We go on yet another wild ride through the IHG Rewards Free Nights promotion fine print, learn how to fly with just 35k or 30k miles RT to Europe with US Air off Peak Awards, we say goodbye to Plink, vsit North Korea, American National Parks and Portugal. We also have awesome Personal Finance links & advice and the main draw (hope it is not lawsuits) the infamous TBB Blog Buzz where we lay it all out per advice of our therapist!

Loyalty Lobby reports that the free nights from the IHG Rewards promotion expire December 31, 2015 and terms seem “…to imply that they have specific award inventory reserved for these free nights awards and it can be drastically different from the points based one”. So please beware about this as a similar promo last year specific to stays in China did not turn out so well when so many tried to use the free nights in…expensive Hong Kong hotels.
Travel With Grant has a thorough post on how to Book US Airways Off-Peak Award Flights to Europe .One of the biggest miles bargains to Europe is flying on US Air off peak (January 15 to February 28), just 35,000 US Air miles (30,000 if you have the US Airways card, use his link to reward him for not plastering his post with his affiliate link like Milevalue or all the other bank servants would have done). Nicely done.
Loyalty Lobby again breaks news and reports that IHG Rewards has pretty much now sent everyone a stern warning that if you sign up for any promotions you are not entitled to…your account is due to having very bad things happen to it. Maybe they got sick of reading all these posts about how many points one can earn per each stay in their hotels huh? ^@#$^& Funny how a little later View from the Wing had a similar post. I don’t see LL being invited to any TV show as an expert….what a shame!
Plink folded. Effective September 11, 2014. Sad but not surprised at all. (HT to Milenomics on Twitter)

Arrival Miles Can Be Used to Pay Airline Taxes and Fees – Milevalue [ Holy Mother of God…How many times are we going to sell this card? Every day selling this card, every single day…running out of reasons to sell it so…we repeat the same old arguments…again…rinse…repeat…Ummm, this is not going to go well, I am already starting to get angry!!! ]
Top Canada Credit Cards: Aeroplan, Marriott Rewards & More – The Points Guy [ We will not leave a credit card market alone, we are expanding north! We have way too many Directors on staff, they need to eat too! About 15 credit cards to sell in just one post and here I am….gun shy of linking my crappy Amazon link an additional time on top of the standard disclosure on top of my posts. Sometimes I think the joke is on me! ]
The Happiness Of Pursuit – One Mile at a Time [We are taking a break from selling credit cards to sell the book of another renowned miles expert/travel hacker, this Chris World Domination dude. I compared the link to my own links in my Top 10 Personal Finance books post some time ago and yep, it certainly looks like an affiliate link. Not sure whose but this is certainly not disclosed in this lame disclosure: “Full disclosure: Chris didn’t pay me to write this post or even ask me to review anything, though he did send me a copy of the book (I bought a Kindle version separately as well). He also clued me in to ordering vegetarian meals on Lufthansa (nearly always Indian and delicious!), so I probably owed him one anyway. ” Wow! ]

To Lap Child, Or Not To Lap Child — That Is The Question – One Mile at a Time [ Reading about lap child material in this blog is like expecting Delta Points not to push credit cards at every opportunity…in other words, this is just odd appearing here! It just goes to show you that our young friend has totally tasted the money and now is in a major pump mode by “extending” his target market to….families lol. Sure saves some time to devote to other more important things like…marketing like the other big boys ]
Will I lose my Arrival Plus points if I cancel my card? – Noob Traveler [ I told you it is not going to take that long to sell this baby again. The answer is “Yes and click my link”. Care to guess how many times the affiliate links was inserted? I was off by one! It was five…I had guessed six before I looked at it. I failed! ]
Travel Challenge: Tokyo – Frugal Travel Guy [ In my own opinion, one of the most embarrassing “expert” features in this space, after of course the mother of all embarrassments: the FTG Credit Card “Tool” which amazingly still appears to be alive selling newbies credit cards 7 to 29 at a time (oh, the horror the horror). Anyway, they likely use a template…yikes! ]

