit (ENDS MAY 12, 2025)
More elevated offers finally from my favorite bank:
There is a new Chase Hyatt Business card that still gets you 60,000 World of Hyatt points but now it gives you Explorist status through 2/28/2026. The annual fee is $199 and the minimum spend is $7k in the first three months. Nothing to shout about. The World of Hyatt credit card offers have sucked for so long, come on Chase! You know where to find it.
No recent Amex and Capital One elevated welcome offers below that stand out to me right now…
Please help the small independent blogs like mine continue to exist by supporting them with your CREDIT CARD clicks, thank you!

MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
It is amazing how fast Amex credits you the Free Night Cert after hitting the annual $15k spend on its Hilton Surpass card, no waiting at all. I will try to use it at the Koh Samui Conrad later this year #winning.
Almost forgot that my wife had a $500 United travel credit for taking a bump some time ago. We had extended it several times. And it was expiring in three weeks. So, we burned it to send her to see son and her best friend in Honolulu in a few weeks. Who knows, she may even get to use those infamously hard to use United Club lounge passes from her United Chase Explorer card. Oh, the 80k United miles for the Explorer card have landed in her United account #keepwinning.
My Chase United Gateway card just keeps targeting me for non stop promos. Just saw the haul of 3x on groceries and restaurant spend for the first two months of the year hit my account. Along with another 5k for $5k spend. Right now I am working on a 5x on groceries/gas/restaurant spend promo up to $1k. Which coincides with a “spend $500 in May, June and July to earn bonus 750 miles for each month and then another 1,500 miles if done for all 3 months”. Wait, there is more, just enrolled in a $15k spend between 5/1 and 8/31 to earn 11k bonus miles which I may not go for. But I enrolled anyway, why not? Wait, there is even a Mile Play fly based targeted promo to book one United trip > $100 to earn 3k bonus miles. Any similar promos on my new United Business Card or my wife’s new Explorer card? Absolutely none. Weird. At this rate, I will easily hit the minimum $10k spend on my United Gateway card to keep the expanded award availability so I will have no hard feelings canceling my United business card after the annual fee comes due and after seeing the 5k bonus miles for pairing it with a United business card #nevertiredofwinning.
I saw in the news that the Trump administration was targeting immigrants to voluntarily self deport paying them $1,000 and free flights. I bet there was one of us miles enthusiasts who inquired back if they could earn miles on the flights lol. Just could not resist this joke, my kids like to make fun of me that I am the only one who laughs at my own jokes bwahahaha.
I need to get my act together and burn some of the ridiculous miles/points stash I have. The only thing that has cleared up is that we are targeting to redo our kitchen during the 2025 tax season, January to April of 2026. Don’t be like me, burn your miles/points! But if you are like me, diversify so when it comes time to pull the trigger you have options/flexibility. I have plenty of Alaska, American, United, Air Canada and even some Avios points in the bank. And of course Hyatt and Hilton points. I don’t see a problem at all burning over 1,000,000 miles & points again like I have done for so many years. And how in 2024 I managed to burn over 2 million miles and points #winningnonstop.
Actually, I may have some target dates to start looking and start burning. I may try some of the new Hyatt hotels in Bangkok. Like the new Hyatt Place Sukhumvit 1 property next to Bumrungrad Hospital and maybe one or both of the new The Standard properties. And possibly burning some Hyatt points for the Category 1 Hyatt Regency Resort in Kuantan, Malaysia and explore more of the western part of the country. Maybe even stop by to check out the new Park Hyatt in Kuala Lumpur (if it does open later this Fall) etc. Bottom line is if we want to keep my Hyatt Globalist elite status I need to get my act together and burn some Hyatt points soon! Still a long shot but I like challenges lol.
My daughter had a business trip to San Fransisco and she filmed her stop at the SFO The Club lounge. Which is considered the best Priority Pass airport lounge in the US by the way. Looks nice indeed.
For advanced miles & points enthusiasts, here is a YouTuber Traveling on Everyday Spend who I believe does an outstanding job, especially in his once a week summary report, here is the one from May 8. His summaries on the screen and all the relevant links he provides in the description are great. I have subscribed and will likely join his Advisory Board Membership shortly. Because I do mean it when I say support online content creators if you like what they do and want them to keep on doing it. Before they give up and do something else…oh wait 🙂
What the hell is going on this year with the NBA Playoffs? Both Indiana and New York being up 2-0 after winning both games in Cleveland and Boston wow. Anyway, giant respect to the one and only Gregg Popovich at Spurs introductory news conference for Mitch Johnson: ‘It’s time to make this change’.
As I get older I watch less sports. I do follow my Larissa, Greece hometown soccer AEL FC team since birth. And these days I watch some Detroit Lions games, national soccer team competitions (especially the World Cup), NBA playoffs full game highlights on YouTube, the Superbowl and the Champions League Final of course. But this year I made an exception and watched the Barcelona vs Inter Champion League semifinals and these two games ended up being the best ones ever in this tournament. Even the Wall Street Journal agreed: ‘There Will Never Be Another Match Like That.’ The Champions League Semifinal That Turned Into a Thriller for the Ages. Here are the highlights on that second game leg which has now become an all time classic.
Sometimes you just want to see a movie and leave the theater without thinking much about it. So this is exactly what happened after seeing the new movie Fight or Flight. Lots of dead bodies and drugs and all the action takes place aboard a plane. And it was so much fun. We aviation geeks would love some of the jokes, like the old lady in First Class who had to be escorted to Economy and was suffering complete shock lol.
I have pretty much retired from running due to feet issues that keep persisting. I never really slowed down as I always pushed things. It is obvious my body is telling me to stop so I intend to actually follow the “listen to your body” advice and see how it goes. I have my bike ready as the weather warms up. And kicking ass at the gym doing weights. Going to miss my marathon glory days, oh well.

Thanks for the link to your daughter’s video of the SFO lounge! You’re right, it
looks very nice.
The Delta Club at SFO is one of the best ones I’ve been to so lots of choice at SFO.
Thanos DML. Told her to make the video at least 4 mins long. It was 2.30 mins long so it went straight through to Reels instead of Videos. So this is why you did not noticed it most likely.
Where is everyone today?
Sometimes I feel like that guy in the Presidential debate who ran with Ross Perot who said something like “who am I, what am I doing here?”. I think people just don’t read long posts like mine anymore. Other than the nine of you.
Is this how Drew felt when he abruptly quit one day?
I’m here! (Carl waves Hi!) Winding down my day now what with being hours ahead on the clock. 48 hours or so until I leave Italy and off to Paris. Last stop on the trip, thence home.
I never heard of that Poyais thing before. Seems that no matter how crazy a thing is and sounds, some number of people will buy in and believe no matter what the risks are. Amazing stuff.
I’ll read more of the articles/links over the next couple days and as always, thanks for bringing all this together and sharing it with us all.
I’m up to 17 plates now, speaking of good memories from travel. I think I explained them before. 3 more to come in Paris and ship the last 5 home before heading back. Been a great trip and I still don’t get how so many people do not like the fun/challenge/mysteries of using Airbnbs. Being on such a long trip, the idea of hotels for the whole time just doesn’t work for me. I like to cok some of my food or if sick/bored/too cold/too hot, just staying in and having a rest day.
Anyhow, time to cook dinner, as a matter of fact! Thanks again!