Emerging markets are now 24% of world stock markets capitalization and growing faster than any other segment. I think the strategy of allocation based on world cap makes sense.
.
If you follow Wayne Gretsky philosophy, “I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.” you would actually put more than 24% in emerging markets. Emerging markets are even more attractive because they are currently undervalued. I think 30% would be a good number.
icicle says
Oh, I have to respond!
Wayne Gretzky was not, despite the hype, the greatest hockey player. He had a GREAT team to surround him. Fuhr, Messier, etc. Without them, he was average. re: Kings and Rangers.
Now, want to talk great ones and using their advice for life? Gordie Howe. His career is a better example for life than WG philosophy!
Ok, now that that is out of the way…continue as you were!
icicle says
And yes, I realize that Messier was with WG on the Rangers team. I stand by my statement. Two good players do not make a Great team. Six players on the ice at all times makes a great team.
Just in case anyone wanted to question my hockey knowledge, I’d thought I’d throw in that little disclaimer! LOL
TravelBloggerBuzz says
After this, noone will dare question your hockey knowledge…EVER! 🙂

Thanks for the link regarding the IHG promo. I’m sort of on the fence about that one, and was leaning against it once folks started to be threatened for using the various promo codes (by itself, I didn’t think that “just the free nights” was worth the effort and expense). Now that we know the free nights aren’t going to the “normal kind” — and might be significantly restricted — I’m pretty sure I’m going to pass. I like to know what I’m getting before I buy it.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I am leaning that way too. I just booked an award trip to CLT for a conference and looked into staying an extra Saturday night to at least get one Sat out of the way. Just did not make sense timing wise…so I didn’t. I changed my HKG ticket so I may hit a HI in HKG but…they are damn expensive and hate burning so many Arrival points. Nearest HI is in Flint…which is not so exciting to do a mattress run in…Just got me another 81k IHG points so…no rush. Keeping an eye on it but…, as you mentioned, not terribly drawn to do this. I ilke my streak of not paying for airfare and hotels going long…longer!
iahphx says
Yeah, every time IHG runs one of these promos and I start looking for cheap properties, I realize how expensive their hotels are! Like it’s common for a HI Express to go for about $120/night, even on weekends. I think their hotels are marginally better than, say, Choice Hotels (breakfast is certainly a little better), but they’re often 30 to 50% more expensive. Not sure what the franchise rules are, but if I was going to open a motel, I think I’d do HI — where a cinnamon roll seems to be worth about 40 bucks more.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
The prices of the HIs in HKG are nearing $300…I don’t think so. I have a reservation at the Kimpton conference hotel for the Phoenix #WestCoastDO (will Arrival it) and would not even bother looking around for a HI for the promo….so at this time, as of now, looks like I am not going for it. Subject to change of course.

A few weeks ago a complete newbie asked me about ‘The Travel Hacking Cartel’ which I told him not to waste his money on as long as he didn’t mind some reading and research. Turns out it’s owned by… triphackr. If it genuinely provides info relevant to the individual I don’t mind, but I’m afraid it’s a copy-and-paste paid version of FT. I can’t bring myself to waste a dollar to find out.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I have seen comments about this online several times. I think it is a bad “copy-and-paste paid version of FT”…
TJ says
So is it just another Chris Gulibbloilee repackaging of other peoples/scraped content? I’m still waiting for one of these world domination guys to create a MLM scheme with points and miles info.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I hear Chris is a really nice guy and what he has accomplished is certainly phenomenal. I just roll my eyes when his PR team pushes the “miles expert” marketing line 🙂
smittytabb says
He is really a nice guy. I do admire what he has accomplished. I have a goal of seeing every country and doubt I will get there. If I had started younger and been born male it would be easier. There are a lot of places it is hard to go as a woman if you are traveling alone, so I am realistic that it could be hard. I think that his writing about entrepreneurship is more original than his travel hacking writing. I found his work before a lot of the points and miles bloggers because I used to read a lot more pure travel blogs. Then I got addicted to points and miles. I love this blog because it fuses in some pure love of travel items which I need to stay sane in this crazy hobby.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I don’t really know what he stands for…sounds to me like selling dreams to a bunch of people who are looking for a guru to tell them what they should and could be doing? I have not found anything original…perhaps it is because I have been working off coffee shops and doing my thing for 15 years plus now 🙂
But selling the Travel Hacking service sure takes a giant pair!
And thank you for taking the time to comment and for the kind words as always. This is my escape from the madness 🙂

I am really really, I mean really really, trying not to go off on this because, you know, she is a really nice person….But the BS in this article is so much I am having a really, I mean it, really hard time not succumbing to it…
🙂
Chris says
So how do you reconcile being a nice person and a credit card sellout?
I heard MMS is a nice guy. That doesn’t prevent him from putting his mother in law for sale.
MP is quickly catching up with him in terms of being a marketing machine.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I can’t but apparently they do 🙂
I have noticed that several BA bloggers are quickly catching up on the marketing machine acts like some of the independent big ones. Sad to watch really…The sad part is that they are so full of the coolaid…they are not realizing it.
Kevin says
MMS did not ‘put his mother in law for sale.’ That’s just over the top and wrong. His mother in law was part of his narrative that explained his thinking, that may or may not be current or accurate.
Mommy Points may be a marketing machine. She’s certainly telegenic. And so what? She’s offering links to credit cards that have pretty good signup bonuses and benefit the people who use them. She seems to promote pretty good offers. At least I don’t see her promoting inferior ones. If she did, have you tried emailing her or leaving a comment? She might not have even realized there was a better one.
Her disclosure policies are excellent. It’s always clear when she benefits from a link, so you can decide. And as Buzz says — she is awful nice. She responds to criticism well.
Buzz may not like her blog, nobody has to read what they don’t like except for Buzz since he reviews blogs! But the criticisms seem unfair and frequently misogynistic. Disclosure: I like her blog. I heard her speak at the Chicago Seminars last year and thought she was equally nice in person, really down to earth, and I think she deserves the good things that come to her.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Getting featured on Nightline is a superb marketing coup, no doubt! And congrats to her, it takes work to…make it there.
What gets me is how full of crap the article was! I mean, I don’;t know where to start. You read it and you think she gets all these miles/points for acquiring and spending on credit cards. Not even a peep about churning. Not a word how long this takes to keep it all together and the costs. And not coming out and say that the business she maintains is…really selling credit cards. I bet you the journalists don’t even have a clue. And of course that does not sell very well, does it?
I know the financial planner mentioned in the article and I fully agree with her. These miles “experts” are not that really much of experts (when you compare to others in this space, just look at my Love and Like lists!) in this stuff and are clearly misleading the public telling them all this is free (time and money) and not coming out to say “hey, the business I maintain while I write about how to earn more miles is to sell you the damn credit cards. You would freak out if you found out how much these banks pay me, you may start your own blog too to get some dough, so many have done it, look at the blogs in the MMS Friday interview series lol”. Many people are not that good with plastic and should never be encouraged to get more. Yeah, I know, personal responsibility and all that stuff.
This is what gets me, the whole non transparency and hypocrisy.
MP has not posted here in a long time. I wish her the best. I despise this marketing pump madness and my blog is my OWN outlet to let off some steam 🙂
I am taking the day off….I should rewrite the ABC article and tell the truth 🙂
Scott says
Wait a minute, wouldn’t you be freaking out even more if she talked about churning, MS, and all the other real tricks she uses to accrue all those miles? Dude, it’s mainstream media and a for profit credit card blog they are all full of shit. Just be glad she didn’t share any of the real tricks.
Chris says
Sorry Kevin but you are falling for the bullshit. She only promotes the offers that PAY her.
Have you seen her heavily promoting Amex when she and other BA bloggers lost their links? Does she ever talk about the Chase Hyatt card except is a footnote when she boast about her Hyatt stays and reminds the reader on how to get more Hyatt points through all her Chase portfolio?
I could go on and on…. The whole freaking thing is a huge conflict of interest as George said over and over.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I could go on and on too 🙂
ABC says
Let’s leave the sexist comments out of this. Please point out where the comments have been misogynistic. Don’t let your feelings for someone get in the way of facts.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I just notice the misogynistic characterization. I am shaking my head….but heck, I do that anyway when I look at Feedly lol.
fan of Mommy Points says
George, you sound jealous that she got the exposure and all you can do is expose yourself 😉 Do any publications or legitimate news outlets ask you for your opinion on miles and points?? Not.
It’s just another example of winners laughing and telling jokes, while losers piss and moan.
Stay angry my friend. she did a great job.
John says
Well let’s hope she knows more about the Avios program than Howie 😉
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
My blog is about laughing and telling jokes! At least my jokes are not as bad as Gary’s that take a whole blog post by themselves, jeeesus! Or doing posts about cleaning “cum” WTF!
I wish her the best. She did a great job.
>>>>>>>>she and her family are full-time frequent flyers – Wow!
>>>>>>>>She spends most of her time taking care of her 4-year-old daughter and managing her own company from home. – Amazing! I wonder what kind of company is that, WOW!
>>>>>>>>>She documents her travel tricks and successes on her blog, Mommy Points, which has opened doors to VIP experiences and even earned her extra income because she uses it to advertise travel-related services and deals. – I mean, where do you start, you serious? Extra income for travel related services. WOOOOHOOOOO!
I should do a post: Top 10 preposterous things ABC got wrong?? Would you like that “Joe”?
fan of Mommy Points says
Your blog is about using the facade of telling jokes and laughing while truly it is about slamming others. even your Jonestownlike followers can see that. quit hiding behind that line of BS. You are jealous and angry and too late to the party to cash in.
At least her travel related services are travel related. Cut the crap with amazon and roboform. It’s as bad as a blog post about Starbucks Gold level.
I’m willing to bet the majority of your miles stash came from mileage earning credit cards, a travel related product.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
“Jonestownlike followers” LOL
Yeah, I should cut the crap with amazon and roboform but I so love the dough rolling in I need to pump them like there is no tomorrow like they do the credit cards LOL.
It is about churning credit cards, not putting spend on them. Unless you go to malls and Wal Mart. Too bad you can’t say stuff like this on national TV huh?
Not a fan of Mommy Points BLOG. Deserves to be in the TBB Blogs to Ignore list like the other major credit card bank servants.
Time to start tomorrow’s post….Oh so much material, nice to be a blog reviewer, U go spend on the credit cards so you can travel for FREE too all right dude?
fan of Mommy Points says
Not a dude. Dude !!! Your massive inferiority complex and lack of self esteem shows on a daily basis here. Hell, you won’t even post your name??? And it is common knowledge that those that resort to tearing down others, do it to feel better about themselves.
Does it make you feel better to criticize others George? It sure seems like that is the thrust of your efforts. Deep down inside you do have some redeemng qualities. Why not try to showcase those instead?
icicle says
I’m a fan of MP too. That being said…she’s more of an expert advisor to “professionasl” than one to “amateurs”.
I’m a newbie. That’s how I know. I’m still doing research after 3 months before I even decide to get one card. Yes, I might be missing miles and/or points, but I don’t want to fuck up the rest of my credit life. I am very much a fan of research, research, and more research! I really like MP, but sometimes the complicated MS she does is way too much for me to handle. I’m not stupid- just extra cautious. Personally, I love her posts about actual travel. You know, the posts about the destinations and not the journey to get there? I like MP a lot, but I do not personally feel comfortable following her strategy. That’s just it, though- she is the first person to tell you that this is HER strategy and that you, the reader, must do what you feel comfortable doing (or don’t do what you don’t feel comfy doing!).
As a newbie, I am very entertained by all the blogs. It is entertaining to read on so many different levels the various blogs, consolidated websites, message boards…If anything, I’ve garnerned knowledges on places and things that I will not experience. I have no desire to ever go to the Maldives or Bora Bora- but I love seeing the photos and reading the blogs about them. Expanding one’s intellect is always a good thing- I love seeing the photos of mountains on TBB that I will never climb; seeing photos of a city that I will never get the chance to explore on B.A., reading about experiences on FT and imagining them….It is fun to play “Dora the Explorer” in one’s mind. If given the opportunity to travel, esp. for free, these are not places I’d ever choose so it’s great to “visit” them thru other people’s travels! Kind of like the internet’s version of Rick Steve’s epis on PBS.
What George does is SNARK. I feel as if people do not understand the different between snark and verbal abuse. When George feels like he goes over the line, he does apologize. I’ve read it.
Also, if one has a public blog that is advertised on TV, one has to expect that not all feedback is going to be goo. MP understands this. She’s a mom- her skin is tough. I’m sure she can handle it! 🙂
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I welcome newbie questions here and by email. And I won’t steer you to products I sell 🙂
Just a couple of things from your comment I would like to address. And thanks for taking the time to comment of course!
>>>>>>>>>>sometimes the complicated MS she does…
Excuse me, but if she does any it is NOT complicated at all! In the world of quirky MSers, she does not exist. And righthly so because she makes a HECK of a lot more money selling credit cards than doing MS 🙂
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>but I do not personally feel comfortable following her strategy.
The main strategy is churning credit cards. And she can’t even say that! Unless you consider spend spend spend on 20 different things and “stacking” a strategy. And mileage runs too!
I certainly prefer her travel related posts than trip reports by MMS or DP 🙂
TBB is ALL about SNARK. TBB reviews blogs and picks the best and the worst. And packages the worst in an…entertaining manner. They are businesses. TBB is like the Yelp and SNL of miles/points blogs (just made that up…I like it!). I have nothing personal against anyone (except two). Don’t take anything personally and ignore me. Or you can improve (if you can) and try to climb out of the Ignore Blog list….yeah right, like that would happen. Until then they keep pumping credit cards every day which bothers the hell out of me as this hobby was NOT like that. Now we have hundreds of blogs selling bank products and going on national TV and not calling it like it is…”My blog is about selling credit cards” and all this is NOT free…
I need to go eat a sandwich now 🙂
Jules Vern says
The snark can get way overdone, and when it does it’s just sad. Fine line. TBB can be entertaining, but crosses that line a bit too much lately. Still reading, though!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Hey Jules! Sometimes I like to toe the line you know. It happens when the BS gets too much…like since Friday my eyes have been gouged! So…to deal with this I listen to my therapist, sit down in my computer and just “let go”. It’s very therapeutic to me!
At the end I want us all to have some fun reading TBB, smile (at the expense of others and ME!), learn something, get rarely inspired a few times. With so many blogs out there….I wanted to do something different.
Thanks for reading. And don’t forget the last day to sign for Chase Freedom quarter 5% bonus….click my links 🙂
icicle says
After a long day in the pharmacy….it’s complicated to me. 😛 Maybe I need to invest in some charts and graphs. I like to do the math first (like Leonard’s mom. LOL).
Earning points/miles needs to be simple for me. My brain is mush by the time I get home. 🙂
TravelBloggerBuzz says
I have a few pharmacist clients. I am very afraid I know exactly what you mean 🙂

>>>>>>>Hell, you won’t even post your name???

>>>>>>>it is common knowledge that those that resort to tearing down others, do it to feel better about themselves.
It is common knowledge that TBB is about satire. In fact, it is such a huge failure commercially and you don’t like it…so why are YOU here? You don’t have to read it you know, take some personal responsibility 😉
Wait for tomorrow’s post. The BS in the blogosphere got to me and the Blog Buzz section had a…relapse!
Lions lost and sucked so this made me even more angry hehe
icicle says
“misogynistic”??
Someone say George is misogynistic? Um, no.
Gleff is misogynistic. George just likes to snark.
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Snark is my middle name 🙂
Jules Vern says
Actually I think it was some of the commenters that were called mysogynistic. And that seems fair, with all the pimping and whoring accusations that have been thrown at the few female bloggers in this space.
George’s heart seems like it is in the right place, though. Takes it too far sometimes? Sure. Gives some bloggers more of a pass than others, then beats up on a handful too much? Absolutely.
He’s raised awareness of practices within this hobby of ours, and I give him a whole lot of slack because of it. I just hope he gives himself the break he keeps promising, because he deserves it and it will make the blog better over time too!
TravelBloggerBuzz says
Sometimes I feel like I am in a brothel with so much selling going on 🙂

Yes I give some more of a pass and beat up on others, guilty as charged.
I try to be fair all the time.
Raised awareness, yes yes yes. I care deeply about this hobby. I want to raise to lift everyone and take us to the promised land. That sometimes requires calling it like it is. They are all free to try to get into the Love/Like lists #hint

I for one am glad ABC and MP kept the segment simple. My heart froze when they said “Let’s go to the gift card rack…” But fortunately MP didn’t talk about what I thought she was going to.

Yeah, I was shocked they filmed by the gift rack too! But I knew from the get go it won’t “go” there…Network TV is just not suitable for the true “MS” message, no way! I am not sure she even does any actually 🙂
